9
and resources why not visit patient .info now this week we're welcoming back a very special guest somebody
10
that you all loved
11
when he was our very first guest on series one youtube star danny was here with his wife surfy
12
and daughter athena and it was great to have them here talking about some challenges
13
that they were going through at the time now danny is
14
best known as the star of rate my takeaway the youtube channel
15
which went viral during covid
16
and now has millions of followers his catchphrase is now then guys you'll know him very well
17
and you may remember as well he took his fold -up table to the regions
18
and nations takeaways to try out the food there
19
but earlier this year danny suffered some serious health issues
20
and made the difficult decision to step away
21
and actually look at some new ventures
22
so we're excited to hear what those are yeah he's very
23
kindly agreed to come back to our studio to update us to have a cuppa with us as well
24
and tell us all about how life has been lately welcome
25
back danny malin thank you very much guys for having me
26
back oh it's lovely to see you again looking very well may i say you are
27
i've been doing all right last couple of months i've been doing a bit of self -care mentally
28
physically lost a bit of weight so yeah well you're looking great
29
and I remember last time you were here we did have a big conversation about mental health
30
and everything that you were going through at the time
31
so what's been going on now what what are these health issues what's been happening
32
so obviously last time I went on we're talking about you know stroke
33
and dealing with that I don't think we knew
34
that then I don't think we talked about it in fact
35
when you were last in you were you were at that stage
36
which we'll ask you about is why you didn't want people
37
to know at the time yeah yeah you're right yeah uh yeah
38
so i had the stroke
39
and i was dealing with it mentally the reason why i didn't want people to know is
40
because it wasn't i didn't want it to be seen as like a sympathy play
41
that kind of thing but also a bit concerned that people would
42
associate it with what i did on rate my takeaway and say oh well you're eating all this stuff
43
you're having a stroke uh at the time there were just
44
a lot of complications in my life a lot of stuff going on
45
and i actually had a blood clot in in the back here of my brain
46
and that that's what caused the initial first stroke right uh
47
and then uh i went in hospital got admitted to hospital for some a few days come out of hospital
48
and then me being me i had a couple of meet
49
and greets booked in one in leeds one in wakefield
50
and i thought i can't let the fans down yes i just cracked on with it
51
so we parked the van up
52
and i sat in the van didn't realise the impact it had actually had on my brain
53
and my body and I did one on the Monday one on the following Saturday
54
and then on the Sunday I lost 20 minutes of my life
55
because I had another stroke and were admitted to hospital again right
56
and then from then yeah it was just like like probably
57
about two months it was just intense physio I'd lost a
58
lot of feeling in me my left side i couldn't walk properly
59
and i was stumbling my face were drooping
60
so i got a lot of support from the nhs
61
which i love that and you know pinderfield hospital gets a lot of stick
62
but they were absolutely amazing right the staff there were fantastic with me
63
and you know since that as well i was under a psychiatric doctor okay later on
64
so this was like sort of september october last year
65
when i become mentally it really did do me in
66
and what it was is is how it's affected me the brain damage
67
that i've had is that i can't think as fast as i used to do
68
so i used to be quite off the cuff with things uh
69
and then i suffered a lot of fatigue so
70
when i get tired when it comes to like four
71
or five o 'clock i'm out i can't really do much
72
if i have an event
73
or something in the evening i have to go to bed through the day to conserve my energy
74
but coming to terms with that and realizing that were really difficult
75
and i started to lock myself away i'd go out
76
and i'd be filming i wasn't enjoying what i was doing
77
but i was just going to do it
78
because it paid the bills yeah and i come home
79
and i was locking myself away in the bedroom i just go to bed
80
and sophie bless her she was amazing
81
and she just kept relentlessly at me really saying look you
82
need to speak to the doctor you need to speak to the doctor
83
which i wouldn't and it got to a point
84
where i thought about taking my own life which is something i never thought i would do
85
uh and sophie just basically smashed the door down with the gp
86
and said look you need to to see him here
87
so i got to the gp and went got put under the psychiatric doctor
88
and with that i'll be honest i walked into that meeting i thought what is this going to achieve
89
you know why am i going to sit and talk to a stranger about what's going off in my head
90
and then i thought you know what you know sophie said
91
to me look just go in there with an open mind
92
and give it a go please she says for us just listen to what she says
93
and i did
94
and she started talking about putting your feelings on a leaf imagining it's on a river
95
and it's floating away and i'm thinking what is all this about
96
but let's go with it three weeks in wow you know just having somebody to she were unlocking thoughts
97
and feelings that i'd suppressed for years yeah
98
i didn't even know what she was doing
99
because she just got me talking about different things at my own comfortable pace
100
and but then started teaching me how to manage anxiety and feelings
101
because that was the biggest problem that i had that
102
because i didn't want to show weakness i didn't want to show
103
that i was suffering so i just locked myself away yeah
104
and then your own mind can sometimes be your own worst enemy because you sit there thinking all these things
105
so yeah so once it sort of got to like january time i was feeling a lot better mentally
106
and i started to see things a little bit more clear as well and how things in my life
107
were being taken advantage of and how
108
that had an impact in what i was doing
109
and how i was being controlled in different things so you know
110
that led to to obviously what's what's happened over the last few months
111
but i have got to say that anybody that's suffering with mental health is serious
112
and you know go out there
113
and seek help there is help out there you know i was lucky
114
that i've got a support network with my family
115
which were amazing uh i've got you know groups of friends
116
that were just absolutely incredible back then so like these guys the silverbacks
117
charity rugby league uh it's all ex rugby league players
118
and you know of professional and semi -pro
119
and just lads um you know women as well um you
120
know they're supportive on the phone the guy there johnny
121
and dave they were on the phone to me daily coming around to my house
122
dragging me out of bed saying to sophie we'll speak to him
123
and just having a coffee and you know
124
that there are people out there that will do all this
125
but if you haven't got those people in your life there are charities out there
126
but first and foremost your gp
127
and i didn't think it would work i thought it's nonsense we all everybody criticizes gps now
128
and in the nhs but you know what they do get it right
129
if you give them the chance to get it right
130
and they can and they can help you yeah
131
because i've gone down that route yeah
132
and i've i've i've spoken to my gp about my mental health
133
and I've had counselling through the NHS and it is invaluable
134
and it's great to hear that you found it so useful as well.
