you do not have to be like that but your  personality you cannot be quiet and you have to be willing to get in uncomfortable situations now a  lot of technical sales people have an engineering
3
degree or are engineering minded now just um just  going out there and saying a majority of engineers are somewhat quiet and reserved that will  not work in sales you don't need to be the
4
quiet and reserved person now you don't have  to be outspoken and loud and in your face
5
but you do have to be able to be confident  when you're nervous you have to be able to push through that remain confident be willing to  get that experience you have to be outgoing to the point where you're gonna you're basically talking  to people every day whether it's on the phone

video conference call or in person you need to be  able to talk if you hate talking on the phone if you hate talking to people this is not the job  for you most likely that's not the case because otherwise you wouldn't want to get into sales  it's not all about money while sales people do

10
to work through those insecurities or work through  rejection then that's all that you need but if you hate talking to people if you hate talking on the  phone this isn't going to be the right job for you

Key Speaking Skills to Build from This Clip

This video helps you develop two critical speaking skills: confident communication under pressure and clear articulation of professional opinions. You’ll learn to convey nuance—like balancing technical expertise with approachability—while staying engaged in daily conversations, whether on calls or in person. It also sharpens your ability to persist through discomfort, a must for roles requiring regular interaction.

Listen for These Connected Speech Patterns

The speaker uses casual, conversational linking that’s common in workplace discussions. Notice how "gonna" replaces "going to" (e.g., "you're gonna talk to people") and "it's not a huge thing" reduces to "it's not a huge thing" with soft stress on "huge." Phrases like "push through that" link "through" and "that" smoothly, creating a natural flow. Also, listen for the relaxed pronunciation of "wanna" instead of "want to" in "you wouldn't wanna get into sales." These reductions are key to sounding fluent in real-world English.

Say It Like a Native: Rhythm and Stress Tips

To mirror the speaker’s style, focus on stressing key ideas like "confident," "outgoing," and "rejection" to emphasize priorities. The rhythm is conversational—pauses after phrases like "now I'm not going to sit here and say" give time to emphasize the contrast that follows. Practice the "push-pull" of tone: softening when discussing common traits ("a majority of engineers are somewhat quiet") and sharpening when making firm points ("you cannot be quiet"). Use the shadowing technique to mimic this rhythm: repeat the speaker’s lines immediately after, matching their pace and stress. This "shadow speech" practice helps you internalize natural cadence, making your English sound more authentic. For consistent practice, use a shadowing site to replay short clips and refine your delivery.

By focusing on these elements, you’ll not only improve your English speaking practice but also develop the communication style needed for roles that blend technical skill with sales acumen.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
