1
Tipping.
2
It's a big part of life here in the United States.
3
And it can be confusing.
4
even for people who live here.
5
How much should you tip?
6
When should you tip?
7
And is it 10 %?
8
15 % or 20 %?
9
And what happens if you don't tip at all?
10
Today, I'm going to explain American tipping culture in an easy and simple way.
11
Let's start!
12
The most common place to tip is at a full -service restaurant like the one I'm in right now.
13
A normal tip for good service is around 15 to 25 percent. But...
14
Why is it so high?
15
When the server brings your bill, He or she will bring you two coffees.
16
One for the restaurant or the merchant coffee and one for you.
17
On your copy, there's a line that says "tip".
18
So my total for my food is $34 .95.
19
But I do have to tip my server for her service.
20
So if I leave a tip, the total will be a lot higher than I thought.
21
So you're not just paying for your meal.
22
I'm not only paying $34 .95.
23
I'm going to be paying 15 to 25 % more because I do have to leave a tip.
24
Also, I do want to add that if you are with a group of six or more people at your table, some restaurants will add an automatic tip,
25
which means that the tip is already included with your order.
26
So if you are with a big group of people,
27
Go ahead and check that bill and check for gratuity and it'll be 18 to 20 % already added to your bill.
28
And why am I telling you that?
29
Well, one time I went out with a big group of friends.
30
And of course, I didn't know the restaurant already had a tip included in the receipt.
31
So when I received the bill, I put a tip amount in this section without looking at the original price with the tip already included.
32
I'm telling you this to be careful and double check the receipt to make sure you don't leave a double tip.
33
But if the service was really good and you do want to leave a double tip, That's totally fine, but I do know some people don't know the rules here in America.
34
So make sure and double check if you are sitting with a group of six or more people.
35
Just ask the restaurant if the tip is already included in the check.
36
Why do we tip so much and where does the system come from?
37
Well, in many states, restaurant workers, especially servers, earn a sub -minimum wage.
38
That means their wage is a lot lower than the normal minimum wage.
39
And that's the reason why many servers and restaurant workers depend on tips, because most of their income comes from that.
40
The idea is that this encourages better service.
41
So, the more attentive and more friendly your server is, the more likely you are able to tip well, your server will make more money.
42
And this is all based on a performance -based payment system.
43
But what happens if you don't tip well or at all?
44
For a server, that's just not a bad day.
45
It can essentially mean they worked for free or even lost money,
46
since they often have to tip out a portion of their tips to bussers or other workers in the restaurant.
47
This is a high -stakes system for them.
48
But now, let's go ahead and ask my server, Evelyn, what she thinks about tipping culture in America.
49
This is my wonderful server, Evelyn.
50
She took care of me today.
51
So, Evelyn, what do you think about tipping culture? in every restaurant.
52
Like here, we make a little bit more below minimum wage just because we do make bigger tips.
53
Tipping is not always necessary by any means.
54
If you can't tip, you can't tip.
55
It's honestly appreciated but as someone who mainly works for tips um it's a little frustrating
56
when i do get stepped or
57
when somebody doesn't tip like according to the bell have you
58
had times where someone left like zero tips uh yes all
59
the time um it could either depend on they felt as
60
if they didn't get as good service or they didn't like the food Anything can go into it.
61
I've had times where I've gotten zero tips, but I've had times where I've gotten up to $300 at a time.
62
So since you work as a server, how do you tip in real life?
63
Like, do you tip at restaurants?
64
Do you tip at cafes?
65
I tip everywhere, even on DoorDash and deliveries.
66
I typically tip always 20%.
67
And then if it's really great service, I go beyond that.
68
And then here's your tip.
69
Thank you so much.
70
Thank you.
71
I just tipped my server in cash.
72
So on the receipt, I'm going to write Cash tip.
73
and then I will add my total which is $34 .95
74
but in theory I did give her $20
75
and now I will sign the receipt and I will do that to the other copy too.
76
Talking about tips did you know the word tip has so many different meanings?
77
It really depends on if you're using tip as a verb so an action word or as a noun, meaning a thing.
78
Depending on the situation, when tip is a verb, it can mean to make something lean, fall, or accidentally push it over.
79
For example, "Oops, I accidentally tipped the glass of water." Tip can also mean to secretly give someone information.
80
"Someone tipped the police off about the robbery," meaning they told the police secretly.
81
Tip can also mean to touch something, very lightly or quickly.
82
She tipped her hat to greet someone.
83
Just a quick touch of the hat.
84
And of course, the one we all probably know.
85
To give a small amount of money for a service.
86
Did you tip the taxi driver?
87
Now when tip is a noun, it also has many different meanings.
88
For example, the very end or top part of something.
89
The tip of a pen, the tip of an iceberg, or the tip of your finger.
90
Tip can also mean a piece of advice or a helpful suggestion.
91
She gave me a useful tip for baking.
92
As you can see, tip is an incredibly versatile word with many meanings.
93

107
Now let's get back to learning more about tipping culture in the US.
108
Tipping at a bar is a little bit different but just as important.
109
if you have a tab.
