1
Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about change.
2
Change is all around us.
3
People change.
4
Trees change.
5
Even something like your house will change over time.
6
A rock out in the wilderness will slowly change as the weather ages it.
7
So we are surrounded by things that change and we ourselves also change over time.
8
So I thought I would do an English lesson about the verbs we use to talk about change.
9
In this lesson, I'll look at a number of different verbs.
10
I think about 25 verbs.
11
And I will give you a nice picture, an example sentence, and a definition, of course, of what it means.
12
And I'll talk about each one for about a minute.
13
So once again, welcome to this English lesson about change. To change.
14
So this is the general verb meaning to become different or to make something different.
15
So something can change over time, but you can also change something by what you do.
16
So here we have the classic example.
17
The leaves on the trees will change throughout the season.
18
So I'm going to have another sip of water here just so that I can keep talking for an hour.
19
This might not happen in your part of the world, but in my part of the world,
20
we have four distinct seasons and the trees will change.
21
the leaves will change.
22
It hasn't quite started happening yet, but in about two or three weeks,
23
the leaves on the trees will change because it is the season of fall.
24
To change, to become different or to make something different.
25
And your example sentence, the leaves on the trees will change throughout the seasons.
26
I tried to write example sentences for this lesson that were a little more complex.
27
You'll probably notice that.
28
I usually write very simple examples, but this time I tried to up the difficulty slightly just to challenge you.
29
To change into.
30
The same verb, but now we have into at the end.
31
It kind of has the same meaning, but not exactly.
32
Here's the description.
33
For something to become different from what it was before.
34
And to me, this is the classic example.
35
The caterpillar will change into a butterfly.
36
Sometimes we just say change to, like the caterpillar will change to a butterfly, but it sounds better to me if we use into,
37
and I think that is the most correct way to say it.
38
The caterpillar will change into a butterfly, and this does happen quite regularly on our farm.
39
In fact, when you walk out at certain times of the year, you will see caterpillars eating Jen's plants.
40
And then eventually you will see them make a cocoon and a butterfly or a moth sometimes will come out.
41
To turn into, to change and become something different.
42
So the rain will turn into snow later today.
43
Again, sometimes we just say to, the rain will turn to snow later today.
44
And you can even use change into for this.
45
Sometimes they're interchangeable, like the rain will turn into snow, the rain will turn to snow,
46
the rain will change to snow or change into snow.
47
This happens to us later this fall.
48
There will be days where you get up and it's raining
49
and then eventually the rain will turn into snow because it gets colder as the day goes by.
50
To become, to begin to be something different over time.
51
I really struggled writing this definition because when you become something, it can happen quickly or it can take a long time,
52
but it's not instant necessarily, at least the way I think about it.
53
As a child gets older, they become more mature.
54
They stop behaving like a child because they become more like an adult.
55
So it's something that takes time.
56
He went back to school to become a doctor.
57
this doesn't happen instantly he needs to spend a number of
58
years at school hopefully to become a doctor you can also
59
say something like well the day is going to become quite hot
60
so it's not instant but over a few hours the temperature will change
61
so to become to begin to be something different over time to transform to change something greatly in appearance form or character
62
this has been suggested in the comments many time many times
63
that Jen and I should do this
64
so they transform the old barn into a beautiful banquet hall
65
so you can see by the beams and the walls
66
that this is probably an old barn but they've decided to transform it
67
so instead of being a barn it's now a banquet hall
68
so the barn has been transformed that space in the barn has been transformed.
69
And just so you know, Jen and I don't plan on doing this because
70
that would mean we would have to rent it out
71
and then people would come and there would be weddings till two in the morning in our barn.
72
I wouldn't enjoy that.
73
So we are not going to transform the barn into a banquet hall.
74
To adapt, to change your behavior or methods to fit a new situation.
75
And then this is actually me right now.
76
It will take me a few weeks to adapt to my new workload.
77
Summer ended and now I have been in a classroom every day this week.
78
Well, not Monday.
79
It was still a holiday.
80
So now I need to adapt.
81
I was used to being more relaxed every day.
82
Now I have to be more orderly.
83
In order for me to be healthy and to have energy and to be able to get all my work done,
84
I need to change my behavior and methods to fit the new situation of being at work.
85
So to adapt, to change your behavior methods to fit a new situation, and this is definitely true.
86
It will take me a few weeks to adapt to my new workload and definitely true of any teacher.
87
And this is true for students as well.
