1
Hi everyone!
2
Welcome back to The Learning Lab, where English is easy and enjoyable.
3
I'm James, and as always, I'm sitting here next to my wonderful co-host Jenny, and we are so happy you're here with us today.
4
Seriously, every single one of you joining us right now makes this whole thing worth it.
5
And I'm Jenny.
6
If this is your first time here, welcome to the family.
7
We are genuinely so glad you found us.
8
And if you've been with us since day one, wow, you are already four days in.
9
And honestly, that is something to be really proud of.
10
Four days of consistent practice?
11
That's not nothing.
12
That's actually huge.
13
That is huge.
14
You know, James always says, wait, I'm James.
15
Okay, I always say that showing up is already half the work, and here you are showing up again.
16
So before we jump into today's episode, we just want to remind you, if you haven't subscribed yet, please hit that subscribe button right now.
17
It helps us so much, and it means you'll never miss a single day of this 30-day challenge.
18
Go ahead, we'll wait.
19
We're serious.
20
We're literally just sitting here waiting.
21
Okay, subscribe?
22
Good.
23
Now let's get into it.
24
Today is day four of our 30-day English shadowing challenge.
25
And today's topic is one of my personal favorites, because we literally talk about this every single day in real life.
26
Today we're talking about people you know.
27
Your friends, your family members, your co-workers, your neighbors, that one person in your office who microwaves fish every single day.
28
James.
29
I'm just saying, Jenny, we all know someone like that.
30
We all do.
31
Okay.
32
Yes, fair point.
33
But this topic is genuinely so useful because talking about the people in your life is something you do constantly in English.
34
When you meet someone new, what do they ask you?
35
Do you have brothers or sisters?
36
What are your friends like?
37
Tell me about your family.
38
These questions come up all the time.
39
And if you freeze up or don't know what to say, today's episode is going to help you so much.
40
Exactly.
41
And the beautiful thing about shadowing, for anyone who's new and doesn't know what shadowing is,
42
is that you listen to someone speak and then you repeat exactly what they say, copying the rhythm, the emotion, the pauses, all of it.
43
It trains your mouth and your brain at the same time.
44
It's like going to the gym, but for your English.
45
You're building muscle memory, basically.
46
I love that analogy, actually.
47
And research really does support this.
48
Shadowing helps with pronunciation, fluency, and even confidence, because you're not trying to create language from scratch.
49
You're borrowing the patterns that already work and slowly making them your own.
50
So you don't have to be perfect.
51
You just have to try.
52
You just have to try.
53
That's our motto today.
54
Okay, so here's how today's episode's going to work.
55
Jenny and I are going to have a totally natural conversation about people we know, our friends, family, people from our lives.
56
we're going to use simple everyday language so it's easy to follow.
57
Then we'll pull out key phrases and practice them together.
58
Sound good?
59
Sounds perfect.
60
And James, I actually want to start with you
61
because I realized the other day that in three years of doing this show, I have heard you mention a friend named Big Mike approximately 47 times.
62
Oh wow, okay, we're starting with Big Mike.
63
And I still have no idea who Big Mike is.
64
Can you please describe him to me like I'm meeting him for the first time?
65
Okay, okay.
66
So Big Mike, his real name is Michael, obviously, but everyone calls him Big Mike.
67
And here's the thing, Jenny, he's not actually that big.
68
Like, he's a normal-sized person.
69
I think the name just stuck from when we were kids, and there was another Michael in our friend group.
70
So this one became Big Mike, and the other one became just Mike.
71
Anyway, Big Mike is one of my oldest friends.
72
We've known each other since we were maybe seven or eight years old.
73
So that's, wow, that's over 20 years now.
74
That's a long time.
75
What is he like as a person?
76
Like, how would you describe his personality?
77
Oh, he is, he's the kind of person who walks into a room and immediately everyone knows he's there.
78
Not in a loud or annoying way, but in a warm way, you know?
79
He's very outgoing, very friendly.
80
He talks to everybody.