110
Here's a quick tip if you do order a drink at the bar.
111
Think of the tip as the price of the drink.
112
So for example, if you order a cocktail that costs $10, you'll probably want a tip around $2 to $3 for that.
113
So instead of paying $10, the cocktail will be $1 .00.
114
$13.
115
That's the price you'll pay.
116
If you're not willing to pay for a tip, that's totally fine, but you'll probably not want to go to a bar.
117
Instead, it's probably better to just drink at home.
118
But now, let's go ahead and ask the bartender what she thinks of tipping.
119
Hi, Sierra.
120
What is the process like to tip at a bar?
121
Basically, they tip either 18, 20, or 25 % of however much the total is.
122
So here it'll show you 18, 20 and 25%.
123
So instead of having to do the math, it does it for you.
124
And you can just check mark the box and sign.
125
- Do you basically live on tips, I guess?
126
- Yeah, so our hourly wage is gonna be significantly less than anywhere else.
127
And we basically live off tips.
128
- Have you ever been in a circumstance or position, someone just drank something and then they never left a tip?
129
- It has happened, but it's super rare.
130
It's not really etiquette to not tip.
131
Do you always tip wherever you go?
132
I over tip because I'm in the industry, yes.
133
Perfect, thank you so much.
134
Yeah, you're welcome.
135
This one is a bit tricky.
136
Right now, I'm inside a coffee shop.
137
So unlike a full -service restaurant, there are baristas working behind the counter.
138
And they're usually the ones that earn a full minimum wage.
139
So is tipping required here?
140
The new way of tipping, especially with those big tablet screens, can feel like you're under a lot of pressure.
141
I mean, they're right in front of you, so it feels like everybody is watching.
142
But remember, you don't have to tip.
143
That being said, giving tips is a very kind gesture, especially for baristas, because remember, they earn a full minimum wage.
144
So when you do give tips, that increases their wage and makes a big difference in their take -home pay.
145
So a dollar or a couple of dollars in the tip jar will make them feel appreciated.
146
Hi, what do you think about tipping culture in the United States?
147
I think tipping is a way to show appreciation to workers, but also it's a two way street.
148
So like if I'm giving good servers, I don't expect that tip.
149
However, it's up to the customer to give the tip ultimately.
150
So, so do you normally tip at restaurants?
151
Oh, 100%.
152
Absolutely.
153
Yep.
154
Do people normally tip on this little iPad?
155
Or do they give cash tips?
156
Either or whatever is easier.
157
So if they have a car tip, you know, they'll do that or they have cash to do that as well.
158
I don't expect it, you know, but if they said it's great, but it's not whatever, you know, I'm not excited of it.
159
So And you don't expect it because you earn a full minimum wage unlike other restaurants, for example, where they live off their tips.
160
I would say so yeah, I would say so yeah, yeah, in a sense, you know, I earn a good wage.
161
So it's like, I don't need that tip necessarily.
162
But it's a way for, I guess, customers to like kind of show their appreciation, which is neat.
163
But again, I don't expect it as much.
164
Thank you so much.
165
Yeah, let's talk about another type of service.
166
Haircuts!
167
I'm here with a barber.
168
Do your clients tip you after a haircut?
169
Yeah, they normally do around 20 % from the price of a haircut.
170
And have your clients never given you a tip before?
171
It depends on the client and where they're from.
172
It's more like a culture thing.
173
You know, something that they do here in the United States is that they tip the barber.
174
Like, where I'm from is Venezuela and South America, and we don't like have to tip the barber.
175
Usually they put everything on the price tip you, right?
176
Yeah, I do.
177
As you can see, tips show appreciation and they are a big part of income for barbers and stylists.
178
A common tip is 20%, but it can be up to 25 to 30 % if it's a great service.
179
Tipping culture extends far beyond just restaurants and bars.
180
You'll find yourself tipping in many once they bring you back your keys and your car.
181
Hotel bellboys.
182
Yes, the people that bring your luggage or your suitcases up to your room.
183
It'll probably be a few dollars per bag.
184
Uber or Lyft drivers.
185
So the people that give you a ride to a certain place like an airport or to your hotel,
186
you can leave a tip easily on the app and it makes a huge difference because you are paying
187
you are ordering a service where they bring you your food directly to your door.
188
So this is a great way to appreciate the people doing this service for you.
189
Also, for spas, massages, or beauty treatments, I would recommend a tip 15 to 25%.
190
And remember, always, always check the receipt because some places add gratuity automatically.
191
Also, here are some extra tipping tips.
192
Always bring cash because workers can just bring it home that same day and it doesn't get taxed.
193
Now for the final and most confusing part where you don't tip.
194
The general rule of thumb is this: if you're at a fast food restaurant, a self -service counter where you literally just order your food,
195
or maybe a food court, you don't need to tip.
196
The person behind the counter is not a server, they are an employee earning a minimum wage, which right now it's actually $23.
197
So there you have it!
198
Tipping in America isn't a simple transaction,
199
It's part of how many workers get paid.
200
Understanding the why is what makes it a lot easier.
201
Bye!
202
