1
Hey, how's it going? What's your name? Where are you from?
2
I'm Marianna, and I'm from Portugal.
3
So for me, something that I was a little disappointed, 저는 조금 실망했던 게 하나 있는데, it was maybe in my opinion, 물론 제 개인적인 의견이지만, of course, when I thought about South Korea, 한국에 오기 전에는, I thought about like shopping a lot of clothes.
4
But to be honest, the Korean girls, they are very beautiful. They are amazing, but their style is very basic.
5
Like the clothes you see to buy, it's very like basic, 매장에서 파는 옷들도 정말 기본적인 스타일이 많고, like very natural, white, black, beige, 자연스러운 느낌에 흰색, 검은색, 베이지색처럼, no, no, a lot of colors.
6
I think this was a little bit disappointing, I think.
7
so what you're saying is there's like not a lot of variation.
8
Very like clean girl vibes.
9
It's not bad, but it's not like too funny 나쁜 건 아닌데 옷을 많이 사고 싶다는 to buy a lot of clothes, whatever.
10
I think this was a little bit disappointing.
11
A lot of like same, same.
12
Yes, all of them, they use the same I think, but it's not bad. It's just like too basic for me maybe.
13
Opposite question.
14
What's something that's like underrated?
15
The nightlife here, it's amazing.
16
I love it so, so much.
17
At first because it's really fun,
18
like I think the people don't know how fun it is.
19
It's very fun.
20
I'm not a person who goes to clubs in Portugal a lot, 포르투갈에서는 클럽에 자주 가는 편이 아닌데, but here, it's so nice, that I want to go like every week.
21
It's easy.
22
And also it's so, so safe,
23
because I think when you go to club here, 여기서는 클럽에 가도 남자들이 the guys don't want like flirty with you.
24
They are not flirting with you. It's very safe, I think. It's really good.
25
And also the girls here, 그리고 여기 여자들도 at least from my experience, they are so nice. They are so kind. Every time I go out, 엄청 다정해요. 나갈 때마다, the girls are like saying, "Oh, you're so beautiful. Oh, where are you from?" It's amazing, really.
26
It's amazing for me.
27
so you feel really welcomed.
28
Really, really, from the girls really.
29
And the guys, they never flirt,
30
they never complain with nothing, so it's really safe. It's amazing.
31
I feel very comfortable here, very, very cool.
32
Question for you.
33
Yeah. 네. I'm married, but I'm curious about, maybe are you single?
34
I am single.
35
Okay, I want to know a single person's perspective.
36
You said the guys never flirt with you. What if you want them to flirt with you? Then what?
37
Then it's kind of sad, I think.
38
Because I think if you do the first step,
39
if you give the first step, maybe you have a chance, you know? But I think they will never give the first step.
40
So if you come here- 그러니까 한국에 오면...
41
Ah, make a move, right?
42
Yeah, make a move.
43
If you want to flirt with someone, 누군가에게 호감을 표현하고 싶다면 if you want to have something with a Korean man or girl, 그게 한국인 남자든 여자든, whatever, I think you should do your first move 누군가와 관계를 시작해 보고 싶다면, 먼저 행동해야 하는 것 같아요.
44
because otherwise, if you're shy, nevermind.
45
I think you'll be single forever, I think.
46
So the woman sometimes should make the move.
47
I think so for my experience. I don't know.
48
Okay, is that different from Portugal?
49
Yes, absolutely.
They make their first move, they speak with you first, 남자들이 먼저 다가와요. 먼저 말을 걸고, they want to have a date with you, 데이트도 먼저 신청하고, like they invite you first. It's different, yeah.
51
Which style do you like better in terms of how men approach?
52
That's different because maybe for a relationship, 그건 좀 달라요. I would prefer maybe here for what I listen for.
53
Like they are more kind. They are more careful with you.
54
Gentle.
55
Gentle, yeah.
56
But maybe for friendships, maybe there in Portugal,
57
they are more extroverted maybe.
58
I don't know, depends.
59
Overall, you're enjoying your time in Korea?
60
A lot, I want to come back.
61
If I could, I would live here. Really, I love it here.
62
Are you enjoying also a lot?
63
Yeah, I've been here for 12 years.
64
12 years?
65
Yeah. 네. You live here?
66
Yeah, for 12 years.
67
Oh my god.
68
I'm old.
69
Do I look old?
70
No, no, no. It's not the thing about you being old. It's like you live here a long time.
71
Wow, I was not expecting that much time here.
72
Yeah, I came here right after university, 네, 저는 대학 졸업하자마자 와서 and I've just been working here 계속 여기서 일하면서, and I have kind of like a career here now, so.