135
Yeah you know it was amazing a lot of people thought
136
oh he's got millions I'll be paying for it private which I ain't got millions
137
it's all the people have that I know people have
138
that assumption don't they but no NHS route do you know what I mean
139
and it's there and and it was great and I couldn't fault it And if I'm honest with you, you know, I've been discharged now,
140
but I can talk to her any time and I've sent her a few emails and she's responded.
141
And, you know, if I ever need to go back, then you can refer yourself back.
142
But it's just those few emails that I've sent over the last few months,
143
it's just a bit of reassurance and redirecting me to make sure that I'm right.
144
And I found it just, you know, a lot better i don't know how you got through those months after you had the stroke
145
because you were i know you didn't want anyone to know yeah
146
and you had the pressure of still having to be
147
that your cheery persona on camera uh
148
because that's as you said was what paid the bills
149
and everybody expected
150
that of you you were under pressure from the people probably running the channel to keep up appearances i mean and
151
and it's you also had a whole family to to keep
152
going with you know to look after no wonder really you
153
became depressed i mean as well as the physical effects of
154
having had the stroke you had the mental effects yeah and i think And the thing for me was,
155
is trying to prioritise what were most important.
156
And, you know, a lot of people, and we all do this in life, right, we spend a lot of time working, doing things to get money.
157
That's what we do.
158
Everybody's working, and we're chasing money.
159
We're chasing money all the time.
160
But now what I've done is I've realised I now need to spend money.
161
to get time because that's more important
162
so instead of me running around like an idiot doing things right i can pay somebody else to do it
163
and i can spend time with my family now
164
because that's and that's what the thing that's what twigged for me is that you don't realize
165
what you've actually got sometimes in front of you and you think
166
that you've got to be providing and you think
167
that you've got to be doing this you think
168
that you've got to be doing a service to everyone else
169
but really the most important people are those
170
that are closest to you health is wealth isn't it exactly
171
and that's something that i didn't realize because especially within social media
172
and the youtube world because it's so fast -paced
173
and one minute you're up here next minute you're down here
174
a lot of people you know they won't talk about your greatest moments still talk about your failures
175
so that's a fear when you're in this in this world
176
that you know you're always looking over your shoulder
177
if you're out you can't you you want to be careful
178
because everybody's got a phone you know so you know i'm not saying
179
that i go out effing and blinding and doing all this hot time
180
but you know we're all human yeah you know we've seen
181
it with other people where people have taken videos of people
182
and it's been put out of context of what it is
183
so you know you're all that pressure
184
so for me it was that's what we're going through my mind
185
and when I was watching some of the episodes back what we filmed I could see
186
that I was slurring I could see
187
that those are episodes where I've said words don't even make sense
188
but because I'm daft and jolly I made it make sense in
189
that way I realized a few seconds later
190
because I got a bit of a delay
191
so I'd be able to put a bit of a spin on it
192
but like people are coming and going what's he said there
193
and it turned into a joke but for me it was
194
so that's what started because I'm thinking what
195
if this gets worse yeah what if this starts to you know get worse
196
and I can't do what I do and then the impact is going out
197
and then that's what took me down that rabbit hole
198
but then again you know Sophie pulling me back out of
199
that hmm you know being persistent that she is and
200
and the kids you know you obviously you mentioned Athena the reason why they're not here today mate
201
if I fetch it today I should be having these cameras
202
over she's running around everywhere she's like Tasmanian devil watching her grow up now
203
so like the last sort of two and a half months I've spent
204
so much time with her because i've been mentally better
205
and it's been amazing i would have possibly say the first 12 months of her life i were on autopilot
206
so i didn't really know what was going on
207
and i missed a lot which is is
208
when i look back is sad uh
209
so now my focus is yeah i'm continuing to do social media
210
and i've got a lot of things going on
211
but i've got a lot of other people involved now
212
that are helping rather than hindering yeah
213
so it's not all just on your shoulders
214
and you know i feel a lot better yeah that's great
215
you're looking a lot better can i just take you back
216
because obviously with it with us you know health this is a health sponsored website
217
and i know there will be information on
218
that site about the signs of a of a stroke what
219
was it like for you did you have any inkling
220
that something was wrong with your health no so i was on the day it happened
221
we were going out for a meal and we were traveling over to sheffield
222
and i went out to my car
223
and i put some i'm putting some washer fluid in
224
because it was february so we know what roads are like february you're like
225
that all time aren't you so i thought right i better top it up
226
or something i'm not going to get back
227
and i'm not going to see
228
and i got to the car i remember feeling a little bit off as i'm putting this fluid in
229
and i thought oh that must be a bit strong you know
230
and And then I got back in the house and the next thing I know, I've got Sophie and Summer and George, they're all around me, Dad,
231
what's, you know, and I'm like, what's going on here?
232
And, you know, that's, I didn't really remember much.
233
And then I remember in A &E and it were packed
234
and three guys on a bed in the corridor and people coming up and then Sophie said.
235
she would argue still trying to take photos
236
and i would have a drip hanging out my arm yeah my face were all drooped i was like this
237
and people were like yeah it's him off rate my takeaway can have a photo
238
so yeah yeah she had to go get a private i can't believe
239
that when you say to them can you move into a room
240
but then obviously once they literally knew what i were in for then got whisked straight off uh
241
so i don't really remember like much of it and then And afterwards,
242
a bit like being on the stroke ward and it was just a bit confusing to what was happening.
243
Obviously, I went for a brain scan and they said about the blood clot.
244
And then like second time round again, that was just, I would put something in the microwave.
