1
I don't know how to teach it to you except for I hope suffering happens to you.
2
One of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations.
3
People with very high expectations have very low resilience.
4
And unfortunately, resilience matters in success.
5
And greatness is not intelligence, as you know.
6
Greatness comes from character, and character isn't formed out of smart people.
7
It's formed out of people who suffered.
8
I'm about to tell you things I've never told anyone, not even my family.
9
I was an immigrant, and when I came in 1973, I was nine.
10
My older brother was almost 11, and this was a foreign country.
11
There was nothing easy about that.
12
I had all kinds of jobs.
13
We went to a school that included a lot of chores.
14
I was the youngest kid in school, and so all of the other kids got the hard work, and I got the easy job.
15
I was nine years old.
16
I had to clean all the bathrooms.
17
I never felt that I got the easy job, but that was my job, and that was my job.
18
And so I did it delightfully.
19
And then everything that I was doing, I wanted to do the best I could.
20
My first job before before CEO was a dishwasher.
21
And I did that very well.
22
I planned my work.
23
I was organized.
24
You know, I was Mison Plus.
25
And then I washed the living daylights out of the dishes.
26
And then, you know, they promoted me to bus.
27
I was certain I'm the best busboy Denny's ever had.
28
You know, I never left the station empty handed.
29
I never came back empty handed.
30
I was very efficient.
31
And so anyways, eventually I became, you know, a CEO.
32
I'm still working on being a good CEO.
33
So the thing is, when you want to build something great, it's not easy to do.
34
And when you're doing something that's not easy to do, you're not always enjoying it.
35
I don't love every day of my job.
36
I don't think every day brings me joy, nor does joy have to be the definition of a good day.
37
And every day I'm not happy.
38
Every year I'm not happy about the company.
39
but I love the company every single second.
40
And so I think that what people misunderstand is somehow the best jobs are the one
41
that brings you happiness all the time.
42
I don't think that that's right.
43
You have to suffer.
44
You have to struggle.
45
You have to endeavor.
46
You have to do those hard things and work through it in order to really appreciate what you've done.
47
And there are no such thing that are great that was easy to do.
48
I would say, therefore, I wish upon you greatness, which by my way of saying it, I wish upon you plenty of plenty of suffering.
49
But how does a dishwasher become one of the richest men on earth?
50
Building a video turned out to have been a million times harder than I expected it to be.
51
If you want to do extraordinary things, it shouldn't be easy.
52
I think that that's kind of the superpower of a entrepreneur.
53
They don't know how hard it is, and they only ask themselves, how hard can it be?
54
And to this day, I trick my brain into thinking, how hard can it be?
55
You have to get yourself to believe that it's not that hard, because it's way harder than you think.
56
At Nvidia, I experienced failures.
57
Great big ones.
58
All humiliating and embarrassing.
59
Many nearly doomed us.
60
Nvidia was almost out of money.
61
Jensen had just taken the biggest contract in the company's history.
62
But he quickly realized something.
63
If they kept going, Nvidia would head in the wrong direction.
64
But if they walked away from the deal, the company might not survive.
65
Either way, we would be out of business.
66
I contacted the CEO of Sega and explained that our invention was the wrong approach.
67
We had to stop.
68
But I needed Sega to pay us in whole.
69
Or NVIDIA would be out of business.
70
I was embarrassed to ask.
71
The CEO of Sega, to his credit, and my amazement, agreed.
72
His understanding and generosity gave us six months to live.
73
With that, we built Reva 128, just as we were running out of money, and saved the company.
74
Confronting our mistake and with humility, asking for help, saved NVIDIA.
75
I learned early that being CEO is not about power, but the responsibility that comes with keeping the company alive.
76
We learn never to see failure as the opposite of success.
77
Each failure is just another learning moment, a humility moment, a character strengthening moment.
78
The resilience forged through setbacks is what gives you the strength to go again.
79
In 2008, Nvidia's stock crashed nearly 80%.
80
Very few people knew this company would one day become the most valuable in the world.
81
So how did Jensen make it through?
82
When your share price drops 80%, it's a little embarrassing.
83
You don't want to get out of your bed, you don't want to leave the house.
84
All of that is true.
85
But then you go back to just doing your job.
86
I woke up at the same time, prioritized my day in the same way.
