I'm a little bit tired.
2
Why don't I like search for this artist or...
3
We are honored today to host a very special discussion delving into the profound role art plays in our daily lives.
4
First again I would like to introduce RM of 21st century pop icons BTS.
5
You can enter the stage in a second.
6
And as many of you know, BTS has not only dominated the music charts worldwide, but also garnered prestigious accolades.
7
Beyond his groundbreaking musical career with BTS and his impactful solo work, RM is renowned as an art enthusiast and a collector.
8
Celebrated for his insightful perspectives on art, he's also recognized as an Artnet art innovator
9
and a significant patron of the arts wielding considerable influence in the art world
10
and now please once again big up for RM
11
that was so long thank you it's going to be even longer
12
when we start a conversation with Sofia Monteiro next up the head curator for Samsung Europe's art store
13
and we are truly looking forward for this discussion please Sophia enter the stage
14
so now finally let's make this a dialogue
15
and stop the monologue from our side i'm very pleased to share the stage with both of you
16
and RM i would say we start with a very broad
17
question in the beginning how do you perceive the role of
18
art in your daily life we all know it's very important
19
but if you could elaborate a little bit on that actually
20
that is the hardest question um i think art is already
21
embedded in many aspects of our lives like you know for
22
example like you know like we know like literature architecture um cinemas and also music which i'm really included in
23
and um but
24
when we see art i think a lot of people a lot of audience think treated it like it's a
25
that's a very very um like a high level of something
26
but you know art is already here in our insides
27
and um i think it's everywhere
28
so you know we live in a building we listen to music
29
when we take a shower
30
so i just you know like before we start this session i just hope
31
that people just could be you know could realize like art
32
is everywhere in our lives yeah i completely agree with
33
that perspective and i actually think
34
that that's exactly what samsung art store is trying to do
35
it's to be subtle a subtle presence within someone's daily life
36
so whether you're coming back from work and you want to watch a movie
37
or maybe you want to come back from work
38
and put a an artwork on your tv maybe you're looking for something some peace of mind
39
and it's about that subtle involvement of art within your life.
40
I actually was thinking on the same topic as well, RM, what you just mentioned about kind of living with art.
41
Have you ever found yourself turning into art to find some escapism or some mental peace during a difficult time?
42
I think, you know, art is every basic things in life like eating and sleeping, right?
43
It's the next chapter of every basic levels of life, like living.
44
And I started, actually, I didn't start my career as music.
45
I started with literature.
46
And I just got into this genre called rap.
47
And I was really impressed that, you know, like some very romantic guys were saying like rap stands for rhythm and poetry.
48
So if I do rap, and this is also in literature, like poetry.
49
So that's how I started music.
50
BTS was, I've been doing this job as a professional musician for 12 years and I was,
51
sometimes I had my like barnouts and slums and I had plenty of time doing tours in Chicago.
52
My first museum was Chicago Art Institute and just an idea popped up in my mind,
53
why don't I just go to the museum and spend some time and see some maybe Monet or Gau.
54
And I was like shocked to see all of those details and textures of a real painting.
55
So I was really impressed.
56
And actually, especially for fine art, my mental piece is that I don't get jealous.
57
Like sometimes when I listen to like great musicians' albums, I get really jealous and I just can't be like objective.
58
But when I see the art or like Basel,
59
I just, I find peace because my drawing sucks and I'm not good at it at all.
60
So yeah, this is my personal thing.
61
Yeah, absolutely.
62
I think actually what you're saying is kind of a form of escapism, which is common for people who enjoy looking at art.
63
and yeah I believe that this is a crucial point
64
because what you're mentioning is kind of going to a museum or going to a gallery
65
whereas with Samsung Art Store you're able to do
66
that from home a little bit
67
and it can be a great entry point into art
68
so coming to
69
that realization of why don't I do this as often with Samsung Art TVs you're able to do
70
that on a daily basis and rotate it very frequently and connect with art in that way
71
I also just think it's important for art institutions
72
and technology to think about young people and how they are accessing art and finding mediums that resonate to them.
