1
Hello everyone.
2
It is your English speaking friend, Kyle.
3
And today we are doing something that a lot of you have asked me about, conversations.
4
Conversations between native speakers.
5
So we've got two native English speakers today.
6
Your English speaking friend Kyle and Jay from the channel, English by Jay.
7
And just to say guys, Jay's channel is awesome.
8
He's one of us.
9
He's a positive person so go check them out.
10
Jay, could you give a brief introduction, who you are, the work you do on your channel?
11
Yes, thank you for that lovely introduction, Kyle. Of course.
12
My name is Jay and I'm 29 years old from England.
13
I'm also a YouTuber.
14
I've been teaching on YouTube for one year now and before that I've been an English teacher for eight years.
15
A long time now.
16
And yeah, recently I have taken my English teaching and built an online English platform called Sprout.
17
So we have lots of videos where you learn through comprehensible input.
18
And yeah, the goal is to help you guys become fluent in english in a fun
19
and natural way just like kyle's videos all right
20
so guys we will put a link in the description both to jay's youtube channel
21
and sprout go check those out and jay
22
and i might even be doing some things together in the future
23
so i will keep you guys posted on that
24
but this is going to be a two -part discussion and guys this is not small talk okay this is not hey, Jay, what's your favorite color?
25
Jay and I are going to deep dive into life.
26
We're going to talk about so many deep topics today.
27
And the first part of this conversation will be here on my channel.
28
The second part will be on Sprout.
29
So if you guys want to get the second half of this deep conversation, go check out Sprout. So Jay,
30
are you ready to deep dive to really get into this
31
conversation just hold my breath all right let's dive in i'm ready with the first question jay
32
when you introduce yourself not talking about your job not talking
33
about your youtube channel your online persona who are you straight into the deck i it's interesting
34
because Because when we normally introduce ourselves, we go straight into those things, right?
35
Your job, what you do, your name, even.
36
So beneath all that, I would say I am a kind soul.
37
Someone who values human connection and someone who wants to spread a positive message and make other people feel good.
38
And how about you?
39
Well, I like to think I'm a kind soul as well.
40
You know, I don't identify so much with an online persona
41
because I like to think that if you and I met in Vietnam because I was traveling, I'd be the same exact guy that you're meeting right now,
42
and we would possibly even have this same conversation at a coffee shop.
43
We would.
44
But what I identify as is a father to an amazing kid the coolest kid I'm just
45
so grateful for that the husband to a wife who loves me
46
and supports me and I think I'm a fairly selfless person I like to give as well
47
and yeah I'm just I'm trying to leave an impression on the world a good one you know there's
48
so much negativity that I just want to be a little maybe a little light and all of that.
49
Absolutely.
50
That's beautiful.
51
I feel that from your videos as well, your authenticity shines through.
52
And I try to be the same.
53
The world needs more people being themselves rather than trying to put on this persona of being somebody they're not.
54
So it's nice to see that you're shining your light on the world, Kyle.
55
Appreciate that.
56
And right back at you
57
so thank you man hit me jay hit me give me a give me a deep one next question
58
okay so um this question is one i love what values did you learn from your parents
59
or your grandparents beautiful question
60
because those are some of the people who are going to influence us the most right um i
61
feel unfortunate and in a way that I wasn't able to know my Grandparents very deeply,
62
you know My grandmother on my mom's side passed away when I was like three.
63
I have zero memory of her my grandfather
64
Passed to one of my grandfathers passed away when I was less than ten
65
You know so my grandparents I don't I didn't learn a whole lot from them
66
because I was too young to really engage with them
67
and you know know what they were really all about but my father taught me hard work and my father
68
he passed away over three years ago now
69
and we were not close i appreciate it but we were not close
70
because he made a lot of mistakes you know he harmed the family in a lot of ways not violently
71
but because of his errors but he he taught me what not to do.
72
And because of his example, I will never do that to my family.
73
And because I knew what it was like to not be close with my father, my son and I are so tight.
74
So I learned the value of cherishing your family and protecting that relationship by seeing the example of what not to do.
