Okay, let's get started with the lesson.
11
I'm going to show you a pair of words which both have the same silent letter.
12
Say the words out loud and try to identify the silent letter.
13
Then listen and repeat after me to check and practice.
14
Here's our first pair.
15
Try it yourself.
16
Listen and repeat after me.
17
Handsome.
18
Wednesday.
19
Now in both of these words, the letter D is silent.
20
It's not handsome or wedness day.
21
Drop the d sound.
22
Handsome.
23
Wednesday.
24
Can you think of any more words with a silent d?
25
Sandwich and handkerchief are two common examples, although some people do say sandwich.
26
I think it's harder to pronounce that way.
27
Another common pronunciation I like is actually with a mmm sound.
28
Sandwich.
29
Okay, our second pair of words.
30
Say them out loud now.
31
Can you spot the silent letter?
32
Okay, listen and repeat.
33
Biscuit, circuit.
34
So both of these words have a silent U.
35
It's not biscuit or circuit.
36
Biscuit, circuit.
37
This silent U confuses my students in other common words like build and builder.
38
So take care with those words too.
39
Okay, pair number three, which letter is silent in both of these words?
40
Read them aloud, see what you think.
41
The letter H is silent.
42
Listen and repeat.
43
Honest, air.
44
We don't say honest or hair, drop the h sound.
45
Can you think of any other words beginning with a silent h?
46
H itself shouldn't have the h sound at the beginning, h.
47
There's also hour, honour and herb.
48
In British English, we say herb.
49
Erb is more North American pronunciation.
50
I say herb.
51
Americans tend to say herb.
52
Now, be careful with your article usage with these silent H words.
53
We need to use an, not a, as they begin with vowel sounds.
54
It was an honest mistake.
55
Give me an hour.
56
There are lots more silent H words in English, but most of them are so common, they usually don't cause confusion.
57
The letters WH in what, where, when, and why, for example, are just pronounced with a W sound.
58
My students do sometimes get confused by the pronunciation of the letters CH in some of these words though.
59
Look at these four words.
60
How are the letters CH pronounced in each one?
61
Well, in the first word, chaos, the letters CH make a K sound.
62
like in school, scheme, mechanic, and chemistry.
63
Notice it's not chemistry, it's chemistry.
64
Now in chore, the CH is pronounced ch, like in church and choose.
65
But the CH in chef is pronounced sh,
66
but in yacht, the letter CH are silent.
67
Don't get caught out by those sneaky silent letters.
68
Time for pair number four.
69
Read these aloud.
70
Now, you won't believe the number of times I've heard students say answer and sward, but these pronunciations are not correct.
71
Never pronounce the letter W in these words.
72
Instead, say answer, sward.
73
You might have already noticed that the letter W is silent when written with R at the beginning of a word,
74
like in right, wrist, wrinkle, and wrong.
75
Take care with those silent Ws.
76
Similarly, the letter K is silent when it appears with the letter N at the beginning of a word.
77
But you knew that, right?
78
Can you think of any other examples?
79
Well, we've got words like knife,
80
knuckle, knight, knee, knit, and knot,
81
to name but a few.
82
Okay, are you ready for our fifth pair?
83
Here it is.
84
Which letter is silent in both of these words?
85
Scissors, muscle.
86
The letter C isn't pronounced in either of these words.
87
I hear skizzes and muskles all the time.
88
Drop the C and say scissors, muscles instead.
89
The letter C is silent in a lot of words with the letters SC together.
90
Can you think of any more examples?
91
Well, Take care with the words scent,
92
scenario, fascinate and ascent as they all have a silent C.
93

94
Both of these words contain a silent F.
95
Just joking, I'm just making sure you're paying attention.
96
It's the L that is silent.
97
I hear a lot of students trying to pronounce the L.
98
half, calf.
99
Forget the all sound and just make the long R vowel sound instead.
100
Half, calf.
101
Much easier.
102
Okay, pair number seven, say these words out loud.
103
The letter S is silent in both of these words.
104
I'll is pronounced the same as the contraction of I will and is one syllable.
105
Isle.
106
And it's not Island, it's Island.
107
Okay, time for our penultimate pair.
108
Read them aloud.
109
Which letter is silent?
110
That's right, we never pronounce the letter P at the beginning of words with S.
111
Psychology.
112
Psychic.
113
Can you think of any more words like this?
114
Well, we've We've got psalm, pseudonym, and psychedelic.
115
These are all words of Greek origin.
116
Oh, and take care with these silent P words my students always mispronounce.
117
We have cupboard and receipt.
118
I know it's so tempting to say receipt.
119
Receipt.
120
Cupboard receipt.
121
Okay, time for our final pair.
122
Read these words out loud and try to identify the silent letter.
123
Now, if you said musicale or basically with a or a, try again musically, basically.
124
That's right, with some adverbs ending c-a-l-l-y, the a is silent.
125
Some speakers will pronounce it as a soft schwa sound musically, basically.
126
This is less common.
127
Most speakers don't pronounce the letter a at all and just say musically, basically, both with just three syllables.
128

134
He's also going to fit an island where I can keep my knives,
135
scissors, receipts, sandwich and biscuit tins and basically all of my bits and pieces.
136
Honestly, it's the best case scenario as I haven't got the muscle to do it myself.

このレッスンで学べること

動画で英語学習をするなら、発音の勘違いが多い単語を正しく覚えるのが最も効果的な方法のひとつです。このレッスンでは、黙字(発音されない文字)がある10以上の単語を取り上げ、正しい発音を練習します。特にイギリス英語のクリアで自然なアクセントを目指す方に最適で、シャドーイングを通してすぐに成果が見られるワークアウトになっています。

重要な語彙とフレーズ

  • Handsome(ハンサム):「d」が黙字。「ハンドサム」ではなく「ハンサム」
  • Wednesday(水曜日):「d」が黙字。「ウェンズデー」ではなく「ウェンズデー」
  • Biscuit(ビスケット):「u」が黙字。「ビスキット」ではなく「ビスケット」
  • Honest(正直な):「h」が黙字。
