1
Hello and welcome to the weather report.
2
I'm your weatherman Maddy.
3
Let's take a look at today's weather prediction.
4
It looks like we have a mixed bag of weather today.
5
In the morning we might expect some light showers and drizzle
6
so you might want to take your broly with you or you can just get soaked.
7
It's up to you.
8
There might also be some gusts of wind so hold on to your hats or your wig if you have one.
9
In the afternoon the sun will come out and it will be mild and humid.
10
There will be a nice breeze to cool you down or to make you sweat even more depending on how you feel.
11
However, watch out for some thunder and lightning in the evening as a storm is approaching.
12
It will pour down and there might be some hail as well.
13
If you go out, look out for the puddles the storm will last until night
14
when it will clear up
15
and become foggy tomorrow we can expect a sunny day with no rain
16
or maybe not who knows what are all these words what
17
do they mean hello my name is maddie from poc english
18
and in this lesson we're going to learn some advanced weather
19
vocabulary we all know what rain is right however rain can
20
have different forms one form of rain is drizzle drizzle when it rains very lightly for example
21
i don't need an umbrella today it's only drizzling it's only
22
drizzling i do not need an umbrella Another form of rain is
23
when it starts raining heavily for a very short period of time and then stops.
24
This happens a lot here in Milan.
25
You're walking on the street.
26
Everything is normal.
27
It's perfectly sunny.
28
But all of a sudden, it starts raining very heavily for 15 seconds.
29
This is called shower for example we had a shower this morning
30
but now it's sunny do not confuse this with shower taking a shower washing yourself now
31
when it's raining or drizzling or
32
when you have a shower in your town what do you
33
need you need an umbrella right however in british we have a very interesting informal word for umbrella
34
which is broly broly have you taken your broly today don't forget your broly
35
if you're going out it might rain now imagine you go outside
36
and you forget to take your broly with you you're walking
37
and then suddenly it starts raining what will happen to you you will become all wet
38
or you'll be soaked soaked to be soaked means to be completely wet.
39
For example, I got soaked in the rain.
40
I need to change my clothes.
41
Now, let me teach you another form of rain.
42
This one is a phrasal verb.
43
Pour down.
44
Now, what does pour mean?
45
Imagine you have a glass full of water.
46
Then you tilt the glass and then the water starts pouring down
47
and that's where this phrasal verb comes from
48
if it's pouring down it means it's raining heavily as
49
if somebody's up there with a bucket
50
and is pouring down the rain oh look it's pouring down
51
outside we cannot go to the park it's pouring down now
52
pour down was a phrasal verb we actually have a noun
53
for it downpour what is downpour it's exactly the same thing
54
but instead of a phrasal verb it's a noun downpour downpour means
55
when it rains very heavily for a long period of time
56
for example we had a downpour yesterday the streets are flooded flooded means full of water
57
and here's a very fun and informal word spit you know what spit is it's
58
when you do this you throw your saliva it's not a
59
good thing is it no however spit has another meaning too it means
60
when it rains lightly for a short period of time
61
that is called spit it's as
62
if somebody's up there is spitting on us for example it's just spitting a bit
63
but it's not too bad you don't need your brulee
64
when it's spitting do you get soaked no when it's spitting outside do you need to take your brolly?
65
No!
66
and now let me give you a very interesting idiom for
67
rain the heavens open you know what heaven is right some people believe
68
that if you are a good person
69
and you die you will go to heaven now here is
70
the phrase the heavens open it means up there the doors of heaven are open
71
so water is coming down the heavens open means to rain
72
very much to rain a lot now to talk about the
73
past tense you can say the heavens opened for example we were having a picnic
74
when the heavens opened and we got soaked we were having a picnic the heavens opened
75
and we got soaked now imagine the heavens opened yesterday and now it's not raining.
76
There is a clear sky and it's sunny.
77
But if you go outside, you will see small pools of water on the street.
78
What are they called?
79
These pools of water are called puddles.
80
One puddle, two puddles, three puddles.
81
What happens
82
if you step into a puddle? your feet will get soaked
83
the kids jumped in the puddles after the rain the kids
84
jumped in the puddles after the rain they were playing around
85
okay enough with the rain let's talk about the wind we know what the wind is right
86
but wind can also have different forms the first word we're going to learn is gust what's a gust
87
when the wind blows very strongly for a short period of time out of a sudden everything is okay
88
but suddenly and then it stops that is a gust
89
or a gust of wind for example oh look a gust
90
of wind knocked over the trash can opposite of a gust
91
of wind is breeze what's a breeze breeze is very enjoyable breeze is when wind blows but gently and slowly it's like
92
and then you are enjoying it it's all in your hair
93
and then you're just enjoying it
94
that is a breeze let's open the windows there's a nice
95
breeze today now let's talk about the weather now the weather
96
can have different forms however i'm just going to talk about three
97
which can be a bit challenging for students number one is mild
98
but what is a mild weather when the weather is not very cold
99
or very hot we can say it's mild so when the weather is mild is it enjoyable yes
100
is it pleasant yes
101
because it's mild is it too cold no is it too
102
hot no it's mild it's mild today i don't need to wear a jacket it's mild today
103
and i don't need to wear a jacket next
104
what do we call a type of weather in
105
which there is just too much water in the air it's humid humid
106
when the air is moist or damp which means full of water we call that humid for example it's very humid today.
107
I feel sweaty.
108
And next is when you cannot see the distance very clearly.
109
Why?
110
Because it's foggy.
111
Foggy.
112
What does it mean?
113
When there is a thick mist in the air, that white thing like a cloud, it's in the air and you cannot see very clearly.
114
That's foggy. For example, I'm not going to drive today because it's foggy
115
and it's dangerous all right now let's talk about extreme weather conditions oh
116
but before we continue have you downloaded my ultimate english booklet oh yes you can do

125
and you will receive the link all right let's get back to the lesson
126
and talk about extreme weather conditions the first word we're going to learn is a tornado tornado
127
but what is a tornado a tornado is a powerful windstorm
128
that goes around it's also called a cyclone for example there was a tornado warning on tv yesterday
129
and we had to go to the basement
130
another type of extreme weather condition is a hurricane hurricane
131
but what is it it's a very big storm with strong winds
132
and rain that comes from the ocean so
133
if your town is next to the ocean you may have hurricanes there is a hurricane coming this weekend
134
so we have to be careful now another type of weather is
135
when you have wind but instead of rain you have snow
136
and that is called a blizzard blizzard
137
when there is a lot of strong wind and snow that's a blizzard for example
138
there was a blizzard last night schools are closed today so i think students are very happy
139
now in many types of extreme weather conditions you will hear a sound like
140
and you will see a light in the sky what is that called well the light is called a lightning
141
and the sound is called a thunder so thunder
142
and lightning many people are afraid of thunder
143
and lightning how about you are you afraid of it now we know what rain is
144
and we know what snow is
145
but sometimes ice comes down from the sky it's in the shape of a little circle little ball
146
and it can cause damage but what is
147
that called it's called hail now as a noun hail means the little ice balls
148
that fall from the sky it can cause damage sometimes they
149
are in the size of tennis ball as a verb it means the falling of all those little ice balls
150
so hail is noun and a verb just like snow just like rain it hailed yesterday
151
and it damaged a lot of cars
152
and that's it guys i hope you've enjoyed this lesson please