75
And my mom is the most patient person in the world.
76
And seeing how she's dealt with me
77
through my years of the anger
78
or you know the frustration not being a wonderful polite son
79
that I should have been seeing her still be there for me
80
and love me and support me in every way has taught me a patience
81
that I will cherish forever so I would say
82
when I was younger my dad taught me the value of hard work later on
83
when he started making mistakes he taught me what not to do as a man
84
and my mom has just been a beacon of patience and kindness so
85
that's what I've learned from my parents how about you that's beautiful I love how you've taken
86
that it's kind of like an the kind of the opposite of a good value right
87
but you've turned out and made it into something positive
88
and then applied that with you
89
and your son to to give him the sort of relationship that you might have wanted yeah me mine was from my
90
grandma i would say like i've learned a lot from my parents
91
and my grandparents um i had a very close well i still have a very close relationship with my grandma
92
um she's a beautiful woman
93
and she well firstly she inspired my love for language my
94
love of the english language she would always play word games
95
with me as a kid we used to play scrabble
96
which is super fun and she would watch countdown on television
97
which is like a for those who don't know a game
98
show where you have you get a certain amount of letters and you have to make words with those letters.
99
The longer the word, the more points you score.
100
So we would play word games like that.
101
And she would always correct my Yorkshire accent and make me,
102
instead of saying butter, she would get me to say butter or butter in the posh English accent.
103
And yeah, we kind of had this friendliness and this playfulness between us.
104
And she taught me the value of kindness, I would say and unconditional love that has then fed into my life
105
and just been kind of my guiding value moral just always
106
making others feel good in your presence making an effort to make somebody else feel good
107
because feeling good feels good so yeah I've wanted to kind of take her her heart and solve
108
and share it with the world beautiful grandma sounds like a
109
lovely woman shout out to grandma's a lovely his grandmother shout out to barbara
110
if you're watching grandma love you beautiful beautiful okay
111
so kind of sticking with this you know this influence you know the influence
112
that we get from the people around us who has been the most influential person in your whole life.
113
Was it grandma?
114
Was there somebody else who really helped shape you as a person?
115
I think through life we meet many people who shape us both for the good and the bad.
116
Recently I would say the past two years having met Chang she's been a hugely positive influence in my life.
117
and she's helped me grow in many ways helped me believe in myself and believe what's possible
118
helped me see my own potential and we met at a very good time
119
when neither of us were looking for anyone
120
so it kind of yeah there was no neediness there no no wanting to be with someone
121
and therefore i think we attracted each other
122
and ever since it's been a very beautiful fulfilling relationship and
123
if you're watching this Chang love you too yeah it's a
124
really positive change in my life in the past few years
125
and we've been growing together
126
which is the most important thing like having someone who you can fully be yourself around
127
and that you can help them grow
128
and they can help you grow and you can motivate each other
129
and support each other
130
so yeah that's been a huge influence beautiful she sounds like a wonderful lady
131
and that is hugely important to have somebody who supports you
132
and I want to mention something that Jay
133
and I talked about before we started filming and that was
134
that we both film with our significant other with our partner
135
and that is just a beautiful beautiful relationship to share
136
so he and I are both teamed up with our with the wonderful women in our life
137
and yeah that's just a huge asset a huge thing to have somebody who supports you
138
and works with you like that
139
so what was your girlfriend's name was it chang you said chang yeah okay lovely name and chang is vietnamese right
140
she's vietnamese true okay very cool so the person who influenced me the most
141
uh my wife is a huge influence on me as well
142
my son is a huge influence on me i i sometimes
143
say oh yeah i need to ask the smartest person i know
144
and that's my son uh he has awesome
145
so my son has changed me so much
146
but i do want to talk about somebody who changed me for a longer period of time.
147
And it's the person who I call my brother.
148
But here's where it gets a little complicated, guys.
149
This is going to be some good English vocabulary trying to follow me with what I'm about to say.
150
He is my half sister's husband.
151
Now, half sister is means we share one of our parents, but not the other one.