73
That's amazing.
74
Hi, I'm Henry and I'm from California.
75
One of the things, like obviously 아무래도 한국하면 like the stereotype of Korea is like K-pop is so huge 대표적인 이미지가 K-pop이잖아요. 정말 엄청나게 and massive and like the Korean culture part 유명하고, 한국 문화를 대표하는 부분이기도 하고요.
76
and maybe I'm not like in the areas for that, 제가 그런 곳을 많이 못 찾은 걸 수도 있지만 but I'd say it hasn't been like as big of a part as I would have assumed.
77
Opposite, is there something that shocked you?
78
You were blown away, you were surprised? Wow, this part of Korea is amazing.
79
I would say like the hospitality and the services that I've gotten here,
80
like when I first got here I got a haircut, 처음 한국에 왔을 때 머리를 잘랐는데, and it was like excellent haircut, 정말 마음에 들었어요.
81
one of the best ones I've had.
82
Ever, okay.
83
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
84
And like, just they take care of you well.
85
I went and got a massage. It was a great massage.
86
Excellent service.
87
And then like going out to like the bars 그리고 술집이나 and clubs and stuff, like all the people 클럽에 가 봐도, 거기서 일하는 who are working there, of course, 직원분들이, 물론 그분들은 their job's to like make sure you like stay in there, 일이니까 손님에게 잘해주는 거겠지만 but they've all been like so positive, 정말 다들 친절하고, and you get free bottles and stuff so. I didn't like expect that coming into it.
88
So it's like the nightlife has been great.
89
And then like the service of even like the restaurant workers, 그리고 식당 직원분들까지, everybody just seems like to be on top of their game, 다들 자기가 맡은 일을 정말 잘하는 것 같았어요.
90
offering like the best that they can.
91
Would you say people here take more pride in their job?
92
I would say that.
93
Versus back home, like you do your job as good 제 고향에서는, 해고당하지 않을 정도로만 as you need to to not get fired 일을 하는 경우가 많거든요.
94
and of course, that doesn't apply to everybody,
95
but I would say I definitely noticed it here more, 그래도 여기에서는, 자기 일에 대한 자부심이나, that like pride in the work 손님을 환영하는 마음, and pride in like making people feel welcome 그리고 다시 찾아오고 싶게 만들려는 마음이, and like want you to come back.
96
Hey, how's it going? What's your name? Where are you from?
97
My name is Nasila, and I'm from France.
98
I just saw a TikTok yesterday night, 어젯밤에 틱톡을 하나 봤는데, saying that the convenience store, like a lot of foreigners, 외국인들이 24시간 운영하는 they come here and because it's open like 24 hours a day, 편의점에 가서, "와, 정말 최고다." 하면서 they say, "Oh, it's so great and everything."
99
But it's not that great.
100
It might be a bit overpriced.
101
So yeah, just that, but otherwise, 근데 그렇다고 해도, it's still a good city to live in, I feel like.
102
I see, so you were hoping,
103
you were expecting a lot from the convenience stores but. They were a bit overpriced.
104
Yeah. I mean, the choice is not that great either.
105
Yeah, for example, I'm Muslim, so there's a lot of things I cannot eat.
106
A lot of the pork.
107
Pork and meat in general.
108
So you have to be very careful what you're getting.
109
Makes sense.
110
Yeah, but it's still good, like if you're hungry, like anytime, 그래도 배고플 때, 언제든지 뭔가를 사 먹을 수 있다는 건 you can still like grab something.
111
Agreed.
112
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's quite convenient, but it's not like that great.
113
Fair enough. I like the honesty.
114
Depending on the size of the convenience store too.
115
Some of them are really small. But some of them are actually like huge.
116
They have like all sorts of stuff.
117
How about something that was underrated?
118
No one talked about it or they didn't say much, 아무도 별로 얘기하지 않았거나, 크게 기대하지 않았는데, but you experienced and you're like, "This is actually awesome."
119
I think people are like quite nice and patient,
120
like when you have a question, even if you don't speak Korean.
121
You take time to translate sometimes with the phone and everything. 휴대폰 번역기를 쓰면서 시간이 좀 걸릴 때도 있었는데 that I've interacted with, they were quite patient.
122
They were taking time to answer my questions properly and stuff.
123
So I like that.
124
Wow, so people are very patient, they're very helpful.
125
Most of them, yeah.
126
Most of them.
127
Hey, how's it going? What's your name? Where are you from?
