1
If you're struggling with speaking English, it might be because you are translating everything in your head.
2
So let me give you a test.
3
Just answer this question here.
4
What has been the best part of your day so far?
5
Okay, so when you went to answer that, did you think of your answer in your native language and then translate it to English and then speak in English?
6
Or did you think of your answer in English
7
and then speak in English? because for most learners it will be the first one
8
because that is just how you are taught.
9
However, if you want speaking to feel easier and more natural and just more enjoyable as well, then we need to change that.
10
And here's why.
11
So when you're speaking and you have to translate everything in your head, it just adds this extra mental step.
12
And that's why when people are speaking English as a second language, quite often they will have these long pauses.
13
So they'll be speaking, speaking, speaking.
14
and that's because it's during this time during these pauses
15
that they are translating in their head and I bet
16
when you are speaking your native language you don't pause anywhere
17
near as much of course some pauses are natural however it won't be to the same extent
18
and that's because you are thinking in your native language and then speaking in your native language you're not translating everything.
19
Now another problem with translating and not thinking in the language is
20
that especially in English some words or expressions just won't have direct translations.
21
So not only will you have these long pauses to worry about
22
but when you do finally manage to speak it may not sound that natural.
23
Now I'm not saying all of this to make you feel bad.
24
As mentioned when you start learning a language you have to learn by translating.
25
There is no other way okay.
26
It's just that I know it can be extremely frustrating if you've been studying for years
27
and you still don't feel 100% confident or natural when you are speaking that language.
28
To be honest with you, with listening you can get away with translating for the most part, but when it comes to speaking you need your English brain.
29
So I'm just going to show you how you can get that, how you can develop your English brain
30
and therefore how you can finally start to speak English more naturally and more confidently as well.
31
And it's actually very easy.
32
Basically, you just need to immerse yourself in English, okay?
33
You need to surround yourself in it.
34
Now, I'm not saying that you have to suddenly move to the UK in order to do this.
35
You just need to create an environment where you are regularly seeing, hearing, and using English throughout your day.
36
Okay, so the important thing here when it comes to consuming content is
37
that you need to be able to understand most of it.
38
Not all of it, but most of it.
39
So let's say that you are watching a video, right?
40
And you have to pause every 10 seconds in order to translate a word.
41
It's probably too difficult.
42
And you're better off finding a video where you don't have to constantly translate all of these words.
43
Now, let's say that you do find a word that you don't know the meaning of, okay?
44
So, for example, you're watching a video and the guy says, I'm absolutely shattered after doing all of that work last night.
45
And let's say that you don't know what this word shattered means.
46
instead of translating it, I want you to just keep watching and try to gather from the context what it could mean.
47
Okay, so let's say that this person looks tired and you know they've done all this work, so you could probably guess that the word shattered means tired.
48
Then you hear someone else say it again next week, maybe your colleague, maybe one of your friends, or maybe you're just watching something on YouTube, and then you hear it again.
49
And eventually, when you hear this word shattered, you don't think of the translation of your language.
50
Maybe you don't even need to know what it means in your language.
51
But instead you hear shattered and you just know the meaning in English.
52
You just know the feeling of this word.
53
Now, I know that sounds a bit hippie.
54
Oh, yeah, man, you just gotta feel the vibes, you know.
55
But to be honest with you, that's exactly what we want.
56
Because if you're doing this, it means that you are finding a direct connection between English
57
and the meaning of the word without having your native language in the middle, without having to keep constantly translating.
58
And that is how you build your English brain
59
and that's how you start speaking without needing to translate in your head first.
60
So that's the best way of consuming English but you are also going to have to practice using it as well.
61
And thankfully you can start doing this right away by yourself at home, right?
62
And the easiest way is just to kind of narrate what you are doing in that moment.
63
So start speaking out loud and describing what you're doing.
64
Maybe you're making a coffee.
65
You might say, okay I'm making some coffee.
66
I need some milk.
67
Where is the milk?
68
Oh, it's here.
69
Okay, now I need a mug.
70
Where are the mugs?
71
Okay.
72
Now, if you're walking somewhere, you might try to describe what you can see.
73
So maybe you want to do this when there is no one else around because you're going to be speaking out loud.
74
You can do it in your head as well.
75
But for speaking, it's best to actually speak out loud, obviously.
76
So you might be saying, Oh, wow, that's a nice tree.
77
Oh, that looks like the tree I have back in my home country.
78
Oh, wow, it's very hot today.
79
Did I put sunblock on?
80
Those are the thoughts that I have.
81
Anyway, now at first I want you to keep this very simple.
82
It doesn't have to be this crazy complicated conversation with yourself.
83
The goal is simply just to have periods of your day where you are exclusively thinking and speaking in English.
84
Now I know that might sound challenging so honestly just start small.
85
Start with just 10 minutes a day.
86
10 minutes where you are exclusively thinking in English, you are watching in English, you are listening in English, you are speaking in English,
87
then gradually I want you to make these periods of time longer.
88
Now, another important tip here is
89
when you don't know how to say something try not to immediately translate it in your head.
90
You want to keep your brain in English.
91
So let's say you don't know the word kettle for example the thing that you use to boil the water.
92
Instead of trying to find the translation instead just say something
93
like okay now I need to turn on the thing I use to boil the water so just keep it in English.
94
It really does not have to be perfect.
95
The main thing is that you are keeping your brain in English.
96
You're not translating.
97
And that means the next time that someone asks you a question like, So, what has been the best part of your day so far?
98
You can simply say in English without having to translate,
99
The best part of my day so far has been watching Dylan from British Education explain how to train my English brain.
100
That's my name, by the way.
101
I'm Dylan, if you're new here.
102
So those are the most effective ways of consuming and using English in order to develop your English learning brain.
103
Now if you are looking for the fastest
104
and easiest way to instantly build an English learning environment I'd recommend joining my private online community
105
and that's because you get eight live calls and lessons every single week covering speaking and vocabulary and accent training.
106
You get daily posts and messages and support and tips
107
and most importantly you are surrounded by a group of people who are also learning English.
108
Okay, so it's the perfect English learning environment.
109
So you can join right away.
110
There's a seven-day free trial and the link is in the top comment.
111
The trial won't last much longer, but that basically means you can try a full week in the community and you don't need to pay anything.
112
Okay, so definitely check that out.
113
And finally, if you are looking to further immerse yourself in English with my videos, I'd recommend checking out this playlist here.
114
It's a fun one.
115
All right, guys, thank you so much for watching.
116
I'll see some of you inside of the community and I'll see the rest of you in another video very soon.
117
Cheers.

  • 用「I'm absolutely shattered」代替「I'm very tired」,这种口语化短语更贴近真实交流,避免翻译腔。

现在完成进行时 have/has been + -ing — 以前开始、现在仍在继续的动作you've been studying · has been watching
现在完成时 have/has + 过去分词 — 过去发生但与现在仍有关联的事has been · they've done
被动语态 be + 过去分词 — 强调发生了什么,而不是谁做的are taught · are surrounded
最高级 the -est / the most … — 一组中最高或最低的the best · the easiest · the most effective
