1
Welcome back to the Texas City Dike, y 'all.
2
Welcome back to the channel.
3
Check it out.
4
We just stopped and picked up some live mullet.
5
I asked for the bigger sized ones so that we could get started immediately.
6
Water is nice and calm.
7
We have the wind at our back, so that's pretty cool.
8
I got the cast net just in case we need more mullet.
9
And we have all the creature comforts here chair, rod holders, which we need to set up and hurry up and get two mullet out there.
10
I'm going to send them live and we'll see
11
if that's going to help us out to just have those guys wiggling around.
12
Water level's pretty high.
13
You got it within the rocks.
14
I took a look at the closest buoy from NOAA and I saw that the water level was going to be decent.
15
So that's pretty cool.
16
high water level the temperatures have been ideal for bull reds and that's what we're going for
17
bull red fishing october time frame all up and down the texas coast
18
that's what a lot of people go after this time of the year man where am i gonna put this at
19
all right anyhow we'll we'll figure this out and we'll get started get this one set up first
20
love whenever i can pull these big rods out of storage setup that we're using is an old 18 outfitters
21
surf rod and it's 11 foot seven or no 11 and a half foot
22
medium actually this is a heavy 11
23
and a half foot heavy rod we've got a spinning reel with 64 pound braid probably 200 yards
24
or so so we got the power check out that gorgeous sunrise over there
25
these are the leaders that i use i make them at home they're pretty easy
26
if you're interested it in something like that, you can go down into my video description.
27
I'll link the video on how I make these, but let's explain it really quick.
28
It's two segments, and each segment consists of two feet.
29
I've got a sized 7 -aught circle hook right here.
30
It goes to a barrel swivel so that If the current gets ripping,
31
that swivel will keep turning rather than your line getting twisted up.
32
And then we got another two -foot segment.
33
Some beads to prevent the weight from kinking your fishing line.
34
And then another barrel swivel that ties to your main line.
35
The line itself is 300 -pound test.
36
That's monofilament.
37
It's very thick.
38
I'm not trying to catch a 300 pound fish, I'm simply using the thickness of this line,
39
put it around my hands when it's wet or if your hands are dry.
40
But when it's wet, your skin is very soft.
41
It's easy for a thinner diameter line to slice and cut through your hands.
42
This stuff is not going to do that whether your hands are wet or dry.
43
So that's why we're using the 300 pound test, not because we're trying to catch a 300 pound fish.
44
now to anchor our our bait down at the bottom out there i've got a six ounce spider weight
45
a lot of people say you don't need
46
that it's too much weight i mean whatever works for you it's going to work
47
when the currents start ripping through you'll find
48
that your line starts right here and then it ends up over there
49
and so that's why i'm using a six ounce
50
and these little arms help to dig into the soft bottom that's out there.
51
What you want to do is just basically swing for the fences.
52
When you cast out, try to get it out there as far as you can past all the other discarded line that's out there,
53
the random bits of rocks and what other structure pieces
54
that you have down there
55
that will have a tendency to snag your line you get it passed as far as you can out there
56
and there is a channel because this goes to the port of texas city
57
which is right down that way but there's a channel out here the closer you can get to it
58
the better for you and them fish are going to be coming out in and out of that channel
59
um to come
60
and feed i want a big boy start with the big
61
guys first go right through the eyes at the very back corner like right over here
62
if it was a clock straight up is 12 straight down
63
six you want to go at around 10 o 'clock behind the eye socket
64
that way they're still going to stay alive
65
and this is a very tough piece of the fish so there we go pull that through
66
the technique is just called like bridling your bait then you
67
come to your hook go through one end of the loop go through the other end
68
and then start to twist it to tighten up all that slack
69
when we cast this fella it's basically not going to uh
70
relinquish its grasp and it's not going to impede the the bait from coming off
71
as well and it won't impede him from being able to swim
72
so what you're going to end up with is just a good hookup.
73
There's no part of our hook that's blocked from hooking up.
74
That's a good cast.
75
That thing is out there.
76
Loosen our drag a little bit so when they do bite they can take it.