245
Next thing I'm on the sofa, I don't know what's going on.
246
and you know i i've been lucky enough that really lucky that i'm not i'm like lasting
247
duperness to my face and you know i still like
248
when i get to stumble sometimes
249
and i still struggle a bit on my left side i should really have an insert in my shoe
250
and a brace on my leg
251
but i said i ain't walking around like forrest gump that's
252
when i said you know i try
253
and turn it into humor yeah you're a tough guy don't you know i mean
254
and and it's you know struggling with things and having to try
255
and think hard about things sometimes is is difficult to what it used to be like uh
256
but i've spoken to other people you know the stroke association are brilliant i mean And I remember, so again, Sophie, she's just on it, right?
257
And I'm, like, not wanting people to know.
258
So she's contacted Stroke Association and she said, I've arranged for them to come and see you.
259
So I'm like, right, all right, fair enough.
260
Next thing, this car pulls up outside Stroke Association, straight down the side.
261
Biggest car in the world it used to have been.
262
To me, it looked like it was an arctic wagon, but it was a car just with Stroke Association age woman comes up all badged up
263
and i'm like oh my god and i i actually turned it away right
264
because and this is the thing as well we're having a stroke it affects your mood as well
265
so i've not been easy to live with for sophia
266
and the kids i've not been easy to live with at all especially at
267
that that first 12 months
268
because the modes well it's also you kind of getting your head around it as well
269
and yeah and kind of understanding what's what's actually happened to you as an individual
270
but it was also like short temper in a way
271
because i couldn't fully sometimes comprehend it and understand so when it first happened a lot of things were fuzzy
272
so no no don't do it and then afterwards i'd realize i'm
273
so sorry and then i get upset so
274
that a lot of things were affecting me like that
275
because i didn't want to obviously be like that with my family
276
and you know i've said like openly like with with with
277
the fallout with the guys from from rate my takeaway you know i said in in my video there
278
that you know i'm not putting all the blame on them
279
because i were difficult in these last nearly 18 months
280
because of the effect of the stroke
281
and you know i will with them no i don't want to do this now i don't want to do
282
that and you know but there's a lot of stuff going on there
283
but you know it's it affects you
284
and I've spoken to a lot of people now through the Stroke Association through Facebook
285
and I talk to people on there different people
286
and you know I've got another profile so people don't know who I am
287
and I talk to them about me and what's happened to them
288
and you know everybody's story is different yeah
289
and i always say it's like we can all read a textbook
290
and we can all read information but everybody's different
291
so we're mental health with bodies bodies work different mental health stuff we all process things in a different way
292
so it's like grief when when somebody passes away
293
if you've experienced grief in your life i don't go up to somebody
294
and go i know what you're going through because i don't think
295
that you do you see we all go through grief
296
and the loss
297
but we all deal with it in a different way some
298
people shut off some people break down some people saw happiness
299
you know it's not that's not to say you're not grieving
300
and grief has been a big thing of this
301
because that's sort of like what my family's had to do
302
a little bit they've had to grieve a little bit because a bit of me that's been lost
303
and then I've had to do that as well and to continue doing what I did
304
hiding out that But now when I look back,
305
I wish I'd have just been truthful from the off because hiding it all caused me a lot of issues.
306
So now, you know, it's just about honesty and going forward, dealing with mental health, dealing with the issues that I've got,
307
you know, and, yeah, I might look happy on camera, I might look great, but a lot of the times I was a broken man,
308
I was going home and how we're in bits
309
and everybody can put a face on and everybody can be happy
310
when you're on camera
311
because you know that's what you've got to do we're all in this game
312
and we know that when when
313
that camera's at you that's your job yeah gotta turn it
314
on right people are looking at you for a certain thing in a certain way right
315
but now i've realized we were at my takeaway a lot of people followed me through covid
316
and the amount of people that come up and said
317
that I helped them through difficult times in their life
318
and I'm like what are you talking about
319
and it was just bringing them pure joy just to watch me singing
320
and dancing and even when I were over here in the market dressed up doing all
321
that stuff they were watching me on Facebook
322
and it was bringing them joy yeah and at first I didn't understand
323
that but now I get it yeah yeah and that you felt
324
that pressure to keep up that persona
325
but then you made the decision to be honest
326
and open about what had happened and the situation that you're in
327
and that must have been quite a relief in many ways
328
and because the outpouring of love
329
and support you had online as well was was incredible yeah I mean I'll be honest with you doing
330
that that video and the reason why I did it right is
331
because I always said to Sophie because like Sophie was saying look I think we
332
or you should tell your story you know and i were like
333
when the time's right i will and she's like you know
334
and she was supporting me and i went on another podcast with a mate of mine
335
and i filled in for him uh somebody else
336
and i'm sat on the podcast with him and we're chatting
337
and he asked me a question and it just felt right
338
and i just spoke about it and i went what
339
and afterwards i'm like oh god and he's like look mate
340
if you want me to cut this out and I went do you know what
341
no I don't I says leave it in I knew
342
that it wasn't going out until the week after
343
so I then had a week to let everybody know what
344
was going on before it went out on on another podcast
345
if you like so I went home I spoke to the lads
346
that made my takeaway and said right I've done this
347
and they were like oh do you think that's the right thing
348
and i went well it's it's my decision to make yes i do
349
so we'll mention it on a video and obviously with me
350
and sophie so i did a video with sophie we put it out there
351
and i was scared i was absolutely bricking it because i thought
352
if people then just go in at me and
353
because i have some really nasty trolls really nasty people i
354
mean a lot of the time 99 of the time it's water off a duck's back because i'm not right bothered
355
you know I've got a thick skin with it all now so it's very rarely anything really gets to me
356
but with this because it was such a traumatic event for me
357
and my family I was worried
358
and we'd actually booked a holiday with Sophie's dads to go
359
to Benidorm good old Benner's you know just before the sun
360
kicks in get down there you know no frills no five -star hotel it what three all -inclusive, pool were freezing, but the sea were warm and it were great.