152
So this is my my father's daughter, but she has a different mom than i do she was the child from my father's first marriage
153
and and then she married the person who i call my brother
154
when i was about eight years old
155
so it could be tricky are you guys with me are
156
you are you following me jay well let's first check
157
if i'm with you right we've got we got Kyle
158
and we've got your your dad you say my dad's daughter okay your dad's daughter
159
that I'm seeing a triangle here Kyle Kyle's dad
160
and then two different mums and then your dad's daughter
161
and it's your dad's daughter's husband is
162
that correct my dad's daughter married her husband who I call my brother
163
because they got married when I was eight so it's my whole life that's been my brother.
164
Awesome.
165
So we could, an English point, just to touch on this quick, you're not blood relatives, correct?
166
Yes.
167
Not blood relatives, meaning we don't share any DNA.
168
Well, you know what?
169
I can't say that
170
because we do share 99 .9 % as we learned in one of my last videos
171
but we do not share a direct relation by by family or what we would call by blood in english
172
so sometimes guys you don't have to have
173
that blood relationship to really be family
174
and to love each other like you do have that relationship
175
but my brother
176
which is actually my what would he my brother -in -law my brother has been a huge influence on me
177
and it's because
178
here's a good expression in English he really took me under his wing
179
which means to to really guide somebody to say I'm going
180
to be there for you to teach you how to handle
181
the things you're gonna face in life he really took me under his wing
182
and taught me how to be a man in a time when I really needed it because, like I said, my father started to make a lot of mistakes in his life.
183
My brother was there for me to be that father figure.
184
to Help me grow into a man when I really needed it.
185
My brother gave me my first car He gave it to me.
186
He told me if you get a job and keep it.
187
I will give you a car So I went out.
188
I got a job my first job my brother Gave me a car guys.
189
He gave me my first car.
190
It was a stick shift.
191
So a manual transmission vehicle, which most people around the world are like, well, that's how cars are supposed to be.
192
But here in the U .S., most cars are automatic transmission, meaning you don't have to shift the gears as you drive.
193
So he taught me how to drive that.
194
He gave me my first car.
195
And for as long as I remember he's been somebody I could call and say, hey, I have a problem.
196
I need help.
197
He would be there for me.
198
So my brother has taught me how to go from being a boy into being a hardworking man, and I will forever be grateful to him for that.
199
Awesome.
200
So nice to have that close relationship with someone.
201
It doesn't even have to be by blood, right?
202
They can feel like family, someone who understands you and guides you.
203
Absolutely.
204
He's been a mentor to me, and And he's just the best example of a father that I've ever met.
205
So I'm grateful for that.
206
What was your first job that he told you he would give you his car?
207
Okay, so it's not a glamorous thing.
208
The first job I was able to get was what we would call a fast food job okay
209
and it was a restaurant where they served fish and chicken
210
and I got that job and I became a manager there
211
so it was a really good experience and I love cooking I love food
212
and I got to see how a business works
213
so it was a great experience
214
but you know not a glamorous job my first job was
215
not anything super cool i worked at a restaurant guys
216
but my brother didn't care if i went
217
and got a awesome job paying really good all he wanted
218
was me to show a little bit of discipline a little bit of responsibility
219
and he was going to give me the tool i needed to get there
220
and be a man as he might put it amazing yeah he's like um
221
that idea of discipline and him him showing you the value of discipline
222
and you initiative as well like you having to go do something
223
that you might not want to do
224
but is good for you in the long term
225
because it teaches you more than just a paycheck like you
226
said you'd learn about business you learn about food you learn about showing up um on time
227
and you know those are kind of like habits that will serve you well in life so that's cool absolutely All right.
228
I mean, we could chat for hours on, I feel like, each question.
229
But let's move to the next one.
230
Let's move on.
231
All right, Kyle.
232
I'm curious about this one from you.
233
What powerful idea changed you and how you perceive the world?
234
Well, I think I could talk all day about this one, too.
