1
Hello everyone, welcome back to English with Lucy.
2
Today I've got a video that will show you how you can ask native speakers anything.
3
Maybe you want to know what a word or phrase means, or the difference between two similar words.
4
Maybe you want to ask a question about culture, or maybe you want to help out other people that are trying to learn about your language and culture.
5
The team behind the app HiNative got in contact with me
6
and asked me if I would be interested in trying out their app and seeing if I liked it.
7
Well I did that, and I didn't just like it, I loved it.
8
It is such a good idea.
9
It's fantastic for those burning questions that a dictionary just can't answer.
10
Sometimes you have questions that you need to ask a native person.
11
So today I'm going to show you, with the help of HiNative, how you can ask native speakers speakers anything.
12
So firstly, what is HiNative?
13
Well, it's a culture and language Q&A question and answer application.
14
You can ask native people questions about their language or their culture.
15
The app supports over 110 languages, so if you're interested in languages apart from English, this will work for you as well.
16
It works on both Android and iPhones, but But you can also use it in your web browser on your computer.
17
It's great for advanced users, but it's also really good for beginners because it has special forms that help you ask the question in a precise way.
18
I'll show you that in a minute.
19
The best thing about it, it's free.
20
I know, unbelievable.
21
It does have a premium version which includes a few extra features, but the majority of it is absolutely free and it's completely usable.
22
so it's perfect for anybody on a budget.
23
You can even upload voice recordings of you speaking
24
and get real feedback from real native speakers and they can even reply to you with audio messages.
25
So it really is amazing.
26
Now, I've used the app a couple of times before, but I am going to create a new account with you guys
27
so you see exactly how to do it and how easy it is, so let's get started with that.
28
Okay so I've just downloaded the HiNative app.
29
Obviously I've already had a look at it
30
but I want to go from the beginning to show you guys exactly how you can do it
31
and how easy it is.
32
So let's open the app.
33
So you can sign up with Twitter, Facebook or Lang8 and you can also sign up with with your email account.
34
So I'm going to sign up with my email account then.
35
So my username will be English Lucy.
36
My email is hello at English with Lucy.co.uk and my password.
37
Okay, I'm going to choose my native language.
38
Now I'm going to pretend that I'm a foreign person here
39
so I'm going to choose Spanish I think from Spain and I want to learn British English.
40
There we are, okay.
41
Next.
42
Yes of course I want the newsletter.
43
Right, I'm going to have a go at asking some more questions.
44
So, there are lots of different options you can ask does this sound natural?
45
So the does this sound natural part means that I can write something
46
and a native person will respond to me and tell me whether it sounds like natural English or not.
47
Okay, let's test this out then.
48
Let's see if I can make a small mistake.
49
What will I say?
50
I went to the shop for to buy potatoes.
51
Okay, so I will post that then.
52
And then people will vote whether it sounds natural, a little unnatural, unnatural, or I don't understand.
53
Okay.
54
Now there's something really special about the does this sound natural option, because you can record yourself reading out the sentence and people will tell you if your English sounds natural or not.
55
And I know a lot of you will love that feature
56
because I receive a lot of voice messages in my Facebook inbox.
57
So, let's try.
58
The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane.
59
It's a sentence to practice the A sound.
60
So, the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane.
61
Right, so I will post that.
62
Right, let's have another go.
63
What does this mean?
64
What does?
65
Okay, let's say to have cold feet.
66
Let's see what people say about that one.
67
Okay, what's the difference then?
68
Okay, what about can and jar?
69
That's one I've had the other day.
70
So what's the difference between can and jar?
71
Great.
72
Okay.
73
Right.
74
You can also have a free question where you can ask things about culture.
75
Okay.
76
Well, let's ask.
77
When do people from the UK normally eat lunch.
78
Okay, right.
79
Posted that.
80
Right, so I've left it a little while, no longer than 15 minutes,
81
and I'm now going to check all the responses I've had for my questions.
82
So, oh, I've had a lot.
83
Right, so, what is the difference between jar and can?
84
Look!
85
This amazing person has responded with pictures.
86
So, we've got can.
87
These are examples of cans.
88
A can of Coke, a can of beans, and an example of a jar.
89
Fantastic.
90
So people can respond with pictures.
91
And that explains it better than any words.
92
Okay, then we've got...
93
People are saying it sounds a little unnatural or unnatural.
94
Yep, someone has said I went to the shop to buy potatoes.
95
So that four, that incorrect four, was taken out.
96
Fabulous.
97
What does cold feet, to have cold feet, mean?
98
Oh look, this fantastic person has responded again.
99
They say, not literally, to feel like you're about to change your mind to change
100

101

102

103
one the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane six
104
people said I sound natural one person said I sound a little bit unnatural who is
105
