1
Today, we're going to run through an OET speaking practice test.
2
First, I'll give you an overview.
3
Then, we'll practice some preparation techniques, and finally, I'll show you a high -scoring sample roleplay.
4
Let's jump straight in, starting with an overview of the speaking test.
5
The OET Speaking Test is made up of two role -play conversations between you and an expert who OET calls the interlocutor.
6
You play the role of a health professional
7
and the interlocutor plays the role of a patient or carer in both role plays.
8
First, there is the warm -up phase.
9
It lasts for two to three minutes.
10
You'll be asked questions about your professional background, such as where you did your training, your why you chose your profession,
11
and how long you have been working in healthcare.
12
The warm -up is not graded by the interlocutor.
13
Instead, use this phase as an opportunity to settle down and ease into your conversation.
14
At the end of the warm -up, the interlocutor will then hand you the roleplay card.
15
This signals the beginning of the preparation phase.
16
In the preparation phase, you're given three minutes to analyze the roleplay card and make any notes you find useful.
17
The roleplay card that you'll be given will look like this.
18
The roleplay card contains details about the setting, such as where you work, for example, in a hospital or clinic,
19
and your role, such as a nurse, doctor or dentist.
20
It also describes the context of the conversation, such as: you are speaking to a patient who is concerned about their medication.
21
The main body of the roleplay card is a list of four
22
or five tasks that you need to cover during the conversation.
23
These tasks guide the flow of your interaction and focus on different aspects of communication.
24
Each task is designed to assess a specific skill such as your ability to gather information,
25
provide advice, offer reassurance, or explain a procedure.
26
The three minutes will go quickly, so use this time effectively.
27
To help you with that, I'll show you how to carefully and systematically analyze a roleplay card
28
and break down the requirements of each of the bullet point tasks.
29
Get ready with a pen and paper to make a few notes.
30
So let's look at the roleplay card again.
31
On the left hand side you'll see three headings: the setting, your role, and tasks.
32
Start with the setting.
33
Stop and think about it for a moment.
34
The setting is important because it shapes how you communicate and what style of language you should use.
35
For example, you should use more formal language in a hospital, but for a home visit, your tone can be warmer, more relaxed, and conversational.
36
In this scenario, the setting is a local medical clinic, so the tone you should use can be a bit more informal but professional.
37
Let's take some notes.
38
Write down: setting, clinic, semi -formal tone.
39
Next, let's focus on the role.
40
This roleplay card, for example, tells us that you are a doctor having a consultation with a patient.
41
This gives you important information about the subject of the conversation.
42
Here, the patient had a mild heart attack and is at your clinic because he is concerned about doing physical activity.
43
So we now know much of the conversation is likely to be about recovery management and exercise.
44
Let's add this to our notes and jot down: Scenario: 45 year old patient mild heart attack,
45
good recovery, Concerns regarding physical activity.
46
Learning how to read and analyze the roleplay card teaches you how to anticipate the subject of your conversation with the interlocutor.
47
This becomes even more apparent when we take a closer look at the bullet point tasks.
48
Here's our list of tasks again.
49
Each task is a prompt that gives you a clear step or point you should cover during the role play.
50
The tasks help you move through the conversation logically.
51
like a checklist to make sure you don't miss anything important.
52
In the preparation time you have, it might feel like there's a lot to absorb quickly.
53
But don't let yourself get bogged down.
54
Rather than focusing on detail, I'll give you a helpful tip.
55
Focus on what each task is asking you to do.
56
The bullet points you'll be given will follow a pattern that aligns with the task type.
57
These task types will require you to: gather information about the patient, gather information about their symptoms or condition,
58
provide reassurance or emotional support, explain something, often a condition or procedure to the patient,
59
and advise the patient about something relating to their condition.
60
The order of these tasks will shift around a bit between roleplay cards, but the same task types will appear on most roleplay cards.
61
Let's quickly go through the five tasks on our sample card and I'll show you what I mean.
62
Starting with the first task, it says, "Find out the reason for the patient's visit." Okay, what type of task is this?
