1
Hey everybody, I want to thank you all for helping me reach 100,000 subscribers.
2
It's pretty cool that this channel has reached that many people.
3
To celebrate 100,000 subscribers, I wanted to do a special video talking about the techniques
4
that I use for my listening practice in my own language learning.
5
So, I want to give you a few quick listening tips based on my own language learning experience,
6
and I'll give each tip in a different language.
7
So, the first advice I want to give you is to listen mainly to content that you fascine,
8
that you fascine.
9
If you find podcasts or YouTube channels about topics that really are important,
10
interesting or fun for you,
11
this will facilitate your learning a lot.
12
When your brain is completely focused on the message of the video or podcast that you are escuchando en inglés,
13
tu cerebro adquiere más vocabulario y más gramática sin que te des cuenta.
14
Cuando olvidas que estás escuchando algo en inglés porque te interesa tanto el contenido,
15
tu cerebro está en el modo óptimo para aprender el inglés.
16
Alors, ma seconda astuce pour vous,
17
c'est de passer plusieurs jours,
18
voire plusieurs semaines avec la même chaîne YouTube ou le même podcast.
19
Je vais vous dire pourquoi.
20
Les gens ont tendance to use the same words,
21
the same phrase and the same words of argot.
22
So if you watch several videos or podcasts of the same person who speak the same subject,
23
you will surely find the same vocabulary.
24
That means you have more chance to re-react these words because of their repetition.
25
So you will have to listen to a lot of content from the same person
26
and then go to the next channel or podcast.
27
So, the third tip I have is for those who have a low or intermediate level.
28
You can use one of the following methods of repetition
29
to take advantage of the maximum content that you are watching or listening.
30
The first method is the following.
31
Listen the first time without a letter or transcription.
32
Then, listen the second time with a text to identify all the things you didn't catch the first time.
33
And finally, listen again once without text again to try to understand everything without reading.
34
And the second option is the following.
35
Listen the first time with a letter or transcription.
36
Listen the second time and just look at the text when you don't understand something.
37
And listen the third time without text.
38
If you use one of these repetition methods,
39
it will make sure and you will advance.
40
Okay, my last tip for you is to challenge yourself.
41
If you only listen to content that you already understand almost 100% of,
42
then you're not going to improve much.
43
So for example, if you listen to my podcast and you already understand almost everything without using the transcript,
44
then it's time for you to start using more advanced content.
45
This is why I created my advanced podcast,
46
so you can train with real fast English.
47
In my advanced episodes, I speak at normal speed,
48
so it's more difficult than the normal listening time podcast,
49
but I provide the transcript which will help you understand what I'm saying.
50
So remember, you need to challenge yourself if you want to reach a higher level of listening.
51
All right, I hope these tips were helpful for you.
52
If you need help to improve your listening skills,
53
then join my membership so you can receive my specialized training.
54
And if you want my advanced podcast episodes that I mentioned,
55
then become a Listening Time family member.

Step-by-step Shadowing Guide

To effectively improve your English listening and speaking skills using the shadowing technique, follow this structured guide:

  1. Select Your Content: Choose a podcast or video that genuinely interests you. Consider subjects that captivate your attention, making the learning process enjoyable.
  2. Initial Listening: Listen to the selected material without any transcripts. This will help you familiarize yourself with the speaker's tone, rhythm, and overall message.
  3. Enhanced Comprehension: Listen again, this time with the transcript. Pay attention to words and phrases that you missed during the first viewing. Use a shadowing app to practice mimicking the speaker's pronunciation and intonation.
  4. Reinforcement: For the third listening, remove the transcript once more and try to comprehend everything without assistance. This step reinforces what you've learned, enhancing your English speaking practice.
  5. Challenge Yourself: If you find that you understand most of the material, seek out more advanced content. Engaging with complex topics or faster speech can push your skills further and keep you in a continuous learning loop.

Using these techniques, you can significantly improve your listening skills and become more confident in your English communication. The shadowing technique not only aids in vocabulary acquisition but also boosts your overall fluency. Incorporate these tips into your daily practice to see progress in your language learning journey.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
