One interesting building I'd like to describe is an old train station in my city

that has been converted into a public library.

It's located near the city center, close to the main bus terminal, so it's very accessible.

What makes it stand out is its architecture.

The building is over a hundred years old and the city preserved many of the original features.

The exterior is made of red brick and there's a large clock above the entrance.

Inside, the ceilings are very high with exposed steel beams and part of the old railway track

is still visible under a glass panel in the main hall so you can clearly see its historical roots

They're not sure what kind of vocabulary sounds natural when describing a building.

So before we finish, let's go through some useful phrases you can actually use for this topic.

I'll organise them into four key areas, location, appearance, function and explaining why it's interesting.

When describing location, avoid simply saying it's in my city.

Try to be slightly more specific.

For example, instead of saying it's in the city centre, you could say it's located in the heart of the city within walking distance of the main square.

If it's in a residential area, you might say it's situated in a quiet neighbourhood near the university

and if you want to explain why the location matters you can add a reason such as

it's easily accessible by public transport which makes it popular with students.

This helps you expand naturally rather than giving short answers.

When describing appearance details make a big difference.

Instead of saying it looks nice try something more specific such as

it has a red brick exterior and a large clock above the entrance.

If it's modern, you could say it has a sleek contemporary design with floor-to-ceiling windows.

If it's older, you might say it features traditional architecture and has been well preserved.

Adding two or three concrete details, like high ceilings, exposed beams or warm lighting, makes your description much more vivid and natural.

For function, you want to clearly explain what happens inside the building.

Instead of saying, it's a library, you could say, it serves as a public library and community space.

If the building has changed purpose, you might say, it has been converted into a cultural centre.

If it has more than one role, phrases like multi-purpose space or community hub are very useful.

For example, it operates as a cafe during the day but also hosts workshops and live music events in the evening.

This shows flexibility and allows you to extend your answer naturally.

Finally, let's look at language you can use to explain why the building's interesting.

A simple and effective way to start is with phrases like What makes it stand out is...

or What fascinates me most is...

These expressions clearly signal that you're about to explain your main idea.
