Creazione lezione...
1
Good afternoon.
2
Dwayne here, Dry Creek Rainer School.
3
Another hot day here in Kentucky.
4
I think we've got about four more days before
5
that cold front's supposed to come through and drop our highs down to the 70s.
6
We've endured up to this point, so we can endure four more days.
7
I'm here in, I guess, my woodshed, which is just an open -ended...
8
Here, let me do this.
9
it's an open -ended lean -to on the front of my barn
10
so i got good shade i got a little bit of breeze coming through it's making things tolerable let's see
11
if we adjust this there we go um got my sms meerschaum loaded up with some cornell
12
and dill dark fire kentucky
13
closest thing i have to an all -day everyday smoke it's the thing i reach for the most
14
i just did a video over on the other channel on
15
the tack room bible talk in fact it's uploading in the
16
background now the uh mobile strength here is very low
17
so it takes a while So I thought I'd just go ahead and work on this while that's uploading.
18
I want to do the same subject here, but with a little bit different,
19
just a little different approach to it.
20
Same subject.
21
We're going to talk about leadership, okay?
22
There's a lot of things, a lot of misunderstandings about leadership today.
23
Anyway, if you're, if you want to know more on how leadership applies in the church today,
24
biblically, you might want to go over there and watch that other video when you're done with this one.
25
But, you might want to make sure you got your big boy pants on before you do, because, because it's a little plain spoken.
26
Okay?
27
So anyhow, leadership.
28
Let me dispel a couple of incorrect ideas about leadership.
29
And I'm talking about just leadership for men today, whatever you ladies can take from this and apply to your life, you're welcome.
30
But for you men, for you young men, for you older men, this thing of leadership, I want to break it down a little bit.
31
And I want to dispel some false ideas we have about it.
32
let me say first off that just you don't have to be a born leader to lead and
33
not everyone who's called upon in life to take a position of leadership is a born leader alright Right.
34
It's it's not a position that you're born into.
35
Some come by it more naturally than others, but there's a mistake in that idea as well.
36
Just being born a man, you're born into a position that will most likely at sometimes call you,
37
call you into leadership if anything,
38
if only for a limited period of time.
39
The most important thing I want to address in this is leadership has nothing to do with authority.
40
I believe that's the biggest mistake and the biggest misunderstanding.
41
It has nothing to do with authority.
42
now many of you have I'm guessing most of you do or have worked jobs
43
let's see if we can get this going here
44
and you've had fellas in the position of authority whether it be the owner the foreman the supervisor or whatever it is,
45
but they have no leadership whatsoever.
46
They have granted authority, but they're just bullies.
47
they're narcissists and they don't lead and they are the perfect example of how just
48
because you have authority that does not mean you have leadership
49
now there are those in authority who have natural leadership ability
50
um
51
and i'll define leadership here in a minute according to my
52
definition you may define it different you do you okay as always um
53
and then you know people who are who do not have a recognized official position of authority
54
but they're natural leaders
55
and they're they're not your supervisor they're not the foreman they're not the boss they're not the owner
56
but on a job they're the one the guys look to
57
they're the one who kind of always seems to have the spirit
58
and the idea hey guys what if we do this
59
and it just works they have
60
that calm clear -headed self -assured hey well we could do this
61
and it clicks for everybody it's like yeah hey that makes sense
62
that worked best for everybody and then you go down
63
that road that's leadership without authority leadership and authority are not the same thing
64
and they are not always combined in the same personage someone who's always leaning on their authority,
65
someone who is always bragging up their authority,
66
someone who's always pulling out their position of authority and using it as a cudgel,
67
as a whip, they are not leaders.
68
And so you say, Duane, I'm just a guy.
69
I'm just a guy.
70
I'm always the quiet guy.
71
I'm always that guy.
72
I'm not a leader.
73
Okay.
74
What do you define as a leader?
75
Well, by nature, by nature of the very definition of the word itself, a leader is the dude out in front.
76
authority is from behind driving you forward authority leadership is out in front leading you in a path he's already going
77
authority says you guys get up and go out there
78
and do that because i said so go on you you you go go do
79
that go do that because i said so
80
if you don't you're going to face this punishment you're going to face this trouble.
81
You don't have to know why.
82
Do it because I said so.
83
That's authority.
84
Leadership is out front.
85
Says, guys, we're kind of out here now.