81
If you go to a party with Big Mike, you will make three new friends because he's going to introduce you to everyone whether you want to or not.
82
Okay, so he's very sociable.
83
Is he similar to you or is he quite different?
84
Honestly, I think we balance each other out really well.
85
Like, I'm pretty outgoing too, but I also need time by myself to recharge.
86
Big Mike, I don't think that guy has ever needed a quiet afternoon alone in his entire life.
87
He gets his energy from people.
88
The more people around, the happier he is.
89
I think the technical word for that is extrovert, like a really strong extrovert.
90
Right, and that's actually a great word to know, extrovert, someone who feels energized by being around other people.
91
And the opposite is introvert, someone who needs quiet time alone to recharge.
92
And most people are somewhere in the middle.
93
Exactly.
94
And I want everyone listening to think about the people in their lives right now.
95
Are they more extroverted?
96
Are they more introverted?
97
That's a great way to start describing someone's personality in English.
98
Okay, so now it's my turn.
99
I'll describe someone I know, and James, you can ask me questions like we're just having a conversation.
100
Yes, okay, go.
101
I'm ready.
102
I'm very curious.
103
So I want to talk about my aunt.
104
Her name is Linda, and she is… I mean, how do I put this?
105
She is one of the most interesting people I have ever met in my life.
106
And I say that with full love, because she is genuinely wonderful.
107
But she's also the kind of person who will call you
108
at 10 o'clock at night to tell you about a documentary she just watched about penguins.
109
Oh, I love Linda already.
110
Tell me more.
111
So Aunt Linda is in her early 60s now, and she has just… she's lived this really full life.
112
She used to be a schoolteacher for about 30 years.
113
And you can tell because she's very patient and very good at explaining things.
114
Like, she never makes you feel stupid for not knowing something, she'll just calmly explain it and then ask if you have questions.
115
Oh, that's such a special quality in a person.
116
I feel like not everyone has that.
117
Some people explain things and they make you feel a little dumb.
118
And then there are people like your aunt who just make you feel like, oh, this is easy.
119
I understand this now.
120
Exactly.
121
And she's also very curious about everything.
122
Like, she's always reading something.
123
Books, articles, random Wikipedia pages at midnight.
124
She's always learning.
125
I think that's That's something I really admire about her.
126
Ooh, admire.
127
That's a great word.
128
To admire someone means you look up to them.
129
You respect them.
130
You think they have something wonderful about them.
131
Can everyone repeat that with me?
132
I really admire her.
133
One more time.
134
I really admire her.
135
Beautiful.
136
And one more thing about Aunt Linda.
137
She's very funny, but it's a quiet kind of funny.
138
She doesn't try to be funny.
139
She just says exactly what she's thinking.
140
And a lot of the time, what she's thinking is absolutely hilarious.
141
Dry humor!
142
That's what that's called.
143
And actually, Jenny, you have a little bit of that too.
144
I have no idea what you're talking about.
145
See?
146
Right there.
147
That was it.
148
Okay, so we've talked about Big Mike and Aunt Linda.
149
Let's now slow down and actually pull out some of the most useful phrases we used
150
so everyone can shadow them in practice.
151
Yes, let's do that.
152
And everyone listening, this is the core of the shadowing practice.
153
When we say a phrase, we want you to pause the video, repeat it out louded, and really try to copy the way we said it.
154
The emotion, the speed, everything.
155
Okay, phrase number one.
156
Are you ready, Jenny?
157
Ready.
158
He's the kind of person who… This is such a useful structure for describing someone.
159
You just fill in the blank.
160
For example, he's the kind of person who always makes you feel welcome.
161
Or she's the kind of person who never forgets a birthday.
162
Let's say it together.
163
He's the kind of person who… Go ahead everyone, your turn.
164
I love that phrase because it's very natural
165
and it gives a lot of information about someone's character in just a few words.
166
Another really useful one we used is, we've known each other since… and then you say when.
167
For example, we've known each other since we were kids.
168
Or we've known each other since university.