88
They need to adapt so that they can do well at school.
89
To adjust, we have to make a small change so that something works or feels better.
90
You can guess what this person's doing.
91
I had to adjust my new chair several times until I got it just right.
92
So again, sentences that are a little more complex.
93
I had to adjust my chair several times until I got it just right.
94
Just right meaning perfect.
95
The right height, leaning back the right amount.
96
This is actually Jen's chair, but my chair is over there.
97
right there.
98
It's kind of dark.
99
You can't see it.
100
But yes, I did have to adjust that chair several times before it was the way it felt good.
101
The arms go up and down.
102
I had to get them at the right level.
103
I had to adjust it many times.
104
I had to make a lot of adjustments.
105
To modify, to make small changes to something, to improve it or make it more suitable.
106
I never had this when I was a dad of little kids,
107
but this person, he decided to modify his bike so his kid could ride with him.
108
So you can see there's a seat for the dad, there's handlebars for the dad, and there's a little seat for the kid and handlebars for the kid.
109
I don't think the kid actually can steer the bike, maybe a little bit.
110
But whenever you do something like this, like you can modify a car, you can modify a bike,
111
you can modify things so that you improve it or make it more suitable for the situation.
112
I can't think of another example right now, but I do know sometimes people get glasses
113
and then they modify the part where your nose goes so
114
that it works a little bit better for when it's on their face.
115
These are a little bit crooked.
116
I've had these a long time.
117
I've had these as long as I've been doing YouTube, I think.
118
So they've, they've stood the test of time.
119
There's another English phrase for you.
120
To alter, to change something, to change something so that it is slightly different.
121
And a classic example would be if you ever buy a piece of clothing and it doesn't quite fit, you might go to a tailor.
122
The tailor took his measurements so he could alter his pants.
123
Maybe he's going to bring in the waist so that it fits better around the waist.
124
Maybe he's going to shorten the, um, the pant legs.
125
Um, I don't get my clothes altered, or we also say tailored.
126
You can use that as a verb very often.
127
If I would, if I was to buy a new suit jacket, I would probably get it tailored or altered.
128
If I bought like really nice pants to go with the suit jacket, I would probably have them altered.
129
Um, if I bought a shirt to wear with the suit and tie, I would probably have that altered as well.
130
To revise, to change something you have written or planned in order to improve it.
131
I tend to revise my lesson plans a lot during the first few days of school.
132
So when you write something, you can always revise it.
133
So if I write a sentence, I can revise the sentence by changing one word and putting a different word in.
134
I might change the tense.
135
Like in this sentence, I decided to revise it
136
because originally I said I revised my lesson plans a lot this past week.
137
And I didn't want it to be in the past tense, so I revised it.
138
I changed the phrase so
139
that it says I tend to revise my lesson plans a lot during the first few days of school.
140
So to revise, to change something you have written or planned in order to improve it. To edit.
141
To make changes to writing, photos, audio or video to improve the finished product.
142
And here you can see someone is editing on their computer.
143
I have to edit my videos before uploading them or else they would be quite boring.
144
This is very true.
145
If I just uploaded the video without editing it, it wouldn't be as exciting.
146
I don't do a lot of editing though.
147
So usually I can say what I need to say in about a minute, and then I put all of the clips together, which is still considered editing.
148
But to edit, to make changes to writing photos, audio, or video to improve the finished product.
149
To upgrade, to replace or improve something with a newer or better version.
150
I upgraded my computer with faster memory, or you can also say RAM.
151
So when you upgrade something, you can upgrade something.
152
it usually means that you have something better.
153
I'm trying to think if you would say that you would upgrade a car.
154
Like I had a 2022 Toyota RAV4 and I'm going to upgrade to a 2024.
155
You could say that.
156
You probably might just say I'm going to replace it with.
157
But if I said to someone, I had a 2022 RAV4 and I bought a 2022 RAV4, but with a nicer trim level,
158
someone could say, oh, that's a nice upgrade for you.
159
We can use it also as a noun.
160
So to upgrade, to replace or improve something with a newer or better version.
161
Don't replace me with a newer or better YouTuber to learn English from.
162
You don't need to upgrade that.
163
Although you should watch other English teachers on YouTube for sure.
164
To replace, to remove one thing and put another thing in its place.
165
This has happened to me.
166
In fact, the last time this happened, it happened to my sister.
167
I replaced the car battery with a new one.
168
So a couple of years ago, my sister's vehicle wouldn't start and I went to her house and we figured out it was the battery.