128
Hi, my name is Arsani, and I am from Washington DC,
129
and I just came back from Japan, 방금 일본 여행을 마치고 돌아왔는데, but if I had to pick the country, 만약 먼저 다시 가고 싶은 나라를 that I'm coming back sooner, it'd be South Korea. For sure.
130
Can I ask why?
131
Like anytime you approach a Korean, 한국 사람들은, 누구에게 말을 걸든 they're very open to talk to you.
132
They have like their own drinking culture, 자기들만의 술 문화도 있고, and it's way more exciting.
133
It's way more open and inviting.
134
Compared to Japan?
135
Japan is very shy.
136
Shy.
137
Yeah. 네. Closed off.
138
Closed in.
139
They're holding stuff inside.
140
And there's nothing wrong with that, 그게 나쁘다는 건 아니지만, but when people like, you know, 사람은 자기 감정을 speak and let out their emotions, they feel better.
141
They feel a lot better.
142
So you think Koreans seem happier than Japanese people?
143
I think so. I think Koreans know what they're doing,
144
but I think there's many similarities.
145
I mean, both cultures, they're very successful people, 두 나라 사람들 모두 성공을 위해 열심히 살고, and they study hard.
146
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
147
I mean, Asians are smart. Who doesn't know that?
148
But there's got to be a balance in life.
149
There has to be a balance.
150
It can't just be 24 hours school, 24
151
and that's something there's a problem in Korea.
152
Can't do school all the time.
153
Like you got to see your family, see your friends.
154
Work hard, play hard.
155
Exactly, exactly.
156
What's something that was kind of overrated?
157
Yo, your viewers are going to kill me, but Korean barbecue.
158
It's disappointing.
159
Tell me more.
160
Okay, we went to a bad place. It was a pork place.
161
So it was just selling pork, 돼지고기를 파는 곳이었는데, but I feel like, I don't know, the meat is exactly the same.
162
There's no, like, maybe I need to go to a better place.
163
So I'll be back and have a better place.
164
Sorry, I think I do have to go.
165
He has to go, hmm. 흑..
166
Hi, my name is Swan, and I'm from Madrid, Spain.
167
What's something about like life in Korea that's like overrated?
168
I'd say cleanliness.
169
'Cause sure, public spaces can be clean, 물론 공공장소는 깨끗한 편이지만, but at the same time, you go on the streets 한편으로는 길거리에 나가 보면, and people are so heavy on, oh, Koreans, 한국 사람들은 like you need to do the recycling right or you will get a fine.
170
But people just throw their trash everywhere on the ground
171
without any remorse.
172
I think it was a couple months ago, I was just waiting for the bus at a bus stop
173
and this lady came with this stroller and her baby, 그때 유모차를 끈 한 아주머니가 왔는데, and she had a coffee cup, a disposal plastic one, 일회용 플라스틱 커피컵을 들고 있었어요.
174
and she was not even finished. It was not even halfway done. 반도 채 안 마신 상태였는데, Just put it there. Like on top of the wall and then she just went away
175
and minded her own business.
176
I was like, "That is crazy." '
177
I feel like Korean landscape is very underrated,
178
especially you don't even have to go that far, 멀리 가지 않아도, even '북한산' which is right in the middle.
179
Right 맞아요. It's still a beautiful place to visit.
180
I haven't been myself there
181
because due to like my sports injury and recovery, I cannot do any hardcore trekking.
182
Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
183
But even just a casual road trip,
184
it doesn't have to be a long one, just like a day or two.
185
That is something that I feel 그런 경험은, everyone coming to Korea should get to experience, 한국에 오는 사람이라면 누구나 꼭 해봤으면 좋겠어요.
186
especially, you know, the Getbol or Mud Flats, the wetlands?
187
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
188
That's an ecosystem that it's only found in Korea.
189
It's a part of the world heritage, the UNESCO Heritage.
190
And a lot of people actually miss that,
191
and it's not that far from the main cities either.
192
Hey guys, how's it going?
193
What's your name? Where are you from?
194
I'm Vance, and I'm from Chile.
195
I'm currently traveling here.
196
I'm Matt from the US, also traveling.
197
What's something about being in Korea, Korean culture that's kind of overrated and then underrated?
198
We could start with overrated.
199
Maybe just like behavior towards foreigners sometimes 가끔은 외국인을 대하는 태도가 불친절하게 could be a little bit rough.
200
That it's not very talked about, but that's just certain occasions. But in general, I like the country.
201
I cannot talk bad about it in my opinion, yeah.
202
What I think is underrated and should be explored more 제가 과소평가됐다고 생각하고 더 많이 경험해 봤으면 하는 건, is that as you learn more of the language and the culture 한국에서는 이곳의 언어와 문화를 배우고, and really put yourself out there and try, 직접 부딪혀 보면서 노력할수록, I think you're really rewarded for that,
203
and people respect that a lot.