361
And this had gone out a couple of days before we went.
362
And I remember getting there and I'm looking at all these comments
363
and I was sat on the balcony in the morning and I was just sobbing
364
because I was just so overwhelmed with the support of members.
365
I'm joking.
366
With the support that...
367
Sorry.
368
No, it's okay.
369
that people were what were giving me and sophie and it just alleviated a lot of the pressure and you know for
370
that full week i was just like i were in a bit of a trance
371
because i was just like why have i been
372
so worried about talking about the truth because a lot of my life's online
373
and yeah with different things not just eating food but with mr
374
and mrs yorkshire and you know with athena
375
and we do a lot of stuff together
376
so people know a lot about my life
377
but the main thing i kept away
378
and still to this day people still message me and
379
and say that they've had a stroke the same
380
and then i talk to them and we're messaging um you know i try
381
and give different examples of things that I've done but you know for me it's just about
382
i know that it's hard i know it's tough yeah
383
when you've had that you need to but you need
384
but people relate to you
385
and that's the that's the key with you danny everybody relates to you
386
and every part of your life you know they want to they're following you
387
and everything that happens to you they want to be involved
388
and to support you they feel like your family yeah yeah definitely
389
and you know it like since i've spoke about it i've then been involved in different things
390
and it's all it's all been positive
391
but i'm going to talk about something now this week has
392
been there's been a little bit of negative right about the stroke
393
and this is you know might be jumping you're gonna hear a little bit
394
but with social media like i said before you have ups
395
and downs and obviously with the breakup of rate my takeaway there's been a lot of
396
talk about that and you know i've done a few statements and lads have put a few things out And, you know, after a couple of weeks, we've not really spoken about anything online.
397
We've kept it between us.
398
But other people have clipped comments and said stuff, which I don't mind.
399
They're entitled to do and say what they want to say and people have got their own opinion.
400
But one guy on TikTok, he's known as Painfully Honest Reviews, did a TikTok three or four days ago.
401
and it was, he allegedly had information that I'd not had a stroke
402
and it was actually a TIA and that I were only doing it to get views and this and other,
403
which, that upset me.
404
When I say nothing, it gets to me.
405
Wait, why would you go through all that?
406
Yeah, it upset me.
407
And he's banging on about, if you can prove to me
408
that you've had a stroke, then that's great i let people know what on earth has
409
it got to do with him it's none of his business
410
and this is what i thought you know but
411
but it got to because you know what my family's been through so much
412
right and my daughter saw that video and she's beside herself yeah
413
because you know and he does these videos
414
and it what he does to people
415
and what he says about people you know again he's getting clicks he's getting what he does
416
and that's what he does right that's clickbait isn't Yeah, if you sleep at night, what he does, that's fine, right?
417
So I emailed him because that's what he asked me to do.
418
I asked him for his phone number because I wanted to phone him and have a conversation.
419
I said I wouldn't share it because I'm not that kind of person to say, oh, look, this is his name and address and phone number.
420
I'm not that kind of guy.
421
But I just wanted to talk to him and just say, look, mate, there's a lot of stuff what you've said about me on different things
422
which I'll get to him later on when I can.
423
But on this specific one, I want to talk to you and get it cleared up.
424
Yeah.
425
He didn't want to talk over the phone.
426
Didn't want to give me his phone number.
427
Of course he didn't.
428
Said that he wanted me to go into my NHS app and produce my medical records.
429
That's absolutely outrageous.
430
It is unbelievable.
431
So, and that, if I did that, then he'd take the video down.
432
And it wasn't so much that I wanted to do it.
433
It was because I wanted to get it off.
434
Yeah.
435
Because of the effect that it's having on my family.
436
So you went to that length.
437
She didn't need to, really.
438
Well, I provided him a letter, right?
439
But again, with this at first, I provided him with a letter that was to say that I'd been referred to the psychiatric doctor that said,
440
because of the effects of the stroke.
441
Not TIA, because of the stroke.
442
So it had the word stroke, right?
443
So I said to him, I'll provide you with that, but please don't put the context of the details in there
444
because it had different things about my mental health on this letter.
445
Exactly.
446
Is that personal information that you don't want to share?
447
Yeah, but I was willing to send it to him.
448
And at first they come back with, well, that's like me getting a letter from my optician about my tooth.
449
I'm like, what are you on about?
450
It's an NHS and it says about my stroke and that I've got to get treatment.
451
So in the end I sent it to him and he took the video down.
452
What's boggled me is that when he's done people in before, and they've proved
453
that he's wrong he's then done a video to say i'm
454
wrong i'm sorry they provided this proof he hasn't done
455
that for me what he's done is he just took the video down
456
and then just left it yeah because he knows you want an apology yeah ideally
457
but he shouldn't be allowed to do that in the first place
458
and even as you're describing it it sounds like blackmail yeah In some way, like wanting personal documents from you to prove something.
459
So he can say anything he likes for clicks and money -making measures on TikTok.
460
So he says anything just to get the hits.
461
And you've got to then bear your soul to get it taken off.
462
So he's done two or three other videos about issues with Rate My Takeaway, right?
463
And that's fine.
464
Because that's what I do for a job. But this was personal.
465
So whoever has messaged into him, which I've got a good idea who it is, what's going on, you know,
466
they've just so low, right?
467
But I said to him in this email, have you, the proof that you've got,
468
is it from a medical professional or from an NHS letter?
469
Is it any of that? because if it isn't, then really, it's nothing.
470
Yeah, exactly.
471
But I had to provide that.
472
Oh, it's so bad.
473
That's so bad.
474
And this is the other side of it.
475
Yeah, this is the other side.
476
That sent me right back. Of course.
477
And on that train journey home from London on Tuesday, I what?
478
Sweat dripping down my face.
479
I threw up because of the trauma that had caused my family what were going on with them seeing that video.
480
And I thought, you know what?
481
Because people can have a go at me for stuff that I do online.
482
They can talk to me about my takeaway.
