1
you may have read or heard about my guests in the past few weeks.
2
I've never heard of a movie opening getting this much publicity.
3
People just going nuts.
4
This new movie, Nine Months, which opens on...
5
I saw it, actually.
6
Very funny.
7
And people, all these press, everybody's here to find out about this movie.
8
It opens July 12th.
9
Please welcome, ladies and gentlemen, Hugh Grant.
10
Thank you, Hugh.
11
I mean, there you go.
12
Let me start with question number one.
13
What the hell were you thinking?
14
No, I don't say that to be clear, but I think among most people going, what?
15
Yeah, yeah.
16
Well, it's not easy um you know i the thing is
17
um i i people give me tons of um ideas on this one i keep reading new
18
you know psychological theories and stuff like that um you know i was under pressure i was
19
overtired or i was lonely or i fell down the stairs when i was a child or whatever
20
but i um you know i i think it would that would be bollocks, really, to hide behind something like that.
21
You know, I think you know in life pretty much what's a good thing to do and what's a bad thing.
22
And I did a bad thing, and there you have it.
23
Well, yeah, I mean, that's...
24
What has...
25
What has been the reaction from the public, generally?
26
I mean...
27
Well, the public has been really fantastic you know fantastic to
28
the people who matter who in this case really you know my girlfriend
29
and my family and stuff like that but also
30
which is really touching to me you know they've been incredibly
31
nice I've had tons of letters from you know everyone from
32
famous film stars I've never even met to you know incredibly
33
kind of interesting letters from people who you know who've really
34
suffered themselves people who've got epilepsy people who are paralyzed
35
and who really and
36
that kind of sympathy um really brings it home to you
37
then you then you really realize you know my problems aren't
38
so bad yeah so I'm incredibly grateful to look to that for
39
that now how about how about the Hollywood reaction as you know the Hollywood community was shocked to learn
40
that this type of thing was going on right like it's not like
41
that scene in Casablanca gambling round up the usual suspect I mean what do you find that You know, this is an odd town,
42
this way, in that people seem to react both with glee.
43
When someone as successful as yourself, something bad happens.
44
People love to be the first to jump in there and whatever and do jokes, as I am guilty.
45
I might have slipped a few in there, too.
46
No, you've been very nice, actually.
47
Thank you very much.
48
We tried.
49
But you know what I'm saying, though.
50
But people, do you find the Hollywood reaction different from?
51
From what, the British reaction?
52
No. The British general public?
53
No, I mean, you know, there's obviously, um, I didn't really ever think it would be quite the kind of circus it's become, but, you know, I can see there's juice in it,
54
and I'm sure if I'd been a, you know, hadn't been the person that, you know, perpetrated this whole thing, then I suppose I would be, you know, enjoying it as much as anyone else,
55
but it's pretty miserable on the other side of the equation.
56
And, you know, it's not just for me.
57
In a curious kind of way, I think I need to suffer for this.
58
You know, it's the right thing.
59
But it's bad when, you know, they're jostling your father.
60
See, that's the killer to me, because my dad never got mad.
61
They always got disappointed, which was the killer.
62
Because, you know, girlfriends, you can sort of work that out.
63
Parents, they bring you up, and then all of a sudden something.
64
Because I imagine, being British, I imagine there's a certain...
65
I don't imagine there was talk at the dinner table about sort of the way Americans do about sex and education.
66
Or maybe not.
67
No, no, you're right.
68
No, no, no. That was never really the main topic of conversation. But having said that,
69
that was, you know.. so touching
70
that people like my father you know just i called him
71
and not even that you know that's a bad phone call to have to make and um
72
but you know he's just amazing he just said um you
73
know look here old boy i was in the army i i know the sort of thing you know
74
and um cool really cool yeah well i mean it's nice
75
that they sort of you you think they're going to react in one way
76
and of course they go yeah they're amazing they're amazing yeah
77
then of course the press has just been harping on you
78
and elizabeth your girlfriend elizabeth right how is she i mean
79
because again she's in another horrible situation here in terms of the press
80
and all yeah i mean that's the thing you know i
81
i'm completely understand everyone having having a good joke about it
82
and you know
83
if i was a single guy then i would be it would be hysterical i'm sure by now
84
but it's not it's really it's not funny it's
85
when you've got it when you've got someone like that because you know i As I say, I've done an abominable thing, and she's been amazing about it,
86
and contrary to what I read in the paper today, she's, you know, being very supportive, and we're going to try and work it out,
87
and, you know, time is of the essence, so I can't sit here now and say...
