1
The only way that we consumers have of telling these media corporations
2
that we don't like their content is to vote with their wallets.
3
Well, what happens when the corporation tells you they literally don't want your money?
4
Hey, y'all.
5
SnarkyJ Cosplay here.
6
So, Disney has finally admitted the quiet part out loud. For years,
7
we've been complaining about how it doesn't seem like they know what the hell they're doing with the Star Wars franchise.
8
How many of their latest releases have been unimaginative live-action slop.
9
I mean, we've been b*ing about everything Disney puts on the big screen for I don't know how long at this point.
10
And every time we get into this discussion, the same theme comes up.
11
Vote with your wallets.
12
Stop paying to see this garbage.
13
Stop taking your kids to see it.
14
Stop paying for it to review it.
15
And we used to think that that would work, but unfortunately Disney has finally said the quiet part out loud.
16
And it seems like they could not give a sh less what they make at the box office.
17
I'm gonna elaborate more on that in just a second, but first and foremost I do have to acknowledge I look a little toasty right now.
18
I look a little bit like an undercooked hot dog, or overcooked hot dog, depending on your cooking method of said hot dog.
19
I have just taken wasting away again in Margaritaville a little too seriously.
20
I had all the intentions of wearing sunblock, but once I was on the sand and the daiquiri I'd had kicked in, suddenly I thought
21
that the very little melanin given to me by the Puerto
22
Rican side of my family would be enough to protect me from the sun.
23
And much like Icarus paid for his own hubris
24
when his wings of wax melted upon him flying too close to the sun, he plummeted to the sea.
25
I am sunburnt as f* because I thought I was stronger than the sun.
26
Anyways, let's get down to brass tacks here now that that's out of the way.
27
The CEO of Disney, Josh Diomaro, or Diomaro, however you choose to pronounce it,
28
he just came out and admitted that The Mandalorian and Grogu and Moana,
29
the live-action version, both underperformed at the box office, which is the understatement of the century.
30
The Mandalorian and Grogu went on to gross only $345 million worldwide,
31
which was even less than any of the films in the sequel trilogy,
32
and the live-action Moana remake stands to lose probably almost a hundred million dollars, if not more, for Disney,
33
being that in its entire theatrical run so far, it's only earned 262 million dollars.
34
And you would think that's gotta raise some red flags, right?
35
These people should sit down, they should figure out a direction for the Star Wars franchise.
36
They should look at live-action remakes and ask themselves why they do so poorly, even when they're almost shot-for-shot remakes of the film they're based on.
37
You would think that all these discussions would be about to be had, if they weren't already being had already, and you would be wrong.
38
I'm gonna read you exactly what the CEO had to say, okay?
39
Even when our franchise films don't meet our box office expectations,
40
our investments in these core properties fuel other parts of our company.
41
Well, what other parts of the company are those?
42
I'll tell you.
43
The Mandalorian and Grogu drove healthy growth and retail sales for the Star Wars franchise,
44
so toys, and drew guests to the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World,
45
and led to significant engagement in gaming as well.
46
And the live-action Moana is expected to be a strong title on Disney+, building on the success of the original film,
47
which is one of the most streamed movies of all time.
48
I want you to think about that for a second.
49
They just looked at a box office flop and said, I don't care, we sold toys, people went to the theme parks,
50
and people might stream this.
51
That's it.
52
So I ask Disney, and I ask you to think about this as I start ranting,
53
if your movies fail and you still consider them a success,
54
what incentive do you have to make better movies?
55
This whole thing isn't just about two movies.
56
This may explain why so many fans of Disney and fans of properties that are being sodomized by Disney,
57
Disney now feel like quality has become secondary to keeping the IP machine running.
58
So let's dig into the meat and potatoes of this, okay?
59
Because technically if we're talking about the box office, the movie is the product.
60
They're selling you the movie.
61
They're not just selling you movie tickets, they're selling you on the idea of the movie.
62
So let's talk about film not as IP but as a product.
63
In this society with this viewpoint that Disney has, the movie is no longer the product.
64
Years ago, the movie as the product was defined entirely by ticket sales.
65
The success of a film lived and died by ticket sales.
66
But today, Disney just owns too much for that to be true.
67
They've got their hands in streaming with Disney Plus, they've got the theme parks, they've got cruise lines, they've got merchandise,
68
they have video games, they have licensing, and suddenly the a movie is not a movie.
69
The movie becomes a commercial for everything else that they can sell you before and after.
