1
They say you can learn new things at any time if you're willing to be a beginner.
2
And I agree.
3
It makes you brave, keeps you young, keeps your brain elastic.
4
There's numerous studies that show that those who embrace new experiences tend to have greater resilience and good emotional well -being.
5
Except what they don't tell you is that being a beginner can also be the most embarrassing thing of your life.
6
Hello!
7
Okay, I've been back and forth on this idea for a while now, and I think it has come to the point where I just have to commit to it.
8
So there is this one thing that I've always wanted to do, and it is to learn a language.
9
But not just any language, but my family's language.
10
You see, my parents immigrated to Canada from the Philippines in the 90s.
11
And I grew up here like any other North American kid.
12
Iconic.
13
Born here, went to school here, asked for ham sandwiches for lunch, and as a kid, I had no patience nor interest in learning to speak the language.
14
Wait, this is an iconic photo.
15
It's my Lola, my mom, and my tita literally getting off the plane in Canada for the first time.
16
end up learning the language.
17
Either way, I didn't.
18
And it really wasn't even a big deal to me until I got out of school.
19
I started traveling, seeing the world, and I think that's why you start questioning your identity a little bit more.
20
My frontal love was developing.
21
That being paired with feeling completely useless
22
when someone tries to speak to you in the language and you have no idea what to say back.
23
Top 5 worst feelings.
24
Honestly, if you know, you know.
25
But if there's a time to do it, It is now.
26
But wanting to learn a language is very different from actually learning a language.
27
Filipino is a category three language meaning it's significantly different from English.
28
Category three, bro.
29
Thank you.
30
Thank you.
31
I'm literally screwed.
32
I'm actually...
33
concerned right now like
34
when I say I am I'm a beginner like I sometimes
35
I feel like I speak 0 .7 language like sometimes I
36
can barely speak English some days like it is embarrassing how little I know
37
and then most of the videos
38
that I have watched of people learning this fast they already have some sort of background in languages
39
or maybe they know another language or maybe they even understand it but for me I don't even understand it as much.
40
I know keywords, but that's it.
41
Let me give you some context as to where I'm starting out.
42
Things I do know.
43
Counting to 10, the alphabet only up to letter H, most foods, just the dishes, not the actual ingredients, few swear words, and when I'm getting in trouble.
44
I'm not proud.
45
It's not that I don't hear the language either.
46
I hear it pretty much every day of my life.
47
We'd be at the dinner table and my family would talk to each other in Filipino and talk to me in English.
48
And it's pretty much been like that my entire life.
49
And same with my cousins, okay?
50
None of us speak the language.
51
We're all basically cooked.
52
But I've always been curious if I just really commit, how much can I actually learn Within a week.
53
How far can I take it?
54
Is it even possible?
55
We are literally almost at the end here I've been avoiding this for last.
56
Well almost last so in other words I'm starting from ground zero.
57
So here's this Buhay means alive.
58
Life.
59
Buhay!
60
means life, buhay, means alive, I thought Bahai means like...
61
how?
62
Isbahai.
63
It's gonna be a long week.
64
It's day one officially.
65
According to all the videos that I've watched, I should start with learning the most popular 1000 words.
66
So we'll go from there.
67
So after scouring the internet, I decided to loosely base my plan off of this framework.
68
Phase one would be learning the top 1000 words based off
69
of the 80 /20 rule to get me familiar with the vocabulary.
70
Phase two will be learning sentence structure, tenses, and going full immersion with music and shows.
71
And at the end of the week, I'll be tested in conversation by my very own mother.
72
I know
73
that there's no way I could become fluent in such a short amount of time based on where I'm starting out
74
but my goal is to at least be conversational.
75
Enough to get by.
76
Okay.
77
Okay, so maybe I do know just really really really really basic words.
78
I went through my first flash card set, 22 words.
79
And honestly, I knew most of these, you know?
80
If I didn't know exact translation, I've at least heard the word before.
81
Also, this is just the first 22 words I've heard, so...
82
I have a hunch that there is another reason why I never learned any language, and that is because I am painfully shy.
83
I never was a kid who liked popcorn reading or giving presentations, and that has not changed much at all.
84
So even the thought of talking out loud in another language
85
is a whole other thing I know I'll eventually have to get over if I want to see this through.
86
I thought this would be the easiest part but it's so long.
87
I actually know more words than I thought, which is, Quite reassuring, but it's frustrating because I wanna start using the vocabulary, but I only know the word for things
88
but i don't know how to formulate a full thought yet i honestly can't wait to get to that part
89
and i just want to be done i just want to
90
be done the vocabulary i am around 800 words in i have two 200 more to go oh my god
91
so i am just gonna try to beast it so i can move on to the next
92
I'm at a loss for words, loss for words, loss for words.
93
I got nothing to say anymore.
94
I'm at a loss for words, loss for words.
95
I got nothing to say anymore.
96
I'm at a loss for words, loss for words.
97
I got nothing to say anymore.
98
I'm at a loss for words, loss for words.
99
I got nothing to say anymore.
100
I'm at a loss for words, loss for words.
101
I got nothing to say anymore.
102
I got nothing to say anymore.
103
I got nothing to say anymore.
104
I'm had a loss for you .
105
Maganda umaga bayan!
106
Today is the day that we finally get into conjugations.
107
I have been wanting to get to this point for the past three days And now we're here.
