8
Let's dive in and start learning.
9
Today's topic is asking for directions, a very useful skill for travelers, students, or anyone new in town.
10
This lesson is perfect for A2-B1 learners.
11
We'll follow Lisa, who is visiting a new city for a job interview, and her friend Tom, who lives there.
12
They meet by chance and talk about how to get to a local museum.
13
Lisa, is that you?
14
Tom?
15
Wow, what are the chances?
16
I didn't expect to see you here.
17
Yo, I live just around the corner.
18
Are you visiting?
19
Yes.
20
I have a job interview this afternoon, but I came early to visit the city museum.
21
And now, I'm totally lost.
22
Oh, the museum?
23
Don't worry, it's easy to find.
24
I think I'm on King Street, near a bakery, but I can't see any signs for the museum.
25
Yeah, from King Street walk straight for about five minutes.
26
You'll pass a pharmacy and a small park on your left.
27
All right, straight ahead, past the pharmacy and the park.
28
Exactly.
29
When you see the traffic lights turn left onto Main Avenue, the museum is just past the bus stop on your right.
30
It's a big white building with tall columns.
31
Turn left at the lights, and it's after the bus stop on the right.
32
Got it?
33
If you reach the train station, you've gone too far.
34
But don't worry, it's hard to miss.
35
Thanks, Tom.
36
I was really confused.
37
My map app wasn't working.
38
No problem at all.
39
Oh, and if you have time after your interview, there's a great cafe across from the museum.
40
Sounds perfect.
41
Maybe I'll treat myself to coffee if the interview goes well.
42
Good luck.
43
You've got this.
44
Now, let's look at some useful vocabulary and phrases from Lisa and Tom's conversation.
45
1. Lost.
46
If you're lost, it means you don't know where you are or how to get to the place you want.
47
Maybe you took a wrong turn, or your map isn't helping.
48
You just feel unsure where to go.
49
2. Pass.
50
A place.
51
To pass a place means you go by it, but you don't stop there.
52
You keep walking or driving and the place is behind you.
53
3. Turn left, turn right.
54
We use these when giving directions.
55
Turn left means go to the left side when the road splits or you reach a corner.
56
Turn right means go to the right.
57
4. On your left, on your right.
58
When you're walking or driving, this tells you which side something is on.
59
Left side or right side.
60
It helps people find places more easily.
61
5. Past If something is past another place, it means you'll find it after that place.
62
So if someone says, The bank is past the supermarket, you keep going until the bank comes after the supermarket.
63
6. Across from This means something is directly opposite another place, usually with a road or space in between.
64
For example, a park can be across from a school.
65
You can see it from the other side.
66
7. Walk straight.
67
Go straight.
68
Straight ahead.
69
These all mean the same thing.
70
Keep moving forward without turning.
71
People use them when they want you to stay on the same path or road.
72
8. Traffic light.
73
This is the red, yellow, and green light at the street corner that controls cars and people.
74
It tells you when to stop and when to go.
75
9. Confused If you're confused, you don't understand something, or you're not sure what to do.
76
You might feel this way if directions are unclear or if you're in a place you don't know.
77
When you want to ask for directions, it's polite to start by getting someone's attention and asking for help.
78
Here are some common and useful ways to ask where a place is or how to get there.
79
1. Excuse me, can you help me?
80
I'm looking for the place.
81
2. Hi, do you know how to get to the place?
82
3. Can you tell me the way to the place?
83
4. Is this the right way to the place?
84
5. How can I get to the place from here?
85
6. Can I walk there from here?
86
7. Is it far from here?
87
8. How long does it take to walk there?
88
9. Could you repeat that, please?
89
10. Can you show me on the map?
90
11. Would you mind pointing it out?
91
