1
In this video, I'm traveling to a military-run country in Southeast Asia.
2
In 2021, Myanmar underwent a military coup, and the military has been running things ever since.
3
Myanmar's military staged a coup, setting up checkpoints, taking over TV stations, and detaining civilian officials, including their leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
4
The country became unstable, chaos ensued, and tourism plummeted.
5
At least 18 people reportedly killed the bloodiest day since the coup a month ago.
6
In fact, the US lists Myanmar as a level 4 destination, advising travelers, do not travel.
7
But today, I'm going there.
8
Bye-bye.
9
Myanmar is a country with amazing food and culture.
10
Last time I was there, it was under a democratic government.
11
So, what happened?
12
For years, Myanmar had been slowly transitioning toward democracy, with Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD party becoming dominant.
13
In November of 2020, the NLD won a landslide election, but the military rejected the results, claiming massive fraud.
14
On February 1st, 2021, the military launched a coup, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and the elected government.
15
Then, they seized power.
16
Since then, it's been over five years.
17
I want to see what the situation is really like on the ground, and if tourists are still visiting Myanmar after all that's happened.
18
Welcome to Myanmar.
19
Time to find out.
20
It's almost 2am and I've just gotten to my room, but take a look at this place.
21
So you get all this when you come to Yangon, Myanmar for only $105 a night which is an incredible value.
22
Now if you're sharp you may recognize that this is the same hotel I stayed in last time.
23
Yes, I came to Myanmar just three or four months ago but I only went to three places.
24
The airport, this hotel, and the hospital where they removed my appendix.
25
I just got out of surgery.
26
I feel like it was so bad.
27
Now I am back for the trip I initially planned to do.
28
Tomorrow we are going out into public.
29
We're gonna be using the camera.
30
We're gonna be documenting real life here in a country that's just been turned upside down in the last few years.
31
But in the meantime, I'm gonna get some sleep.
32
Good morning from Myanmar.
33
It is the nice day.
34
So this morning is gonna be my first time actually going out into the city
35
and seeing what it's like to document a video here video
36
here even though the country is under a really strict state of control.
37
Is it gonna go well?
38
Is no one gonna care?
39
Am I gonna be told to stop shooting or worse?
40
Let's go find out.
41
For our first experience here in military-run Myanmar, we've come to Shuaidagon.
42
This is a beautiful temple.
43
It's big, it's majestic, it's amazing.
44
Before we go in, I want to give you a little bit more context about what's going on in this country.
45
In 2021, there was a military coup, and the military took over everything.
46
But recently, there was an election, and they elected a president.
47
The ruling military junta claims the process marks the return of democracy,
48
but opponents say the poll is an attempt by the army to try and win legitimacy on the global stage.
49
But here's the thing, the same guy who initiated that coup, he's the same person who was elected.
50
So either this guy has to write...
51
Hi, how you doing?
52
All right.
53
I want to say things people shouldn't hear.
54
Hold on.
55
Hold on a second.
56
So either this guy should write a book on leadership or a book on how to rig an election.
57
I think it's the second one.
58
That said, there are still new strict laws, rules, and curfews taking place throughout the country and there's still a civil war happening here too.
59
So all of this has led to the USA designating this as a level 4 do not travel country.
60
And that means that the tourism here has just been obliterated.
61
Tourism in Myanmar reached over 4.3 million visitors in 2019.
62
But by 2025, that number fell to just under 1 million, mostly coming from China, Thailand, and South Korea.
63
Now, as you can see, I'm here.
64
It's possible to come here.
65
Actually, it just was as easy as filling out a visa, flying here, and walking through.
66
But I think most people are scared about the possible outcomes of visiting a place like this.
67
Right now, I'm in one of the city's biggest tourist sites.
68
My mission while we're here at this location is to look around and see if we can find any foreigners.
69
And if we can, I want to ask them what made them brave enough to come here to Myanmar.
70
So far this Myanmar trip is going well, but last time I was here, things got bad fast.
71
A few months ago I had a medical emergency mid-shoot in the country of Myanmar.
72
I had to get an emergency surgery in a country I was barely familiar with.
73
What that experience taught me is that when things go sideways on the road, you need one thing more than anything else, to be reachable.
74
When you're that far from home, your phone isn't a convenience, it's everything.
75
That's why Olaf Fly's new always-on benefit is so important.
76
You still get the unlimited data eSIM for the destination you're traveling to.