70
And that, babies and gentlemen, is a fundamentally different incentive than making the best movie possible.
71
And let's talk about that incentive, right?
72
I mean, we just said it.
73
The incentive has changed.
74
Back in the day, success of a film was a really easily measurable thing.
75
You'd make an incredible movie, hopefully, word of mouth would spread, and your movie would end up having some really strong legs at the box office,
76
people would go and see it, fans would come back, and maybe you could even build a franchise.
77
Those were the old ways.
78
What are they doing now?
79
Well, now they need to keep the franchise alive.
80
They need to keep certain characters relevant, or trash old irrelevant characters to make space for new ones that they want to make relevant.
81
They want to sell toys.
82
They want to refresh the brand, you know, throw Yoda out the window for Grogu.
83
They eventually want to feed Disney+, right?
84
You're paying for that streaming platform, so they want to have a steady stream of content to drop on the platform, and they also want to give the parks something to market,
85
which is why it's not a coincidence
86
that they ended up giving the Millennium Falcon ride a Mandalorian
87
and Grogu themed overlay during the time that they were promoting the movie.
88
And I don't know about you, But suddenly, all of this sh makes sense when you look at it through that lens.
89
Think about the Moana remake, right?
90
I sat here, a bunch of other people sat here.
91
We were all like, why the fk are you remaking a movie that's barely even 10 years old?
92
The answer, my friends, is not demand.
93
The answer is because Moana's a billion dollar brand, Jan.
94
The remake just refreshes merchandise, marketing, streaming, the parks, Halloween costumes, shelf space.
95
Whether audiences wanted it or not becomes secondary to the money
96
that they know that they can get outside of the box office.
97
And that's why fan satisfaction matters so much less than it used to.
98
And that is the core issue with this whole thing.
99
If Disney is now measuring success by what is basically an entire economic ecosystem,
100
then one disappointed moviegoer is not as damaging to the brand as it once was.
101
See, you can hate the movie, and you can complain about it, you can even choose to boycott it, and Disney still wins.
102
Your kid inevitably watches it on Disney+, and pumps up their streaming numbers.
103
You yourself probably buy a plush Grogu for the secret Santa that you can't stand at the office, but you know their entire personality is this little green thing.
104
You inevitably visit Epcot on your trip to Florida because you went down with the grandparents, your kids want something to do, of course they want to go to Disney World,
105
and they have Journey of Water with Moana at that park.
106
You might want to go on a booze cruise, but your wife says no. And the only way you'll get
107
that woman on a boat to maybe give you a little bit of attention once the kids are away is
108
if you go on a Disney cruise where you can send them to the kids' club for 12 hours.
109
And we're in back to school season, baby!
110
Well, your son loves the Mandalorian and Grogu on his backpack, and your daughter thinks Moana's just the coolest.
111
So there you go.
112
You even bought the matching backpacks.
113
That, my friends, is a completely different business model.
114
The box office doesn't mean anything, and they just said it.
115
And I really feel like I've had a f*ing epiphany about this whole thing.
116
I saw that article, and it was like, it f*ing blew my mind, because the whole disconnect was finally made clear to me.
117
We, for years, have continuously said Disney never learns.
118
Well, folks, from Disney's perspective, they don't have to.
119
There is no lesson to be learned here.
120
Because if every disappointing movie that they put out still strengthens the brand, then nothing is really forcing them to change.
121
In all fairness, it's not just Disney that does this, right?
122
Forget it.
123
Every major studio now wants franchises that make money outside of the theater.
124
But Disney, unfortunately, has become the clearest example of this strategy.
125
And the major difference is that they were the only brand with the cojones to say it publicly.
126
It's frustrating as hell, but also relieving.
127
Because for years, we've been asking ourselves, we've been asking each other, we've been asking Reddit,
128
which is the one place you should never ask anything we've continuously asked why Disney continues to make decisions
129
that seem totally contrary to what the fans want.
130
And this article just answered that question.
131
If the movie is just one piece of a much larger business machine, then pleasing moviegoers isn't necessarily the top priority anymore.
132
And maybe, just maybe, that's why so many Disney movies today feel less like films
133
and more like two-hour advertisements for the Disney brand.
134
And that's all from me.
135
I've been Snarky J.
136

And let me know if Disney got your money in any one of these ways.
142
If you didn't buy a ticket, but you spent money in any of the other ways described.

I just want to know.
