Hi guys, I recently started re -watching one of my favorite TV shows
2
and then I remembered that a lot of people have been asking for some TV show recommendations,
3
whether that be for learning English or just wanting to watch something new.
4
So I thought I'd share with you some of my all -time favorite TV shows
5
and these would be great for practicing English
6
or maybe even just learning about American humor or American culture or anything like that.
7
So let's get into it.
8
First is the show that I just started re -watching recently, and this one is Avatar The Last Airbender.
9
And I know when some people see a cartoon, they might be thinking, I don't want to watch that.
10
That's just for kids.
11
And it is, but just hear me out on this.
12
It is a kids show technically, and I did watch this for the first time when I was a kid.
13
But regardless of that, it's still considered one of the best TV shows in America.
14
And to this day, people still talk about this show.
15
So basically in this show, there are four nations and each nation is based off an element like water,
16
fire, earth, and air.
17
Some people in these nations have the ability to bend these elements.
18
So if you live in the water nation, you might be able to water bend and control the water with your hands.
19
But there is one person who is able to control all four elements and this person is called the Avatar.
20
And this person is supposed to keep the peace between all four nations but the current
21
Avatar goes missing and he's been missing for more than a hundred years.
22
So the Fire Nation kind of starts this war
23
and is trying to conquer all four nations until one day the Avatar comes back.
24
So when he comes back, he has to master all four elements and restore peace and stop the war.
25
I could honestly talk about this show for so long.
26
It's so good.
27
It's so interesting.
28
There are so many great characters that have amazing character development.
29
The animation is great.
30
It feels nostalgic to me at least.
31
And despite being a kid's show, it does deal with some pretty heavy topics while also sometimes being really lighthearted and fun to watch.
32
I have a very special place in my heart for this show
33
and I also highly recommend it to you guys
34
because the good thing about cartoons is that usually they speak pretty clearly and it's really easy to understand what they're saying.
35
The conversations are pretty simple,
36
it's easy to follow and they also use a lot of phrases and expressions that we really do use in real life.
37
I really highly highly recommend this show.
38
It's really really good and just trust me on this
39
and give it a shot and each episode is only like 20 minutes long
40
so it's pretty easy to squeeze in your schedule.
41
If you don't want animation or cartoons I totally understand
42
and here are some other shows that I think you would like as well.
43
I would definitely recommend New Girl.
44
It's about a girl who moves into an apartment with three other guys without really knowing that they were all guys.
45
It's a pretty simple plot that's easy to follow.
46
It's filled with real life conversations and things that we would actually say in day -to -day life.
47
It's also a great show for understanding what American humor is like right now.
48
So a lot of other sitcoms, they might be a little cheesy.
49
And personally for me, I really hate those laugh tracks that they add in.
50
So this show feels much more natural.
51
And I actually did like laugh out loud a few times when watching this show.
52
So I highly recommend New Girl.
53
And then similarly, I also recommend a show called Parks
54
and Recreation and we usually just refer to this as Parks and Rec because the name is literally way too long.
55
And for this show, you also just have to trust me on this.
56
Like the first season is pretty rough.
57
It's pretty hard for even me to watch.
58
So if you want, you could skip to the second season and just start watching from there.
59
But this show has a lot of really interesting characters.
60
It's really funny and it's also good for practicing daily expressions.
61
If you're looking for something a little more dramatic, then I'd recommend one of my favorite shows, Mad Men.
62
This one is a bit more mature, but it's still great for practicing English.
63
So this show follows a huge ad agency in New York City
64
and it's set in the 1960s and we follow the main characters who are working in the creative department
65
and they're making all these ads for these huge companies.
66
But we also see the characters complex lives in a time in America where things were changing so rapidly,
67
both socially and economically.
68
One of the reasons I love this show so much is not only because of the story, which is really great, it's really interesting,
69
but also because they pay such close attention to detail.
70
So from the set design to the costumes, to the way that people thought back then, everything is so realistic in the show.
71
So I think if you like drama and history and interesting storylines, this would be a really, really great show to watch.
72
I highly recommend it.
73
And this show is great not only for practicing English,
74
but it also shows you a lot of really important historical events that happened in America.
75
And it's really great for understanding more about American history or American culture.
76
And it's honestly like a real true portal to look back and see what life was really like back then.
77
Honestly, I always mention stuff like learning more about American humor, American history, and stuff like that.
78
Because if you really want to learn a language, it's a lot more than just memorizing a few words and expressions.
79
If you want to go deeper and start to develop fluency, then it's going to take a lot more than just simple memorization.
80
Language and culture are very, very closely intertwined.
81
So if you really want to learn a language, you can't do so without understanding at least a little bit about the culture.
82
Because there are so many expressions and even the characteristics of a language that are rooted in the culture.
83
I mean, just like when I learned Chinese, my Chinese professors always emphasized the importance of understanding Chinese culture.
84
And in our classes, our Chinese professors always made time for understanding more about Chinese history or holidays or special events,
85
stuff like that.
86
Which, from experience, I can tell you, really helped me when I was learning Chinese.
87
So anyway, I hope these shows were helpful for you guys for learning English
88
and these would all be great for helping you create
89
that English environment even at home and also for learning daily expressions or whatever it may be.
90
If you watched any of these shows or if you do watch any of these shows,
91
please let me know in the comments what you thought of them or if you like them.
92
I'm really interested to see which shows you guys will like
93
and also feel free to recommend some other shows
94
that might have helped you when you were learning English as well and I'll see you guys next time.
95
Okay, bye -bye.