77
But now as an Olafly customer, you also receive the always-on benefit every month.
78
Once you install your Olafly eSIM, you automatically get 1GB of backup data every single month, already active before you land.
79
No top-up, no action needed across 70-plus destinations.
80
It's the kind of thing that exists so when something goes wrong, and something always goes wrong, you're not left scrambling.
81
Olafly's new always-on feature is now available for all customers.
82
Use code SUNNY at esim.olafly.com or at checkout on their app for 5% off any esim
83
and 10% off their global subscription plans.
84
QR code on top, linked down in the description.
85
Now, back to the show.
86
Since we're in one of the holiest places in the country, no shoes allowed, I feel like my bare feet is much more sacrilegious than me with shoes on.
87
Behind me, we're about to go through security, which may be an issue because I have this, a mic box.
88
So it's time to put me MR to the test.
89
Is this gonna be a big deal or not?
90
So, we just went through security, not a problem.
91
The alarm went off and they said, yes, go ahead.
92
We don't care.
93
Here's what's funny about cultures is you can change the leadership, but these are the same people I remember.
94
We are inside the pagoda now and this place is stunning.
95
It's beautiful and it's sad that there's so many outsiders, people from foreign lands who feel like they can't come here.
96
What's unusual to me is that in coming here I expected to see people more scared, hiding, but this place is full of domestic tourists.
97
Now that is not to say that there are no issues here, but if you were plopped down here and never knew anything about the news, you wouldn't think that there was anything going on here.
98
Hey, film this so people know I'm such a good person.
99
No, don't film this man, it's just my personal thing.
100
So we've walked all around the pagoda, this is the biggest pagoda in Yangon, and no tourists.
101
I saw thousands of people, and not one person that stands out from the rest.
102
Everyone here is Burmese.
103
I'm not giving up.
104
We're gonna go somewhere else now.
105
Somewhere where we can get closer to locals and try some food.
106
We have come to General Aung San, a giant market where they sell absolutely everything everything and here we have a new mission.
107
From this point in the video we're going to experience life in Yangon at three different socio-economic levels.
108
Right now we're starting in the market, a place that's very affordable and a place where most people in the country can afford to get food.
109
From here we're going to go to more of a casual dining location and then a more expensive location within the city, a place that few could afford.
110
The goal is to kind of witness life in Yangon at every level
111
but my goal here at this market specifically is to connect with the local people, See how people react to shooting, which so far seems like not a big issue, and try some food.
112
Welcome to the snack section.
113
Now, here's what I love about snacks in Myanmar, is that it feels like any other Southeast Asian food, but when you look more closely, the food is something like you've never seen before.
114
Right here, we have a local nut or a seed.
115
It starts with this, but then they boil it, it becomes like this, and finally, they pound it.
116
Right here, she has her mallet, she pounds this nut or seed into a little bit of a pancake, and from here, she fills it up.
117
All of these are already soaking in an oil and then she puts this kind of coconut paste on the inside.
118
Right here we have the final product.
119
Let's try out our first food here in Myanmar.
120
I'm gonna try to take this in one bite, fold it over.
121
It's shining.
122
It is so greasy.
123
Wow, how does the nut get like that?
124
The texture of the pancake gets incredibly dense.
125
Beyond that, inside it is a coconut oil.
126
It's very potent.
127
It's very flavorful and so rich.
128
I can see why people love that.
129
So she says now that I've tried this oily dish, I need to try something else to balance it out.
130
Right here she's taking some pounded sticky rice and using the scissors to cut it up.
131
You can see embedded on the top it looks like there is some black sesame seeds.
132
That is our base.
133
So here she puts on some shredded coconut and she tops it with some palm syrup.
134
Thank you.
135
Ah, thank you.
136
This is gorgeous and huge.
137
I want to try just this alone.
138
It is so sticky.
139
Oh, there we go.
140
Let's give it a shot.
141
That palm sugar, it's kind of like a liquefied brown sugar.
142
Very sweet, but a little bit earthy.
143
Then right here, I want to get this bite with all this coconut on top.
144
Mmm.
145
You cannot get a coconut experience this fresh in the USA.
146
As people are ordering, she continues to refresh and restock her ingredients.
147
She has half a coconut and she's using this tool to create some shredded coconut.
148
Boom.
149
Done.
150
She dumps it out and that's ready for the next customer.
151
Moving on to the next food.
152
Right here we have our second snack food.
153
This is what I call a stuffed tofu pocket.
