1
April 23rd is International Publishing Copyright Day.
2
It's a timely reminder of the importance of protecting intellectual property not only in for physical books,
3
but also on digital platforms and outlets.
4
In the digital age, publishing is expanding rapidly,
5
with Asia-Pacific now accounting for up to 75% of global industry value.
6
In Vietnam, the shift is also clear with over 51,000 titles and more than 500 million copies and online views in 2025.
7
So what does this transformation look like and how is it changing the way we access books?
8
More in the following.
9
In the digital age, books have evolved beyond shelves and now exist on phones,
10
reading apps, and audio platforms.
11
The way people access books has undergone a radical transformation.
12
Most daily life now happens on our phones.
13
Formats like audiobooks and e-books sit right at this intersection.
14
They're convenient, accessible, and suited to fast multitasking lives.
15
But as a book moves from print into the digital space,
16
the change goes beyond how it is accessed.
17
It also gives the questions on how works are shared and how their rights are safeguarded.
18
When books enter the digital space,
19
they also bring new challenges,
20
as usage is diverse and content can spread very quickly,
21
raising concerns over easy copying and unauthorized downloads.
22
In Vietnam, copyright protection has been steadily strengthened,
23
most recently through amendments to the Law on Intellectual Property in 2022.
24
At the same time, publishers say they are also adapting their own strategies in response to the digital shift.
25
For publishers like us, the first priority is to convert printed books into digital formats as quickly as possible.
26
We are also working towards building our own digital space for each unit.
27
For example, our company is planning to develop a digital book platform that includes audiobooks,
28
short videos, as well as AI and expert-led advisory features.
29
By placing copyright at the center,
30
we work directly with leading authors and high-quality content and invest seriously in production to build an ecosystem where authors,
31
translators, publishers and platforms all benefit fairly.
32
I believe copyright is not just a legal issue,
33
but the foundation of a sustainable, quality content market.
34
As content continues to move online,
35
the focus now shifts to how copyright can be effectively protected in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
36
As the publishing world continues to evolve in the digital age,
37
questions around copyright and the intrinsic value of the written word are becoming more relevant.
38
Our reporter spoke with Dr. Nguyen Mạnh Hung,
39
chairman of Thái Ha Books, for more insight.
40
Thank you for speaking with us today.
41
How is e-books and audio books are changing the publishing industry today?
42
Because e-books are very confident.
43
You can read, you can bring this book everywhere.
44
You cannot take, you can take one book,
45
but you can take 10 books, 20 books, 100 books.
46
E-books can drive the new business model like audio book.
47
It's growing every day with different segment
48
and it's a new trend audio first in publishing in some
49
publishing you know they they do not publish this hard copy book
50
but they publish audio book first and sometimes they have ebook first
51
and it's enough for them
52
and even in some cases they do not publish hard cover books
53
so i think it is the trend and i think it's new it's the future for publishing today for for ASEAN,
54
for Vietnam, and for the world.
55
In your view, how can publishing adapt to digital change while still protecting the copyrights in other worlds?
56
Let's say this book, you could not buy it.
57
But if this book, we let's make e-book and then they make copy very very quickly,
58
very easily, and everywhere can have this copy.
59
It's a big issue because Vietnam is on the way for protection of the copyright.
60
We have commitment with the law and we're following the rule of the world,
61
but until today, by now the violation of the law is rather high.
62
Other countries, they have portion of turnover in the,
63
the publishing is very high,
64
like in Western country, 20,
65
30%, even in other countries,
66
in ASEAN country, Malaysia, Singapore,
67
at least they have 10% turnover in digital lives,
68
in e-book and old e-book.
69
Why in Vietnam only one, two percent?
70
We have to move ahead because we have content.
71
We not should move ahead,
72
but in one way we need to protect we need to collaborate with other publishers
73
and we need to work very closely with the Vietnam Publishers Association,
74
we need to work closely with the Vietnam authority of publishing,
75
printing and book distribution and even we need to work closely with Vietnam
76
Ministry of Public Security if we have good protection of the copyright
77
so we will have more best book bestseller books coming from other languages to Vietnam.
78
Thank you for being with us today.
79
Thank you.