63
It's a gather information task.
64
You'll need to ask the patient who they are and why they are there.
65
I'll jot this down as a note.
66
Bullet point one: gather information about patient.
67
Why did they make the appointment?
68
Even though we already know the answer because we've scanned the task card, you need to ask it anyway.
69
They may provide some new information not on the task card that will help guide your response from there.
70
Okay, let's look at bullet point number two now.
71
This bullet point is interesting.
72
It combines two tasks in one.
73
That does not appear very often, but it can pop up from time to time, so you need to be aware.
74
Here, the first part of the task says: Reassure the patient about fatigue.
75
but then we also see Explain recovery and importance of exercise.
76
So, it's both a reassure and explain something task type.
77
I'll jot this down as a note: bullet point two: reassure, fatigue, Be sympathetic.
78
Explain exercise is important.
79
Things you might talk about in your conversation is why fatigue is normal and how exercise will help resolve that over time.
80
but you'll need to extend your responses.
81
Let's now look at the third bullet point.
82
The third bullet point refers to giving recommendations and advice about exercise, rehab, and exploring their job.
83
This task is interesting too.
84
It looks like multiple tasks, but really, it's just one.
85
Giving recommendations and advice are basically the same thing.
86
I'll make a quick note of that.
87
Bullet point three.
88
Give advice about exercise and rehab.
89
Inquire about work.
90
Turning now to the fourth bullet point, it mentions giving a time skill to the patient about returning to work.
91
This task type is like explaining a procedure or process involving a series of steps or sequence of events in this case,
92
being emotionally and physically ready.
93
So I'll jot down bullet point four, explain recovery process, physical, emotional readiness for return to work.
94
Finally, role plays often end with a bullet point requiring you to give advice to the patient.
95
In this roleplay card, we can see that's also the case.
96
I'll jot down bullet point five, advice on prevention, i .e diet, lifestyle, etc. As you can see,
97
our notes are a highly simplified version of the roleplay card.
98
If you've made good notes, you'll find it much easier to follow the tasks laid out in your notes rather than trying to read the card.
99

101
Soon, we'll look at a new roleplay card.
102
I want you to pause the video and practice the preparation phase of the roleplay.
103
analyze the roleplay card just as I showed you and make notes of the key pieces of information on the card.
104
You'll have 10 seconds to pause the video, then we'll review the preparation notes.
105
After that, we'll look at a sample role play.
106
Okay, here's your roleplay card.
107
Pause the video and prepare your notes now.
108
Okay, how did you go?
109
Let's compare your notes with a sample.
110
Here it is.
111
Starting with the setting, let's write down "setting" - doctor's office.
112
Next, here are the notes of the scenario.
113
Scenario, 31 -year -old patient Acne flare -ups embarrassed.
114
Now turning to the bullet points, the first is: Bullet point one: gather information about symptoms.
115
Beginning.
116
frequency, Now for bullet point two.
117
Bullet point two: gather information about possible causes, lifestyle, diet, skin care bullet point three.
118
explain no link between dairy and condition.
119
washing, squeezing.
120
Bullet point four.
121
Reassure, not uncommon.
122
Ask about treatments tried.
123
Finally, Bullet point five.
124
Explain topical ointment and advise /recommend referral to a dermatologist long -term treatment.
125
Now that we have a complete set of notes, I'll share a sample roleplay with you.
126
Keep an eye on the notes to follow the flow of the roleplay.
127
Let's watch now.
128
Good afternoon, Lauren.
129
My name is Dr. Merchant.
130
I'll be the doctor taking care of you today.
131
Can you tell me what brings you in?
132
Oh hello doctor.
133
Thanks for seeing me.
134
Well, I thought I should come.
135
Well, it's a bit embarrassing actually.
136
It's my skin.
137
I've come to see you because I have this terrible acne on my face.
138
It seems to be getting worse I think and I just don't know how to fix it.
139
So I've come to see you for some help.
140
I'm really sorry to hear about your acne.
141
Well, let's try to get to the bottom of it today.