154
Right now she's about to assemble one from scratch.
155
It all starts with tofu that is very thin that she splits open with her fingers.
156
Ah, the first thing she puts in is salt.
157
Right here we have some lime pulp, then some sliced chilies, a little bit of fish sauce, some cabbage.
158
This is a combination of sugar and peanuts.
159
And finally, I'm told this is kind of like a shallot jam.
160
Let me give just that a try.
161
Oh, actually, after tasting it, that's not onion at all.
162
That is garlic.
163
A lady has just come to fan me.
164
This is incredible service.
165
Thank you.
166
That said, let's give it a shot.
167
Oh wow!
168
I'm in love!
169
I'm not the biggest tofu fan in the world, but that is a nice vessel to carry all of these ingredients.
170
Beyond that, it turns out the first thing she put on there, it wasn't salt, it was MSG.
171
MSG is like salt on steroids.
172
Right here, another delicious bite.
173
The cabbage just gives it some body, the chilies give it some heat, the fish sauce makes it extra savory.
174
It's pretty incredible.
175
A good start, let's keep moving.
176
What's sad about walking through here is that you see so many trinkets, paintings, stuff for tourists to buy and take away and bring home But there's one problem.
177
No tourism.
178
So I don't know how these people are holding on but God bless them.
179
I think this is like a restaurant storefront right here.
180
If I'm not mistaken, it seems like you could order through this window And perhaps this is someone's meal right here.
181
Like a pie waiting on a windowsill to cool down.
182
Looks nice.
183
Ooh, I stumbled upon something.
184
Pan.
185
Actually, the correct term in Myanmar is kūnyar, a type of chewing tobacco, usually made with beetle leaf, a hit of slaked lime, tobacco, and this.
186
But, uh, I'm not sure what that is.
187
Thank you.
188
Okay, so I'm told this is meant to be chewed on and then spit out.
189
What is that middle hard part?
190
That'd be on the...
191
Oh!
192
Oh no, I'm gonna get high.
193
Oh no, I'm viewing it.
194
I gotta spit it out before I get high.
195
Thank you so much for that experience.
196
Oh, you know what?
197
Uh, double-edged, give it to the next one.
198
Thank you.
199
So far, locals are surprisingly comfortable being on camera, with a handful even asking for pictures.
200
Still, I haven't been able to find a single tourist.
201
Then this woman walked by, a British lady who's lived in Myanmar since before the coup.
202
I'm kind of just exploring how the tourism has dropped a lot, especially because the U.S has designated this a level 4 travel advisory, advisory, US has to not travel.
203
Do you see tourists here much at all?
204
Not really.
205
Maybe business tourism is here.
206
Just from your perspective, are people from the outside overreacting?
207
Are they misinformed?
208
Like they're just seeing one side of the story?
209
I don't think they're overreacting.
210
It's just because it depends where you are in the country, so you have to be super aware.
211
Where would you not go?
212
Wherever they told me not to go.
213
So you do have to be thoughtful about where you go?
214
Oh, absolutely, yes.
215
Fair enough.
216
Thank you so much.
217
This is one outsider's perspective, and soon I'll share my own.
218
But first, I need to find something to eat.
219
Hello.
220
How you doing?
221
Oh, you're looking for food.
222
I'm looking for food.
223
That food's there, other side. That side?
224
Yeah.
225
Okay, thank you.
226
Yeah, yeah, okay.
227
Can you believe that guy?
228
Trying to trick me?
229
Keep me away from the real good food?
230
Aha!
231
I knew it!
232
We just found a restaurant here in the middle of nowhere.
233
Right here there's literal mountains of food.
234
We have shredded papaya.
235
Right here we have some fritters, shrimp fritters, but I've never seen fritters quite like this.
236
Many of them have a shrimp kind of fried or baked into it.
237
This is like how my wife and I are oriented on the bed usually.
238
This is me, and then this is my wife, and then this is just no man's land.
239
Moving on, Right here you can see clearly this is a bean sprout that they've kind of battered and fried.
240
What I'm told is people don't actually usually eat it like this.
241
This gets cut into a salad with more ingredients.
242
But I do want to take a bite into this side of the bed.
243
Always trust the locals.
244
Don't do what I just say.
245
Virtually flavorless, stale, old, greasy, not pleasant.
246
I want to give her the benefit of the doubt.
247
I want to see what this is usually actually made into.
248
Step one, she goes to the side where she has some shredded cucumber.
