Hi class, we are going to be reading a story called Dolphins.
2
This is a nonfiction story and it is about dolphins.
3
It's written by Emily Burke.
4
The focus question is, what is a dolphin?
5
And then we have some words to know and we'll go over those as we read.
6
Now we know a lot of times when we have nonfiction books, especially when they're about a science or social studies topic,
7
we have a table of contents and that is true here.
8
So we can look at the table of contents to tell us what this story is going to be about
9
or to find different topics within the topic of dolphins that we're interested in. So here we go.
10
The introduction.
11
dolphins live in every ocean in the world some even live in rivers
12
and then we can see down here there's a little heading
13
on this really adorable picture of a dolphin it says this
14
kind of dolphin lives in a muddy river over time its eyes have become weak
15
because it can see it can't see through the mud
16
so it doesn't really use his eyes that much
17
because it can't see through the mud that's interesting
18
and here's another beautiful picture of a mother dolphin with her
19
baby most dolphin mothers are pregnant for about a year some
20
can be pregnant for 18 months before they give birth to a baby
21
so it says dolphins are mammals dolphins are mammals they can
22
keep their body warm dolphins mothers dolphin mothers make milk for
23
babies they do not lay eggs instead their babies are born live dolphins are mammals okay
24
that means they're warm-blooded
25
so they can keep their own bodies warm they don't lay
26
eggs they give birth to live babies they feed their babies milk
27
dolphins breathe air through a hole in their head so we breathe air through our nose and sometimes our mouths.
28
Dolphins have a hole up here called a blowhole, and that's how they breathe air.
29
Dolphins breathe air through a hole in their head.
30
Most of the time, dolphins breathe a few times a minute.
31
They can hold their breath for more than a minute when they need to.
32
and it says that the hole
33
that dolphins used to breathe is called a blowhole then it says wowzer and
34
when i see wowzer with an exclamation mark i know that's
35
probably going to be a fun fact don't you think it
36
says dolphins don't sleep for hours at a time like most
37
animals instead they rest part of their brain for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
38
because parts of their brain are still working dolphins stay near the surface while asleep.
39
This way they can get air when they need it while they sleep.
40
Dolphins even keep one eye open.
41
Wow, sounds to me like they never really get a good rest.
42
Oops, I need to go back.
43
I missed a page.
44
All about dolphins.
45
Dolphins are different sizes.
46
They can be big or small.
47
Do you know?
48
There are almost 40 kinds of dolphins.
49
Killer whales or orcas are the largest.
50
They can be 10 meters long.
51
Maui are the smallest type of dolphin.
52
They are only one meter.
53
That's four feet long.
54
That's not very long.
55
So here we have the orca.
56
We have Rizzo's dolphin.
57
We have the common dolphin.
58
I think that's the one we see when we go to the beach and we see the dolphins in the ocean.
59
Okay, let's see.
60
Some dolphins only have four teeth.
61
Others have more than 200 teeth.
62
Dolphins do not use their teeth to chew.
63
They use their teeth to grab onto food.
64
They grab food.
65
They use their teeth to grab food when they eat it.
66
Okay?
67
What do we use to grab things?
68
We use our hands, don't we?
69
Dolphins sometimes scratch each other's skin with their teeth.
70
That's called raking.
71
And that seems to me like if a dolphin's doing that raking, that's probably something they do with their family members.
72
Like if somebody scratches your head or your back or something.
73
Oh, and look, here's some more dolphins.
74
Each side of a dolphin's tail is called a fluke.
75
So here's one fluke and here's the other fluke.
76
Dolphins move their tails up and down to swim.
77
A fin on their back keeps them steady.
78
A flipper on each side helps them steer.
79
Like when you steer when you're riding your bike, you use your handlebars, right?
80
The dolphin uses its flippers.
81
So look at the parts of the dolphin.
82
We have two flukes.
83
We have a fin, a blowhole, a mouth, and two flippers.
84
Aren't they cute?
85
Dolphins and sound.
86
Dolphins are smart.
87
Dolphins use sound to talk to other dolphins.
88
Dolphins also use sound to find food.
89
Dolphins use clicks, whistles, and squeaks to talk to each other.
90
Scientists think each dolphin also has its own sound.
91
And they use sound to find food, kind of like bats do.
92
They make noise, and the noise echoes back to them.
93
It's called echolocation.
94
Oh, look at all those dolphins there.
95
A group of dolphin uses a bait ball to hunt.
96
A school of fish forms a tight ball.
97
Some dolphins swim around the ball to keep fish from swimming away.
98
Others stay below to keep watch.
99
Dolphins take turns swimming into the ball to feed.
100
When a dolphin hunts, first it makes clicking sounds.
101
Next, it listens and waits for echoes to bounce off a fish or squid.
102
Then the dolphin can attack.
103
So these dolphins are acting like a team to swim around the fish and make the fish come together.
104
It says up here, I didn't read the heading, I should have.
105
Some ways the dolphins hunt.
106
And then look, dolphins swim around a bait ball.
107
Here they are, they're so cute, aren't they? dolphin groups.
108
Dolphins are playful animals.
109
They blow rings of bubbles and they even play catch with pieces of seaweed.
110
Oh my goodness, they have so much fun.
111
Okay, dolphin groups.
112
Dolphins live in groups called pods.
113
They live in pods to find food and keep each other safe.
114
dolphins move from pod to pod sometimes they change pods more
115
than once a day that's interesting they have more than one
116
group of like friends huh most pods have as many as
117
12 dolphins mothers form pods with other mothers to protect their
118
babies even after they leave young dolphins may return to swim
119
with their mother some female dolphins even return to raise their babies with their own mother.
120
How cute.
121
So the babies get raised with their grandmother.
122
Young dolphins stay with their mother for as long as six years.
123
And this is our conclusion that we see here is these four dolphins here.
124
Hector's dolphins, white beak dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, and Indo-Pacific dolphin.
125
Conclusion.
126
There are many different kinds of dolphins.
127
They all use sound to talk and find food.
128
Most dolphins form close groups.
129
Dolphins are amazing animals.
130
Okay, and these are some of the words we read.
131
Female is of or relating to or being a plant or animal that can make babies, eggs, or seeds.
132
We know to grab is to take a hold of in a quick, strong way.
133
We usually grab with our hands.
134
And we learned, and some of us might have already known, mammals are warm-blooded animals with backbone, hair, or fur.
135
They make milk, and they have babies that are born live.
136
Pods are groups of dolphins or whales that live together.
137
And to protect is to keep something safe and to steer that's to turn or move in a new direction.
138
Okay, I thought that was a really nice story.
139
I hope you enjoyed it and we are going to be learning a lot about dolphins this week.
