1
Every single time somebody watches one of your YouTube videos, they decide.
2
Keep watching or watch something else.
3
And the difference isn't in how good your ideas are, it's in how well you can make them click in your viewer's brain.
4
Because if your point takes too much effort to understand, your viewer will leave before it even lands.
5
So in this video, I want to show you the five mistakes
6
that are preventing your ideas from landing and how to make them click instantly.
7
If you fix these five mistakes, you'll pass what I call the click test.
8
Your idea hasn't clicked if your viewer vaguely understands it.
9
It has clicked if they can repeat it to somebody else.
10
Making it click is what keeps your viewers watching, coming back, trusting you and ultimately buying from you.
11
It's the exact method that I've used in my highest performing videos
12
that have generated hundreds of thousands of views and multi-six figures in sales.
13
And if you follow the method in this video, your ideas will become so strong that they can even be used in the packaging that makes your videos blow up.
14
The first mistake is called the scattered point.
15
There's nothing that makes viewers want to click off more than scattered information.
16
So imagine these little magnets right here are your thoughts surrounding your point.
17
You've got maybe an example, a caveat, a philosophy, some extra context that you wanted to add, and maybe a couple of tangents just for fun.
18
They might all be useful, but there's nothing pulling them into a coherent structure.
19
What you need is this.
20
This large magnet is your core, and it's one sentence that captures the essence of the essential point.
21
And look what it does to all of your thoughts.
22
Look at that.
23
It stacks them neatly into a structured coherent point.
24
Once you have that core one sentence, your introduction sets it up, your example supports it, your explanation deepens it, and your conclusion lands it.
25
So when you're planning your point, ask yourself, what is the one idea that I want my viewer to be able to repeat?
26
An example of this is one of my highest performing videos on this channel.
27
And one of the points in the video was about your tone of voice on camera and how to have a good, welcoming, warm tone of voice.
28
The problem is tone of voice is quite an abstract thing and I had a ton of different thoughts about it.
29
But when I applied this rule, I condensed that essential idea into one sentence.
30
Speak to the camera as if you're speaking to your best friend in a coffee shop.
31
Once I had that as the core of my point, everything else clicked.
32
So remember, if you can't say the point in one sentence, you haven't found the point yet.
33
Mistake number two is the unplugged point.
34
And even if you have your core essential sentence, if you're making this next mistake, you are sabotaging your views, watch time, and sales guaranteed.
35
So you might have been asking, Thomas, why is there a lamp back there?
36
And why isn't it turned on?
37
Let me explain.
38
So imagine a lamp sitting at a desk.
39
It's a beautiful lamp, it's got great form, great function, it has a working bulb, the wiring is fine, everything is where it needs to be.
40
But there's a big problem.
41
It's not plugged in, so nothing happens.
42
And that's what an unplugged point is.
43
The information might be clear, the advice might be good, the idea may even be valuable, but if it's not connected to something that your viewer cares about, it has no power, it has no energy.
44
Your point is the lamp.
45
Their desire is the power source.
46
link the two and your idea lights up.
47
So for every single major point in your video, ask why should my viewer care about this?
48
And then link it to either their pain or their desire.
49
Mistake number three is the blind point.
50
And if you commit this, you will ensure that your viewers never get what you're saying.
51
And if you fix this, you will dominate your niche by being the only person that actually gets your viewers to think, oh, I finally get it.
52
So let's just do a quick test here.
53
Picture compound interest.
54
All right, what came into your brain?
55
It might have been graphs, it might have been money, it might have been absolutely nothing.
56
It was probably different for everyone.
57
Now picture a snowball.
58
I can almost guarantee you everyone watching this video pictured the same thing.
59
A snowball.
60
Now just entertain this for a second.
61
Imagine you're a 10-year-old and I'm going to read you this sentence.
62
Compound interest is the process of earning returns and your original investment on the accumulative returns from previous periods.
63
What I just read to you is extremely accurate but very hard to picture.
64
Now pay attention to what you picture as I tell you this.
65
Compound interest is like a snowball rolling down a hill.