249
From here, she takes the shrimp off of the fritter, and then she uses the scissors to cut the fritter into smaller, more manageable pieces.
250
Wow, you can see even with that scissors, it's tough to get through it.
251
Boom.
252
Now the shrimp, she cuts the head off, and then the rest of the body gets cut into thin little pieces.
253
From here, she puts in MSG, some prawn salt, then we have a bean flour, Some chilies go in next, then she puts in a combination of oil and garlic.
254
Finally, fish sauce goes in along with tamarind sauce.
255
From here, she gives it a bit of a mix.
256
Finally, she puts it on a plate and then just tries to completely obstruct my view.
257
And that is how you make a fried Burmese prawn salad.
258
I was worried about the cucumber at first, except for the dish swallowed up the soul of the cucumber.
259
Everything is just kind of a dark shade of orangey red.
260
Time to give it a shot.
261
Mmm.
262
Can I tell you my honest first impression?
263
That's not my favorite thing ever.
264
It tastes stale and old.
265
The fried sections of bean sprouts, they taste like they were fried yesterday.
266
The shrimp is very hard.
267
Everything else, hmm.
268
Not blowing my moccasins off, I'll tell you that.
269
Luckily, I have not broken the bank with this dish as it only costs 7,000 in the local currency.
270
So right now we've been in the market for a couple of hours, and I can say how I feel now
271
when I came to Yangon is how I felt years ago
272
when I came here came here like the people the interactions everything feels pretty similar
273
and i thought it was going to be drastically different people are happy
274
that i'm here when i'm shooting nobody seems to mind
275
but they do care
276
if you talk about one topic in particular i met a local a moment ago i won't show his face
277
but i was asking him was there way more foreigners and tourists like in 2019
278
not really no you know it's some kind of you know the topics that i can't talk about unclear
279
Seems like the same.
280
Yeah, I guess.
281
So it was clear and obvious that he didn't want to be seen on camera talking about that.
282
As far as I can tell, in Yangon, life is moving forward except for you can't talk about the thing.
283
But this is just one city and Myanmar is a big country and there's a lot of different ethnic groups, regions and local tensions that are happening elsewhere.
284
For me as a tourist who just wanted to come here, it seems like the coast is clear for now.
285
From the very affordable market food, we have come here to a mid-price restaurant, a place known as Traditional Myanmar Food House.
286
Here we're going to be trying an iconic and traditional food of Myanmar, the tea leaf salad.
287
It's a salad, but it's made with tea leaves.
288
Welcome to the salad station.
289
The most important part of this dish would be the tea leaves.
290
Right here we have, I would say, over five pounds of tea leaves.
291
This is like ten tea leaf bushes all condensed down into this right here.
292
Beyond that, there's another key ingredient.
293
Some told locally they're called Indian beans, but there's also a combination of peanuts and toasted sesame seeds too.
294
Now, those items are already right here on this plate.
295
And in a moment, she's going to take this, mix it with some other flavors, and make a classic Burmese tea leaf salad.
296
Let's get to it.
297
All of that is going to head into this bowl.
298
From there, cabbage joints.
299
Then tomato.
300
From here, some fish sauce.
301
Now it's time for some MSG and some bean oil.
302
Next, she hits it with some lemon and then gives all of that a mix.
303
Once it's done, she literally grabs a fistful of salad and puts it onto this small saucer here.
304
Next, some garlic and some chilies goes on too.
305
And that is how you make a Burmese tea leaf salad.
306
Here we have come to a pure flavor station.
307
Let's take a look at what they got here.
308
This is a dry looking fish curry with a ton of chilies.
309
Beyond that, they have some chicken over here.
310
Here they have some fried pork.
311
And then my favorite, over here, this is a deer meat curry.
312
I didn't even know people were eating deer here in this country of Myanmar.
313
So, from here, I'm gonna slice my curry, sit down, and try it out.
314
For everything you see here, the total price is about $11.19.
315
Not expensive, but certainly not as cheap as food you could find in the market we were just at.
316
Before we try this out, I wanna talk a little bit more about the restaurants.
317
When you come here, you can definitely see the people eating here are from a different slice of society.
318
These are people who have more funds to go out and have a good time.
319
Beyond that, the restaurant style itself is interesting.
320
All the food is pre-made.
321
You order it, you say what you want, they scoop it up, and it's at your table within minutes.
322
Another thing that makes it stand out for the market is that people here eat with gloves.