86
We're out on the middle of this prairie.
87
Haven't seen rain in six or eight weeks.
88
The water barrels on the wagons are getting low and the animals are tired and everybody's kind of complex.
89
You all came from Ohio and Pennsylvania and Boston, and you bought these wagons,
90
and you're headed to a new life in Oregon, but you've never been through this before.
91
I've been over this path before, and I know about four days ahead of us,
92
there's a small river, and I know
93
that there's a stand of trees just east direction of where we're at on
94
that river that has grass
95
and what we could do guys is we could head for the river
96
and kind of shift our bearing a little bit to the east
97
and find that grass and we could stop there and catch up
98
and rest up and fill our water barrels
99
and water all the animals again and kind of catch our breath and then move forward.
100
That's leadership.
101
What do you think, guys?
102
You want to do that?
103
Well, I don't know if I want to do that.
104
Well, we could.
105
I don't know.
106
They told us back in St. Joe that we need to push hard.
107
We need to do this.
108
All right, fellas.
109
You do what you want but I'm going to move off slow and easy myself with my wagon.
110
I'm going to head for that meadow and I'm going to head for that river.
111
Because from experience, I know that's the best way to go.
112
Y 'all do what you want.
113
But I highly recommend that you think about going this path that I'm taking.
114
Because I know this path.
115
I've been down this path.
116
And this is the best path.
117
This is the path I'm going.
118
And then he heads off that way.
119
and then by one by one
120
they look at each other and they shrug
121
and they're like what else are we going to do and they fall in behind him
122
guess what he's a leader
123
and he's leading no threats
124
no authority no reaching into his coat pocket
125
pulling out a document that everybody signed said you have to do what I say do he's just leading
126
he's just quietly saying
127
I know that life is this way I know this is the best way
128
and I'm going to go this way because I know from experience it's the best way
129
but y 'all do what you want believe it or not that's true leadership young men
130
you have a group of guys and y 'all been buddies since junior high and there has been years of
131
immature poor decisions amongst the group
132
and we one day you say somebody says hey you know
133
what let's go down to the dew drop in let's get drunk tonight
134
and let's go out and farmer johnson's field
135
and he just planted it in wheat and let's do donuts
136
and let's spin out
137
and tear it up out there tonight it's supposed to be
138
a full moment let's have fun quiet leadership is where you step up
139
and you say you know what i've been down there before
140
i've been down this path before this isn't the right path to go it's about time we grow up
141
and you quietly say guys
142
i've been working for a farmer for the last year now for the first time in my life i realize
143
how much work it is to go out and level
144
that ground out and re -sow that seed because now I go through it.
145
And I don't think that's probably the best way to go.
146
Let's go camping up on the bluff instead.
147
Let's go do this instead.
148
I'm not going to do that.
149
I'm going to go do this.
150
This is best.
151
No authority.
152
Guys, I forbid you to do this.
153
You can't do this.
154
Anybody goes out to the farmer's place out there and tears up his field tonight, I'm going to whip you, you know.
155
No, just leadership.
156
Leadership is finding the best path to go and going and trying to say, guys, this is why this is the best path.
157
This is why I'm going down that path.
158
Now, if any of you want to follow and go down this path, you're welcome to do so.
159
Son, you just stepped into a position of leadership, and no authority was required, and when you start getting into that life habit,
160
there's an ant getting down in front of my camera there, you're well on your way to a much better life,
161
come on you little rascal, he is persistent,
162
and he's fast oh there he goes we're just keeping it
163
real guys y 'all don't care do you man that's the
164
fastest little ant well okay that's leadership that's not authority people think
165
that to be in leadership i have to have authority no
166
let's get a little closer to home okay your family's not
167
going in the direction how to go now i'm not talking about underage children
168
that are still living at home that is a position of authority
169
but your wife even for those of us who are Christians
170
where we believe God set it up as the husband is
171
the leader in the home he is the leader in the home okay he holds a responsibility
172
but he doesn't have what most today would recognize.
173
authority and
174
when we decide we need to go down a better path we try to get our family to go down
175
that path by the hammer of authority
176
and in today the women today they're forget it okay forget
177
it they're not going to follow your authority in fact they've
178
been brainwashed they ain't gonna follow anybody's authority all right they don't recognize authority
179
and so the men don't do anything and the family implodes
180
because the man says I have no authority in my family
181
and I try to get my family to go a path
182
that is correct and they won't do it and therefore my hands are tied and I'm helpless.