108
So we are entering the second phase.
109
So now that I know the words for certain things, now it is time to learn the in between words that I can string my thoughts together.
110
It is time.
111
So I quickly found out that I am indeed not a textbook person.
112
They'd probably be better for long -term study, but I ended up finding some videos online that were way easier to understand the basics.
113
Shout out to Tagalog Time with Pat,
114
she was holding it down. which was extremely helpful.
115
Learning a language is such an emotional rollercoaster.
116
One minute I think I'm doing good and the next feels like,
117
"What the heck?" Okay, I'm learning and my head hurts. But we're getting there.
118
For the next couple of days I continued on while also starting to say things out loud.
119
Okay, this is a text message I sent to my mom.
120
I was working on my work.
121
I ate spaghetti.
122
Para tangalihan.
123
Accent is so cooked.
124
But that was from memory.
125
Okay, that was from memory.
126
and my favorite which was immersing myself more in the language.
127
So I found this playlist.
128
Literally, it's called Filipino songs to scream to and honestly straight up bangers on this.
129
I feel like it's good to find songs you want to belt out to, but you will not be hearing me sing in this video.
130
I did not get that gene.
131
yummy yummy Growing up in North America,
132
I think everyone's relationship to their culture is a little different.
133
I'm going to go ahead and put it in the middle.
134
I never felt removed enough to entirely question my background.
135
But I also had my fair share of moments I felt inadequate to.
136
My culture was a big part of my life growing up, especially through food and family and traditions.
137
But when people ask me where I'm from, or meeting someone so naturally in tune, that's usually when I feel the distance the most.
138
I can understand parts of it, but never all of it.
139
It's such a nuanced thing.
140
Some people grow up fully fluent, some don't, some people feel a strong gap, some barely feel it at all.
141
And I feel like I'm sitting somewhere in the middle.
142
Moments of disconnect never felt super obvious or dramatic.
143
It's more like not fully knowing what I'm missing.
144
But I know there's some things that I don't have access to, and layers to this I don't quite have the words for.
145
But I guess it doesn't always have to be like that either.
146
Good morning, people.
147
My final test.
148
is tomorrow and honestly i think we can do good we can we can salvage this
149
seeing as though this was my last day to study i
150
had to put all my reservations behind me no matter
151
if i previously felt shy to practice speaking out loud the plan was just to focus
152
and review what i already did know up until that point and hope for the best
153
Oh, the color test.
154
OMG.
155
Today I'm going to ask my mom to test me and we can see my knowledge until now.
156
I'm impressed with how much I've learned.
157
However, I am shy to literally showcase it to all of you
158
because what's impressive to me may not be impressive to you.
159
I studied until pretty late last night.
160
I also recorded myself saying these phrases.
161
So let's see how much I've with more confidence.
162
I hope for the best.
163
I told her to have some questions to ask me.
164
So we'll see what I can do.
165
We'll see.
166
I have my notes in front of me just in case, but I am going to try my best to not look at my notes at all.
167
Don't believe it.
168
Come on, stag on.
169
- I'm going to put my mouth on the phone.
170
- I'm going to put my mouth on the phone.
171
So in this moment, I unlocked a whole new kind of exposure therapy trying to converse with someone.
172
It took us a while, but we eventually...
173
locked in.
174
How's your day?
175
Okay.
176
I'm at 10 :00 a .m.
177
at the day.
178
Don't tell me.
179
I'm eating a meal for dinner.
180
That's a tank of history.
181
Yeah.
182
Then I'm working at the office and I'm studying Tagalog.
183
Ooh!
184
How is that good?
185
I'm like going through my memory like, "Oh my god, what are these words?" from most of it.
186
Even though my replies were pretty rough, the more I was speaking, the less I felt intimidated.
187
Just a little bit.
188
I like this.
189
I like this.
190
Obviously, so far from being perfect.
191
What's your favorite Filipino food?
192
Cinegan.
193
Wow.
194
Salmon.
195
I don't know how to say salmon. But...
196
Also, Kind of getting it.
197
We went to Aria, to our house.
198
We went to a scene.
199
Aww.
200
Ultimately, I think once you actually break the ice and are okay with sounding bad and making mistakes, Learning a language, especially your families,
201
actually becomes kind of fun.
202
You're tired.
203
My tired.
204
My tired.
205
My heart hurts.
206
I'm tired.
207
Well, that was fun.
208
Honestly, I'm just so surprised and I'm really happy with my progress.
209
I know that it is far from perfect, literally so far from perfect.
210
However...
211
This is the most Tagalog I have I've ever known in my entire life, literally entire life.
212
So, It's still a big deal to me.
213
It is a massive, massive step up from what I started like a week ago with.
214
So I feel like it was such a nice way for me to like bond with my family over.
215
And once they knew that I was super serious about it, then they were 100 % supportive.
216
So I'm not a bilingual queen just yet.
217
But one day, but one day.
218
Hope you guys enjoyed seeing that.
219
I know it was painful a little bit probably if you know the language.
220
Accent, real bad, but it's fine.
221
Salamat po for watching.
222
Oh gosh.
223
Must say uncle.
224
road to take?
225
Who told you that it was too late?
226
Mmm.

关于本课
您正在使用跟读技巧通过视频"Learning A Language In My 20s 🇵🇭"练习英语口语和发音。