323
Now, I've gone with deer because I've never had deer in my curry.
324
This is a rich, oily curry.
325
It's just pure oil dripping out of here.
326
Let's give it a shot. That is incredible.
327
It tastes like it's been roasted or grazing for a long time, so the meat has broken down just like a roast.
328
Whoa, this thing is just absolutely loaded with spices.
329
Steer curry, 10 out of 10.
330
Amazing.
331
But then we have this.
332
I got raw garlic.
333
I've got some cabbage in there for body.
334
I've got some chilies to add a little bit of heat.
335
That's a nice looking bite.
336
Mmm.
337
Mmm.
338
It's a little bit sour, and I wonder if that is from the tea leaves.
339
But beyond that, this thing is full of flavor in general.
340
You've got fish sauce, you've got citrus, you've got the seasonings of the gods.
341
MSG.
342
But then there's the texture.
343
These fried beans, even though they've been sitting in this wet salad now for 20 minutes, they're still crunchy as heck. So good.
344
So this is our second location and we still have one more very expensive location coming up.
345
But first, there's something I want to talk about, something that I can't talk about too loudly.
346
And that is the conditions on the ground here in Myanmar.
347
Now, if you watch this video so far, you might get the impression that everything here is kind of hunky-dory, it's fine, the people are happy, and on the surface, that seems to be true.
348
But there's something going on here that people call a quiet struggle.
349
It's uncertainty and pressures around things like inflation, the cost of fuel.
350
I mean just weeks ago there were people
351
or lines at the gas stations that would take hours
352
and hours in order for people to be able to fill up their vehicles.
353
It's not just a waiting game.
354
For some, it's a matter of luck.
355
In cities like Yangon, motorists can queue up to six hours just to get fuel.
356
And then I heard a story a moment ago that absolutely horrified me.
357
You see, a couple months ago there was a curfew here in Yangon.
358
People couldn't go out past 6 or 7 p.m.
359
Now that curfew has been lifted, but restaurants are still closing pretty early.
360
Why is that?
361
Well, I've been told by locals that that's because people are afraid of potentially being kidnapped.
362
That the government has gone out.
363
They've found young people around the age of 20, 21, 22, 23.
364
They kidnapped them and they bring them to go fight.
365
Fighting in this country's civil war.
366
So this is really a two-faced city at this moment.
367
And so that's something I try to keep in mind during this video
368
and while I'm here is that what you see here is just one side of the story.
369
That said, let's head to our final and most expensive location.
370
Behind me, a place known as Burma Bistro.
371
Inside, they're making what they call casual dining, but I think they're acting humble.
372
Soon I'm gonna reveal the prices and let me tell you, you're gonna be shocked, but not for the reason you think.
373
Let's go inside.
374
Right now we are in the kitchen.
375
We're about to see how they make their classic, Broomie-style fried rice.
376
Let's get to it.
377
Take it away.
378
Okay.
379
Okay, action.
380
Go.
381
Step one, walk away and ask the head chef what to do.
382
It all starts with a very hot wok that he's just put some oil into.
383
Right here, we have a tomato paste.
384
He doesn't even try to dodge the flames.
385
He's hoping they consume him.
386
Boom.
387
Next, the rice flops in.
388
I've never seen a stir-fried rice that starts with tomato paste.
389
From here, we have an in-house soy-based sauce.
390
A little bit of oyster sauce, chicken powder.
391
This right here is just pure chicken powder.
392
From here, the chef looks at me.
393
I look back, confused, uncertain.
394
What shall I do?
395
What are you, what are we looking for?
396
You gotta use your, use your words my man.
397
Ah, somebody is coming through.
398
We need to plate this sucker.
399
He takes the bamboo, puts the rice inside.
400
He plates it, but we're not done yet.
401
I know because he walked away from me just now.
402
Then we wash dishes.
403
So right here we have our rice, but that is just our base.
404
Soon we're gonna be crowning it with this, a pork skewer cooking in the convection oven.
405
Cook faster.
406
Time has passed and we're ready to wrap this puppy up.
407
The oven has been opened.
408
He uses tongs to remove this that's gonna go on top of our fried rice, but that's not all.
409
Moments ago, these mushrooms were also in the convection oven.
410
Here's proof.
411
Right here, we have a combination of carrots, onions, other vegetables, coriander, stuff.
412
And that is how you make Burma Bistro's signature fried rice.
