1
Hi, I'm Siobhan Miller.
2
I'm the founder of The Positive Birth Company.
3
I'm a hypnobirthing teacher and mum of three and I am on a mission to make hypnobirthing more accessible for everyone.
4
Today I'm going to share with you my five top tips for a positive and empowering birth.
5
So my first tip is breathing.
6
I don't even know how people get through birth without a breathing technique.
7
It is so important and is going to make the biggest difference.
8
So to keep it really simple,
9
I teach two breathing techniques.
10
Up breathing for the up stage of labour
11
when the uterus muscles are drawing up and the cervix is dilating
12
and then down breathing for the down stage of labour where the muscles are pushing down and you're birthing your baby.
13
My second top tip is environment.
14
You cannot underestimate how important the environment is.
15
So whether you're giving birth at home,
16
at a birth centre or on a labour ward,
17
make sure that you have planned for it
18
and you are able to create a calming and relaxing space for you to give birth in.
19
My third top tip is having a birth partner.
20
Someone that you can trust,
21
who knows what your birth preferences are,
22
who is able to advocate for you and ensure your wishes are respected.
23
One of my favourite affirmations is my birth partner is by my side and on my side.
24
Now it doesn't matter if that birth partner is a boyfriend,
25
a husband, a mum, an auntie,
26
a sister or a friend.
27
Just make sure that you've got someone you trust who is with you in labour.
28
My fourth top tip is positive reinforcement.
29
So a lot of what we teach in hypnobirthing is about removing the fear around birth
30
because we want you to be relaxed the more relaxed you are the easier your birth will be
31
so really work on removing that fear in the weeks leading up to giving birth
32
and the best way of doing
33
that is through positive reinforcement feed your brain the positive messages
34
so through positive affirmations positive birth videos birth stories birth photography make sure that you're giving that input,
35
that positive input.
36
So what you associate with birth is all the amazing stories
37
that you've read or the videos you've seen or the incredible photos.
38
Make sure that you feel confident and excited for your birth.
39
My fifth top tip is be informed.
40
Be in a position where you can make informed decisions that are right for you and your baby.
41
Avoid getting swept up in what I call the conveyor belt of care.
42
So be able to navigate your birth,
43
be able to ask the right questions to Make sure that however your birth pans out,
44
because it can pan out in many different ways,
45
and you might not end up with the birth that you had expected.
46
But you can still have a positive and empowering experience however you give birth.
47
If you feel like you were in control,
48
you knew why these things were being suggested,
49
and you were agreeing to them.
50
So take back that control.
51
The only person responsible for your birth is you.
52
So make sure you're in a position to make informed decisions.
53
I've made videos on all these topics so