169
Actually, her vehicle was here.
170
How did she get here?
171
Yeah.
172
Anyways, she needed a new battery.
173
So I went to Canadian Tire.
174
By the way, that's where I made the short lesson on coffee makers earlier this week at Canadian Tire, a large store that sells everything except food.
175
I bought a battery and then I went home and I replaced her car battery with the new battery.
176
So to replace, to remove one thing and put another thing in its place, I replaced the car battery with a new one.
177
to switch, to stop using or doing one thing and start using or doing another.
178
I decided to switch from drinking coffee to drinking tea.
179
I decided years ago to switch from drinking coffee to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
180
You could say he decided to switch from eating sugar to eating no sugar.
181
So it's when you change your behavior or you change something you do to something else.
182
You could say he decided he liked English with Lucy or Vanessa better.
183
So he switched and instead of watching Bob the Canadian, he watched Lucy and Vanessa, which by the way, are both very good English teachers on YouTube.
184
So to switch, to stop using or doing one thing and start using or doing another. To swap.
185
I like this one.
186
It's fun to say.
187
To exchange one thing for another.
188
I like apples better than oranges.
189
So my colleague and I swapped.
190
So let's say you go to work and you have an orange
191
and you don't really like oranges and you look over
192
and your coworker or colleague has an apple and you really like apples.
193
You might swap.
194
That means you give them the orange and they give you the apple.
195
Did I get that right?
196
You could also say trade.
197
So you could trade.
198
Um, but swap, swap's a good verb.
199
Like we have to swap our regular tires for snow tires later this year.
200
So the mechanic, or my son might do it, will take the old summer tires off and put the winter tires on.
201
So we'll swap tires.
202
We're exchanging one thing for another.
203
To convert, to change something into a different form or make it suitable for a different use.
204
They converted the garage into a bedroom.
205
not sure I would be comfortable having a garage door in my bedroom
206
but maybe they didn't need the garage anymore they didn't have
207
a car to put in the garage maybe they needed an extra room in their house
208
because their mom or dad their older mom
209
or dad was moving in they could convert the garage to a bedroom
210
and I'm just thinking here how is this different to transform
211
it's not you could transform a garage into a bedroom as well.
212
I have a friend whose parents actually did this.
213
They weren't using their garage.
214
They actually built a separate building as a garage and a workshop.
215
And so they didn't need their garage.
216
So they converted their garage into a bedroom.
217
They didn't leave the garage door in though.
218
They put a wall with a window so that, yeah, it would be weird if you had a garage door in your bedroom.
219
But I guess you could drive your car in there if you wanted.
220
I don't know why, but you could. To deteriorate.
221
To gradually become worse in condition or quality.
222
A wooden fence will deteriorate over time.
223
I'm saying that word a little quickly.
224
Let me say it again. To deteriorate. To deteriorate.
225
To gradually become worse in condition or quality.
226
If you build a fence out of normal wood, like untreated wood, it will deteriorate over time.
227
it will eventually start to rot.
228
It will start to fall apart.
229
It will become worse than its original condition.
230
However, if you build a fence out of treated lumber, it will last much, much longer.
231
So to deteriorate to gradually become worse in condition or quality. To ripen.
232
Let's make this one really big.
233
To become ripe and ready to eat.
234
Now I apologize for using the word ripe in the definition, but I couldn't think of any other word to describe to ripen.
235
When you pick a green tomato, eventually it will ripen and turn red.
236
The tomatoes will ripen over time.
237
So when something becomes ripe, it is usually a fruit or vegetable.
238
And when you pick it, it's not ready to eat.
239
Maybe you pick a banana and the banana is green.
240
You want to wait for the banana to start to turn yellow.
241
You want it to ripen before you eat it.
242
So to ripen, to become ripe and ready to eat.
243
To develop, to gradually grow or change, in order to develop stronger muscles,
244
you must increase the amount you lift.
245
I know you're learning English.
246
I'm having trouble pronouncing words this morning for some reason.
247
It must have been a long week.
248
But anyways, if you go to the gym and you lift a 10 pound weight three times a week for a year, eventually your muscles will not develop.
249
They will just stay the same.
250
If you want to become stronger, if you want your muscles to become bigger, if you want more strength,
251
you have to increase from time to time the amount that you are lifting so that your muscles will develop.
252
You want your muscles to continue to develop.
253
And you can change how you work out to help your muscles develop as well.