73
Would lead us to the next question, which fits kind of perfectly.
74
How do you think people can find emotional balance through art in their daily lives, even at home?
75
What does art provoke hates in your own home?
76
Like I said, a lot of people think that art is a hard thing and like you just need to study.
77
It's sort of true, right?
78
Once you get to know all the histories and the backgrounds and the narratives,
79
it's more of an intellectual experience and really, you know, interesting point.
80
But sometimes I just love the experience you just look at some random art piece
81
and you just love the colors and the details and the shells of the art piece.
82
And so in terms of that, you can, my starting point was just to display the posters of the movies
83
that I like or the like very cool exhibitions from the past, the posters.
84
I started with it and then I just jumped to the prints and etchings.
85
So, and we got this TV, actually I've used the frame for,
86
I've been using the frame for like three weeks and friends of mine, they know I'm an art lover and they just come to the house
87
and there's this wooden frame and they mistake it as a new media art.
88
So they just didn't know it was a TV.
89
So living with art, you know, just by the posters or maybe technology, I think we could, like you said,
90
it could be a bridge to access.
91
Because for a lot of people, a museum, a gallery, and what we call an art is a very, very, they think it's a very hard thing.
92
But I just tell, if you decide to live with art, you can live with the posters or technologies and prints.
93
And maybe that could be a really great entry just to be an art lover.
94
And art makes you happy.
95
I agree.
96
Beautiful as that.
97
Yeah, absolutely.
98
And I agree with what you're saying.
99
I think for a lot of our users who buy the frame, they're aesthetically driven, but they might feel intimidated by not knowing enough about art to engage with it
100
or to even like it.
101
What I love about Samsung Art Store is that it's visual first.
102
So it's similar to a gallery or a museum experience, where you see the visual you get drawn to it and then you can find out within the platform what it means.
103
And it might trigger those questions of who made this and why did they make it?
104
And yeah, that kind of also leads me to the next question, which is, have you ever found yourself looking deeper
105
into someone's work and building a strong connection to their work or their story?
106
Do you take that sort of inspiration?
107
Of course, it's really important.
108
But sometimes there are, since there are billions of artists, sometimes I'm just an art fan.
109
You know, when my life is really exhausting, I just sometimes just don't want to know everything.
110
But mostly, I really prefer to study the backgrounds and the narratives
111
if I really like the art piece because like I said, it's a very whole new kind of experience.
112
But I just want to tell the people, you just don't have to do it every time.
113
Like there's a pressure, you have to be really aware of everything,
114
but it's been only like seven years since I've got into this art world.
115
But maybe there are maybe like 50,
116
70 artists that I really can tell the people that I sort of know.
117
But, you know, there are more than millions of artists that you just can't figure out.
118
So I just hope the people just have the chance to just look at it
119
and just why don't I like search for this artist or why did this guy paint this thing?
120
Like sort of that.
121
You said it very nice.
122
Art makes me happy.
123
this as a quote I really love it.
124
It makes me happy.
125
That's true.
126
It's wonderful.
127
Besides that and besides knowing more about the artists,
128
what motivates you to explore art through physical visits or digital platforms different?
129
Seven years ago, since I told you my art experience started from Chicago and I just,
130
I didn't think, I never expected like this kind of experience like
131
because art um going to the museums and galleries was just a hobby
132
and now i became an ambassador for some art tv
133
and i just can't say i don't know much things about
134
art i use my instagram um you know i like
135
if i like it i share it there's there's no any kinds of like political
136
or like profitable relationship between my Instagram feed or story and some,
137
you know, all the political things.
138
Just like if I really like it, I just want to show the people.
139
And very thankfully, fans really take it serious and they go to the museums I've uploaded.
140
They share the pieces.
141
And they really, it's been seven years and they really, A lot of people started to really take it serious.
