Good day everyone and welcome to Learn English with Blaine.
2
We are doing our Friday advanced dictation.
3
Our topic is work and the focus is on nouns and let's get into the instructions.
4
So I'm going to give you five different dictations
5
and I will say each dictation once
6
or each passage once at a normal rate and I will repeat each passage two more times but much slower.
7
So the goal here is to simply write as much as you can
8
and then I will show you the passage at the end.
9
And again do not worry if you make a few spelling mistakes
10
or if you miss a few words the important thing is
11
that you practice so this is going to be listening practice
12
and then writing practice one more thing remember to underline the nouns after you write your dictation
13
so you are going to listen and then write down what you hear me say
14
and then after you write it down you are going to underline the nouns after you write your dictation.
15
Remember that nouns are people, places, things, and ideas.
16
Okay, do you have your pen and paper ready?
17
Okay, so get your pen and paper ready,
18
and then you are going to listen and then write what you hear.
19
I'm going to show you an example first.
20
So imagine if I said,
21
I was late the other day because my car broke down on the way to work.
22
I'm glad I have an understanding boss.
23
He didn't get mad at all.
24
So I just said this.
25
I was late the other day because my car broke down on the way to work.
26
I'm glad I have an understanding boss.
27
He didn't get mad at all.
28
So in this sentence, you would underline I,
29
car, work, and boss, and he,
30
because these are the nouns.
31
Okay, so this is what we're going to do in the following five dictations.
32
Okay, dictation number one.
33
I think I'm going to have to work late today
34
because my boss gave me several important projects to work on this week.
35
I hope my schedule returns to normal next week.
36
Okay.
37
I think I'm going to...
38
I think I am going to...
39
have to work late today.
40
have to work late today because my boss because my boss gave me several
41
gave me several important projects to work on this week.
42
important projects to work on this week period
43
or full stop I hope my schedule I hope
44
my schedule returns to normal this week returns to normal sorry
45
I I think I said this week I should say next
46
week I hope my schedule returns to normal next week
47
and I'll repeat that I hope my schedule returns to normal next week okay
48
so this is I'll give you a moment to underline the nouns
49
and then I'll show you what I said okay I think I'm going to have to work late today
50
because my boss gave me several important projects to work on this week.
51
Period.
52
I hope my schedule returns to normal next week.
53
So in this dictation we've got the nouns I,
54
we have another one here this is another one that I did not underline,
55
I and I, boss, projects, and schedule.
56
Okay so these are the nouns for this dictation.
57
Dictation number two.
58
We are going through some big changes at the office right now,
59
comma, including moving to a new office and hiring some new staff, period.
60
We are going to be busy working on these things.
61
We are going through
62
some big changes
63
at the office right now.
64
comma, including moving to a new office,
65
including moving to a new office,
66
and hiring some new staff,
67
and hiring some new staff, period.
68
We are going to be busy.
69
We are going to be busy working on these things.
70
Working on these things.
71
Okay, so I'll give you a moment to underline those nouns.
72
okay let's take a look we are going through we are
73
going through some big changes at the office right now comma including moving to a new office
74
and hiring some new staff we period we are going to be busy working on these things
75
so in this situation we've got several nouns we've got
76
we we've got changes and then we have office so we this is people of course changes is a thing
77
office is a place and then we've got these two gerunds
78
which are also nouns moving and hiring so in this case these are nouns
79
that they look a little bit like present continuous verbs but these these are actually a type of noun called a gerund.
80
And then at the very end here we've got things.
81
So that rounds out the nouns for dictation two.
82
Let's go ahead with dictation number three.
83
We had a very we had a very interesting meeting at work today period.
84
We talked about how we could increase productivity and at the same time,
85
comma, create home work balance.
86
We had a very interesting meeting.
87
We had a very interesting meeting at work
88
today at work today period we talked
89
about we talked about how we could how we could increase productivity,
90
increase productivity and at the same time and at the same time comma
91
Create home work balance create home work balance and i'll give you a moment to underline the nouns
92
okay we had a very we had a very interesting meeting
93
at work today period we talked about how we could increase productivity and at the same time create home work balance.
94
So in this dictation we've got we,
95
we've got meeting, we've got work,
96
we again,
97
productivity and then balance okay
98
so these are the nouns we meeting work we productivity
99
and balance okay let's go on to the next dictation which is Dictation number four.
100
It looks like we need some more staff.
101
Period.
102
Roger and Leanne moved out of the city.
103
Comma.
104
And I think Peter is getting ready to retire.
105
Period.
106
I wonder what would be the best way to attract new employees.
107
Okay, here we go.
108
It looks like we need,
109
it looks like we need some more staff, some more staff, period period Roger
110
and Leanne moved out of the city Roger and Leanne moved out of the city comma
111
and I think Peter and I think Peter is getting ready to retire is getting ready to retire
112
I wonder what would
113
be the best
114
way to attract new employees.
115
attract new employees.
116
So I'll give you a moment to find the nouns and then I'll show you what I said.
117
It looks like we need some more staff period.
118
Roger and Leanne moved out of the city
119
comma
120
and I think Peter is getting ready to retire period I
121
wonder what would be the best way to attract new employees
122
so in this dictation oh you know what there's one here
123
it this is a pronoun right here this is a noun then we've got we,
124
staff, Roger, Leigh-Anne, city, I,
125
we have another pronoun here,
126
Peter, way, this is a noun, and employees.
127
So these are the nouns in this dictation.
128
And we've We've got one more dictation to go.
129
One of the, sorry, I'm gonna go a little bit slower.
130

132
and they work so well together.
133
When you get along with your co-workers,
134

135
