179
To make matters worse, when this happens, and it happens to a lot of students, they can destroy the rest of their test because part three is coming up.

206
So hopefully you spotted that they don't stick to the bullet points.
207
Instead, what they do is they focus on the main topic.
208
So they're always talking about the main topic at the top of the cue card, but they're not necessarily using all of the bullet points.
209
What they do instead is we give them the freedom to add other bullet points.
210
This strategy allows them to talk about the main topic, but it gives them the freedom to only talk about things
211
that they feel comfortable talking about at length related to that main topic.
212
For example, if you got this cue card, you might feel very comfortable talking about these two bullet points,
213
but this third bullet point is only going to take maybe a few seconds to discuss.
214
And this fourth bullet point might be on something that you know nothing about, or you don't feel very comfortable talking about that.
215
But there might be other things related to the main topic you feel more comfortable talking about.
216
It's easier for you to talk about those things, such as a description, a story about that main topic, how you feel about that main topic, or the past or the present or the future,
217
or anything that you find easier to talk about as long as you're talking about that main topic.
218
Now, should you talk about all of those ideas?
219
No, only the things that help you speak fluently for up to two minutes about the main topic.
220
only do things that help you do what the examiners are looking for.
221
Now let's move on to, in my opinion, the most difficult part of the whole speaking test, part three.
222
So why is it so difficult?
223
Listen to these students and focus more on the questions being asked.
224
Listen to their answers, of course, but think about how the questions being asked are different from part one and part two.
225
For bonus points, think about how you might respond to each question.
226
Are there any important festivals in your country that celebrate a change of season or type of weather.
227
I'm not sure about this.
228
What role does natural talent play in mastering a skill?
229
I'm sorry, can I have the question again?
230
Yeah.
是的。
231
What role does patience play in achieving long-term goals?
232
So as you just heard, part three questions can be a lot more challenging than typical part one and even part two questions.
233
But like everything with the IELTS test, the problem is not the questions.
234
The problem is the common strategies that most students use to answer them.
235
So let's start off by telling you the things that you should not do.
236
The number one thing that you should never do in part three is give no answer at all.
237
So this has happened thousands of times.
238
I've asked a question in part three and a student has just been like, literally nothing has come out of their mouth.
239
I've had other students who just burst out laughing for some reason.
240
But what you are saying to the examiner, if you give no response or burst out laughing in their faces, I don't have enough English to answer this question.
241
That's very, very important because it is an English test.
242
But don't worry, I understand many of you are probably thinking, but what if I get a question I literally cannot answer?
243
I don't have anything to say.
244
Don't worry, we'll give you a strategy in a second for how to deal with those types of questions.
245
The next thing you should never do in part three is give a very, very short answer.
246
Now, the reason why students give very, very short answers is often nothing to do with their English in part three.
247
It's often because speaking for 15 minutes in a foreign language, in a test that is going to determine which country you live in in the future is very, very stressful.
248
A lot of students are just fatigued, they're tired, and they want the whole process to be over.
249
So even subconsciously, they will give very short answers because they want the examiner just to say the magic words.
250
That's the end of the speaking test.
251
So you should never give short answers and you should never give up.
252
And we call this surrendering.
253
It's just people putting their hands up saying, Please, I give up.
254
Just let me go.
255
You must never do this.
256
Because again, how the examiner interprets this is you don't have enough English to answer this question.
257
And how we stop our students from surrendering is we give them this little trick that not many people know about.
258
During the test, the examiner is looking down and they have a range of different questions.
259
And when they get to part three, they have some questions for the students who are at a band five, band six level
260
and then they have more difficult questions for the students that are a band seven, eight, and nine.
261
This is so that they can separate out the different bands.
262
If they are asking you one of the very, very difficult questions, you should be happy, all right?
263
Because that means they think that you are capable of getting a band seven, eight, or nine.
264
So our strategy is to try and get the examiner to ask more
265
and more difficult questions and the more difficult they get, the happier you should be.
266
And how you will get there is by always giving an answer and always developing your answer.
267
So how can we do that?
268
The first and most important thing is always attempt an answer.
269
But what if you have no idea?
270
What if it's about a topic you know nothing about?
271
You could do something like this.
272
I'm not too familiar with the topic of AI and its relation with education.
273
However, in my knowledge, I do know that AI is developing more and more.
274
and it might be able to replace some teachers' jobs or tasks, but it will not replace the trait of empathy.
275
Remember, it is not a knowledge test.
276
It is not a test of your knowledge of that topic.
277
It is a speaking test.
278
If you don't give an answer or a very, very short answer, you're saying to the examiner, my English is not good enough.
279
But if you attempt an answer in the way we showed you, you're saying my knowledge of that topic is not high enough.
280
And that indicates to the examiner that they need to switch topics
281
in order for you to show how good your English actually is.
282
Believe it or not, the examiners want you to do well, but you must signal to them that this is just not a great topic for you.
283
But if you say nothing, then what you're really saying is I'm not good enough to answer any question on any topic.
284
But even though it is this huge fear of students about what if I get a topic I know nothing about,
285
it is far more likely that you will get a topic you can speak about, that you do know a little bit about.
286
So how can you show the examiner how great your English level is with a topic you know a little bit about?
287
Watch this clip and think about what the student does in terms of how they structure their answer.
288
What skills does a person need to be a great chef?
289
Interesting.
290
I think, I mean, from what I've heard, I've never worked as a chef or worked in a kitchen before, but I think it takes a lot of trial and error.
291
So for that reason, I would imagine that the person would have to be very patient.
292
And with that patience, you need to have an inherent passion for the food that you're making.
293
I think chefs usually specialize in one or more cuisines.
294
so just having an understanding of the background of the spices
295
where it comes from of the meat where it comes from
296
if you're not passionate about that it can probably tire you out to be that
297
invested in learning so patience passion
298
and a good environment like access to good teachers access to

So they did four things.
303
A, they directly answered the question.
304
They then explained why they think that or why other people think that.
305
They then backed it up with examples or you could use a personal story.
306
And then they developed the answer even more by showing the other side of the argument.
307
Often for part three, they will ask you questions where there are two sides to the answer.
308
Or you could give a new point.
309
But here's the key lesson for the entirety of the speaking test.
310
What do all of these band 7, 8, or 9 students have in common?
311
Well, when you're speaking to a band 7, 8, or 9 student, it doesn't feel like a speaking test.
312
It feels like having a normal conversation.
313
These higher level students answer questions naturally.
314
And one way they do that is to steer the conversation to things they feel comfortable talking about.
315
It's easy for them to talk about these things.
316
They don't use tricks or hacks to try and cheat the test.
317
The test cannot be cheated.

319
and to show the examiner the score they truly deserve.