142
So I'm really grateful for that.
143
It's a wonderful experience to be a person like that.
144
So what I'm trying to say is that my Instagram curation,
145
it's not a curation, I mean like my Instagram feed was like the RTV.
146
So they, I don't know all of their backgrounds, but they
147
were able to approach a different artist like even Korean by my Instagram
148
and it's been seven years
149
so like I was like thinking am I am I being
150
too stubborn for art like I have my own taste I have my own kind of color
151
but this art stream system
152
and RTV showed me a lot of different artists like from all over the world like like the scene
153
and it was a really cool experience to look back on my prejudice or my stubborn taste
154
individually personally yeah yeah so uh so shortly in short sorry i'm too talkative and um It's wonderful.
155
This digital platform is a,
156
I think, seriously, I think it's a great bridge to approach art because a lot of people, maybe most of the people in the world,
157
they don't have the cultural like environments.
158
Like especially in Korea, if you don't live in Seoul,
159
you just really, it's not easy to go to the museums or galleries to see the art piece.
160
And maybe same for a lot of the rest of the world.
161
So I think you start with digital platforms
162
and maybe you plan for your visit to the museums or the galleries or your favorite artists.
163
I think it's a beautiful process to be an art man.
164
Yeah, absolutely.
165
I agree with that.
166
I mean, it resonates to that as well because I didn't grow up in a city where art was very accessible.
167
But if you live in cities like Paris, New York, London, you can see exhibitions.
168
But millions of our users don't get that type of access.
169
Of course not.
170
So that's really where technology can come in and help with that.
171
On the topic of curation, maybe, Aram, you're well known as a curator yourself.
172
Maybe.
173
Maybe.
174
You will become even more famous as a curator.
175
What challenges do you face curating art for your personal space?
176
and how could you already mentioned a little bit
177
but how could technology um address these challenges
178
that you have i'm not a curator um i didn't have my major in art history
179
or something i'm just an art fan
180
but i think in 2025 everybody could be a curator by their instagram like you see the feed
181
and that's your gallery that's your own space the gallery started from like like galleries start from corridors
182
and it's really fun to watch people like trying to show their taste
183
like their it's you know it's like a it's like an
184
individual branding for every people my challenge is um i really want to build a personal personal space um in
185
so like i don't know maybe in five years i'm seriously looking for a place to build it
186
but um i just want to bring Actually, in my perspective, I don't think there are not much museums
187
or places or spaces that you can like aesthetically or like appreciate.
188
So in the future, I just want to bring the keywords together that are really important,
189
like maybe personality and universality and east and west and old and new, all those things.
190
I just want to bring them together in my perspective because I'm not a museum curator or an art historian.
191
So I think if I do it, it's going to be more fresh.
192
And I don't have any relationship with those critical any sort of things.
193
I just want to show the people, you know, in a young man way,
194
art outsider, I mean like fine art outsider.
195
And I don't think it's going to be really possible to bring all the keywords together, but I'll do my best.
196
I think that sounds great.
197
I actually think that's exactly what platforms like us try to do.
198
Most people have visual instincts already.
199
They know what they like.
200
And our job as curators is really to serve as art for them.
201
And that's what we do with Samsung Art Store, is to just try to play with these elements of discoverability.
202
Our job is not to tell people what to like, but to just expose them to art and give them the access to view works, as you said, from all over the world.
203
You want to continue with your question?
204
I think you have one that's really important for you.
205
Yeah, I was going to ask as well, you're an artist yourself, and I was going to ask, what type of features do you think platforms like Samsung Art Store
206
and digital platforms can do in order to make the art experience more rich for users and for artists themselves as well?
207
In 2020 like all we know Covid happened
208
and there were a lot of things like metaverse and and maybe you guys all remember all those AI things,
209
and like metaverse exhibitions, all those things.