77
yeah that's good enough
78
all right we'll go get the other setup ready
79
and we're going to be in chill mode for most of the day
80
because this is some you got to have patience style fishing i got this one ready for grandpa to use
81
this reel has 61 pound braid it's a 6 000 series
82
and we've got i think this is 11 the pin carnage
83
3 is 11 feet long it's my son's rod i'm going to use the same style leader
84
the same style or the same like weight as well
85
let's see what time it is 7 .48 we'll probably just give it about an hour before we check them
86
DIY measure board right there for bull reds got this my airframes shop in New York whenever
87
that was like my last duty station they built this for me out of aircraft grade aluminum
88
and so it's going to last a lifetime it's just so
89
that we can measure our catch mine
90
got hit oh yeah go ahead daddy yeah
91
i think i think whatever it was hit it they felt the tension and just let it go
92
because the mullet is not strong enough to put slack into our line
93
so all right let me just put it back
94
and we'll loosen up the drag and wait for the next hit
95
because you said you felt your mullet right yeah cool just
96
put it back inside there false alarm hopefully we get something that's a little bit more aggressive.
97
All right.
98
Check to see if it's time to check my setup.
99
No bites on it.
100
No bites on the other one.
101
It's been an hour now.
102
I want to throw another Another piece of bait on this fella right here.
103
I got somebody's line.
104
This is what I mean by getting snagged my mullet's still alive really?
105
yeah I thought I was using heavy braid.
106
This stuff is like steel cable.
107
Dang.
108
I don't want to keep pulling it with my hands
109
because it felt like it was going to cut through the leather on my gloves.
110
Trying to catch a dolphin.
111
That's super thick.
112
There we are.
113
I'm just going to set a one -hour timer.
114
let me get this net ready i saw some mullet really close by the rocks
115
if they start showing up like
116
that then we should be able to throw this out there
117
and come up with maybe a little bit bigger sized ones
118
yeah they might be bigger like there's a couple of big ones in there you see
119
that one yeah replace the four
120
that we've used already it'll be a lot hardier too yeah
121
because we already got one that's in here belly up yeah that's why i don't like getting
122
bait fish mullet or bait store mullet
123
almost two hours have went by y 'all
124
and what we're gonna do is change locations there's been a lot of people
125
that have left so far because no no bites whatsoever
126
so I parked the truck way down there
127
and just reel it in son six to seven good turns and then reel it in fast
128
yeah let's get a little bit closer
129
which will help us out there's more current moving towards
130
that end of the dike we got these nice flat rocks over here
131
oh yeah these were bigger the ones
132
that we caught yeah look out how much bigger compared to the others he's a lot bigger he's one of that yeah
133
and he's very lively too spunky they they go
134
after it thinking it's shrimp i know oh wait
135
no that's yours yeah it just got hit i saw it bouncing at At least I think I saw it bouncing.
136
Wishful thinking maybe.
137
You start seeing stuff.
138
You think you see it bounce?
139
I don't know.
140
I could have swore I saw it though.
141
Probably the crab ripping my mullet apart.
142
We're seeing that the guy at the very end of the jetty, the one who held out last is leaving
143
so I guess we're the ones who have been out here the longest now
144
because he's leaving we got somebody pulled up right next to
145
us maybe this is is this the same no this ain't
146
the same guy both rods have been soaking for probably an hour and 15 minutes to
147
hour and a half we haven't seen any bites yet
148
so let's do what we can can you hit record on
149
that one see what we can yeah nothing give it a look over
150
and see if we need to put some fresh stuff on there the water is perfectly colored it's nice
151
and calm the wind's at our back
152
yeah i got both of mine on crabs have got them though the crab got one of them
153
I'm going to put
154
two fresh ones on something's
155
on it oh gosh
156
definitely not mullet i wonder if a crab is snagged that's two mullets feels this freaking heavy
157
it feels right in the house it's nothing oh wait you got somebody's line
158
look at that here walk back with it i got it No, almost.
159
I pulled some of it.
160
There it goes.
161
Here we go.
162
Snapped it.
163
So this line was stuck with more line out there and then you can feel it budge and give way.
