1
Hi, I'm Cillian.
2
It is an absolute treat to be in this tiny little room full of incredible films.
3
So this movie, La Piscine, this movie will make you want to move to France.
4
Certainly at the beginning, the beautiful thing about this film is it's all about what isn't said
5
and like all the subtext and all the energies that are happening between the characters.
6
But by the end of the movie you will not want to move to France.
7
So I'm gonna pop that in there.
8
I actually watched this movie on Criterion channel relatively recently,
9
Rosetta by their Dardenne brothers they're these just tremendous Belgian brothers that make these beautiful,
10
compassionate film about, I guess, real life.
11
And this is a film about a young girl who's living in a caravan park
12
and her mum's an alcoholic and she's just trying to hold everything together
13
and she eventually gets a job like working in a waffle stall
14
and it sounds so tiny the story
15
but it's actually huge in its themes it'll make you cry
16
it's exactly my type of film it's very sad actually
17
because Emily Dequan who was the main actress who was really young when She passed away this year,
18
so she's magnificent in this.
19
So, big, much respect to her.
20
I'm gonna take that.
21
Maybe everybody picks cassavetes.
22
Now, this is very special to me because in like, in like the early 2000s,
23
I was in America and I wasn't really happy with the sort of work I was doing
24
and I wasn't really happy with my approach to acting and everyone was like, man, you gotta watch Cassavetes.
25
And like, it was kind of embarrassing that I hadn't watched it by then.
26
So I went out and I bought this collection.
27
And over a weekend, myself and my wife, we watched every single film on this.
28
I mean, the standout movie for me is a woman under the influence.
29
But the other nice anecdote about this box set is that I then made a movie in LA that year,
30
and the makeup artist who was doing my makeup, I was telling her about how much I love this woman on the influence, and she says, oh, Gina Rowlands, she's a good friend of mine.
31
And I said, would you ever mind, would you mind asking Gina Rowlands to sign this?
32
So she signed my DVD version of this.
33
And then I went out and bought the Blu-ray.
34
So I have two of these, so I don't really need a third.
35
But it had a huge influence then on me once I discovered him, as it does on everybody who discovers Cassavetes.
36
This is, again, another, these are quite formative films for me.
37
This is a film that I watched when it came out in the cinema.
38
A film by Michael Haneke.
39
Not one of his probably, I guess like, L'amour or Funny Games,
40
or you know, they're kind of his more well-known movies.
41
This is called Code Unknown.
42
I didn't quite know what I was watching at the time.
43
Juliette Binoche is the main character in it, but it's kind of fragmented storytelling.
44
The opening sequence of this movie you will never forget.
45
I certainly have never forgotten.
46
It's this huge, long one take, and it's just this sort of altercation
47
that happens on a street it's like this heavy themes
48
and they're like race and immigration but it's magnificent
49
and I remember at
50
that time falling in love with those those want those beautiful one take take shots
51
and it's always remained with me so hardly recommend code unknown by Annika.
52
So look at this.
53
This is absolutely a thing of beauty.
54
So this is the Wes Anderson archive.
55
So it's 10 films over 25 years.
56
I mean, it could not be more Wes Anderson.
57
It's absolutely a beautiful thing.
58
During COVID, my kids were, you know, just getting into movies and we watched every single one of Wes Anderson's movies.
59
Can I have this?
60
Yes.
61
Don't have a little bit in the bag.
62
Amazing.
63
I mean, could stay in here all day.