204
Even if your Korean is far from perfect, 한국어가 완벽하지 않더라도, going to social events, language exchanges, 사교 모임이나 언어 교환 모임에 나가고, really networking, you can make a lot of not only foreigner friends, 사람들과 적극적으로 교류하다 보면 외국인 친구들뿐만 아니라, but a lot of native Korean friends 한국인 친구들도 많이 사귈 수 있어요.
205
that are interested in learning your culture as well, 그리고 그들도 상대방의 문화를 배우는 데 관심이 많다는 게, which I think is actually really cool and different 정말 멋지고, 다른 나라들과는 다른 점이라고 생각해요.
206
than maybe some other more closed off, 예를 들면 일본처럼 조금 더 폐쇄적이고, less kind of open culture, which I think of like Japan 덜 개방적인 문화가 있는 곳이랑은 차이가 있는 것 같아요.
207
or maybe other parts of Asia.
208
It's easy to network. It's easy to make friends in Korea.
209
Yeah, 100%.
210
Compared to many other places I've visited, 제가 가본 다른 많은 나라들과 비교해 봐도, provided you put yourself out there and try, 먼저 다가가고 노력만 한다면, definitely you can make a lot of friends here.
211
So I hear what you're saying.
212
It's easy to network. It's easy to make friends here.
213
I've also heard on the other end, that it's kind of hard 그런데 한편으로 외국인은 한국 사회에 완전히 to be accepted fully into Korean society.
214
How do you reconcile these two opinions?
215
In my opinion, I always come in the vision that I'm a foreigner,
216
and I know that I don't look Korean.
217
I will never be a Korean.
218
And I don't, I accept that already, you know?
219
I think it's okay that people like look at you a certain way
220
and I don't fight about it.
221
The thing that I try to do is make people understand 제가 하려고 하는 건, 사람들이 다른 문화를 가진 how I think of life and how like see, 제 삶을 이해하도록 하는 거예요. 한국인들에게 try to expose my culture to them.
222
I don't want to fit into them.
223
I want also them to see my part,
224
because I know that I will never fully fit into them.
225
It's kind of strange, but I just try to like share both cultures 조금 이상하게 들릴 수도 있지만, 저는 그냥 두 문화를 함께 나누고, and try to make something out of it, that's what I'm saying.
226
That's a very nice perspective.
227
Mhm. 네. What do you think?
228
Yeah, so I'm being half Chinese, 네, 저는 중국계 혼혈이라, a lot of people assume I'm some sort of Asian a bit 많은 사람들이 제가 어느 정도는 아시아 사람이라고 생각해요.
229
and therefore, they know I'm certainly not fully Asian, 물론 제가 완전한 동아시아인은 아니라는 건 알지만, but can blend in a little, at least in that, you know, 그래도 어느 정도는 자연스럽게 어울릴 수 있는 것 같아요.
230
we're both at least part East Asian.
231
However, I agree that you're never fully going to be Korean, 완전히 한국인이 될 수 없고, and that's okay, right?
232
This is a country where it's 94% Korean, I believe.
233
And so any of these really homogenous cultures, 이렇게 단일민족 성향이 강한 나라에서는, of course, there's going to be a big gap between foreigner and native, 당연히 외국인과 현지인 사이에 큰 차이가 있을 수밖에 없어요.
234
versus I think of in the US in which, you know, 반면 미국은, 아시다시피, there are all kinds of races from everywhere in the world.
235
Melting pot.
236
Exactly.
237
And so no one, even if you look different, 그래서 외모가 다르거나 외국인이라고 no one expects you or really cares that you're a foreigner.
238
And so I think leaning into that 그래서 그런 점을 받아들이고, and accepting, hey, I'm going to be different, that's okay. There are aspects of my culture that I can share here 관심 있는 사람들에게는 제가 가진 문화를 for those that are interested. And if people are not interested, that's okay too.
239
I can think of so many people in America 미국에도, 다른 언어나 다른 문화를 배우는 데 in which they have no interest 전혀 관심 없는 사람들이 in learning another language and another culture.
240
And I'm sure it's the same here for many Koreans.
241
You know, that's just something to accept.
242
I think small things is what makes this country great.
243
Small things that work and that in other countries won't work 다른 나라에서는 잘 안 되는 것들인데, and then you see it and you're completely shocked and amazed.
244
When you go to a restaurant, how the service works, 식당에 가면 서비스가 돌아가는 방식이라든지, transportation, how it always works. You can, it's nothing out of place.
