1. Do all teenagers get pocket money?
3
Most teenagers receive pocket money every week.
4
But not everyone gets the same amount of money.
5
Have you asked your friends how much they get?
6
You might be surprised.
7
And if you're a girl, you'll be amazed to learn that boys often get more than girls of the same age.
8
2. So what happens in different countries?
9
Teenagers up to the age of about 15 in the UK have about £5 a week in pocket money.
10
But in Italy, France and Spain, the same age group gets about 9 euros, which is a bit more.
11
In the US, pocket money is called an allowance.
12
Most teenagers get an allowance of about $30, which is more than £20 or €25.
13
3. Do teens have to work for their pocket money?
14
Quite a lot of teenagers do.
15
They have to do things in the house, like washing up and cleaning, and then they get their pocket money.
16
If they don't do the jobs, they don't get the money.
17
Some teenagers have part-time jobs too, which means they have more than their pocket money to spend each week.
18
4. What do teenagers spend their money on?
19
You might be surprised at the answer.
20
Teenagers in the UK spend more of their money on food than on clothes.
21
Is that true for you too?
22
Teens do more shopping online than before, and online clothes shopping is cheaper.
23
So perhaps this is one reason they don't spend so much on clothes.
24
5. Do parents tell teens what to spend pocket money on?
25
Some parents do.
26
They only let them buy some things.
27
Other parents want their teens to save all their pocket money and spend it on something big in the future, or not spend it at all.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "A2.2 - U14 - Pocket money" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