164
The good thing is, look at this we got it out of there this has got to be a hundred plus pound braid
165
that's the bigger one
166
i don't want to weigh him down with another fella so
167
if he does see something he can swim away if he's trying to swim with a dead one and yeah
168
I may have cast in the same damn direction as our other one.
169
I'll just leave them both out there.
170
See what time it is and give ourselves another hour.
171
12 .30?
172
Yeah, 12 .30, we'll check it.
173
Little rod ties can double as our umbrella holder.
174
I forgot the piece that goes on my tow hitch.
175
so let's see if we can anchor the umbrella down if it doesn't work oh well at least we tried
176
now we got us some shade again whoo man it was hot too
177
good thumbnail
178
this one's yours Liza come get it yeah yeah hold up hold it up at the top
179
there you go
180
He's on mine.
181
I'm going to have to bring mine in.
182
Oh, wait.
183
Am I on two?
184
Oh, gosh.
185
Oh, wait, no. What is going on?
186
I think the line got wrapped around mine.
187
I'm going to see if it's wrapped.
188
I don't know what's going on, like how it...
189
Yeah, just keep bringing it in.
190
I'll figure out mine somehow.
191
I don't know how it got wrapped.
192
No. Just keep on.
193
I'm sorry.
194
There it is.
195
Okay.
196
Nice, son! oh my gosh that's a nice one just bring them over here Oh, my gosh.
197
All right.
198
Holy moly.
199
I know.
200
Good job.
201
All right, buddy.
202
Hold on, hold on.
203
There we go.
204
Hurry up.
205
we'll get a good measurement hold on buddy all right grab it right there yeah don't grab
206
that right there there you go holy cow get
207
him under his belly there you go beautiful all right let's uh get a good measurement really quick
208
and then we'll send them back put his nose over there yeah there you go 37
209
and a quarter 37 and a quarter nice son all right i'm gonna throw him back in okay come on buddy
210
yeah my son my youngest son yeah it's ricardo
211
yeah we saw it too
212
and i was like oh gosh he's taking it i just couldn't believe it
213
that first bite all day i know yeah live mullet we
214
kept them alive we uh we brought we bridled it yeah so
215
the hook is wide open and the mullet the mullet doesn't get jerked um yeah yeah oh my gosh
216
all right let's get another another mullet on there
217
i'm gonna probably have to try to cast net some more
218
because those other ones are just not lively yeah they're not moving at all
219
it's chilling in the shade
220
and you can't ask for anything better i'm getting ready to throw the cast net y 'all
221
because the bite that we just got was from one of the mullet
222
that we cast netted
223
and they're very lively they're vibrant as far as their colors
224
are you know concerned they're not kept in captivity for too long
225
and they stay out there wiggling like crazy i see some big ones like all swimming ever
226
so often okay yeah i don't think i can get him i think that's too far
227
yeah i already ran out of line
228
he said that he saw the rod oh man look at that crushed him huh dang
229
it doesn't matter that's three bites we got
230
thanks again brother yeah
231
if you want to you want to put them i mean i'm not saying
232
that it will work or not
233
but that's all up to you real mind okay just yeah
234
if i had another needle i'd send you with one
235
but all i have is just the one no that's fine all right only four bites
236
that we know of we got lucky enough to get three of them
237
and then the neighbor ricardo got one bite
238
but by the time he said he got to the rod they had let go of his bait
239
We might come back out again tomorrow in the morning, see if it's a little bit better than it is today.
240
It's now 2 .30, just about.
241
It's probably going to be my last update unless we hook into a fish, we get another bite.
242
i just got hit i literally saw them hit it and it went slack i do not feel them on there
243
i don't feel them look they hit it he hit it pretty hard
244
it took the bait no we got some oh yeah
245
My gosh, dude
246
Let's see.
247
I'm going to take a look at it.
248
There we go.
249
We got him.
250
I got it, I got it.
251
Ha ha ha yes, baby
252
i knew i had saw it get hit yeah just let me get him a little bit further in it's taking forever
253
same size goodness i mean i brought him in very fast
254
Just stay there, stay there, son.
