1
Hello everyone!
2
Welcome to our super podcast.
3
I'm Maria.
4
And my name is Rory.
5
And we are the hosts of the IELTS Speaking for Success podcast.
6
A podcast that aims to help you improve your speaking skills as well as your listening skills along the way.
7
Right.
8
The reason we started this podcast is to give you a
9
look at how a native English speaker speaker would answer some of the IELTS speaking test questions.
10
I'll be asking some of these questions and Rory will be answering them.
11
We really hope that you take away as much as possible from every episode.
12
This episode is about robots.
13
So Rory, you've chosen to talk about robots because in speaking part one they actually can ask you questions about robots.
14
My first question is what do you think of robots?
15
I think robots are wonderful.
16
They seem to be great labor-saving devices.
17
You can, well now they are at the very least, you can bring them into your home
18
and they can do all kinds of tasks for you
19
that you never had before you would have to do just by yourself.
20
So it's great for saving time for saving yourself as well.
21
So I think the more we have of robots in the home, the better.
22
So you're positive about robots?
23
Very.
24
Wow, okay.
25
Did you watch any cartoons related to robots in your childhood?
26
I think so.
27
I don't remember anything specifically about robots, but something that was connected to it was a program called Button Moon,
28
which was, again, not a cartoon, but it was a stop motion kind of animation.
29
And they had a robot on that show.
30
So it's kind of similar to it.
31
It's probably not a very good one, though.
32
I can remember it creeped me out a lot when I was a child.
33
Hmm, okay.
34
Do you like the idea of robots helping you at home or driving your car?
35
Oh, yes, both.
36
Like I said, I think they're great for saving time and saving your labor so you can focus on other things.
37
I just wish we had more of them and they were better developed.
38
This is for the home of course, but when it comes to driving my car, I'm not so sure just right now if I want them to do that.
39
I know they're testing this, but I would like to see them
40
tested a little bit more before I trusted my life in the hands of a robot.
41
Rory, would you like to have a robot? Would I?
42
Yes, absolutely.
43
Like I say, as many as possible.
44
Wow, so if you had like 10 robots at home, you'd be very happy.
45
Yes, as long as they were doing different jobs.
46
If I paid for 10 robots to do the same job, then that would be a waste of money.
47
Isn't it a bit scary to have like 10 robots at home?
48
If you're as lazy as I am, I find it quite reassuring.
49
Super.
50
Rory, thank you very much for your answers.
51
So, dear listeners, let's have a look at some of the vocabulary and grammar Rory has used.
52
that gives him a good score, possibly band 8, band 9 in IELTS.
53
So Rory, for example, you've said labour saving device.
54
Yeah, it's like a compound, compound adjective, I suppose, really, that you can use to describe things that mean that you don't have to work.
55
So something else will work instead of you.
56
Something can be labour saving.
57
More common than labour saving is time saving, so something that stops you from spending time on something that you don't want to.
58
Right.
59
Also, you've used a phrasal verb like creep me out.
60
Creep me out.
61
Could you make a sentence with this?
62
Absolutely.
63
Now being in a car driven by a robot would creep me out.
64
So, for example, with this phrasal verb in particular means that something would make me very nervous, very uncomfortable.
65
Yes, it's a good one, like band 9 phrasal verb.
66
Also about grammar, you've used some of the passive structures, like what's connected, right?
67
Also, you've used a nice one, I wish we had.
68
Yes, absolutely.
69
So, to talk about things that, well, hopefully will happen in the future or that I would like to happen in the future.
70
Definitely when it comes to robots, I would like to see much more development with them.
71
Yeah, so we can say like, oh I wish I had a robot at home.
72
Yes, absolutely.
73
So we can use the second conditional, if everyone had a robot at home, they'd be super happy.
74
Yes, absolutely.
75
Or if I had ten robots at home, I'd save a lot of time.
76
Absolutely.
77
Yeah, and Rory wants to have ten robots, exactly ten robots at home.
78
Dear listeners, could you think of your answers to these questions?
79
So would you like to have a robot?
80
Did you watch any cartoons about robots?
81
Because this is well a common topic obviously in IELTS speaking.
82
Rory, thank you very much for your answers.
83
Now dear listeners, you can listen to Rory's answers again and notice all the advanced structures and vocabulary.
84
What do you think of robots?
85
I think robots are wonderful.
86
They seem to be great labor-saving devices.
87
You can, well, now they are at the very least.
88
You can bring them into your home
89
and they can do all kinds of tasks for you
90
that you never had before you would have to do just by yourself.
91
So it's great for saving time, for saving yourself as well.
92
So I think the more we have of robots in the home, the better.
93
Did you watch any cartoons related to robots in your childhood?
94
I think so.
95
I don't remember anything specifically about robots, but something that was connected to it was a program called Button Moon,
96
which was, again, not a cartoon, but it was a stop motion kind of animation.
97
And they had a robot on that show.
98
So it's kind of similar to it.
99
It's probably not a very good one, though.
100
I can remember it creeped me out a lot when I was a child.
101
Do you like the idea of robots helping you at home or driving your car?
102
Oh yes, both.
103
Like I said, I think they're great for saving time and saving your labor so you can focus on other things.
104
I just wish we had more of them and they were better developed.
105
This is for the home, of course, but when it comes to driving my car, I'm not so sure just right now if I want them to do that.
106
I know they're testing this, but I would like to see them tested a little bit
107
more before I trusted my life in the hands of a robot.
108
So, thank you all for listening.
109
Thank you very much for your attention, and we'll see you soon.
110
Bye-bye.
111
Bye.
