Aonung.

This 8 foot 5 inch tall 15 year old is the son of the Mekaina clan leaders, Renal and Tonawari.

He's also the brother to Sirea, and he's a massive disappointment.

We knew from like day one that Aonung was going to be trouble.

When the Sallis first arrived at the Mekaina village, he made his way onto the scene.

And the Waka and Etaim were very polite, as they did the gesture for Oinati Kame.

I'm aware of how much of a dork I am, But this is like the most respectful gesture that you can make to a fellow not-be.

And Ao Noong just decided to completely ignore it.

And then proceeds to make fun of their tails for being too small and not paddle-like.

It's supposed to be a tail?

Renal gave Tonawari her approval to let the Sully stay with them.

So Tonawari assigned Ao Noong and his sister Sirea to teach the Sully children their ways

and instruct them on how to adapt to the reef.

My son Ao Noong, our daughter Sirea, will show your children what to do.

Sirea was like, let's do this thing.

Come.

I will show you our village.

But Aonung decided to be an unwelcoming scound.

Father, what?

I just decided.

And for those who don't know, in the Navi language, scound is not a compliment.

Sire went on to be sympathetic when it came to the Sullys needing time to adapt.

But Aonung continued to be a disappointment, and he continued to be judgmental.

He didn't even remember who Kiri was. Who?

Who is Kiri?

Kiri? Who?

One of the four kids he was assigned to watch over.

At the beginning, Aonung barely helped the Sulli children and in fact, other than trying to teach the Sully's how to ride an ELU, if you want to live here, you have to ride.

I didn't see one moment of him genuinely helping them out.

Instead, he put all of his energy into doing stuff like bringing Luwak to three brothers

so that he could ditch him there and then have Luwak get eaten by an akula.

Which is the opposite of what his father wanted him to do.

I was really disappointed when Ao Nung decided to be a jerk

and leave Luwak in the middle of the ocean because when they finish traveling over to three brothers, Lawak refers to Ao Noong as Cuz.

That was insane, Cuz!

Which is what Lawak also calls Spider, aka Lawak's best friend.

You okay?

Yeah, great, Cuz.

Never better.

Implying that Lawak was turning over a new shell and becoming friends with Ao Noong.

But then, well, you know.

Ao Noong rocks this reef bird talon wrapped in fish scale leather.

The same one that hits him in the face after Lawak punches him.

Really putting the Ao in Aonung, the Reefbird Talon, is a huge contrast to the necklace that his father's wearing,

as Tonawari is rocking this necklace with the tooth of an akula, a much deadlier predator.

The contrast is there to further represent how Aonung is young and naive, and has a long way to go in terms of growing up and taking on responsibility.

Aonung's lack of maturity and unwillingness to do simple things like helping out the Sullis, explains why Sirea is on her way to become the next Sahik,

while Aonung is on his way to become a further disappointment.

But seriously, Aonung is not on his way to replace his father as the next Oluwikdan.

Maybe it's because Tonawari has very high standards for the next clan leader, and if that's the case, that must be really rough on Aonung.

It would definitely explain why he has to put down every other Na'vi around him like the Sully's, feeling like he has some sense of power and control by making everyone else miserable.

But he definitely doesn't know how to be a tough guy, as he's only willing to be mean when his sister is not paying attention, or when warriors like Neteum have their backs turned to him.

Look, I know I often refer to Ao Nung as a professional disappointment, which he is, but he's really good at other stuff.

Like, he's actually a remarkable hunter who's quite proficient at using the spear gun or his blade made from a skimwing's jawbone.

And like Tonawari, or Inal, or any other sensible Na'vi, Ao Nung respects the golden rule of all known Na'vi clans,

which is to only take what you need from the environment and to not waste anything.

Being such a good hunter, Ao Nung has earned the respect of his peers, explaining why he's the leader of this frightening group of youths that you see throughout the Way of Water.

I don't know, maybe if Aonung stops being such a menace, he'll be able to prove that he's capable of so much more.

And to be fair, I think he's on track of becoming a better Na'vi, but don't get me wrong, I mean, he has a ways to go.

Like his sister, Aonung has not gone through Ikni Maya, and is not considered a warrior, so he has absolutely no tattoos on him.

He's currently at the stage where he works with his Ilu to deter any predators from

and going near defenseless Ilu ponies or younger members of the Mechaina.

And when he's not doing that, he's actually spending most of his time going plunge diving in these underwater tunnels below the seawall, doing this during the changing of the tides.

Aonung Songkord is riddled with these trinkets like teeth from his ilu when it was a pony.

And these black bead looking things over here are apparently from underneath Tonawari's canoe.

To me, these trinkets are indicative of how much Aonung looks up to his father

and how much he wants to be like his father, especially with the teeth from the ilu pony.

Tonawari incorporated the teeth of aculas into his wardrobe.

And what's happening here is that Aonung is trying to emulate that look in the best way he possibly can.

It's safe to say that Aonung and Tonawari have a similar dynamic as Lawak and Jake.

So after the three brothers incident when Lawak took the blame for everything, Aonung got in less trouble, and Lawak and Aonung were pretty okay after that point.

I think it was at that moment

that they both understood they were disappointments left in the shadows of their more capable siblings.

So they found this mutual understanding, and Aonung suddenly got better.

He grew to the point where he was willing to help Aonetea

and pursue Lawak when Lawak was putting himself in danger by trying to warn Payakan about the Sky People.

Aonung did help save Payakan, so...

I don't know, I guess he's okay in my books.

Plus, after watching Kiri connect her Q into a daisy anemone

to control other massive aquatic plants in order to slam a setup sub into a rock wall, and then have the daisy anemone eat the two operators,

Aonung is confirmed to never mess with Kiri again.