235
but the real idea that changed me is
236
that what you see in your life is a direct result of what you think on the inside
237
and i'm not trying to say uh you know like manifesting
238
they call it online sometimes I'm not saying any mystical stuff
239
but your mindset yeah I'm not saying cast the magic spell
240
like Harry Potter I'm saying your thoughts directly relate to the results you get in your life
241
and it can be trained
242
so training your mind becoming the master of your mind makes you the master of your life
243
and I've seen that time and time again and I've seen
244
that in turning enemies into people who I could be civil with and even care for.
245
I've seen that in creating this channel.
246
I've seen that in getting opportunities financially with health.
247
In every aspect of your life, the way you think about it, the way you think in general,
248
your outlook, your attitude will determine your results and that's something
249
that i'm absolutely convinced of
250
and you know yeah before i ever held the 100 000
251
subscriber plaque in my hands i held it a hundred times in my mind Before I spoke to Steve Kaufman, I thought about what I would say to that man if I talked to him.
252
The same with Pablo, you know.
253
Before I traveled to Colombia, I thought about what it would be like to be there.
254
And if you're not planning in your mind and thinking positively about the things that you want, you'll never achieve them.
255
You have to give yourself permission in your mind to have those things
256
or else you're going to sabotage yourself with negative habits, negative thought patterns and things like that.
257
So that has been, it is a key in my life.
258
What you see in here, if you are disciplined and you keep going, keep going, eventually you will see it out here.
259
And that has been a game changer for me
260
that sounds like a lived experience wise words from like you having experienced the the converse of
261
that the opposite of the negative habits like you say of
262
mind thinking negatively kind of by default right almost programmed to worry so I I've experienced exactly the same thing and
263
yeah the idea of seeing things in your mind beforehand I actually got a book here Hugely powerful book, guys.
264
If you want to, will that just focus?
265
Let me tell you.
266
Okay.
267
Called The Power.
268
And just like your point there, Kyle, the idea of like you, before you go into Columbia,
269
before you hold in the 100K plaque or talking to Steve Kaufman and Pablo, you saw it in your mind.
270
So there's a super simple idea in that book, which is imagine it, feel it, and receive it
271
which is maybe going into harry potter territory a little bit more um you know manifestation spiritual
272
but the idea is that your mind is a powerful tool and if used correctly
273
and combined with the power of love joy gratitude energetic emotions thought form combined with this energetic charge
274
and imagination basically it allows you like kyle said to
275
bring anything that you want into your life and and if you do it enough and you repeat this
276
thought process and pattern then your default state becomes positive thinking
277
and the world just seems more colorful
278
because your focus is is on what's good instead of what's bad
279
and and if you don't train your mind in this way it's like a dog
280
and the dog might you know follow a scent
281
and go sniff some other dog's piss if you bring it back
282
and you bring it back into the present moment um
283
and focus on what's good then you know the dog's going to eat some cheddar cheese um
284
for that analogy but yeah i love this idea
285
and it's very cool
286
that you've lived the same experience as me um you talked
287
about you used to be a worrier right you used to be anxious
288
and not always this positive yeah and uh to what you mentioned about
289
that book i do want to say i think there is definitely some spiritual
290
and mystical aspects to this but i don't like to scare people off at first
291
so i'm just saying me neither yeah completely practically right practically positive thinking changing your mindset
292
but i uh yeah i could dive deep into the spiritual stuff too
293
because i think there's definitely an aspect of that and i just want to share one other thing is that
294
every night before i fall asleep i visualize as i'm falling asleep what i want in my life
295
and that just cements it in your subconscious mind
296
and it gives you wake up the next day feeling like it could be possible
297
and if you don't believe in your heart
298
that you can do something you'll never do it
299
so you've got to believe that you can do it
300
and training your mind is how you train yourself to believe
301
so i jay we could do a video about this later
302
too where we just dive all into this i uh i
303
could i could talk i'm already writing it down for ages yeah write that down
304
um we could make a lot of sprout content for that
305
but to what what you said what you mentioned about being a worrier, being a worrier is a huge understatement.
