Hi friends, welcome back to Daily English Talk.
2
Hey everyone, I'm Tom and this is Lily and we are your English learning friends.
3
And if this is your first time here, we are so glad you found us.
4
Please write your English level in the comments.
5
We are talking about a day in an American life.
6
Like, what do real people actually do from morning to night?
7
Right.
8
Not the movies, not the TV shows.
9
Real life.
10
Coffee, commutes, lunch breaks, all of it.
11
And we have so many natural, everyday phrases for you today.
12
The kind of English you actually need.
13
So, grab your notebook, get comfortable, and let's do this together.
14
But first, we have a question for you.
15
Ooh, yes.
16
So, later in this episode, Tom is going to tell us a story about something very funny that happened to him during his lunch break at work.
17
Oh no, are we really doing this?
18
We are absolutely doing this.
19
So here is the question for you.
20
Great.
21
Just great.
22
What do you think happened to Tom at lunch?
23
Did he forget his food at home?
24
Did he spill something?
25
Or did he order the wrong thing completely?
26
It's worse than all of those options.
27
Ooh!
28
Okay, so comment below, You were right.
29
Okay, Tom, let's start from the very beginning of a typical American day.
30
What time do most people wake up?
31
Oh, people wake up early, like 6 or 6 :30 in the morning.
32
Yeah, Americans love an early morning.
33
Well, love is a strong word.
34
More like they have no choice.
35
Okay, fair.
36
So, you wake up, what's the very first thing most people do?
37
Grab their phone and check it for like 15 minutes.
38
Yes, that is too real.
39
you grab a coffee.
40
Oh, coffee is very serious in America.
41
Very serious.
42
Some people make coffee at home, some people stop at a coffee shop on the way to work, but almost everyone has coffee in the morning.
43
And then what?
44
You head to work?
45
Exactly, you head to work.
46
Some people drive, some people take the subway or the bus, some people work from home now, which is very common.
47
Oh yes, working from home became really popular in recent years.
48
walk to your home office.
49
Or your kitchen table.
50
Or your couch, let's be honest.
51
So then you work through the morning, and around noon or 12 o 'clock, you take a lunch break.
52
Yes, lunch break.
53
And this is where your story happens, right, Tom?
54
Yeah, we'll get there.
55
We'll definitely get there.
56
After work, usually around 5 or 6 p .m., people go home and then they do things like cook dinner, hang out with family, watch TV, or go to the gym.
57
And on weekdays, most people go to bed around 10 or 11 p .m.
58
hang out, go to bed.
59
Simple, busy, and very, very caffeinated.
60
Perfect description!
61
Okay, let's talk about something important in today's conversation.
62
Did you notice we used a lot of verbs together, like "grab coffee" or "head to work"?
63
Yes, these are called verb + noun combinations, or we can call them collocations.
64
A collocation is when two words go together naturally in English.
65
Native speakers always use these combinations.
66
They sound very natural.
67
For example, we don't usually say "take a coffee" in the morning.
68
We say "grab a coffee." And we don't say "go to work" only.
69
We also say "head to work." Both are correct, but "head to" sounds more casual and natural.
70
Another example, we hang out with friends, not spend time with in casual conversation, just hang out.
71
So today, we are going to teach you the most important daily routine collocations.
72
These are phrases that real Americans use every single day.
73
Learn these and your English will sound so much more natural.
74
Ready?
75
Let's go.
76
Okay, phrase number one: wake up.
77
Wake up.
78
This means to stop sleeping and open your eyes.
79
Very simple, very important.
80
I wake up at 6 :30 every morning, but honestly, I hit the snooze button like three times first.
81
Oh yes, the snooze button.
82
That is a very American habit.
83
culture.
84
Now let's practice.
85
Repeat after me.
86
Wake up.
87
I wake up at 6 :30.
88
I wake up early every morning.
89
Great job!
90
Phrase number two.
91
Grab a coffee.
92
Grab a coffee.
93
Grab means to quickly take something.
94
So grab a coffee means to quickly get a coffee.
95
I always grab a coffee before I do anything in the morning.
96
It's like my brain doesn't turn on until that first sip.
97
Same.
98
I actually went to work once without my coffee and I forgot my own name for like the first hour.
99
I'm only slightly exaggerating.
100
Repeat after me.
101
Grab a coffee.
102
I grab a coffee every morning.
103
I grabbed a coffee on the way to work.
104
Excellent!
105
Phrase number three, head to work.
106
Head to work.
107
Head to means to go somewhere.
108
It's a casual, natural way to say go to.
109
You can also say, "I'm heading out." That means I'm leaving now.
110
Every morning I head to work at 8 :15.
111
I try to leave by 8, but it never happens.
112
Never?
113
Never.
114
There's always one more thing I forgot to do.
115
Repeat after me.
116
Head to work.
117
I head to work at 8.
118
She heads to work by bus.
119
Perfect.
120
Phrase number four.
121
Get stuck in traffic.
122
Oh, this one.
123
I know this one too well.
124
Get stuck in traffic means your car cannot move because there are too many other cars on the road.