169
Everyone try that one.
170
We've known each other since.
171
Okay.
172
Phrase number three, and this one is great for showing respect for someone.
173
One thing I really admire about her is… You can also say, one thing I love about him is… or,
174
one thing I appreciate about them is… These all work the same way.
175
Go ahead and try, one thing I really admire about her is… Good, and then one more phrase.
176
We balance each other out out.
177
This is a beautiful expression that means two people are different in a way that actually helps each other.
178
Like one person is very organized and the other is more relaxed.
179
And together they work really well.
180
We balance each other out.
181
Say it.
182
Okay, I want to try something now, Jenny.
183
I want us to have a little mini conversation, just a short one, so people can shadow the whole thing.
184
Not just one phrase at a time, but a real back and forth.
185
Are you ready?
186
Sure, let's do it.
187
Keep it simple, though.
188
Short sentences, clear language.
189
Perfect.
190
I'll start.
191
Okay.
192
Hey, Jenny.
193
Tell me about your best friend.
194
Oh, her name is Sarah.
195
We met in college, so we've known each other for a really long time now.
196
What is she like?
197
She's very kind and very funny.
198
She always knows how to make me laugh, even when I'm having a bad day.
199
That sounds like a great friend.
200
Is she similar to you?
201
Not really, actually.
202
She's much more outgoing than I am.
203
She loves meeting new people.
204
I'm a little more quiet, but I think we balance each other out really well.
205
That's really nice.
206
I can see why you're such good friends.
207
Yeah, I'm really lucky to have her.
208
Beautiful.
209
Okay, everyone, now let's do that whole thing again, and this time you shadow along.
210
We'll go a little slower.
211
Listen first, and then when we pause, you repeat each line.
212
Ready?
213
Here we go.

That sounds like a great friend.
457
Is she similar to you?
458
Not really, actually.
459
She's much more outgoing than I am.
460
She loves meeting new people.
461
I'm a little more quiet, but I think we balance each other out really well.
462
That's really nice.
463
I can see why you're such good friends.
464
Yeah, I'm really lucky to have her.
465
Amazing.
466
How did that feel?
467
I hope it felt good.
468
Don't worry if it didn't feel perfect.
469
That's totally fine.
470
The more you do this, the easier it gets, I promise.
471
And you know what's actually kind of funny, Jenny?
472
I was thinking about this the other day.
473
describing people is actually one of the hardest things to do in your native language too, right?
474
Like if I say, describe your mom in five words, even in English, I have to really think about it.
475
Oh, that's such a good point.
476
I've actually read about this.
477
There's research that shows we often struggle to describe the people closest to us
478
because we know them so well and they're so complex.
479
With a stranger, it's almost easier because you just say what you see.
480
But with someone you love, you want to get it right, you know?
481
you want to say something that really captures who they are.
482
Yes, that's exactly it.
483
Like, how do you sum up a whole human being in a few sentences?
484
It's honestly kind of beautiful that it's hard.
485
It means people are complicated and interesting and worth knowing deeply.
486
Okay, James, I want to give our listeners one more exercise before we wrap up today.
487
And this is a homework exercise, something to do after the episode.
488
Ooh, homework.
489
I love homework.
490
I mean, okay, I don't always love homework, but I love this homework.
491
The exercise is this.
492
Think of one person in your life, a friend, a family member, a co-worker, anyone, and write five sentences about them in English.
493
Use the phrases we practiced today.
494
He's the kind of person who we've known each other since.
495
One thing I admire about her is we balance each other out because...
496
Just five sentences, simple ones.
497
You don't need to write a whole essay.
498
And then, here's my challenge for you on top of Jenny's homework.
499
Read those five sentences out loud.
500
Read them slowly.
501
Read them with feeling.
502
And then try to say them from memory, without looking.
503
That right there is shadowing practice in your real life, using your real words about real people you know.
504
It's so powerful.
505
It really is.
506
Because when you learn language through things that matter to you, the real people in your life, you remember it so much better.
507
It sticks.
508