255
There you go.
256
You let's
257
get a measurement on him really quick look at that 38 and a quarter one inch bigger
258
sweet finally thank you dear lord all right gorgeous
259
right there y 'all uh yeah you can really uh that's okay i just yeah i'll get a screenshot Gorgeous fish.
260
You know what?
261
Just hurry up. Do it.
262
Thank you.
263
Yeah, like that.
264
Alright, thanks, son.
265
Buddy.
266
We will see you later.
267
Yeah.
268
Belly flop. That stunned him.
269
He'll turn over and take off.
270
Get my rod really quick so I can nudge him.
271
I made him hit.
272
Oh, there he goes.
273
Yeah, there he goes.
274
yeah he took off we just got lucky my goodness
275
he's uh his milk they're here to they're here to spawn oh my gosh
276
well you want to throw another one on and just wait for the battery to die
277
they're just being very like finicky with it they tap it
278
and then they let it go
279
but i left it out there i think that's what sealed
280
the deal for us on being able to catch this guy he came back for it
281
I love it whenever they do hit it because he just starts taking the drag
282
like when they fully commit they just start taking that drag there's no better sound than just hearing it
283
did you get hit oh they hit it oh man We've been keeping our fingers crossed,
284
hoping that you would get one.
285
Oh, he took your bait.
286
And then you heard it?
287
Oh, wow.
288
Oh, man.
289
That's what, two bites for you?
290
Second one?
291
Yeah, we're getting ready to leave here in a second.
292
We'll probably stay here until about 4 .30.
293
yeah both bites were they mullet or crab both of them mullet okay man wow yeah
294
so we're probably gonna stay here for about 28 more minutes
295
and at that point we're going to wrap things up
296
but the bull reds are here they're biting you just got
297
to be very patient cast you out some live mullet swing for the fences
298
and just hold on whenever that bite does go off
299
and what you'll find is the bull reds whenever they pick
300
up your bait they run with it there's no messing around they'll usually hook themselves on these circle hooks But yeah, what an amazing day.
301
Two fish, one for my son, one for me.
302
Two bites over there.
303
We lost, what, three bites on our side.
304
And for those of y 'all wondering why I didn't keep either one of those redfish, they're the breeders.
305
The bigger ones, like the milk came out of the one that I measured.
306
So that's a telltale sign
307
that they're here to do their spawn during the bull red run
308
and i prefer like the 25 inch and smaller redfish they're easier to clean
309
and there's nothing wrong with keeping a bull red in the
310
state of texas you're allowed to keep one per season you can buy extra tags
311
so what you'll do is on your tag you'll fill it out
312
and then affix it to the redfish tail somehow and
313
that lets the game warden know
314
that hey I'm taking this redfish that's over 28 inches home
315
and then you can go buy other redfish stamps
316
if you I think you're allowed to get an extra stamp I'm not too sure somebody correct me
317
if I'm wrong in the comments
318
but I think off the top of my head that's what the rule is
319
but I honestly don't know by heart
320
because i don't keep anything over like 25 26 inches
321
but yeah um a great time out here at the texas city dike
322
so if we don't catch anything else don't hook into anything this is me signing off
323
so thank you all so much for watching i truly appreciate the support
324
that y 'all give if you enjoyed the video don't forget to click
325
that thumbs up button a lot of the gear
326
that we use including the wax thread
327
and the bait needle i'm going to link those in my
328
video description down below y 'all can possibly purchase those
329
and bridle your mullet what that does is it keeps your mullet alive a lot longer
330
and whenever they're down there and a big old redfish comes by it makes them get
331
like super sketched out the mullet now i'd imagine they're gonna start wiggling trying to get away from them
332
and then that it excites the redfish to bite
333
but yeah very blessed to have caught those two thank you again
334
and we'll catch you in the next one tight lines y 'all still alive
335
see if we can save him his eyes don't look popped out
336
oh he's good you're gonna be
337
okay Billy he just swam off that's
338
exactly what I do yeah I ain't stupid he's probably there he is bro I was abducted by aliens
339
uh oh careful