210
I didn't really, I didn't enjoy it that much
211
because I really think the personal direct three-dimensional experience is really important
212
but it's just my answer is the same digital platform could
213
be a really cool access you know like these days alpha generation they all just want to be like youtubers
214
or like influencers and they are really close with the technology.
215
So if you have your own frame in your living room,
216
like I'm doing, it's really a fun experience to actually buy an art piece.
217
It was sort of different.
218
And I'm really sure that these platforms could really help the open another world for our people and also,
219
you know, not our people just to have the have an access for the art world.
220
Yeah, absolutely.
221
I think you've mentioned also art streams as a way of discovering art and discovering new artists through the platform.
222
And that's exactly what we try to do with kind of the access to technology in the art space.
223
It's really feature artworks that haven't been exposed and with the art streams for us, we do monthly curations.
224
We focus a lot on season, team, mood, that are very easily reachable to all users.
225
Everyone can relate to mood and season.
226
And a lot of the times what we do with Samsung Art Store is
227
that we try to do curation that is approachable.
228
So, for example, we'll do, let's say, Spring Abstracted because Spring is an easy team for users.
229
However, abstract or conceptual art can be quite difficult to grasp.
230
So we find ways to make curation quite friendly so that
231
when you go into the curation itself you're able to relate easy
232
and and then really enjoy more from the art piece itself.
233
I think what many people here wonder and me as well is
234
if you have of course you have
235
but what kind of art you have displayed in your home
236
maybe on your frame could you give us a little insight maybe some tips what you would display?
237
I can't give you any insights because I'm just a, I'm not that insightful person.
238
I'm actually, I, me personally, I prefer the very traditional media like paintings and sculptures and drawings.
239
But that's because I live in a pop music industry,
240
which is really fast and hectic and it really got consoled and pieced and comforted by the,
241
what we say, like, modernists or the attitudes for those old people, actually, because, like, this industry is,
242
like, so fast and, like, consuming.
243
And, but as a young artist, I'm 30 years old, I feel sometimes,
244
like, responsible just to, like what's really happening in 2025
245
because the future is theirs like the generation z and alpha
246
so i i do study and like you said i do study in spotify too
247
because my algorithm tells me like yo it's tuesday morning
248
and it's cloudy you better listen to um radiohead or party shed Or, you know, maybe it's Friday night.
249
It's the sky's clear.
250
Maybe you should listen to techno, Fred again, Fortet.
251
So, but a system like our stream,
252
you just, it breaks the borders and tells me all those new artists like that I'd never known.
253
So, I think it's great.
254
I hope that another, the other music platforms have like some system like that to to study.
255
There's so many topics we would love to cover
256
but time is running so I suggest Sophia we would skip maybe to the last two questions from from your side.
257
Great.
258
I love.
259
Yeah absolutely.
260
We were curious about your art space in Seoul
261
and would like to know if that's gonna involve a mix of music and art.
262
Yeah I just gave you a hint
263
but there is a Korean saying called It means to be modest yet refined and to be elegant without being excessive.
264
I just wanted to be a place that where anyone else can come in,
265
feel at ease and experience its beauty.
266
And I also hope it can be a space where Korean artists feel really proud of.
267
Because I found my Korean blood once I got into the American music industry.
268
So I just want to connect my personal identity with that eventually, I guess.
269
Yeah, absolutely.
270
I can totally see that echoing through your work as well.
271
Korean art is known for so much depth and discipline.
272
So yeah that's pretty much the last question.
273
Thank you very much.
274
Awesome thank you RM.
275
It was truly an insightful conversation and to learn all of this was really really nice.
276
Your profound influence on art.
277
It's really really really nice and how art is part of our life.
278
I really take away art makes me happy
279
and I think this is really what it's about and bringing
280
that happiness to our home through The Frame and Samsung RTV is an amazing opportunity.
281
I'd like to extend my sincere gratitude
282
that you took the time after your military service to come here
283
and show up in front of all of these people and gracing us with your presence.
284
Thank you very much.
285
A big round of applause for RM.
286
All makes me happy.