88
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
89
And the English press are far, far worse, aren't they, than the American press for us in this regard.
90
Or maybe not.
91
Well, no, I mean, they've never been famous for their restraint.
92
Yeah, yeah.
93
Yes, that's been interesting.
94
I mean, it's hard to keep your temper.
95
I've managed to do it up to a point, but my father taught me a kind of interesting lesson in that.
96
He doesn't bother, he just says ill -mannered buggers to them.
97
And that about sums it up, really, yeah.
98
How do you feel this will affect your career
99
or even this this picture will it do you think i
100
mean well i mean obviously one of the you know
101
so many bad things about it i don't know where to begin
102
but one of them was uh was the you know embarrassment
103
i caused the people i've been working with for last year on this on this film And when you embarrass Tom Arnold, that's really tough.
104
I'm sorry, I can't help.
105
But still, I mean, you must think that, oh.
106
Yeah, but it's there on my list of horrors,
107
but it's not top of the list in my career because much higher than that is the stuff I've done to people.
108
You know, I really care about my family and my girlfriend and stuff.
109
Well, I must say, you know, I admire your honoring the commitment.
110
Because everybody is so, you know, a lot of times when things happen, suddenly people run off and they hide behind the press people and whatnot.
111
And you were booked here long before.
112
Well, the fact is, I owe it to the studio.
113
And the other thing is that, although I've never been one to, you know, blow my own trumpet, as they say, I think this is...
114
this is a funny film
115
and it has to be you know I want people to know about it I would like people to go
116
and see it we'll talk a little bit more about that we'll come back we'll talk with you right after this
117
And I want to mention, hey, you say, I'm a true master's name.
118
Well, we're back.
119
We're coming from your honor and very beautiful Jill Hennessy.
120
And, of course, your fabulous Doobie Brothers talking with Hugh Grant.
121
As I said, I saw this movie nine months.
122
It really made me laugh out loud.
123
A real very, very funny movie.
124
Is it the same director who did Mrs. Doubtfire?
125
Mrs. Doubtfire and the Home Alone films and all that kind of stuff.
126
Oh, boy yeah which is frightening because i mean with a track record like
127
that um you know
128
if i was the cause of his first failure it would have been a doubly bad week
129
but as it is um they just had these sneak previews i i'm new to all this uh
130
but these things called sneak previews
131
and the today the studio were uncorking the champagne oh that's good yeah apparently people are going nuts for it
132
so that that is good chris chris columbus is his name right yeah yeah well they don't do
133
that in England do they
134
because I know prior to this you've done the Merchant Ivy films
135
and you can do the whole Merchant Ivy film for like
136
the cost of like a Bruce Willis trailer essentially really uh
137
yeah that's right I mean we you know that's what's
138
so odd for me about making a film like this one is
139
that in England I've been accustomed to you know that
140
if you if you make a film at all that's really it you're you're clever to have done
141
that you get a slap on the back and
142
if anyone goes to see it that's just an additional bonus but no one particularly cares about that.
143
And so this was very frightening, yeah, because it matters this sort of big budget uh big budget very frightening
144
and um i mean nice big trailer and all
145
that kind of stuff and mobile telephone and uh you know nice food and all that but
146
i think all that's really down to uh how much you take advantage of it
147
and i didn't i don't think i really took enough advantage
148
of it oh well tom arnold did tom arnold really yeah yeah hard to believe yeah isn't
149
that bizarre you know please all american men are not like i love tom arnold
150
but please don't judge us all by Tom.
151
And you know, he's very, very good.
152
He is very, very funny in this film.
153
The two of you, it is the most, not that you're sort of a comedy team, but in these scenes where you are, it is really amazing.
154
I would never have thought, boy, you work together as if you've been doing this for years and years.