483
If they don't agree with certain things that I do, that's fine.
484
And I'll defend myself.
485
If I've done wrong, then I'll say I've done wrong.
486
But that was just an attack on my personal response.
487
They should be, honestly, blinking laws in place.
488
Well, they should.
489
There are, aren't there?
490
But nobody, they don't know.
491
And it's a bigger debate.
492
It's defamation.
493
It's libel.
494
It is.
495
Yes, it is.
496
It's a bigger debate, isn't it?
497
And I think we've talked about this before in the series about the impact
498
that that has and how people get away with it.
499
It's unregulated.
500
It's wrong.
501
Because that is a personal attack on you and it just boils.
502
It could be seen as a hate crime, I mean, and that is a crime now.
503
So, you know, people who do this sort of thing are asking for trouble.
504
This is me, right?
505
This is how much of a nice guy I am.
506
I've agreed as well in this email that once things have been sorted out with Rate My Takeaway, I will address the other things that he's said, which I don't have to do.
507
He's asked me if I will, and I said, yeah, I will.
508
But at this moment in time, I can't.
509
Let's talk about that decision to walk away from Rate My Takeaway over the summer.
510
Big, big decision for you, and I know it's been something you obviously were thinking about, but it's everything really that has happened to you in this last year
511
or so has played into that hasn't it yeah yeah it's you know it's difficult to talk about now because
512
when I first made
513
that decision I sent the guys a resignation letter with my reasons in there for for resigning
514
which was a lot to do with my mental health
515
and how the structure of my takeaway way
516
and working with them had played into that and basically
517
that I needed to walk away to get myself better
518
which was difficult to do because yeah we built
519
that together all three of us and we built something amazing
520
and we created a channel that went viral
521
and you know as we said earlier on provided a lot of pleasure for a lot of people you know
522
so I'll never take that away from them and said
523
that there wasn't a part of that because there was because we did it together
524
but behind the scenes there were a lot of issues with us
525
and we fell out a lot and like i say you know i'm not saying
526
that i'm perfect because i'm not uh but there were things
527
that that i promised i didn't get from day one and in that resignation letter i give options to move on
528
now when i put that first video out to say i was leaving
529
that resignation letter had gone in a week before
530
and this is what people don't know and within that week i just got abuse and grief
531
from the guys yeah and so i did
532
that first video i got threatened with legal action
533
so i had to wait the seven days
534
because i got told i was going to receive a letter
535
from the solicitor by five o 'clock on the friday five o 'clock come
536
and that letter never come so six o 'clock i put the first video out announcing
537
that i were leaving they then put a number of they put a video out themselves
538
which lasted three hours they then took it down then put a statement out
539
which lasted another three or four hours and they took
540
that down they put another one out which they kept editing
541
and then over the course another three or four statements went out
542
which they kept taking down
543
because not once did they admit any guilt they pushed all the blame onto me saying
544
that it was a surprise it wasn't a surprise to them they knew
545
that things were fragile they knew that that i wasn't right
546
but they were just hoping that because of the money factor I keep going.
547
So I got locked out of everything, the bank account.
548
That got emptied, split between the three of us.
549
They did empty it, but they split the money between the three of us.
550
The van got taken.
551
I still don't know where that is to this day.
552
Do you own any of the van?
553
Is that something that you have?
554
Yeah, in my mind, I own the van because the money that we got from YouTube and sponsorship paid for the van.
555
Well, it's a joint asset then, isn't it?
556
But unfortunately, the way that it's been done, I didn't know this, but it's been done through different companies' payments.
557
I didn't know this.
558
I had no control over the channel.
559
Right.
560
I had no, and this, towards the end, we was in Malaysia on a family holiday, and my daughter, who's now 16,
561
when she finished her exams I took her away for five days to Mallorca just me
562
and her to say well done for the exams
563
and we did two or three videos for Rate My Takeaway because we're in Mallorca, someone don't mind being on let's capitalise on this and do a few videos
564
so I did the videos put them up
565
and she was 15 at the time and the amount of abuse that she got from men
566
saying things like I'll put my hot dog in your bun oh no right god was driving me insane
567
but I could not remove these comments because I did not have the power
568
and the access the access the access to do it
569
and they just allowed that to stay on there
570
so I was constantly asking them to remove this
571
and they let they just let all they let it stay on oh that's they've said
572
that they haven't but I've got all the proof and it's all it's all nuts but that
573
that happened like June So the back end of July when I'm in Malaysia
574
and my daughter's crying because people are sending me these messages saying, oh, look what people are saying about you.
575
I lost it.
576
I'll be honest with you, I lost it.
577
And I phoned the editor up and I said, I'm telling you now, if you do not take these comments off, I will not do one more video for this channel.
578
Yeah, but, you know, it could affect the algorithm.
579
I don't give a shite about the algorithm saying i don't you know yeah i want it off yeah
580
and he took it off
581
but it was six weeks too late yeah it should have
582
been flitted straight away for me that's what started to get me to think they were putting themselves the family
583
and your family yeah because sophie's had so much abuse on there yeah
584
and in the the second video
585
that i did i spoke about a lot of things i spoke about sponsorship
586
because i've had a bit of a bit of beef with
587
another tick tocker youtuber food review club over uh he got
588
outed for charging takeaways for reviews you were charging them up to 1500 quid to go right
589
and i got loads of messages and emails saying danny do you do this What do you think of this?
590
So I did a video about it, and I said, to be honest, I think it's disgusting to charge an independent business that amount of money.
591
And if you're doing a review, don't charge.
592
If you're going to charge, if that's what you want to do, just don't score it.
593
So you can do the same thing, but don't say it's a 9 out of 10, 10 out of 10.
594
And I did that video, and I spoke about other things in there, Which, you know, looking back, I will admit, and I'll say it,
595
and I have apologised to Matt about it.
596
Maybe I should have kept it to myself, right?
597
Because it caused me a bit of grief, and I apologise.
