hi there it's asiya you know what's interesting three times more people search for ielts speaking part one than part three however part three with longer answers
2
and more difficult topics arguably affects your score more than part one in this video let's talk about some of the more challenging or unexpected topics you may get in part three i'll show you
3
my sample answers and give you some ideas and vocabulary for your answers okay let's get started
4
the first topic is robots
5
do you think certain jobs done by humans will be replaced by robots in the future
6
i think many of the jobs we do today will be done by robots and it's only a matter of time before it happens repetitive manual jobs will be the first to go as technology develops more jobs will follow
7
in part 3 examiners encourage you to give quite long extended answers and they ask you questions based on what you say in your answers they aren't reading them from the list like in part one let's
8
have a look at some vocabulary first of all when you're talking about robots it's common to compare them to humans to highlight this difference between us and them but you can also use the word
9
people it's only a matter of time or it's just a matter of time before something happens
10
this is a common idiom used to say that something will definitely happen but you're not sure when
11
if a job is repetitive it means that someone repeats the same operation over and over and menu means done by hand or involving physical strength
12
the next question is is it a good thing that robots will do certain jobs instead of humans
13
in this question the examiner asks for your opinion is it a good thing or is it a bad thing
14
unlike ielts writing where your position must be very clear in speaking it's quite natural to take a position that is not too extreme there are pros and cons on the one hand robots cannot place
15
people working in hazardous environments for example with chemicals or explosives
16
they can also relieve people from physically exhausting and down jobs on the other hand those who lose their jobs to robots will need to be retrained with new skills in order to be able
17
to find other jobs when you take a position in the middle you can talk about both sides positives and negatives which means that it's easier to find ideas and you can refer to them as pros and cons
18
the whole phrase there are pros and cons is quite common to present both sides you can use on the one hand and on the other hand we use these linkers in ielts writing but they're great
19
for ielts speaking too the next question is are there any jobs that cannot be replaced by robots
20
if you get this question you could talk about two areas creativity and emotions here's my answer
21
i believe that robots can't do any sort of creative work like making movies writing ads or filming educational videos they're also not very good at understanding or responding
22
to human emotions so jobs that require any sort of negotiations such as evantagonizing or pr are safe
23
however a lot of other jobs are more susceptible to automation to be good at is to do something very well and in english it's common to say that someone is not very good at doing something
24
and don't forget to add ing to your verb to be good at playing tennis robots are not very good at understanding emotions to be susceptible is likely to be influenced or affected by something
25
he's susceptible to stress it means he can't handle stressful situations well or these jobs are susceptible to automation which means they will be lost to robots the next topic is self-driving
26
cars or cars that don't require driver so many companies are working on them today that it was only a matter of time before this topic appeared in the ielts exams you can refer to these cars
27
as self-driving driverless meaning without a driver or autonomous the first question is
28
do you think in the future all cars will be autonomous and will not need a driver
29
if the examiner thinks that you may not know a certain word or may not understand it straight away they may explain it to you just like i did in this question however if they don't in part three
30
you can ask what a certain word means or you can ask to paraphrase the whole question here is my answer eventually all cars will be driverless but i don't believe it's going to happen anytime soon
31
today a number of companies are testing safe driving cars and those cars are not yet able to handle all situations correctly actually some of them have gotten into accidents despite having
32
test drivers behind the wheel that's why it's more likely that in the near future i will see more driver assist functions such as emergency braking but not a full self-driving mode yet
33
let's have a look at the verb tenses in the first sentence all cars will be autonomous this is my forecast or my prediction so i use the future simple tense and i don't know the exact date
34
however in the second part i'm talking about the time that is coming soon
35
and it's not going to happen anytime soon so this is a plan so i have to use to be going to phrase
36
and not the future simple actually you can use this linker to add something surprising
37
actually i quite enjoyed the party it means you expected to have terrible time but you were wrong so don't say that to the host you can also use it to politely disagree with the examiner
38
do you often read newspapers actually i prefer to get my news online this is why is a linker we commonly use using speaking instead of the more formal their form next are there any advantages
39
of having a self-driving car over a regular car well the main advantage is that these cars should eliminate human errors most accidents today happen because at least one of the drivers is at
40
fault and robots won't be susceptible to speeding or drink driving another advantage is that anyone will be able to use autonomous cars including younger and older people who don't drive human
41
errors are mistakes done by humans for example if someone gets distracted or makes a wrong decision
42
so robots don't make human errors and when someone is at fault they are responsible for something bad
43
a driver is at fault do you remember what to be susceptible means it means to be likely to be affected speeding is driving too fast and drink driving is driving after drinking alcohol
44
in the uk it's called drink driving and in the u.s it's drunk driving
45
are there any problems that could be associated with driverless cars
46
i can see quite a few first of all there is a danger that the computer malfunctions or is hacked and the car could get into an accident and because many people may be wary of riding
47
in a car they can't control i'm not sure how quickly driverless cars may become mainstream
48
another point is the price all the technology required for autonomous driving will likely make these cars much more expensive than regular cars thus limiting the number of people who can afford
49
to buy them quite a few actually means a lot more than enough first of all and another point is are the two linkers are used to introduce their problems ielts examiners check if you link ideas
50
together so you should definitely use some linking words in your answers but avoid using firstly or first secondly and so on they sound too formal instead say first of all or another problem is the
51
next topic is fake news these are false reports of events that are usually spread on the internet
52
so let's talk about the word news is it singular or plural news is or news are well news is the
53
noun news is singular and uncountable just like water or snow if you want to refer to a particular story say a piece of news the question is has the way we get our news changed in the last 20 years
54
absolutely in the past people used to get their news from printed newspapers radio tv we still watch tv today but newspapers and radio are much less popular instead a lot of
55
people read news online either on news websites or on social media when you want to agree with the question you can say yes it has but it's also very common to say absolutely or definitely
56
used to get their news used to means that something was true in the past but it's not true anymore i used to play tennis means i don't play anymore next do you think that everything we read
57
online is true you may be asked about things you read online or in the newspapers and your examiner may not necessarily use the words fake news but that's what the question is about my answer is
58
definitely not you can use definitely to agree and definitely not to disagree it really depends on the source of news all the major news agencies or tv channels have websites where they publish news
59
and those are as reliable as we can get however a lot of news spread via unknown websites or social media is completely fake as reliable as we can get so this means that there are no other news sources
60
that we can trust more and this is a great expression because you can change it to
61
to your situation for example how's your health as good as it gets it means that i never feel myself better these days or this flat is as quiet as you can get in central london
62
and just to remind you that news is a lot of these news is fake next how can someone determine if a piece of news is fake or not it's important to check the source of the news and look for articles
63
published by large newspapers or official sources such as government websites of course we know that some governments and media channels spread misinformation but generally speaking such
64
sources are more reliable than posts and pictures shared on social media
65
if you are talking about news that are not true you can say that someone spreads misinformation
66
generally speaking means that what you say is generally true or in most cases it's true generally speaking the more you pay the more you get as i mentioned
67
part 3 is a discussion and your examiner asks you questions based on your answers
68
they have topics but not precise questions however in parts 1 and 2 examiners give you questions from their database and i've made a pdf list of questions reported in ielts speaking
69
and writing recently and you can download it on our telegram channel i'll leave the link below and thank you so much for watching me today good luck with your preparation and your exam bye