142
Okay.
143
Can you tell me a little bit more about when this all started?
144
I think it was about three and a half months ago I first noticed it coming up.
145
Yeah.
146
So three and a half months ago.
147
Okay.
148
Have you noticed the rush coming and going or has it always been there?
149
No, it seems to come and go and kind of breakouts about once a month, once every three weeks.
150
Then it takes about three or four days to go down.
151
It's just so embarrassing, doctor.
152
I can't tell you.
153
I'm so fed up with it.
154
I can tell that you're struggling with it.
155
Hopefully we can help you out today.
156
Can you tell me any other symptoms that you are having in association with the rash?
157
Well, they're just these red, small red spots that come up under the skin.
158
Sometimes they blow up into very large boils, and I do try and squeeze them to make them go away and they're now coming down my back as well.
159
So sometimes they're quite painful.
160
Okay, and have you tried anything that makes it feel better?
161
Well, I've tried so many creams from the pharmacy, but nothing seems to work.
162
I even went to see a naturopath and was given some vitamins, but they haven't worked.
163
I just really need something fast acting now to fix it.
164
Okay, have you noticed anything that makes it worse, such as any soaps or detergents you might be using?
165
Well, I've been cleaning my skin even more often than usual, like three times, four times a day, to get rid of any bacteria, but it's making it worse, if anything.
166
And have you had any changes in your diet or anything that you think that might have caused your skin rash?
167
I can't think of anything.
168
Lately, my diet's been the same.
169
I eat quite healthily, but I do enjoy a lot of dairy food, and my friend told me that could be making it worse.
170
Do you think that's true?
171
No, there's no clear evidence or proven link between eating dairy and causing acne.
172
And I also heard that you mentioned that you've been squeezing it to make it go away.
173
I would avoid doing that for a couple of reasons.
174
One is that it can cause scarring, and the other one is that it might make it worse by potentially spreading bacteria to other areas of your skin.
175
I didn't realize that.
176
In your opinion, what do you think might be the cause of this reaction?
177
Do you know what?
178
I just can't work it out.
179
I just don't know.
180
I think my friend had a problem like this and she was given some tablets and that fixed it up.
181
So I'm hoping you could give me some strong medication today.
182
Well, I am so sorry that it is so uncomfortable.
183
This isn't an uncommon condition, and there are a few things we can do today to help you with that.
184
I will prescribe some medication today.
185
But I also think it's also important to be realistic about the treatment.
186
It may take some time before you know what treatment works best and for your skin to get a little bit better.
187
Okay, so you're telling me that we won't solve the problem today?
188
We'll get you started on the path to recovering.
189
I can provide a fairly strong topical cream for you for the short term.
190
And I will also refer you to a dermatologist for further care as well.
191
What's a dermatologist?
192
A dermatologist is another physician, kind of like myself, but they're specialized in taking care of skin -related issues.
193
So that's all they focus on.
194
they will be able to give you a long -term treatment and find the root of the problem for you
195
It is important that you know that this condition is not uncommon, so don't worry.
196
The dermatologist is an expert in identifying potential causes and working out the best treatments.
197
All right, well, that sounds like a plan.
198
I'm happy to see someone else as long as I can get on top of it.
199
"You know, I don't even go out anymore.
200
I've cancelled all my social engagements because it's got so bad it's affecting my mental health."
201
I can see how that will be, you know, very very difficult for you to go out.
202
hopefully the treatment with the topical cream and referring you to a dermatologist can help ease that for you.
203
Okay, thank you doctor.
204
I appreciate your help.
205
You're very welcome.
206
Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you with today.
207
So, how was that?
208
Were you able to see how our notes lined up nicely with the sequence of the roleplay?
209
Let's do a quick review why this roleplay was a successful one for the candidate.
210
The candidate did a nice job introducing themselves to the interlocutor.
211
a nice way to get the conversation started.
212
Their tone is consistent with them being in a medical clinic as it is semi -formal, friendly and empathetic.
213
So, that's it for today's OET Speaking Practice Test.