155
Yes, it's strange, it's strange.
156
Because he has an interesting, you know, all actors, I think, have a sort of thing they fall back on.
157
I blink my eyes a bit too much and other people do make funny noises in their throat and stuff.
158
his kind of tick as an actor is to hit the nearest english person
159
and this is this is this is what he does
160
and you probably see 80 80 of the scenes he'd say
161
hey why don't why why don't i hit you in this scene
162
and uh chris would say yeah great
163
and then he'd he'd hit me yeah also and then
164
when he got bored of that he started to kiss me
165
which was worse and so i we went back to the hitting oh yeah
166
as you say make it a triple bad week right yeah yeah yeah yeah now the uh robin now working with Robin.
167
Did you know Robin Williams prior to this?
168
Well, obviously, I knew who he was.
169
Right, but you hadn't.
170
No, I'd never met him.
171
I'd never met him.
172
No, that was...
173
And he's a very nice chap.
174
Very, very hairy.
175
That was the first thing that surprised me.
176
He is hairy.
177
He is hairy.
178
I just...
179
I mean, really, amazing.
180
There were days I thought we were doing Congo, and it was...
181
He was...
182
Tremendously nice.
183
I mean, but, you know, he couldn't be more supportive.
184
You have to meet Ed Asner.
185
I think you'd get along.
186
Oh, really?
187
A very hairy actor.
188
Yeah, right.
189
But it's odd.
190
I never heard an actor described as hairy.
191
Well, it was just the first thing I noticed.
192
They said, here's Robin Williams.
193
And, you know, I took a step back.
194
I go, wow.
195
But having said that, as I say, very supportive and very funny.
196
Too funny for me.
197
I like, you know, that was the thing.
198
I thought, I'm doing fine in this film.
199
And then he comes on to do his few weeks.
200
And, you know, by the end of the first day, you want to slit your wrists.
201
Because he's sort of legendary for i know having him as a guest it's almost impossible to any following
202
because he improvs and he bounces off the walls
203
and i wondered in the movie you you can't really say
204
to robin here's the script here are the lines do this
205
and then the other actors follow that whereas i could see
206
you know i've known him for a long time working the clubs i can see where he's free -forming
207
and i could watch you in the film trying to follow
208
we're just trying to get you know my line in occasionally
209
but that's all right you know I mean the bottom line is he's bloody funny
210
and it works
211
and that's that's it you know damn him you you play
212
what you play a child psychologist yeah yeah I'm a child
213
psychologist who's terrified of children that's really the what happens and
214
and I have a perfect life you know I've got lovely this is where everyone snickers again
215
because I have a perfect career perfect girlfriend and everything's going fine
216
and then this bombshell comes out of the blue because she suddenly gets pregnant by mistake and I can't handle it.
217
That's really what it's about.
218
Now we have a clip.
219
What scene is this?
220
Do we know?
221
This is just towards the end when her waters break and we have to go to the hospital.
222
Oh yeah, in the restaurant.
223
Okay, let's take a look.
224
Scene from nine months.
225
That's a nice still.
226
What?
227
My water broke.
228
We'll get you another.
229
No, my water This water broke!
230
This water broke?
231
Yeah.
232
Samuel, stop!
233
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
234
You stupid rat!
235
George, are you all right?
236
I'm having chest pains.
237
I'll call an ambulance.
238
Well, look, I'm on the way to the hospital,
239
if you'd like a ride. Where is Dr. Green?
240
Get off the phone and try!
241
Blimey scum!
242
You, leave me alone!
243
Leave me alone, you mad witch!
244
Get off!
245
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
246
Are you all right?
247
My leg is broken.
248
Help me.
249
Yes.
250
Help me.
251
Help.
252
Just stay there.
253
Just stay there.
254
what really made me laugh is usually
255
when you watch chase scenes in movies they managed you know they hit the apple cart
256
and they managed to avoid hitting people i just like the
257
just keep hitting people with the car yeah yeah loading loading
258
it was fun i've always wanted to run people over got
259
the chance well it's terrific listen the movie opens wednesday nine
260
months terrific terrific him hugh thank you for coming terrific sport and good luck to you
261