598
But it's like when I did this second video, I spoke about the sponsorship, because we have had sponsorship.
599
We have been paid to do reviews but not paid in
600
that way so there was one paid review
601
which i didn't know about until i'd done it
602
because again i have no control of this channel they decide where we go they tell me
603
when we're going they edit it they upload it i've got no control whatsoever yeah right
604
so for all i know they could have been charging people for every review i don't know
605
because i never saw the bank accounts until october last year
606
and with five -year outline so i never saw anything
607
and i've never seen the past accounts everyone thought you were
608
like this is your own channel didn't they a lot of people didn't realize
609
that yeah so we did a deal with uber where uber provided us with a list of 50 takeaways in Leeds Bradford.
610
and they wanted us to go and review one and what i said was is i did not want to know
611
which one i was going to yeah because then i could give it an honest review
612
were these all like uber eats then so they were all uber eats yeah
613
so i didn't mention uber didn't mention that uber sent me there didn't mention
614
that it were paid
615
because it was a sponsorship deal with uber just to visit
616
a place it wasn't paid by the place it wasn't the place influencing me
617
and i didn't know where i was going i didn't
618
because i knew all these places most of them were all
619
over just eat delivery they've all got they're on them all yeah
620
so i just go and review it and then afterwards
621
that one of them ticked off all right great some of
622
them i get 10s some of them i get eights nines
623
but every one of them we're honest with you right
624
so to me it's different to what matt were doing
625
and uh you know it has just been a bit of banter with me
626
and matt as he called it and i called it
627
and this is where i think should i really said
628
that i don't know and i still sort of stay to it
629
because i called him called it bullying
630
because he used to say things about oh maybe i should get a table
631
and share i get more views and all this
632
and he'd met comments like that
633
but I'd never react I've never spoken to the guy personally we've never exchanged a message personally right
634
so he said it was banter and I'm like well banters
635
when it's a two -way thing yeah so I did a couple of podcasts
636
and started doing this bantering thing and saying
637
if you want to jump in ring for misfits I'll knock your beard off
638
and all this you know a bit of banter thinking look yeah well
639
if he's doing it you can do it yeah I mean uh
640
but then obviously So when I put the statement out about leaving my takeaway, he went in and he did his statement and he was like, hi, you're only an employee.
641
You've got your P45 now, which I'm not an employee because I own 33%.
642
It's not like that again.
643
What's it got to do with him?
644
There's a lot of chancey, I would say.
645
Do you know what?
646
Fair play to him.
647
I knew it were going to come, right?
648
Because it's an opportunity for him, right?
649
And I agree with it all and I took it all at chin
650
and I fought fair play up to the point where he brought in the mental health card
651
and he overstepped them out with that.
652
All right, because I thought there's no need to put that in there because it's a serious thing.
653
What I did say is that, you know, I'd never wish him to suffer anything that I've gone through.
654
All right.
655
And I said I'd love to sit down with him, have a coffee and hash it out.
656
But he clearly said that's never going to happen.
657
He's never going to talk about me again.
658
And he has since then.
659
He gets hits on his channel.
660
But obviously, you know, at that point he thought, I'm done.
661
Yeah, yeah.
662
He thought, I'm gone, I've left my takeaway, that's it, it's over.
663
Well, more for him thinking that.
664
Yeah.
665
So it's been difficult to make that decision and there's a lot of issues between me and the lads,
666
which is upsetting because in the beginning it were great and we were friends and we had some good times together.
667
We went on an American tour, all three of us, which were amazing.
668
And in between filming, we sat around the pool and we're chilling
669
and one of them gets burnt like a lobster
670
and the other one's laughing and we're in Vegas and it's just like, we're unreal.
671
So I've got some good memories, but unfortunately there's some bad ones.
672
It was never about money for me.
673
It was always about just what's fair and just having access to money.
674
take the messages off yeah having access to
675
if you were an equal partner in it you should have been able to do
676
that never had access to tick tock yeah
677
but it's my face that's all over yeah it's just simple
678
things just give me a password well you're the brand you're the brand yeah
679
and it's and business but it's your business partners that you're losing
680
but also like you just said it's a friendship
681
that you had for a number of years and i think
682
that that that hurt as well that the friendship broke down
683
and then because that broke down and then the way different situations
684
that I was in that I had to film
685
and I didn't really want to film it become where I didn't want to go to work
686
and Sophie again like she's spoken to me about it since
687
and like since I left she's overwhelmed because she was scared
688
when I went away for a few days filming
689
that I wasn't going to come back because of the anxiety that I would have.
690
I'd go out and film and then I'd just go straight back to the hotel and go to bed.
691
Up the next morning, film, go to bed.
692
I remember because I'm close to Sophie and she told me about that period, you know, and she's so loving and supportive.
693
She literally is a living angel, honestly.
694
She really is.
695
But in my video, that second one, I said in there that she's had so much stick on this channel, right, and they never took it off.
696
And they let people call it be racist to her.
