Some people, I think artists, need to ask tough questions almost publicly to be able to have those conversations with themselves, you know?

My whole lot, you know, so much of my life has been in public that it's kind of the only way I know.

You know, I was 18 when Dead Poets Society came out.

I've made a fool out of myself, left to right and center.

You know, I've gotten divorced in public, I got famous in public, I've gotten good reviews and bad reviews.

And so like, in a way, maybe I don't know how to have the conversation out in public, you know, maybe.

Well, to me, I saw it as I'm going to take back the narrative myself and show who I am.

Because I feel like there would be this sort of feeling

if you've been famous for that long and grew up in public, that anytime you walk into a room with new people, they all have an assumption about you.

And it's probably wrong.

and it would be hard to not feel like you disappear a little bit into that image that you assume they have.

You're spot on.

I mean, that's the thing that nobody tells you is you, when you, you know, shortly after Reality Bites came out,

it's like I never made a first impression ever again.

It's a weird thing to give up because it's the idea that you can start again tomorrow.

It's valuable to all of us, you know?

I can be better tomorrow.

Yeah, but you're sort of locked in the box of reception, right?

But you're kind of locked into this thing.

And I've always resisted it.

There's a thing I've always believed.

You know when somebody, when they really want to make you crazy in prison, in a prison war camp or anywhere, they put you in isolation, right?

The thing I realized, the second you become famous, you're kind of in a weird isolation.

People want to know why famous people marry other famous people so often or something like that, you know?

It's because they're in ISO with them.

I just did this beautiful talk.

It was kind of heartbreaking to me in a strange way.

I did this talk at this university about some students, and I was trying to talk to them, and trying to be, to the best of my ability, or whatever, I was trying to be real with these kids.

They're 20, 25, or whatever.

But nobody really wants me to be real.

They just want a photo.

You know?

And it's kind of heartbreaking, because you go, I'm actually here, and if you really do like me, let's talk.

You seem really interesting.

You're a whole bunch of film students.

I actually was looking forward to come here, because I'm really curious what you guys are thinking about right now, like what's happening?

But that dialogue was never gonna happen because I was behind a glass wall, you know?

And I think The Hot Estate, Seymour, the documentary, they're both, it's me like tapping on the back of the glass,

hoping it'll break a little bit.

Right.

You know?

We're just the same, all of us.