125
In big American cities like Los Angeles or New York, traffic is very, very bad.
126
People can sit in traffic for one hour, sometimes two hours, just to get to work.
127
That sounds so exhausting.
128
It is.
129
I got stuck in traffic for 90 minutes minutes once and I just sat there listening to the same song on repeat. Which song?
130
I'm not telling you.
131
It was embarrassing.
132
Repeat after me.
133
Get stuck in traffic.
134
I got stuck in traffic this morning.
135
She gets stuck in traffic every day.
136
Well done.
137
Phrase number five: Take a lunch break.
138
Take a lunch break.
139
A break is a short time when you stop working.
140
So a lunch break is when you stop working to eat lunch.
141
And this is where my story happens.
142
Yes, Tom, tell us.
143
Okay, so, one day I decided to take a lunch break at this nice restaurant near my office.
144
I ordered a big bowl of soup.
145
And then I was very carefully walking back to my table, and I...
146
I tripped.
147
And the soup went everywhere.
148
On my shirt, on my pants, on the floor.
149
Tom!
150
And the worst part, the absolute worst part, I had a very important meeting at 1 p .m with my boss and his boss.
151
No!
152
What did you do?
153
I went to the clothes store next door and bought the only shirt they had in my size.
154
It had a picture of a large, smiling frog on the front.
155
You wore a frog shirt to a meeting with your boss's boss.
156
I did.
157
And you know what?
158
Nobody said anything.
159
I think they were too confused.
160
That is the best story!
161
Repeat after me.
162
Take a lunch break.
163
I take a lunch break at noon.
164
He took a lunch break and spilled his soup.
165
And maybe don't order soup.
166
Phrase number six: get off work.
167
Oh, my favorite phrase: get off work.
168
This means to finish your workday.
169
I get off work at 5.
170
That means my workday ends at 5 :00 p .m.
171
That feeling when you get off work on a Friday, there's nothing better.
172
Absolute freedom.
173
Ha ha ha.
174
Repeat after me.
175
Get off work.
176
I get off work at 5.
177
What time do you get off work?
178
Amazing.
179
Phrase number seven, hang out.
180
Hang out.
181
This means to spend time with people in a relaxed, casual way, not formal, just fun time together.
182
You hang out with friends.
183
You hang out at home.
184
You hang out at a coffee shop.
185
After work, a lot of Americans hang out with friends for a little while before going home.
186
Maybe they grab a drink or go for a walk or just sit and talk.
187
Americans work hard, but they also really value their social time.
188
Hanging out with people is really important.
189
Repeat after me.
190
Hang out.
191
I hang out with my friends after work.
192
Do you want to hang out this weekend?
193
Great.
194
And our last phrase, phrase number eight: "Call it a night." Oh, I love this one: "Call it a night." This means to decide to stop doing something
195
and go home or go to sleep.
196
You might say, "I'm exhausted.
197
Let's call it a night." It's like saying, "Okay, we are done for today.
198
Let's go to bed." After a long American day of waking up early, grabbing coffee, heading to work,
199
maybe getting break, hopefully without the soup disaster, getting off work and hanging out with friends.
200
You call it a night.
201
Sounds exhausting when you list it all like that.
202
It does, but it's also a full, good life.
203
Repeat after me.
204
Call it a night.
205
It's late, let's call it a night.
206
I called it a night at 10 p .m.
207
Well done.
208
Okay, let's do a quick review of everything we learned today.
209
Today's topic, A Day in an American Life, and here are the eight phrases we practiced.
210
Number one, wake up to stop sleeping.
211
Number two, grab a coffee to quickly get a coffee.
212
Number three, head to work, to go to work.
213
Number four, get stuck in traffic, when your car can't move because of too many cars.
214
Number five, take a lunch break to stop working to eat lunch.
215
Number 6: Get off work to finish your workday.
216
Number seven, hang out, to spend relaxed, fun time with people.
217
And number eight, call it a night, to stop and go to sleep.
218
These are eight phrases that real Americans use every single day.
219
Now you can use them too.
220
And now, one more time, let's say all eight phrases together fast.
221
Wake up, grab a coffee, head to work, get stuck in traffic.
222
Take a lunch break carefully.
223
Get off work.

233
Describe your typical day using at least three of these phrases.
234
Write it in the comments below.
235
We read every single one.
236
For example, you could write, "I wake up at 7, I grab a coffee, and I head to school." Or maybe,
237
"I get off work at 6, and then I hang out with my family." Use your own day.
238
Use your own words.
239
There is no wrong answer.
240
And if you want to say, "Yes, I will do the challenge," just comment,

247
We are here with you every single day.
248
Okay, before we go, remember our question from the beginning?
249
Oh yes, the soup.
250
the answer.
251
Tom spilled an entire bowl of soup on himself right before an important meeting, and showed up wearing a crab shirt.
252
A smiling crab.
253
Very professional.
254
If you guessed he spilled something, you were absolutely right.
255
And if you guessed crab shirt, I don't know how you knew that, but respect.
256
Respect!
257
And if you are watching this for the subscribe button and turn on notifications so you never miss one.