697
they let people say some disgusting things about her and never took it off right and
698
she was no part of this decision whatsoever this decision was mine and mine alone to make
699
she did not influence it in one bit
700
because she just wanted me to want what i wanted to be okay yeah
701
and i made this decision she did i think she was very happy
702
if none if it all stopped tomorrow as long as you were okay
703
but you know what happened i put the second video out what happened
704
rate my takeaway come on the comments blame me sophie straight away really yeah
705
and that's the thing that i wanted to do a farewell video
706
but how could i do one to put on the rate my takeaway channel
707
when they had control and they would film and edit it
708
because they wouldn't let me sit there and say what i said
709
and say the truth and you've taken a different path in your own life yeah you you
710
and sophie built up the mr and mrs yorkshire brand yourself yeah
711
but you've also got a new channel
712
that just launched very recently yes tell us about that
713
so through all this that's been going on over the past what year
714
and a half two years another creator come on the scene onto the youtube scene,
715
older guy wears his gilet called Gary Eats
716
and Gary is a bit similar to myself in how he is but he's a lot more posher he's not as common,
717
he's a southern lad so he's not as northern as me and he eats in a lot posher places,
718
he doesn't just do takeaways he does Michelin style restaurants but he is harsh, so he's gone up against like Gordon Ramsay
719
and he's gone in like rick stein has been down to his restaurants
720
and it's been publicized on papers and news because he's gone down
721
and gone this is unacceptable to come down to rick stein's restaurant
722
and eat this food and pay this money uh
723
and then i had him on rate my takeaway for an episode
724
and it went at rick stein's fish and chip restaurant
725
and me him and another creator called green oil went
726
and we tried the fish and chips and it was amazing
727
and gary said since he went the game
728
so we've done a few videos together and Gary's
729
when I put the notice out about me leaving my takeaway I'm not kidding you
730
when that video went out my phone
731
I thought it was going to explode
732
because it was ping ping phone calls phone calls from all different food creators all different creators on YouTube Instagram
733
and that friends family
734
because I didn't even tell a lot of family friends neither what I was doing
735
and they were like shocked like what what's going on me man what's that normal i was talking about
736
but uh gary he was phoning me every day every day
737
without failing it was like how's it going how are you
738
feeling today don't let it get you down you know and then we met up for a coffee
739
and he's like damn what you're going to do i don't know guys you know i'm doing stuff on mr
740
and mrs yorkshire which i'm enjoying i says but obviously people want to see me reviewing food I says,
741
but I've just, I'd lost confidence and I didn't know who to trust.
742
So he says, Ward, do you fancy doing something together?
743
And I'll scale down Gary Eats and we'll do a channel together.
744
And I thought, wow.
745
We sat for four hours in a pub in London.
746
Me, him, Sophie and his son chatting about it.
747
They wanted Sophie involved, which was amazing because she was never allowed to be involved in anything else before.
748
That's brilliant.
749
So she was involved.
750
I'm sat there thinking, wow, and I've given total control, got everything, and he has as well.
751
It's straight down the middle.
752
Yeah.
753
And we've been filming now for five weeks.
754
A few episodes have gone out.
755
It's been great, but you know what?
756
It has been the best time of my life
757
because I have had such a spring in my step you can see in your face you look
758
so much more relaxed yeah talking about it as well do you know what it's
759
so weird because we're like we're so different but so similar
760
and like people were saying oh no it's not going to work it's not going to do this
761
but it's totally different
762
because he's taking me into michelin star restaurants he's taking me
763
to a restaurant where i'm having a steak at 135 quid
764
that i used to sell across the road here for a fiver yeah the same size and the same flavour, the same sort of steak and I'm saying this going, that's an absolute rip -off.
765
Brilliant.
766
We're in a London restaurant and I'm saying that's just, that's a rip -off, go to your local butcher, they'll do you one better for a tenner, don't be coming down here.
767
And then we're going to takeaways, but I think what it is, because Gary were known for being harsh right when he scored him
768
And I would always give it nines and tens because I've been recommending the best places to go.
769
Here, we've mixed it up.
770
We're pitting places against each other.
771
So in one episode, there'll be two restaurants because we're seeing which is the best.
772
Right.
773
We're doing chains and we're seeing which one of those is the best.
774
What's the value for money?
775
We're putting a meaning behind the videos.
776
I love it.
777
But there's comedy.
778
One of them, I'm laughing about a sausage.
779
for different reasons, right, and I can't stop laughing and we're leaving it in and Gary's just like, do you not want this big meaty one?
780
And I'm like, Gary, just, I'm trying not to.
781
You're going to wax.
782
Yeah, but you know what it's like, you know, when you're doing this and if someone gets you chuckling like a little kid, you can't stop.
783
Yeah.
784
And that's it.
785
And then, like, the cameraman's laughing and I'm like, you won't shut up.
786
But people love to see that as well.
787
Yeah.
788
They really do.
789
It's just bringing out a different side in us both and, yeah, some of it's going to be childish and some of it's going to be, but it's different, right?
790
But the end game is it's still about food.
791
Yeah.
792
But again, so on the third episode that we filmed, Gary went, I want to tell enough.
793
Because his son, right, he's the producer, the editor.
794
He does all this, and what we agreed is you run it, right?
795
He's responsible for making sure what we're doing, it's right, wherever we're going, and we'll turn up.
796
Because you've got to put a story together.
797
You've got to have somebody like that.
798
You've got somebody here that's doing all that, that's helping you put it all together.
799
You've got to have somebody like that.
800
You can't be naive to think you can just put a camera in front of yourself and do it yourself, because it does not work.
801
So I says, why, what's he told you off for?
802
And he says, I've been told to up my game.
803
I says, up your game.
804
because in my takeaway it's limited of what i can say because we're talking about burgers and kebabs
805
we're going into restaurants and i'm sat there i'm talking about different cuts of beef
806
and me i'm identifying in one place that gary's going this lamb's a bit tough i says yeah that's good
807
wow oh you know yeah yeah butchers for five years yeah you know
808
and then i'm talking about flavors in michelin star restaurants
809
and he's looking at me like yeah you're right teaching him yeah yeah that's what it is
810
but then also he's then doing things that's in teaching me
811
and we're learning off each other and this is what's going to surprise people
812
because people just think i've just got a limited knowledge
813
but i've actually got quite a good palate
814
and i know a lot about food but yeah i've got
815
that i've got the mr mrs yorkshire which is great
816
because with me and sophie we're able to do a lot more family content
817
but involve food in it now as well which is amazing uh
818
so we've got a lot of exciting stuff coming up
819
and a new podcast yeah we've got a podcast coming exciting
820
so that should we should be be airing
821
that sort of back in the december january
822
and that's with a fella barnesley yes it could have been
823
on by now yes i don't know i haven't got a date well yes
824
but i think it might well be by Yeah, so it could have been on.
825
So if it is on, I don't know what it's called yet.
826
Oh, you just have to randomly find it.
827
It'll be there, it'll be there.