87
Always got checked back to the core.
88
What do you believe?
89
What are the most important things?
90
Family loves me?
91
Okay, check.
92
And so you just gotta check it off and then go back to work.
93
Do you believe in it?
94
Did something change?
95
The stock price changed, but did something else change?
96
Did physics change?
97
Did gravity change?
98
Did all of the things that we assumed, that we believed, that led to our decision, did any of those things change?
99
Because if those things change, you got to change everything.
100
But if none of those things change, you change nothing.
101
Keep on going.
102
You do things based on core beliefs.
103
We deeply believe that we could create a computer that solves problems normal processing can't do.
104
You know, have a core belief.
105
Gut check it every day.
106
Pursue it with all your might.
107
Pursue it for a very long time.
108
Surround yourself with people you love and take them on that right.
109
That's the story of NVIDIA.
110
AI is changing every industry on earth, and Jensen thinks most people still don't understand what's coming.
111
You're not going to lose your job to AI.
112
You're going to lose your job to somebody who uses AI.
113
Your company is not going to go out of business because of AI.
114
Your company is going to go out of business because another company used AI.
115
You have no choice but to get engaged as quickly as you can.
116
Don't fall behind.
117
You don't have to be the first company to take advantage of AI, but don't be the last.
118
English, by the way, human, is the best programming language of the future.
119
You all know how to prompt the computer to make it do things.
120
You're at the beginning, at the starting line of AI.
121
What will you create?
122
Whatever it is, run after it like we did.
123
Run, don't walk.
124
Remember, either you're running for food or you are running from becoming food.
125
Either way, run.
126
After all the failures, all the suffering, and all the success, Jensen's message is surprisingly simple.
127
Find work that gives you great joy, or just fall in love with whatever work you do.
128
That's the only way you're going to do your best work.
129
That's the only way you're going to do exquisite work.
130
Instead of working for a living, think of it as your life's work.
131
I wish for you to love your work as much as I've loved my work.
132
Lori, my kids, my family, the nearly 6,000 employees at NVIDIA,
133
and everybody I've ever worked with in the computer industry knows I love my work.
134
NVIDIA is my life's work.
135
I work from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed, and I work seven days a week.
136
When I'm not working, I'm thinking about working.
137
I'm obsessed about GPUs.
138
I mean, what can you do?
139
Our purpose, almost all of our purposes, should be to go and do something that has never been done before,
140
that is insanely hard to do, that if you achieve it, could make a real contribution.
141
I do every single morning exactly the same way.
142
I begin each morning by doing my highest priority work first.
143
I have a very clear priority list and I start from the highest priority work first.
144
Before I even get to work, my day is already a success.
145
It is the most extraordinary thing, Bill, that a normal dishwasher busboy could grow up to be this.
146
There's no magic, it's just 61 years of hard work every single day.
147
I don't think there's anything more than that.
148
More importantly, we developed agility and a culture of resilience.
149
One setback after another, we shook it off and skated to the next opportunity.
150
Each time, we gain skills and strengthen our character.
151
Our company is really hard to distract and really hard to discourage.
152
No setback that comes our way doesn't look like an opportunity these days.
153
I hope you believe in something, something unconventional, something unexplored.
154
But let it be informed and let it be reasoned.
155
Then dedicate yourself to making it happen.
156
You may find your GPU.
157
You may find your CUDA.
158
You may find your generative AI.
159
You may find your NVIDIA.
160
I hope you will see setbacks as new opportunities.
161
Your pain and suffering will strengthen your character, your resilience and agility, and they are the ultimate superpowers.
162
Of all of the things that I value most about my abilities, intelligence is not top of that list.
163
My ability to endure pain and suffering, my ability to work on something for a very, very long period of time,
164
my ability to handle setbacks and see the opportunity just around the corner, I consider to be my superpowers.
165
And I hope they're yours.
166
And I hope you find a craft.
167
It's not important to decide on day one.
168
It's not even important to decide anytime soon.
169
But I hope you do find a craft
170
that you want to dedicate your lifetime to perfecting and let it be your life's work.
171
Do you like my jacket?
172
Yes!
173
This is what my wife bought for me, and this is what I'm wearing.
174
To me, no task is beneath me because remember, I used to be a dishwasher, and I mean that.
