1
So hi, hello, my precious little angel babies.
2
I realized something really important about life the other day while cleaning the bathrooms.
3
So every night we clean the bathrooms at the restaurant.
4
And the other day I noticed that I did it really, really quickly.
5
Now I don't time myself when I clean the bathrooms, but the other day I was really anxious to get out of there.
6
And I checked the clock before I went in to clean the bathrooms.
7
And I checked the clock when I came out after I cleaned the bathrooms.
8
And it only took me 15 minutes.
9
and I was really confused for a second because I was like why did that only take me 15 minutes?
10
I feel like that should have taken me the normal 30 minutes
11
or at least it feels like 30 minutes whenever I clean the bathrooms but apparently it's only 15.
12
Now I've been cleaning these bathrooms for three years now, three years at this restaurant.
13
So of course one would expect that it would take less
14
and less time to do it but not only does it take less
15
and less time to do it and it requires very, very minimal conscious and physical effort because over the years I've gotten
16
so efficient and built my routine of how I clean these bathrooms to be
17
so highly efficient that it doesn't cost me much energy.
18
I just do it.
19
And it made me realize that's what I want the rest of my life to feel like.
20
I want the rest of my life to feel that easy and effortless.
21
I want it to feel that easy to eat healthy
22
and exercise and study and do all these things that take a lot of my mental and physical effort to do.
23
And it feels like I have to force myself and it feels like it's awful and it's horrible.
24
And as I was checking the clock and realizing it only took 15 minutes to do these bathrooms, I was thinking when I first started cleaning these bathrooms three years ago,
25
it was the dread of the day.
26
It was my, I hated it.
27
I'd skip it some days.
28
I didn't want to do it.
29
It was the worst thing in the world.
30
I hated it so bad.
31
And I would dread it literally the whole day.
32
I was like, I don't want to have to think about this.
33
I don't want to do this.
34
This fucking sucks.
35
I was so pissed.
36
So pissed I had to clean the bathrooms after everything else I had to do that day.
37
And now it's easy.
38
I don't even think about it till I have to do it.
39
And even as I'm doing it, I'm not even thinking about it.
40
I'm just scrubbing as hard as I can and getting out of there as quickly and efficiently as possible.
41
And again, that's what I want my life to feel like.
42
Not that I'm working hard,
43
but that the hard work comes very effortlessly because I've built a routine that makes me incredibly efficient at the work.
44
That I work both hard, but also smart.
45
And it's like this repetition that I've been doing over the years turned something meaningless into a skill that I now have.
46
And it made me think about that one quote by Aristotle that goes, we are what we repeatedly do.
47
Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.
48
And that quote by Aristotle actually, let me dive into that a little bit because that gets often very misquoted.
49
So basically what Aristotle was saying when he said, we are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an act but a habit,
50
doesn't necessarily mean do good things repeatedly and you'll become excellent.
51
It's more talking about character and how to build character and how character is formed through repeated actions.
52
So you don't become disciplined because you woke up at 5 a.m one morning, you become disciplined through repeatedly keeping promises to yourself.
53
Basically meaning that it's not about doing one big action.
54
It's about who you are creating yourself to be through the repetition of your actions. Does that make sense?
55
It's like you do the exact same thing over and over and over again, whether consciously or unconsciously, and eventually that repetition changes you.
56
And there's actually kind of a fascinating thing that happens psychologically when we practice something and repeat something over and over.
57
So basically we go from conscious effort to a practiced behavior to it being automatic and that becoming a skill.
58
Kind of think about driving.
59
Like when you first learned to drive a car, you were very hyper-conscious of everything about the mirrors, about the pedal, about 10 and two on the wheel,
60
about using your turn signal, about traffic, about how far away you were from the car in front of you, all of these things.
61
You had to consciously think about it.
62
And it was the first thing in your brain and you had to focus and concentrate so much in the beginning.
63
Now you practice that over and over and over again until it became automatic.
64
Your brain learned the pattern and you were able to hold
65
and assimilate that pattern in your long-term memory and you were able to run with it.
66
And eventually that conscious effort is still there,
67
but it becomes so automated that it happens within a millisecond that you don't even have to think about it consciously.
68
It's just ingrained in your subconscious.
69
So you don't even have to think about it.
70
Meaning that the way you gain skills is just through repetition.
71
But I do want to make an important distinction that repetition is not enough to gain a good skill.
72
Because you can practice something wrong a million times.
73
Take it from a ballerina.