828
So I'm doing it with a guy called Jordan Gray.
829
Right.
830
So if anybody's from Barnsley, they'll know Jordan.
831
And if you don't know him, you will definitely see him.
832
He's about seven foot tall.
833
If you're a boxing fan, then you'll see him there because he's most likely walking out, usually up front with Tyson Fury, Yusek and all of them.
834
He's there, he's done stuff with Luke Littler.
835
So on Tuesday, I'm coming back from London, right, and I'm on train.
836
He's sending me a message and he's just stepping onto a private jet to fly back to Paris.
837
And I'm saying, this is wrong, this mate.
838
I says, we've got this.
839
I should have the jet and you should be on the train.
840
Yeah, it should be the other way around.
841
We're doing it slightly different to a conventional podcast.
842
Okay.
843
So we're going to be using, because obviously I'm also involved with Estabolo, so they used to sponsor Rate My Takeaway.
844
The restaurant.
845
Yeah.
846
but recently I acquired shares in the Barnsley one for myself and so I'm involved in that.
847
Right.
848
And what we're going to do is we're going to be using the restaurant as the setting.
849
Oh, brilliant.
850
So when it's closed, we can be at the bar
851
or we can be sat down or even when it's open and have a bit of meat.
852
But that also allows us to have access to all of those restaurants and it's got them dotted around.
853
There's one up in Aberdeen, so if we're up there doing a podcast, we can use that.
854
You've always got a place to.
855
Yeah, and he also has got Habibis.
856
He's got one in Leeds, one in Manchester.
857
So we're going to be using them.
858
Great.
859
So if you ever want an on -location...
860
Is that Zach?
861
Yes.
862
I know Zach.
863
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
864
I know you do.
865
Yeah, yeah.
866
So if you ever want an on -location, I can sort that out.
867
If you ever want to use one of them and do a bit of a...
868
drinking a bit of meat Yorkshire Talks goes on tour I know yeah let's do it we can do
869
that yeah so that's exciting because he's a character
870
and what I mean by a character I'm going to have to rein him in
871
right because
872
you know when I'm on camera I don't swear much because you know it's a certain audience that I've got
873
but Jordan is a typical Barnsley fella
874
and he's effing and jeffing out time
875
and I'm like mate we're going to have to rein
876
that in for this podcast because it's just going to be a beat fest
877
so but i'm doing uh
878
or you know i would have done the uh firework display at lock park on on saturday uh
879
and he says guess what i'm your security i said what do you mean
880
so i'm lighting the bonfire and they've got the security company
881
and they've said that they're going to put jordan with me as security i'm like mate i'm not
882
that famous i don't need you talking about you it's going from tyson fury
883
and look literally to me well i've seen you get mobbed in the few pubs what I've been out with you.
884
So, yes, I've got that.
885
And then I've got Danny's Collective, which is coming up.
886
Go on.
887
So this will be running now.
888
Yeah.
889
So obviously I had my takeaway kitchen in Huddersfield.
890
But again, because of the fallout with the guys, that has taken a real bad hit.
891
And we went down to two vendors.
892
People left because somebody started up a Facebook page, boycott it.
893
Oh, right because of me and them being involved in a business together
894
because of how they feel about them and the situation they did.
895
They thought that the money that it's all going to us, to be honest, it doesn't make that much because we don't charge that much.
896
It's more about giving the independent vendors a platform.
897
A platform, yeah, and creating a community, yeah.
898
So we had to pull away from that, and the pack horse actually served his notice and asked us to leave online for November.
899
Right.
900
So we've come away, but then I did a deal with them that I would come back as myself,
901
as Danny's Collective, and try and revive it because I still believe in Huddersfield.
902
Yeah, yeah.
903
It's coming up.
904
So Danny's Collective is totally different.
905
It's going to be a set of socials where it's not just going to be food.
906
It's going to be pubs, bars, restaurants, sofa shops, nail bars i want to create a social platform for people to come on
907
and sort of an advertising platform if you like
908
and share it's an online platform yeah
909
so it's going to be on instagram facebook
910
but they're going to be collaborating with each other right to
911
get each other's audience i'm just going to give it a go
912
and see how it is running yeah yeah so yes i've got
913
so with all that i've got enough on oh danny it's been absolutely lovely of you to come
914
and talk to us about what's been happening and being
915
so honest and sharing sharing your story
916
and i'm sure we'll hopefully have you back again
917
if that's okay with you definitely you're so it's
918
so lovely to listen to your talk
919
and i think you will help a lot of people definitely definitely i'm going to get it on camera now
920
so i've got evidence and i want it keeping in mr editor
921
so when me
922
and jordan do the podcast i'd like to invite you on
923
okay we'd love to we'd love to turn the tables on you
924
it is going to be different it is going to be
925
different for you thank you danny we'd love to do
926
that yeah danny thank you very very much indeed thank you
927
and everything danny's talked about as well health wise there will be information on the patient .info app
928
if you want to go there and can i just say i did use
929
that as well did you yes you used it yeah so
930
when i saw that you what that's why
931
when i said today about the sponsor yeah i did use it
932
and again it's
933
because trying to find information about things we've all done it you go on google you put something in right
934
and you think that's it you're going to lose your leg you've got a little spot on your knee
935
and you're going to lose your leg no don't do that go go go to this because it's health professionals
936
i'm not giving anything i'm saying from experience here you know
937
because i am one of those that gets a splinter
938
and thinks i'm going to lose my arm
939
so you do need to no that's brilliant something give our love to sophie
940
and all the children yeah it's been lovely to chat to you again thank you guys yeah
941
and that's just about it from another episode of yorkshire talks isn't it it is thank you
942
so much danny as well i mean it's just amazing everything
943
that you spoke about today so really appreciate you being
944
so open about it all we do so yeah
945
that was it for today we will be back with our next episode of yorkshire talks
946
but please don't forget to like and subscribe and We'll see you next time.
947
Yeah, bye for now.
948
Take care.
