1
Hello everyone, my name is Dylan and welcome to another interactive speaking exercise.
2
So today we are going to be using the shadowing technique to help improve your British English speaking
3
and pronunciation whilst helping you to train your modern RP British accent.
4
Brilliant.
5
So how does it work?
6
Well, I will start by telling you a completely true story about the time I was robbed by a gang of ducks.
7
Yeah so I'll tell you this same story three times.
8
For the first time all you need to do is sit back listen and enjoy.
9
For the second time you will listen again but after each sentence you will repeat what I have just said.
10
Now for this part it's important to try and copy my voice exactly.
11
It's the small details you need to focus on in order to really improve your British English accent and speaking abilities.
12
Finally for the third part we will actually be reading the story together at the same time
13
and this is the shadowing technique.
14
Now it is a bit of a challenge however
15
if you can do this it means
16
that you are able to perfectly imitate a natural British speaker
17
which of course means that you are also speaking in a natural British accent.
18
So feel free to repeat steps two
19
and three as many times as you need to before moving on And there's no rush.
20
Don't worry
21
if you make any mistakes I'm not going to send a duck over to your house to eat you
22
or something like that No, this is just a chance for us to have a bit of fun
23
And for you to develop your speaking skills and your accent as well So enjoy the video and good luck Sorry guys,
24
I forgot to mention but I have also made a completely free PDF to go with this lesson.
25
So it includes the full story, loads of pronunciation tips, the phonetics for each word, where the schwa's are, what the linking patterns are,
26
plus a breakdown of all the vocabulary and expressions that I used.
27
It's actually a really good PDF to be honest and it will massively help you to sound so much more British.
28
The link to that is in the top comment.
29
It's completely free, all you need to do is hit the link, enter your email and I will instantly send it to you.
30
You will then also be signed up to my hilarious weekly Tuesday newsletter
31
and I will even send you a bonus video as a thank you.
32
Right, enjoy the story.
33
Let me tell you a crazy story.
34
My tale began on a Saturday morning in England.
35
The sun was shining and I was in the mood to go on an adventure.
36
So I showered up, got changed, and headed out to my local park.
37
Upon arrival, I couldn't help but appreciate how peaceful this place was.
38
Everything felt so nice and calm and relaxed.
39
Well, that was until the once perfect silence was smashed by a deafening scream.
40
As adrenaline surged through my body, I ran towards the noise to investigate.
41
I whipped out my trusty binoculars and started searching for clues.
42
And after just 10 seconds I spotted something extremely alarming in the distance.
43
That must have been what caused the scream, I thought to myself.
44
Wasting no time I dropped my binoculars and started sprinting towards my discovery.
45
I was nearly there when suddenly I hit the floor and everything went black.
46
Someone or something had tripped me up.
47
Once I eventually regained consciousness, I saw them for the first time.
48
The beasts that had caused the scream.
49
As they loomed over me, I could see the menace in their eyes.
50
These were not friendly ducks.
51
These were criminal ducks.
52
The next thing I knew, the two thugs were going into my pockets, robbing me of everything I had.
53
After successfully stealing my phone, laptop, wallet, passport and dignity, they started waddling off to freedom.
54
They were far too fast for me to chase, so I had to let them go.
55
And that's the story of how I was robbed by a gang of ducks.
56
Honestly, that story took a lot of courage for me to tell.
57
Anyway, time to move on to part two.
58
Here I will read the story again, but after each sentence you just need to repeat what I have just said.
59
Now for this section it's really important to try and copy exactly how I say it.
60
you wish to really train your modern RP British accent.
61
As I've said many times before, an accent is like a song and it's important to hit the right notes.
62
Now feel free to do this section as many times as you need to, just until you feel confident that you sound exactly like I do.
63
There's no rush and you can also play it at a slower speed if it helps.
64
Good Good luck!
65

88
Right guys, it is now time for the third and final section, the shadowing technique.
89
Here we'll be reading the story together at the same time.
90
Now, as mentioned, this is quite a challenging part of the video, so take as long as you need to.
91
And you can also go and replay part two as many times as you like
92
which will make this section a lot easier.
93
So try to copy my voice exactly and don't worry if you make any mistakes.
94
It's actually a good thing.

121
That shows your actually learning something.