74
Like, you can definitely practice something a hundred times the wrong way.
75
You definitely fucking can.
76
And all of your effort can be wasted
77
if you don't do it right the first time and learn how to do it right the first time.
78
And you can also become accidentally extremely efficient at doing something the wrong way.
79
Look at your habits, for example.
80
I bet there's probably, there's a lot of habits in my life
81
that I'm trying to change because I know that I'm practicing to become the person that I don't want to be
82
through these wrong actions.
83
And I bet there's pain points in your own life where you are practicing to be a person
84
that you don't actually want to be.
85
Because whether we are consciously or unconsciously aware, our life is literally just a set of tiny repetitions that we repeat every single day.
86
Like you wake up.
87
What do you do when you wake up?
88
Do you scroll on your phone?
89
Do you open the window?
90
Do you go outside?
91
What do you do?
92
You eat breakfast.
93
What do you eat for breakfast?
94
Do you change what you eat for breakfast?
95
What time do you eat breakfast?
96
Do you eat breakfast at a different time every day?
97
What's your morning routine?
98
What do you do during that?
99
Do you wash your face?
100
Do you shower?
101
What time do you get dressed?
102
You go to work.
103
You meet people.
104
What do you eat?
105
Where do you go?
106
Who do you talk to?
107
What do you do in your free time?
108
All these different little decisions.
109
Every single day we make like thousands to millions of decisions
110
and every single one of these decisions is turning us into the person that we will become.
111
You make choices, you avoid things, you do other things, you practice things, you return to the same thoughts, you return to the same people, you return to the same behaviors.
112
Repetition, repetition, repetition.
113
and eventually those repetitions turn into a life.
114
And there's a beautiful line from William James that says we are spinning our own fates, good or evil.
115
We choose our life with our actions, but sometimes we are practicing the person that we don't want to be.
116
Every day through these thousands or millions of decisions we make every single day, we are shaping who we are, either consciously or subconsciously.
117
And life isn't something that we just suddenly find ourselves living.
118
It's something that we consciously create every single day.
119
And every single step you are taking, every single thing you are doing is shaping you into who you want to be.
120
So look at yourself, not at your intentions, but what are you doing?
121
Do you like who you are?
122
Do you understand that every single thing you do is shaping who you become?
123
So if you wanna be a writer, write.
124
If you wanna be a dancer, dance.
125
If you wanna be strong, train.
126
If you wanna be knowledgeable, study.
127
If you want to be a writer, write.
128
If you want to be a dancer, dance.
129
If you want to be strong, train.
130
If you want to be knowledgeable, study.
131
If you want to be disciplined, then repeatedly do what you said you would do.
132
That is the only option.
133
And a lot of people want to think that, oh, maybe my intentions for who I want to be or where I want to go or what I want to become.
134
That's what matters.
135
Like my dreams, who I'm thinking of myself to be.
136
You are not who you think yourself to be.
137
You are what you fucking do, okay?
138
This, what's in your head, is not what's in reality.
139
This, these dreams you have, this vision you have, can become reality, but only if you get your ass fucking moving.
140
Someone who has sat around a lot and overthought her entire life
141
and lived in her head like it was its own separate fucking universe, I am telling you and I am begging of you at this very moment to just fucking do it.
142
Get up and go and do what you said you were going to do.
143
And here's the other side of the argument.
144
If we become what we repeatedly do, then our bad habits aren't insignificant.
145
The things we repeatedly avoid, the people we treated like shit, the excuses we repeatedly make, the hours we repeatedly wasted,
146
the thoughts we repeatedly entertained, those are also shaping us.
147
And you need to clear out the cobwebs of your mind.
148
You need to clear out the cobwebs of your actions and your habits.
149
And understand that every single habit you have either works for or against you, whether you're paying attention to it or not.
150
Every day you're practicing something.
151
The question isn't whether you're becoming someone.
152
The question is whether you're becoming that person intentionally and whether
153
that person who you are becoming is who you actually want to be.
154
And the goal isn't to become someone who occasionally does extraordinary things.
155
The goal is to become someone who extraordinary things are ordinary.
156
You don't build an amazing life through doing huge, over-the-top things once.
157
You build an amazing life by choosing to take the hard route,
158
by choosing to make those difficult decisions every single day by
159
choosing to take one step towards who you want to be when it would be so much easier to just hit snooze.
160
I hope we're having an amazing day, night, evening, wherever you are in the world.
161
I love you guys.
