1
Let's further our mission to find out how plants took over the planet.
2
In the previous video, we discovered that bryophytes solved life on land by staying small and near water.
3
But what would a plant need if it wanted to grow taller and leave the wet ground behind.
4
The next breakthrough was vascular tissue, xylem and phloem.
5
Xylem carries water and dissolved minerals upward from the roots.
6
Phloem distributes sugars made by photosynthesis to the rest of the plant.
7
Xylem also provides support, allowing stems to stand upright and grow tall.
8
Ferns, horsetails, and lycophytes are classified as seedless vascular plants.
9
They have this internal plumbing for transport and support, so they can grow far larger than bryophytes.
10
Ferns have true roots, stems and leaves called fronds.
11
On the underside of many fronds are clusters called sori, containing tiny spore-producing sporangia.
12
But ferns still depend on moisture to reproduce.
13
Their spores need suitable moist conditions to germinate, growing into tiny gametophytes, sometimes only millimeters wide.
14
These delicate plants generally need humid or moist surroundings to avoid drying out.
15
The gametophytes produce eggs and sperm.
16
And for fertilization to happen, the sperm must swim through a film of water to reach an egg.
17
Vascular tissue helped plants rise above the ground and expanded the places they can survive.
18
But it didn't completely free their distribution beyond moist or humid environments.
19
To conquer drier habitats, plants needed something spores could never provide—seeds.