306
So being a worrier is somebody who, you know, thinks negatively, thinks,
307
oh, this is going to happen bad to me.
308
You know, I'll never have this. Or, you know, what
309
if somebody breaks into the house? that's being a worrier I
310
was somebody suffering from severe anxiety from just in a prison
311
of fear I would say waking up in the morning feeling like there's a monster in my room
312
because my heart is beating so fast and it was all because
313
didn't know how to train my mind and I was letting the dog run around and sniff piss.
314
That's a beautiful analogy
315
and you know I read a quote from Siddhartha Gautama better known as the Buddha
316
that said your thoughts are like a monkey who is drunk
317
and got stung by a bee and he's gonna run around
318
and go crazy and only when you stop chasing him can he rest
319
so you have to stop following those thoughts thoughts are gonna come
320
but you have to stop following them you have to say I'm gonna be in this moment
321
and I'm not going after
322
that thought about what I did 10 years ago I'm not going after that thought about what could happened wrong.
323
I'm not going to chase that drunken monkey.
324
I'm not going to let that dog go around and do what he wants.
325
I'm going to train it to sit.
326
And that's why a meditation that I find so powerful is to put your focus right here.
327
Think about nothing but keeping your focus right here.
328
And when a thought comes, don't chase it.
329
Keep your focus right there
330
and that's not home in a temple you know trying to reach nirvana that's teaching your brain
331
that it's okay for a thought to come you're not
332
that thought you're not evil
333
because you thought of bad thought leave it alone let it come
334
and let it go
335
so this idea of training my mind has changed me from somebody who felt
336
so anxious that I would make an excuse not to see my best friends.
337
You know, I would make an excuse not to go get lunch with somebody who I care about
338
because I was so nervous.
339
I didn't want to leave the house.
340
I was stuck in my bed and, you know, I had a son who needed me and I, I did everything I needed to do,
341
but I was just dying inside it was terrible i was i like to say
342
that that is what hell is in my
343
my perspective hell is a state of mind the devil yeah of being tortured by your your own mind and
344
training my mind has taught me
345
that you're not your thoughts you don't have to entertain them
346
and it's changed me into a confident happy person that's extremely extremely valuable advice and And at the moment,
347
it's your lived experience, Kyle.
348
So you've experienced that.
349
I've experienced the same thing, like, you know, a lot of anxiety in the past.
350
And you've given such a simple idea of closing your eyes, right?
351
Meditation gets thrown around and people talk about it and no one really knows what it means.
352
But essentially, the way I think about it, again, from a practical standpoint,
353
it helps you focus and focus where? focus on right now
354
and that makes you let's say 20 % happier
355
so Kyle just saying okay you're going to close your eyes
356
and just just look up almost into your forehead and
357
that just it just kind of quiets the monkey from running around
358
and you know screaming it quiets your mind and a thing I wanted to add on to that valuable piece of advice,
359
Kyle, is just, I believe in micro habits, tiny little habits that you can do every day that compound over time,
360
that add up over time.
361
So taking Kyle's idea of closing your eyes and looking up into this area here, doing that for just one minute a day,
362
you know, grabbing your phone, which I'm sure you all have, set a one minute timer and just do that close your eyes
363
and look up into the top of your head you can then install
364
that into your into your hardware if you will
365
if we're going to use the computer analogy
366
and over time like I say it compounds
367
and then you become happy you you do you might still have those negative thoughts they might creep in
368
but you're better at knowing to recognize them
369
and then therefore you can just let them come let them go like kyle wonderfully put absolutely
370
and when you start one minute will be near impossible
371
but you train it every day yeah
372
and yeah you know i could sit in a meditation for an hour
373
and it'll feel like five minutes because that monkey knows who's boss
374
yeah absolutely we could get super deep on this
375
but i feel like we'll move on for now
376
but we could go really deep into this topic so
377
if you guys do want to see a me
378
and cal talk about this for another two -part series um then yeah let us know in the comments
379
that would be I love this stuff, and you know, it's nice to meet you and share this kind of lived experience,
380
and valuable for me, and it seems for you, and I hope for other people.
