1
Hello again!
2
Today we're answering the question, why do people sometimes say, I do want to do something, or I do like this, I do love you.
3
It's kind of weird.
4
Let's look at an example.
5
The short answer, the reason people put do in a sentence is for emphasis.
6
A normal sentence might be like this, for example.
7
I'm a fish.
8
This is a contracted form.
9
What is the uncontracted form?
10
I am a fish.
11
That's obvious.
12
In English, contractions are more common.
13
They sound more natural, they're better, just contractions are better in a normal sentence.
14
But if you're trying to deny what someone says
15
or go against what someone says for example I'm a fish you're not a fish I am a fish
16
when someone says you're not the thing
17
and you want to argue with them make it stronger you emphasize you emphasize
18
that verb I am a fish I picked weird examples I know I'm sorry why am I doing a fish
19
but it's the same feeling for the verb do let me give you an example
20
if a guy wants to say to a girl something like
21
I love you that's a normal sentence right I love you normal
22
but maybe she doubts this
23
and she wants to argue against it you don't love me she's saying a negative you don't love me
24
but he wants to argue against the negative I I do love you!
25
He used the do to argue against the don't.
26
It's adding stress, adding emphasis, adding strength to your sentence.
27
So the whole thing would sound like, I love you, you don't love me, I do love you.
28
In another example, if an angry girlfriend or boyfriend wants to say,
29
hmm, you didn't call me yesterday.
30
Again, there's the negative, you didn't call me, a normal sentence would be, I called you last night.
31
But he's arguing against her accusation of not calling her.
32
So he could say, I did call you.
33
She thinks.
34
He didn't call her.
35
He wants to say, no, that's wrong.
36
I did call you.
37
So is this the only way you can use this to argue against a negative?
38
No. Let me give you another example.
39
So, normal sentence you could say, I have a girlfriend, I have a boyfriend, whatever.
40
But, again, this style adds emphasis and strength to your sentence.
41
But in a certain way.
42
You could use it to go against an expectation.
43
So, he could say, well I'm not good looking.
44
You might be thinking, oh, okay, so you don't have a girlfriend.
45
Wow, that's mean.
46
But then he's thinking, hmm, if I say I'm not good looking, You think I don't have a girlfriend, but you're wrong.
47
I'm not good looking, but I do have a girlfriend.
48
So in this case, it would be going against the expectation.
49
Okay, try a sentence with this in the comments below.
50
See you next time.
51
Bye.
