3 -Minute Trading Coach Welcome to the 3 -Minute Trading Coach.
2
I'm Brett Steenbarger.
3
And today we're going to talk about an aspect of trading that usually is not discussed.
4
Who are we trading for?
5
Now, we have an account.
6
We're trading for our account.
7
The account might be our account.
8
The account might be a family account.
9
But for the most part, we are trading for ourselves.
10
And when we trade for ourselves,
11
then our trading becomes somewhat a reflection on us and our success.
12
We want to be successful in our trading,
13
and in fact, you see often in people's participation online that they're emphasizing what they've seen,
14
what they've done, what they know, as a way of feeling good about themselves, because they're trading for themselves.
15
Well, I took a vacation recently, and it was a big vacation,
16
a family reunion, where we flew in all of our children and grandchildren and spent time in a large vacation home.
17
And it was a wonderful time, and it was a wonderful time away from markets.
18
I hit upon an idea that I'm following up on and that so far is working out quite well.
19
The idea is that I'm making my trading account,
20
my trust fund, so to speak, for my grandchildren.
21
In other words, I'm not really trading for myself.
22
I'm trading for them.
23
And this is going to be part of the legacy that I leave to them.
24
Now notice how that changes everything in the psychology of trading.
25
If I'm trading to leave money to a loved one or a group of loved ones,
26
am I really going to violate my rules?
27
Am I really going to go on tilt?
28
Well, if my trading is not an ego affair,
29
if my trading is a gift to someone else,
30
I'm not going to spoil that gift with selfish, motivated behavior.
31
And so what I'm finding is that it's important to focus on what we trade.
32
It's important to focus on how we trade.
33
But maybe it's important also to focus on who we are trading for.
34
Am I trading for my family?
35
Am I trading for my future?
36
Am I trading for others who I love?
37
Am I trading for a cause that I want to give to?
38
If there is a larger meaning and purpose to our trading,
39
maybe, just maybe, that will bring out the best in what we do as traders.