245
Everything works how it's supposed to,
246
as compared to other countries like mine, Chile, 제 나라 칠레 같은 곳과 비교하면, there's some aspects, 몇몇 부분에서는, transportation, for example, that is not very good 예를 들어 교통 같은 경우도 별로 좋지 않고, or just like service in general is not very great.
247
Some things are here small 여기서는 그런 작은 것들이 that makes a great difference in the comparison.
248
And of course the food is unbelievable, right?
249
I mean, it's affordable, delivery's super convenient.
250
No tips.
251
Exactly, no tips.
252
Speaking of tips, 팁 얘기가 나와서 말인데, did you hear about like the World Cup situation?
253
People going to the US, foreigners and refusing to tip.
254
I saw like a lot of the complaints.
255
In my case, I've lived in the US for five years 저 같은 경우에는, 미국에서 5년 동안 살았고 and know how the tip works, and I'm used to it, 팁 문화가 어떻게 돌아가는지 알고, 이미 익숙해졌지만 but I fully understand what foreigners 외국인들, like Koreans or just Europeans in general, 한국인이나 유럽 사람들이, you saw the tip and think it's ridiculous.
256
I think it's ridiculous. I think it's too much.
257
Yeah, it's just like cultural difference that you got to like accept 네, 다른 나라에 가면 받아드려야 하는 when you go to someone else country, in my opinion.
258
I hear that working here is quite difficult.
259
They work a lot more hours than we do in the US. They have to stay later.
260
There's just a lot more focus on image,
261
versus I feel like in the States in, you know, not every industry,
262
particularly some of the more old fashioned ones, 특히 좀 더 전통적인 업계는, it's more similar to Korea, 한국과 비슷한 면도 있지만, but I think of at least in like technology and marketing 적어도 IT나 마케팅처럼, and a lot of these kind of newer, more innovative industries, 새롭고 혁신적인 산업에서는, there's more of a focus on productivity, 단순히 얼마나 오래 일했는지보다, 얼마나 생산적으로 일했는지를 rather than like pure hours.
263
And so, you know, I think a lot of foreigners I see romanticize moving here, 너무 낭만적으로만 보는 경우가 있는데, not realizing that they're going to have to work a lot more 막상 와 보면 자기 나라보다 훨씬 더 많이 than potentially their home country.
264
With that all said though, I think if you're able to work around that, 자기 사업을 하거나, whether that be through your own business 국제적인 회사에서 일하는 등, or an international company, 그런 환경을 만들 수 있다면, it really is the, or just vacation, it is the best place in the world to be.
265
This is my favorite city ever and there's just so much to do 할 것도 정말 많고, and if you put yourself out there, learn a bit of the language, 직접 먼저 다가가고, 한국어도 조금 배우고, find some native friends who can take you around, 이곳을 안내해 줄 한국인 친구들도 사귀면, it's just so convenient, affordable, and really wonderful.
266
Other than right now, it's really humid.
267
Don't come in the summer.
268
But any other time, it's really amazing.
269

Bye.

Who Is This Video For?

This video is perfect for intermediate English learners looking to practice real-life conversation skills, especially for IELTS speaking practice or daily communication. The casual dialogue between two people discussing cultural observations is ideal for shadowing practice—a technique where you mimic the speaker’s tone, rhythm, and pronunciation. Whether you’re prepping for a language exam or just want to sound more natural, this conversation offers relatable topics and everyday language that’s easy to apply.

Words & Idioms Worth Stealing

  • "flirty with you": Acting in a way that shows romantic interest. Example: "He was being flirty with you at the party."
  • "make a move": To take the first action, especially in a romantic context. Example: "If you like her, you should make a move."
  • "clean girl vibes": A style that’s simple, elegant, and understated. Example: "Her outfit gives off clean girl vibes."
  • "underrated": Not given enough praise or attention. Example: "The café downtown is underrated—try their coffee!"

These phrases are common in spoken English and will make your conversations sound more natural. Use them in your next english speaking practice session!

How to Get the Accent Right

The speaker, Marianna, has a clear, conversational tone with slight Portuguese influences—great for practicing rhythm and stress. Focus on: - Reduction of "want to" to "wanna" (e.g., "I wanna go every week"). - Intonation in questions (e.g., "What if you want them to flirt with you?"). - Stressing key words for emphasis (e.g., "It's so safe here"). For best results, use a shadowing site to replay short clips and mimic her pace. This will help you improve english pronunciation and sound more confident in real conversations. Remember, shadowing isn’t just about copying—it’s about feeling the flow of the language!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