254
But to develop, to gradually grow or change. To worsen.
255
To become worse than before.
256
So once again, I had to use the word to define, a form of the word to define the verb.
257
But to worsen, here is your example.
258
The weather will worsen throughout the day.
259
You can see a storm on the horizon here,
260
maybe in the morning it's sunny and the weather forecast says the weather will worsen throughout the day.
261
That means if it's summer, you can expect rain.
262
It might get windy.
263
If it's winter, it means there's probably going to be a lot of snow.
264
The weather when it's sunny is nice, but it will worsen, which means it will not be as nice.
265
So the weather will worsen throughout today to worsen, to become worse than before.
266
To fade, to gradually lose color, brightness, or strength.
267
The curtains will fade after years in the sun.
268
If you buy curtains and you keep them closed and the sun shines on them every day, the color starts to fade.
269
If they were red when you bought them, they'll be very light red after 10 years.
270
Things will fade.
271
Sound can also fade.
272
Like if you, it's the end of a song and you're a DJ, like you can fade the music down.
273
And so it just becomes quieter and quieter until no one can hear it.
274
And then, and the slider you use is called a fader.
275
You fade it down.
276
Um, and in a video I can fade out and fade in.
277
You'll notice between my clips, it fades to black and comes back.
278
If you watch one of my regular videos to fade, to gradually lose color, brightness or strength.
279
To shrink, to become smaller in size.
280
A cotton shirt will shrink the first time you wash it and put it in the dryer.
281
This man bought a shirt and it is not the same size as when he bought it.
282
When you wash something that's made of cotton, it will shrink.
283
If it's made of polyester or a cotton polyester blend, it will not shrink or shrink less.
284
But generally, most clothing is pre-shrunk.
285
So the past tense shrunk, like he shrunk his shirt,
286
uh, pre-shrunk meaning they already tried to make it shrink a little bit to shrink, to become smaller in size,
287
to reverse, to change something to the opposite direction or decision order to the opposite direction, order or decision.
288
Sorry, I missed a comma there after direction, the store reversed its decision to close and decided to stay open.
289
So they had a sign that said store closing, but they reversed their decision.
290
And now it says store will stay open now.
291
That's definitely written by AI.
292
By the way, I should be transparent about my use of AI for images.
293
I pay a licensing fee to get photos from people.
294
So 90% or more of my photos are from a website called FreePick,
295
where I pay a yearly fee to have permission to use photos that actual human beings have taken.
296
In every lesson though, there's usually one or two slides where I can't find the perfect picture.
297
And then I will use AI to generate that photo.
298
But generally 90, 95%, sometimes a hundred percent of my photos are copyrighted photos
299
that I have paid to use to make my lessons better.
300
I want to do that because I earn money during doing YouTube.
301
I don't want to use AI for all of my images.
302
So the store reversed its decision to close and decided to stay open.
303
The government often reverses their decisions.
304
I'm not sure if you do that, but the government will say, we're going to give everyone a $10,000 rebate this fall.
305
And then a week later they say, ah, we've reversed our decision.
306
you're getting nothing.
307
To increase, to become greater in amount, number, size, or level.
308
So the price of gas will increase this week.
309
The price of gas will go up this week.
310
So I did add go up because it's an equivalent of the two.
311
So to increase, to become greater in amount, number, size, or level.
312
And I forgot my commas there as well.
313
To decrease, to become smaller or less in amounts, number, size, or level.
314
I remembered the commas this time.
315
I don't think the price of gas is going to decrease anytime soon.
316
I don't think the price of gas is going to come down anytime soon.
317
So the second sentences here I added because this is the common way to say this.
318
The top sentence is the very correct way.
319
The second sentence is what we actually say.
320
So I would say, oh, the price of gas, it'll go up this week.
321
It will go up this week.
322
I don't think the price of gas is going to come down any time soon.
323
To decrease, to become smaller or less in amount, number, size, or level.
324
To age, to become older or change as time passes.
325
The wood will begin to age over time.
326
I've used this example a couple times.
327
When you put wood on the side of a building, it has a certain color.
328
It looks fresh and new.
329
But after a few years, it will age.
330
It will start to get darker.
331
It will start to look different.
332
Maybe some of the cracks will get a little bit bigger.
333
The wood will age over time.
334
We also have a verb to weather.
335
The wood will weather over time.
336
As it's exposed to the sun and rain and snow and water, it will change it will age and it will weather over time.
337
So to age, to become older or change as time passes.