183
It was never a question of authority.
184
And I've gotten this question from a number of men and women.
185
It's a question of leadership.
186
Leadership does not require and demand that anyone follows you.
187
Leadership demands that you get out in front and go the direction that you know you need to go.
188
so if you're like we need to start we need to start going to church
189
just for an example we need to start going to church and the wife says i'm not going to church
190
our kids are getting in trouble in school all the time they're starting to pick up things
191
that are not right that we don't believe in we need to get them under some good godly influence
192
i'm not going to church and maybe she'll throw a fit
193
and say um and you're not taking the kids to church
194
and again given the situation we have in this country you
195
don't feel like you have the authority to make them do
196
that and you probably don't just the real hardcore realities you don't but it doesn't take authority to lead.
197
You say, okay, well, Sunday morning I'm going to church.
198
And you get up and you get dressed.
199
Anybody want to go?
200
No?
201
Okay, you go.
202
You have found a path that is the best and better path to take, and you have gotten in front, and you have started down that,
203
and you've started leading down that path.
204
Now, sometimes, for a long time, it can feel like you're not leading anything.
205
You're just taking a walk because you're out by yourself.
206
But that's what has to be.
207
You say, you know, we should start, whatever, having family devotions.
208
We should start praying together as a family.
209
There are some who think that's what you need and some don't
210
but let's say you feel like that would be very helpful to your family
211
and the wife's like I'm not interested in that
212
and the kids just want to play video games and the wife will step in and block you
213
from leading the children into that okay, alright whatever you set up, 7 o 'clock every evening,
214
you go find a quiet place and you sit there and you read your Bible and you pray
215
and you have family devotions by yourself.
216
You don't have the authority to drive them and to make them do it.
217
Lead them and lead them by going down the right path and be willing to go down that path alone
218
because they may need to see you a long way down
219
that path and see that you have not stepped in
220
so many traps and so many snares and your path is working so much better than their path before they will,
221
if they ever do and that's a reality before they ever do choose to start going down your path leadership not authority
222
it works in church as men go into a church
223
just that quiet standing up saying fellas
224
that this isn't this is not the right way to go um
225
and there will be backlash there's always backlash um leadership takes far more strength personal strength than authority does
226
Authority is a cheap strength that is being granted to you by somebody else.
227
Leadership is a personal strength that comes from inside.
228
Before my family and I went to Papua New Guinea back in 1998, we were getting ready to go.
229
We were preparing.
230
We had, you know, it wasn't a decision.
231
The decision had been made.
232
The preparation had been made.
233
We were just waiting on the proper dates to go.
234
And while we were waiting,
235
several weeks before that, the men of the church got up and told the church,
236
we think we're being led that we need to pay off our mortgage.
237
We don't need to be answering to the bank, spending God's money on all this interest.
238
We need to be separated from the world and we need to pay this off.
239
and the church said sounds like a wonderful idea we agree
240
and we did it was the most amazing thing in a
241
church i've ever seen in my life we had women who had been married for a
242
while bringing their wedding dresses that they had saved
243
and said here sell this and put that money towards a mortgage engagement rings
244
and wedding rings we had an old an old black man in the church, poor as Job's turkey.
245
The church van went and picked him up and, and brought him to services.
246
He had a, he was a big, big man, but he had a heart.
247
He was the gentlest, sweetest soul.
248
He had a heart as big as he was.
249
He brought in a pair of shoes.
250
It's what he had.
251
And he gave his shoes
252
and said sell these put it towards I want to do my part we had men bring in hunting rifles
253
and people had second cars and that they used vehicles they sold
254
and brought it in and we did we paid that mortgage off we got out of debt to the bank.
255
A few weeks later, the pastor had one of these fake, false evangelists.
256
They're not evangelists.
257
It's not biblical.
258
That was a personal friend of his come in and had a one -week We had a one -week series of messages,
259
and the pastor was a good man.
260
He was a good pastor.
261
He had a good family, and we loved him, and we took care of him.
262
the pastor had expressed
263
in the course of a conversation with this evangelist friend of his that they had
264
four or five children and they'd like to have a van that's what they'd like to have
265
because of the size of the family.
266
Well, the next night, this evangelist got up.
267
I'm going somewhere, okay?
268
The next night, this evangelist got up and did not encourage.