381
It goes beyond English, but it also helps your English learning journey
382
because it helps you enjoy life
383
and experience the richness of life without the mind constantly wandering away and kind of stealing from,
384
stealing your happiness in the moment.
385
Absolutely.
386
All right, Jay, this is this is a question that I love asking people.
387
And, you know, I feel comfortable talking to you because we're very similar people.
388
But this is really our first in -depth conversation, right?
389
So it's really cool to get to know somebody in this way by skipping all of that.
390
You know, how old are you? what's your hobbies
391
and getting into seeing who they are as a person
392
so great I want to get to a very deep question
393
that I love to ask Jay what is your biggest fear
394
well I could be blunt about this give you five letters I think the fear
395
that most people on this planet Earth have.
396
D -E -A -T -H.
397
Yeah, I suppose it is death and yeah, I change how I think about this.
398
Sometimes I'm scared of it and other times I feel at peace with it.
399
And I think that kind of, on the one hand, it can be a paralyzing thing.
400
It can make you scared, make you not want to think about it.
401
But on the other hand, it can charge you into life.
402
And it can make you realize that, okay, well, my time on this planet is finite, meaning that it will end,
403
but who I am on a deeper level, energetically, is infinite, right?
404
We're made of the same elements that were formed in the Big Bang 13 .8 billion years ago,
405
from stars essentially, and that energy lives on after we die.
406
So while this physical body won't
407
be here that is unknown and that makes me scared it's that fear of like not being here anymore but then
408
if you liken it to going to bed at night right
409
you wake up in the morning you have no idea what
410
just happened for the past eight hours besides maybe a few weird dreams
411
so it's that level of unconsciousness you don't know about it
412
and and it's okay and the world goes on and And if you can do your best, like I am trying to, to make a positive impact on this world,
413
help whoever is living right now to live with more gratitude and joy and love, then, and also affect future generations, help the planet in the future,
414
if I can, and kind of, you know, prolong the human race,
415
humanity living on planet Earth so yeah it gives me
416
while it's terrifying right not gonna lie it also gives me a sense of purpose
417
and another huge idea is that love dissipates all fear so
418
when you shine light and love on on the fear of death then it dissolves
419
and actually there's a strange sense of peace
420
beautifully put beautifully put thank you this one is yeah do you want to talk about yours
421
i just i'd like to just talk about my thoughts on death maybe that's more interesting
422
please i'll just say so we're on even ground since you shared a fear with me my fear
423
would be that my family could get hurt and i couldn't protect them
424
that would be my deepest sphere but let's talk about my thoughts on death
425
because i think i have a wildly hot take on death
426
and jake do you think you could explain what a hot take is very simply for our audience
427
do you know a hot take do you know i think
428
that's more american than it is english oh i'm just out
429
of touch with the kids okay i can't explain what a
430
hot take is is it like is it a controversial take a very controversial controversial opinion on something okay okay
431
so now now Jay knows what a hot take is too
432
guys I'm ready mate I'm ready for your hot take okay so my hot take on death is that
433
While I want to be on this earth for as long as I can, I'm actually not afraid of that moment at all, and I almost welcome it with open arms
434
because one of my biggest goals apart from everything I want to accomplish is to have lived a life
435
that I'm proud of
436
and in my last moments tell my family don't worry guys
437
don't cry dad's about to go on the last great adventure
438
and like you said about energy you know not ending not
439
that energy has to go somewhere it doesn't just disappear that's
440
a law of energy you know you there's a reaction
441
so it has to go somewhere and
442
when my moment comes I want to meet it with a smile
443
so that's my my hot take on death guys I don't fear it
444
and I hope it happens I hope it happens when I'm old
445
and have loved and lived for a long time but when that moment comes, I want to hold my wife's hand and tell my son, I'm so proud of you.
446
Don't worry about that.
447
I'm about to find out what happens.
448
Cruise into the cosmos.
449
So speaking of that deep topic, right?
450
The end of life.
451
I have one last question for you, my friend.
452

453

454