413
This right here is our final and most expensive meal of the day, and you can see this is a pretty big upgrade from that shrimp salad.
414
That was rough.
415
So right here we have a ginger salad plated beautifully in a banana blossom.
416
First, ginger, shredded green and purple cabbage, thinly sliced red and green tomatoes, carrots, shallots, and white seaweed all dive into a mixing bowl.
417
Next, some fried beans add a bit of crunch.
418
Now for the flavor.
419
Roasted bean powder, fish sauce, lime juice, and some vegetable oil to bind it all together.
420
All of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed before being placed on a banana blossom leaf.
421
Served alongside crispy tofu and raw flavor enhancers like chilies, garlic and fresh lime.
422
The salad looks extremely fresh, super fragrant and full of vegetation.
423
Behind it, we have this, a tofu cracker.
424
Let's give it a shot.
425
That was a tough bite.
426
I couldn't get a clean break from it.
427
The tofu cracker is a little bit stale.
428
It's not as crumbly as a cracker would usually be.
429
That said, the actual salad itself is amazing.
430
It's super delicious, umami, fresh.
431
The most surprising part about it is that it's just completely soaked in oil.
432
Well, you know what?
433
The oil, it's a nice touch.
434
That said, this is a ginger salad.
435
I barely tasted ginger.
436
Moving on to our final food.
437
This is this restaurant's take on Burmese style fried rice.
438
This seems to basically just be tomato paste and a few other flavors tossed in and that's it.
439
Does it taste like typical fried rice?
440
Is it gonna have wok hay?
441
Let's find out It definitely has It definitely has that wok hay flavor, but that's it.
442
There's not a lot of texture.
443
There's a lot of vegetables There's not a lot going on
444
and it doesn't taste overly tomatoey pretty surprising something I've never had before
445
But of course the fried rice is not meant to be eaten alone, and that's why we have this right here a pork skewer
446
I'm gonna attempt to slide it off of the skewer and keep it intact.
447
Boom victorious This is definitely a more lean part of the pig.
448
Alright, let's give it a shot.
449
The marinade is wonderful.
450
It's very spicy, but the pork itself a bit on the dry side.
451
And that's because they're using this cut of meat that just really doesn't have much fat.
452
Definitely if I had to pick a favorite between the two, this right here is my absolute favorite, which even surprises me.
453
But what's more remarkable than me enjoying a salad is the price here.
454
If you add everything up that's on the table right now, the total comes to about $16.50.
455
This is one of the more expensive places you could go
456
to in this town yet two meals together is sixteen
457
and a half bucks
458
That would be like a dream where I'm from even though
459
this is inexpensive to me as an outsider here in this city This is a pretty expensive restaurant.
460
It's the type of place people might come to maybe once
461
a month food wise It's been interesting to see how much the quality changes
462
when you go from food that costs about a dollar To something
463
that costs about 15 times
464
that one dollar food is something you're gonna find on the
465
streets You're gonna be sitting on a lowest long stool You're gonna be in the heat
466
and you're gonna be sweating a lot from your neck for some reason Meanwhile places like this air conditioning.
467
I've got great service and I got food that is Instagrammable
468
In the restaurant I couldn't exactly speak freely about what I wanted to say about Myanmar
469
and actually in doing a video like this I have to be careful to not implicate any local people.
470
I talked to several people today
471
and off-camera They'll be honest with you about what's going on
472
but on camera somebody speaking badly about the current government situation could get in serious trouble.
473
So I settled today to try to understand what it's like living in a country that's run by the military.
474
And in the end, it's a mixed bag.
475
In some ways, it seems better than I thought.
476
That said, I think a lot of the struggle, pain, and difficulties people are going through are not so obvious on the surface.
477
That said, this is still just our first day here, and I have a lot more to learn about this country.
478
The next question is, would I suggest someone travel here?
479
There's this dark or morbid idea that when a country has a conflict, has a terrorist attack, that's the best time to go.
480
The weird upside for foreigners is that it's actually pretty easy to come here, but beyond that, it's insanely affordable.
481
So one perspective might be, hey, here you can come and get really nice hotels for $100 a night, and you can eat like a king.
482
Meanwhile, there are no tourist traps because there are no tourists.
483
So I'm not saying come here to take advantage of the situation people are in, but come here to support the people who need that support.
484
But do not come here if safety is your highest priority.
485
This is not the most safe travel destination, but it is certainly a unique one.
486
And here, you're definitely going to have a story to tell once you leave.