269
He ripped into the church.
270
He castigated.
271
He reprimanded.
272
This pastor of yours is a good man.
273
He has a good family.
274
and, you know, if you were good people, you would love your pastor and you would take care of your pastor and he wants a van,
275
you guys need to go down to the dealership and buy your pastor a van.
276
And the church was full.
277
And this false evangelist, as is their skill, he had whipped everybody up to an emotional frenzy because we honestly did love the pastor.
278
He was an excellent man.
279
We loved his family.
280
and they were like yeah yeah yeah and
281
so then the evangelist led right there into a vote how many of you vote you know
282
that let's go down and go down dealership and
283
buy him a van oh yeah yeah yeah and i'm sitting there back on the back wall i was security and
284
just kind of the floating anything anybody needed back there and i'm sitting there and i'm appalled I'm absolutely appalled.
285
And I'm like, man, I don't know what to do in this situation.
286
I'm just a young man.
287
Married, had three small children.
288
And so I didn't say anything.
289
And then we met every Sunday night before service started.
290
The men of the church met in a room, and we prayed for the service.
291
And there were probably 10 or 12 of us in there.
292
and we met, we prayed, and we got done, and I spoke up.
293
I said, fellas, can I have a moment?
294
I have something on my heart.
295
And they're like, yeah, Dwayne, of course, sure, what is it?
296
I said, look, we went before the church,
297
and we led the church into getting ourselves out of debt.
298
And I said, we led them into sacrifice, deep,
299
deep personal sacrifice to sell very dear personal items of theirs to get out of debt
300
because we felt like it was not biblical for us to owe the world.
301
We just did that.
302
and the pastor was sitting there I said look we love
303
Mike all of us nobody in here is going to disagree we love pastor Mike
304
and we're always happy to take care of him and
305
if he needs a van then by all means we should get him a van
306
but can we really biblically in all consciousness go back before the church and lead them back into debt again.
307
And they sit there and they're like oh man
308
did not even think of this did not even see it did not even
309
no we can't do that and I'm like listen whatever you guys decide I'm not
310
going to go against it but this was on my heart
311
and this is what I think the mistake I think we're fixing to make
312
and Pastor Mike being the good godly man he is says no I agree we have vehicles
313
a van is a nice luxury
314
but right now the church is not in the position we
315
don't need to do this we will keep on with what we're doing
316
and it was resolved and the church was happy smooth.
317
Everybody was on the same page.
318
I left and went to New Guinea and I got a letter from a friend.
319
So that same evangelist came back, held another meeting while I was gone
320
and found out the church had not gone and gone into debt and gotten the pastor a van,
321
found out what I had said in the meeting.
322
And so he stood up in the pulpit,
323
called me out by name in front of my entire congregation and reprimanded and castigated me and castigated the church for our decision.
324
It broke my heart, but it taught me a lesson.
325
Because although it broke my heart, I knew that I was right.
326
And along with knowing that I was right, I knew that I had no authority,
327
so I did not get offended because those under my authority rebuked my authority.
328
I had no authority, so therefore I had no skin in the game.
329
What I had was a conscious and the courage to stand up and say, fellas, the path you're fixing to go down, that's not a good path.
330
I think this path over here's a better path and that's the path we should go.
331
Leadership is not authority and leadership is often a very lonely path.
332
It does not require a born into ability it simply requires quiet courage
333
and enough knowledge and wisdom to know
334
that that's not a good way to go that's a better way to go
335
and I'm going to go that way
336
because it's a better way to go who wants to go with me there's no reason why you can't do
337
that at a job.
338
There's no reason why you can't do that in your family.
339
There's no reason why you can't do that in a circle of friends.
340
There's no reason why you can't do that in church.
341
There's no reason why you can't do that at any point in life.
342
You cannot be a real man if you do not have the courage and the quiet wisdom.
343
To exercise leadership with the proper heart and the proper way when leadership is required.
344
It has nothing to do with your personality.
345
It has nothing to do with your position.
346
It has nothing to do with your title.
347
It has nothing to do with anything.
348
It only has to do with your character.
349
It only has to do with your character.
350
Okay?
351
Anyhow, I hope this clarifies some things for you.
352
I hope it helps somebody.
353
And why not? Be logical. Be reasonable. Be safe. Have fun. And exercise true leadership.
354
I will catch you guys next time.
