ASEAN is taking a major step towards deeper digital economic integration.

ASEAN is moving towards a common framework for cooperation on artificial

intelligence as it prepares to sign the landmark Digital Economic Framework Agreement, or DEFA.

The agreement between the member countries is designed to deepen digital economic integration across Southeast Asia

while establishing common roots in areas ranging from e -commerce and and digital payments to data protection and emerging technologies.

Speaking ahead of the ASEAN Economic Minister's meeting in Manila, Philippine Trade Under Secretary Alanghetti said,

cooperation on artificial intelligence will form part of the agreement.

But the framework will go beyond regulating technology.

ASEAN countries will also need to help workers and businesses develop the skills needed to adapt to an increasingly AI -driven economy.

For businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises, this can help create a more predictable and trusted environment for selling,

transacting and expanding across ASEAN.

DEFA is ASEAN's first region -wide digital economy agreement.

It will establish common regional rules covering cross -border e -commerce, paperless trade, electronic payments, consumer protection,

data protection and privacy, as well as cooperation on AI and other emerging technologies.

For businesses, particularly micro, small and medium -sized enterprises,

ASEAN says the agreement could make it easier and more predictable to operate across the region.

When it comes to cooperation under the Digital Economy Framework Agreement, usually that is covered under the Economic and Technical Cooperation.

And of course, there are many elements that you have to consider as far as upskilling,

reskilling and also empowering our people to embrace or adapt artificial intelligence and also advanced technology in the process.

ASEAN estimates its digital economy could approach US $1 trillion by 2030 under current growth trends.

With the successful implementation of DEFA, its potential value could reach as much as US $2 trillion.

Negotiations on DEFA have now concluded,

with the agreement undergoing final legal preparations ahead of its expected signing at the ASEAN Summit in Manila in November.
