1
that we've seen you bear it all in a whole succession of roles.
2
I made myself a note.
3
You've appeared in your underwear, if not less, in Malcolm in the Middle, Trumbo, Wakefield, Breaking Bad.
4
Now, what's with it, Brian?
5
Is this an exhibitionist act or are you just able to subdue your vanity for a role?
6
Well, when you look at it on the surface, no pun intended, of it,
7
there is nothing more vulnerable than a person who is naked, figuratively or literally.
8
And aside from those years that we spent in middle school or high school,
9
when someone was publicly humiliated or embarrassed in public and the finger -pointing and the laughing and the giggling occurred,
10
what I appreciated about the maturity of human beings is that once they are mature,
11
they're in college or later, we don't laugh.
12
When we see someone who's hurting, someone who's vulnerable or in pain,
13
susceptible, publicly humiliated, we emotionally want to wrap our arms around them and protect them.
14
And that's the joyous part of a human experience.
15
And I count on that.
16
I count on audiences going, oh my God, I feel for him in his pain right now,
17
in his suffering, and I've been there.
18
They relate to it, and they don't want to see it.
19
And so they can cry with you or feel the depression or anxiety with you.
20
And then hopefully the playwright
21
and structure of the story lifts them up a little bit with you
22
so they can you pull them out of that together
23
and then you continue on with your story very well spoken well
24
that old saying
25
that luck is where opportunity meets experience tell me about how Breaking Bad came into your life it was just
26
that I was very lucky I did a I wrote
27
and directed a little movie independent movie out in the desert of california
28
and i kept delaying it
29
because i money kept coming in coming out coming in just
30
a couple hundred thousand dollars on 35 millimeter film we're hustling
31
trying to get this done it was a labor of love
32
uh it was it was fun it's it's called last chance it starred my wife
33
and we worked together it was beautiful but i delayed it
34
so many times
35
and i finally just said i can't delay it anymore i've
36
got to do this i came back into Los Angeles after
37
that and started editing
38
and two days after I was in LA again I got
39
a call from my agent saying there's a part on X -Files
40
that you might be right for do you want to work
41
oh yeah I could just use the opportunity to work I'm broke
42
so I went and auditioned I got it that episode of X -Files was written by Vince Gilligan.
43
He wrote a character that was despicable and ornery
44
and an anti -Semite and just a nasty human being who was in trouble.
45
And he wrote where despite his actions you still felt sympathies toward him.
46
And that was my first introduction to the depth of Vince Gilligan's writing.
47
Ten years later, after Malcolm in the Middle, Vince Gilligan contacted my agent and said,
48
I'd like to see Brian for this new series called Breaking Bad.
49
And I didn't remember him.
50
I remember, oh yeah, I remember the writer.
51
I don't remember what he looks like or what his name was.
52
And I read this script, and I went, oh, my.
53
But he was my champion to get that role
54
because of the fact that I was lucky enough to be in that episode of X -Files that he wrote and produced.
55
But he remembered it for 10 years.
56
He remembered me.
57
He remembered me.
58
I didn't remember him.
59
And he was my champion.
60
Without Vince Gilligan, someone else is sitting in this chair right now talking to you.
61
Now, true or untrue, that you, that Breaking Bad has meant so much to you, that you have a tattoo of it somewhere on your body.
62
Well, that is true. But Dan, I...
63
I can't show you where it is.
64
It's a little embarrassing.
65
No, I can't show you.
66
Come on, I was going to say you said it.
67
It's right here on my finger.
68
I don't know if you want to see it.
69
I got that.
70
I don't have any other tattoos.
71
I got this on the very last day of shooting Breaking Bad, and that is our symbol,
72
B -R -B -A, from the table of elements.
73
Now, as a person who's never been tattooed before, tell me about that
74
so we're working on the very last day of production of
75
Breaking Bad there are tears there's laughter there's embracing we know this was the end of something very special
76
and a lot of the crew we're talking about I'm gonna
77
get a tattoo I'm gonna get a tattoo I'm gonna crew guys they're gonna get tattoos
78
so much so
79
that I said we should hire a tattoo artist come to our party tonight let's do it there
80
and then I kept thinking about it what could I get a tattoo that's
81
so different it's not my generation you know
82
and i thought why not where would i get a tattoo
83
and so i i know i just thought you can't see it
84
because i'm an actor yeah so i didn't want it to be seen
85
and other people will say but you did people can't see
86
that and i go it's not for other people this is for me
87
and when i catch it i look at it and go wow
88
that was that was a seminal period in my life more of my interview with brian cranson when we come back
89
What I'd like to do is go down this list of roles.
90
And you tell me what was the most difficult thing about doing the character.
91
Let's start with Hal and Malcolm in the Middle.
92
Well, I smile.
93
I love playing him.
94
Hal was afraid of everything.
95
I wanted to be able to find the truth in fear with him,
96
that he could be afraid of every little thing that could happen to a person,
97
a bad husband, a bad father, lose his job, lose his identity, be alone, all these things,
98
afraid of spiders, afraid of heights, he was afraid of everything.
99
And so to try to find truth and honesty on that level, And once I found that,
100
I feel then the truth in the humor can then come out to that.
101
Difficult role when you play Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo.
102
He, I so enjoyed playing him.
103
He was a man of the times, a man seeking justice during the McCarthy era.
104
And the story was really who he was, is a man saying, don't be afraid of ideas.
105
That's not the thing to fear.
106
That's the thing to embrace, ideas, and especially the ones that differ from yours.
107
You may be a communist feminist, you may be a radical, you may be an ultra -conservative, you may be whatever.
108
But it is not to fear that, it is to embrace the strengths of that.
109
And ultimately that is what I see as the gift of America and our strength.
