1
Hi friends, welcome back to English Every Day, a podcast where I speak in slow,
2
easy, and understandable English so that you can learn every day.
3
Because if you want to learn English, you have to keep going, don't stop.
4
Keep going, don't stop.
5
Today, we are talking about what the world was like before the internet.
6
What did people do when they did not have phones?
7
Believe Believe it or not, 20 or 30 years ago, we didn't have these things.
8
We did not have smartphones.
9
Smile.
10
We did not have smartphones, so people did things differently.
11
They did different things.
12
They could not spend the whole day on TikTok or Instagram or Snapchat or whatever.
13
They had to do different things.
14
Tell me in the comments, did you live when there were no smartphones?
15
When you had to go outside and play with your friends?
16
You couldn't spend the whole day on your phone.
17
Tell me what that was like.
18
What do you remember from those days?
19
And if you have always had a phone,
20
if your whole life you have had a phone or an iPad or an iPod or something,
21
do you like using these devices, meaning these iPhones, these iPads, phones, laptops, whatever?
22
Do you like them?
23
And how much time do you spend on them every day?
24
I was born in 2004.
25
I was born in 2004, which means I'm Gen Z.
26
I'm from Generation Z.
27
I'm Gen Z.
28
And there are a lot of people in my generation that are addicted to their phones.
29
And to be honest, I also am kind of addicted to my phone.
30
I think I spend too much time on technology.
31
I could be outside hanging out with friends or at the gym or something.
32
But sometimes I spend too much time on technology.
33
And it's better now.
34
I mostly use my phone to learn languages
35
and speak with friends chat with my friends
36
so I don't spend a lot of time on social media
37
and as a kid I got my first phone
38
when I was 13
39
so for the first 13 years of my life I did
40
not have a phone I did have an iPod though an ipod touch that's the name an ipod touch
41
and man was it awesome i had
42
so many games on my ipod i even had instagram from
43
the time i was like 10 i had instagram as a 10 year old this is
44
when instagram first started so it was completely different so yeah i did not have a phone
45
but i had an ipod and my brother had an ipad we played roblox club penguin pop tropica
46
some other games that i don't remember the names of let me know
47
if you guys know these games and if you have ever played them
48
because i love these games i adore these games i really adore them
49
they were such an important part of my childhood I had my iPod
50
but I also had a limit
51
so I could only spend a few hours a week on my iPod which meant
52
that most of the time I wasn't on my iPod I
53
was outside hanging out with friends we played a lot of games let me know
54
if you know these games so hide-and-seek of Of course, tag.
55
Tag is where somebody is it, and you tag them, and you say you're it.
56
And then you run away from them.
57
That person tags someone else, and they're it.
58
You're it, you're it, you're it.
59
That's tag.
60
We also played Roundup.
61
Roundup is a game where one person is it, and then when they tag someone else, they're both it.
62
And when someone else gets tagged or touched, they're also it.
63
So if you're touched, you become it.
64
And the game ends when there is nobody left or when there is one person left.
65
And of course we played cops and robbers.
66
Cops and robbers are where there are police officers and there are bad guys, there are criminals and the good guys,
67
the police officers, the cops have to catch the bad guys, the robbers.
68
A bunch of games like that we used to play as kids.
69
As a kid, I played a lot of baseball and football and some basketball, but not so much.
70
But looking back on those times, that means thinking about those times,
71
there were so many fun stories and so many funny memories.
72
I don't know if you know what this is, but we have something called ding dong ditch.
73
To ding dong ditch someone is to go to their house and press the doorbell or knock on their door.
74
So when you press the doorbell, it makes a sound ding dong and ditch means to run away.
75
so to ding dong ditch someone is to press their doorbell
76
and ditch them run away it's a little joke that kids do
77
and as a kid I used to do it
78
and it's I guess it's annoying but being kids it's it's funny right
79
and then sometimes the neighbors would say oh we're calling the police on you
80
and then you'd have to run away or hop on your bike, get on your bike and ride away, get out of there as fast as possible.
81
But they were joking, the neighbors.
82
They were not going to call the police.
83
They just did not want to be bothered, meaning they did not want someone to disturb them or interrupt them.
84
And, well, we were pretty annoying as kids.
85
So I do not blame them.
86
I have always lived with the internet in my life, meaning that since I was a kid, I could go on the internet,
87
but it was not as big as it is now, especially with social media.
88
So as a kid, we used to just have fun, go outside, hang out with friends.
89
And I think it's important to hold on to those memories,
90
to remember those memories, because that is who we are as humans.
91
We are not the people that scroll for 20 hours a week,
92
seeing all of these crazy posts and unbelievable things.
93
We are not meant to be desensitized.
94
Whoa, big word.
95
What does that mean?
96
Desensitized means you see something so often that it becomes normal.
97
It's not a shock anymore.
98
You become desensitized.
99
And we are not meant to be desensitized to all of the things that we are desensitized to.
100
So the internet is not going anywhere and I think
101
that is a good thing because I really love the internet especially YouTube right now.
102
My job is literally through the internet and it's with people from all over the world which is crazy.
103
So I love the internet.
104
It's not going anywhere.
105
It will stay, but it's important to balance.
106
Balance your real life, hanging out with your friends and family and going outside and fooling around or messing around,
107
just having fun.
108
And the internet.
109
So with your internet friends, learning English learning new skills and all of those things
110
so remember tell me about what your life was like growing

  • “Believe it or not”:用于引出令人惊讶的事实,如“Believe it or not, 20 or 30 years ago, we didn't have these things.”,可直接用于口语中增强表达力。
  • 过去完成时的简化表达:如“I did have an iPod though”,通过“did + 动词原形”强调过去的实际情况,适合在对话中突出重点信息。
  • “kind of”:表示“有点”,用于弱化语气,如“I also am kind of addicted to my phone”,让表达更符合日常口语习惯。
  • “man was it awesome”:口语中常用的倒装结构,用于加强感叹语气,可替换为“how awesome it was”,提升对话的生动性。

常见发音陷阱

视频中部分单词的发音需要注意:

  • “addicted”:重音在第二个音节,容易误读为“addict-ed”,正确发音为/əˈdɪktɪd/,需注意元音的弱化。
  • “iPod”:发音为/ˈaɪpɒd/,注意“o”的短音发音,避免与“iPad”(/ˈaɪpæd/)混淆。
