1
Good morning.
2
I made a video not too long ago called An Old Man's Advice.
3
Wow, looking at me, it looks like I need to trim my beard a little bit.
4
But I received several requests to continue on with that.
5
And so I've decided to share a little bit about myself and my life and my hardships and my successes with you.
6
You know, this world today is tough.
7
It's tough for young people.
8
And it's tough for people that for years have had jobs
9
and security and made good money and been able to take care of their families.
10
And some time ago, as you know, jobs were shipped overseas to improve the bottom line of big companies.
11
And I thought I'd tell you a little bit about myself.
12
I quit school when I was in a 10th grade.
13
My mother and father left me standing on a street corner.
14
And so it was up to me to make it.
15
And I had a job working at a shell filling station.
16
And I went to the owner and I told him my situation.
17
And I was making a dollar an hour, and I asked him if I could work more hours.
18
And so I began working 90 hours a week.
19
And during that time, as I've said before, my home was the back of an old car.
20
And I worked my 90 hours a week.
21
And I took my baths in a polling station restroom.
22
and I washed my clothes, my private clothes, in the sink.
23
And once in a while, when I was really hungry,
24
I would go to the grocery store and snitch an apple or an orange.
25
Now this was in the 50s.
26
Things were a lot different than they are now and I'm convinced
27
that the owner of the grocery store knew what I was doing
28
because it was about a half a block away from where I worked and he knew me.
29
Now I've said before that good things nor bad things last forever. And that's true.
30
And I began to learn different things.
31
I knew in my soul that if I had nothing to offer,
32
I was as far as I was going to go.
33
now unemployment at
34
that time was very high on the other hand in the 50s you could go into a corporation
35
and ask for a job and get it
36
and after I'd worked 90 hours a week for a long time I went into the service I was 17.
37
In the service, I taught myself to read and write.
38
The first book I picked up was a book written by Louis Slumore and had 196 pages in it.
39
I'll never forget it.
40
It was a cowboy story, a western.
41
and there were words in there
42
that I didn't know I didn't understand I had no idea what they were so I got a dictionary from
43
the service library
44
and as I would read if there was a word
45
that I didn't understand I would look it up and I will tell you now it took me almost three weeks to read 196 pages
46
but I read and I continued to read
47
and in several months I was reading two
48
and three books at a time and I knew where I was in every single one of them.
49
So that's what you can do.
50
A person's mind is incredible.
51
Your mind is incredible.
52
As a young person, regardless of what's happening in the world today, you have opportunity.
53
And don't you believe for one single minute what they say in the media.
54
because if you aren't getting ahead and you need to get ahead, position yourself to learn.
55
Go to the library and learn.
56
You are the backbone of this world.
57
Young people, without you, this world is nothing.
58
Nothing.
59
You are the backbone of this world.
60
You are the future leaders of this world.
61
You are the ones that see the greed of the people that are running it now.
62
You are the ones that see the waste of the people that are running it now.
63
We need you.
64
We need your minds.
65
We need your hearts.
66
We need your lives.
67
We need your loves.
68
We need you to care.
69
And I know that you do care.
70
Oh, I see young people stepping on a flag and throwing rocks and rioting.
71
That's frustration.
72
Frustration.
73
It's frustration with the establishment, and I understand it. But that's not you.
74
Don't let that be you.
75
Rise above it.
76
You're better than that.
77
Rise above it.
78
Anyway, I got kind of off track there.
79
But anyway, as I went on and I got out of the service,
80
I had begun to write and educate myself.
81
I got a little bit of college.
82
And I continued on through my life with that.
83
And you can do the same thing.
84
You don't have to have a doctorate or a PhD or a master's degree.
85
What you have to have is determination.
86
You have to have an inner will to get things done.
87
You have to have a desire.
88
And I know the desire is there.
89
Because as I said before.
90
Without your brains.
91
Without your ambition.
92
Without your drive.
93
This world will be nothing.
94
Nothing.
95
Because old people like me.
96
Die off.
97
I have been successful.
98
Not tremendously successful.
99
But I have a decent retirement.
100
I live with my lovely wife in Arizona.
101
I've had financial problems.
102
Everyone has those. But you can't stop.
103
You can't quit.
104
You can't say, I'm a failure.
105
You're not a failure.
106
You're not.
107
You're a wonderful, strong, intelligent youngster.
108
Take advantage of that.
109
Trust in God.
110
Trust in yourself. and step forward.
111
Put one foot in front of another.
112
Let me give you an example.
113
I've had a couple of businesses.
114
They weren't tremendously successful, but they were successful.
115
I've written books.
116
I have presently probably 13 or 14 books in a publication.
117
My latest is Copper Penny.
118
It's in paperback on Amazon.
119
Look it up.
120
so you can do it I did it
121
you can do it I'm 76 and to my last breath I will encourage young people because I love them
122
I will encourage young people because I know they are the future you are the ones
123
that must save the oceans you are the ones
124
that must save the air because those that are in power the bottom line unfortunately for many,
125
many of those in power all over the world is wealth and power over others.
126
So I'm going to close this now, but I just wanted you to know that people like me,
127
old soldiers, old people, we understand.
128
And as old as I am, I would pick up my cane and defend you to my last breath because I love you.
129
So I'm going to stop now.
130
But just remember, never quit.
131
Never quit.