66
At first it grows slowly, but each time it turns, it grows larger.
67
So it collects even more snow on the next turn.
68
Now four things have probably instantly happened.
69
You can picture it, you can understand the mechanism, you can remember it, and you could probably explain it to somebody else.
70
So this snowball example hasn't just made the information more entertaining, it's attached unfamiliar information to a familiar image that's already stored inside your viewer's brain.
71
And this could be attaching an example, an analogy, a metaphor, or a story to your existing point.
72
And I do this in almost every single one of my points I ever make on this channel.
73
And if you want help actually coming up with these analogies, I've created a custom GPT that will be your guide, your sidekick for making epic points.
74
That is in the description below.
75
Mistake number four is the 2D point.
76
And this is where you can explain a point well, but still have it just feel strangely forgettable.
77
And as the name suggests, it makes your points kind of fall flat.
78
And flat is not memorable.
79
There's no passing the click test.
80
So just imagine looking at a flat drawing of a cube.
81
This is like an idea.
82
And let's say in this example I'm making a point about something kind of intangible, making it hard for myself.
83
Something like the concept of authenticity.
84
So let's write that here.
85
So if I was to explain authenticity in a 2D way, I might say something like, authenticity is when you act how you genuinely feel.
86
And whilst that is the definition of authenticity, it's still a bit flat, as you can see.
87
So what we want to do is add the missing lines.
88
And as you can see, this flat shape suddenly becomes three-dimensional.
89
And what you're doing is showing the other side.
90
And what's on the other side of authenticity?
91
It is inauthenticity.
92
And in one of my most popular videos, what I did was actually instead of explain what authenticity is, I simply gave a definition of what inauthenticity is.
93
Inauthenticity is feeling one way and then presenting yourself in another way.
94
What this does is instantly make your point 3D.
95
It gives contrast, something to move away from and something to move towards.
96
It shows what it is versus what it isn't.
97
It shows the common belief versus the deeper truth, the old way versus the new way or the symptom versus the real cause.
98
Contrast lets the viewer see it from more than one angle.
99
So when your point feels flat, ask yourself, what does my idea stand against?
100
What is the opposite of this idea?
101
Clarity helps them understand, contrast makes it click.
102
Mistake number five is the anonymous point.
103
And when I stopped making this mistake, I finally started to see my engagement, my watch time, the hype points that people were giving me on YouTube all go up significantly.
104
Now you can explain something brilliantly, get your viewer nodding along, make something click in your brain.
105
But when they walk away from your video
106
and they want to explain it to a friend because they're so excited about it, they kind of find themselves fumbling over it and not actually making it click in their friend's brain.
107
Again, failing the make it click rule.
108
And this is because your idea might have had meaning, but it did not have identity.
109
An anonymous idea is very difficult to repeat, search for, and associate with you.
110
So imagine that your idea is this big, large, smooth box.
111
Imagine trying to carry that box.
112
You might be able to hold onto it for a moment, but it's pretty difficult to like pass to somebody else.
113
Now add a handle.
114
Suddenly it's very easy to pick up, pass to somebody else and let them have it.
115
A key name for your point is the handle on your idea.
116
The explanation gives it substance but the name, the handle, makes it portable.
117
And this is exactly why the advice of speak to camera naturally as
118
if you're just talking to one person is useful but the coffee shop rule is something portable that you can take away, remember and pass on.
119
So a key key name might be a rule, the coffee shop rule, a test, the click test, a method, the best friend method, a contrast, perfecting versus connecting, a command,
120
gesture to think, or a visual analogy, the snowball effect.
121
The name isn't there to sound clever, the name is there to compress the meaning.
122
And as I said in the intro, when the key name is strong enough, it can carry the entire video and become the packaging that makes your video blow up.
123
As I said, if you want to plan out banger points in your own videos I've got a free custom GPT
124
that you can use called the pull paint point method you can check
125
that out in the description below and this video I think is day number 21
126
or 22 of a daily upload that I've been doing this month on YouTube
127
if you want to find out how I've been making these
128
videos every day then you can watch this video next or explain some of the productivity secrets
