Hey guys!
2
Welcome to Lingua Marina and welcome to the first video on this channel from my new studio in Silicon Valley.
3
We are finally in a new home
4
and I hope you've been following me on Instagram so you've seen all the transitions we've been through.
5
It's Lingua Marina on Instagram as well.
6
And today we're going to talk about finding people to practice your English language.
7
And I I know speaking is the hardest part for a lot of students
8
and by the way right now in comments below
9
Please let me know what is your main struggle with the English language right now?
10
I remember when I was at school and I didn't live in the US I was
11
Desperate to find people to practice my English with and whenever I saw
12
Somebody from abroad I'll be like the first person to talk to them
13
and I'm gonna share some of the tips that are just common
14
that other people use as well
15
so first of all baby well baby teenage marina about around 14 years old 14 to 16 years old
16
this is um the time when i came back from the uk for the first time
17
and i realized that my english is nothing close to native speaker level
18
and i thought i was so proficient like because i started learning english
19
when i was and then I went to school
20
when I was seven where when we had English every single day
21
and I thought I am just perfect
22
but then I came to the UK I couldn't understand people people couldn't understand me it was a complete mess
23
and I felt really as an outlier because I couldn't communicate with people when I came back to Russia I told myself
24
Marina you have to solve this problem
25
Marina you have to go out there and practice English
26
so number one thing that I did I started going to museums in my city
27
and I was lucky to be born
28
and raised in a city called St. Petersburg
29
which is one of the best cities in the world in terms of architecture
30
and museums and we have the Hermitage and the Hermitage is this huge museum
31
that has a lot of art and it attracts a lot of tourists
32
so I would just go to that museum
33
and I had a free pass as a Russian student
34
so I went into that museum and I just looked at people who were confused
35
or like trying to find their way
36
and I don't know how to explain this
37
but you can always tell whether a person who's Russian
38
or whether a person is a foreigner
39
so I could tell from like 10 meters or 20 meters
40
that I see some foreigners and they're lost I would just approach them
41
and say hey do you need any help I was just you know I was desperate to practice English
42
and this is something that you can do once I don't know
43
if museums are open in your country or
44
if you have any museums in your city but try
45
that just walk around the museum look at people see tourists approach them
46
and ask them if they need any help that helped me a lot
47
and there were a couple ladies who were lost
48
and then I showed them the way
49
and we kept walking around the city for like an hour
50
or so and we kept practicing English so
51
that was really useful number two another thing
52
that you can do find a British Council or US consulate
53
or embassy in your country and just write them an email
54
or reach out to them or see if they have any events again depends on the country in my country
55
Russia
56
when I was back at school
57
they had a lot of events for people to just come
58
over like British Council would have weekly meetups where people who
59
like English literature US Embassy would have different events like flex
60
which is kind of a competition where winners can go to the US
61
but even if you take part in that competition you get to talk to people from the embassy
62
Americans and then another thing US Embassy did they organized movie nights
63
and again you could come there and talk to people
64
and this is what I did I was a subscriber on their Facebook pages I was following them everywhere
65
and whenever I had time to attend the event
66
and again I would just practice English
67
and these were my favorite types of events
68
because you're not just talking to random people you're talking to people from the embassy
69
and they were a huge inspiration for my future career
70
because i looked at them
71
and i thought i want to be like those people
72
i want to travel the world i want to spread my culture around
73
and i would always ask them like how did you end up being a consul
74
or how did you end up working in an embassy these are my favorite types of events
75
so definitely reach out to those organizations
76
and definitely follow them everywhere in terms of like social media I'm not like stalking follow them on social media
77
and see what kinds of events they organize in your city
78
or in your country number three there are also other types of clubs
79
and communities for English speakers
80
I was a part of such a community again in st. Petersburg
81
it was a really small community maybe 20 people I was introduced by a friend from school
82
and he attended their events regularly but basically what they did they would invite someone even Russian like they would just
83
Just invite someone who's good at English.
84
to speak about something.
85
So we had a lady who wrote a book and she was talking about this book in English.
86
Oh, we had a mayor of Edinburgh who just came to St. Petersburg and he was talking about Edinburgh.
87
We had somebody who was translating English books into Russian.
88
We had a CEO of a store where they sold books in English.
89
So different interesting people, again, holding conversations in English.
90
Google something like this, you would definitely have something, at least online, something
91
that you can attend oh we're going to talk about online resources a little later in this video
92
but i want to focus on offline first i don't know just i like offline communication
93
and i've been missing offline communication a lot um in the past year
94
when the whole thing started if you think
95
that your english is not enough to start speaking first of all you're wrong
96
if you understand this video you probably have a lot of knowledge to help you start speaking
97
but the second thing
98
that you can do is take one of my courses i have a course
99
that is specifically for people probably like you
100
intermediate have a lot of knowledge
101
but are afraid to speak we focus a lot on how to actually start speaking
102
we focus a lot on how to build your speech
103
that it sounds naturally like all the vocabulary that you can use grammar
104
that you can use the course is called intermediate to advanced it starts every month it lasts 30 days
105
and there you also have groups where you can communicate with others we have special chats for people
106
and this is a great way to find a speaking buddy
107
and also improve your language skills with me the classes are pre -recorded
108
so you can take them from anywhere anytime you will get tests after every module
109
so you will be able to practice whatever you just learned
110
and i've created this course with a professional teacher venia who's also not a native speaker
111
but you won't be able to tell
112
because he's just mastering this pronunciation like he's amazing at
113
that the link will be below and you will have a special promo code
114
because you watched this video the next thing
115
that you can do is go to meetup .com I don't know
116
if it's available in your country necessarily but I also know
117
that even people who come to the US they struggle to practice English
118
because they end up living in a community of people from their country
119
and I know there's like a huge community in New York a huge community of Russians
120
and I was in that neighborhood and everything is in Russian.
121
Like if you go to a bank, it's Bank of America, but everything is in Russian and people are Russian.
122
You know, and I know there are Chinatowns, there are Indiatowns and a lot of those smaller communities,
123
which are great in terms of like when you come there, you feel like at home.
124
But if you're trying to practice English, it might be really hard.
125
So if you are in that situation, go to meetup .com and see what kinds of events are organized around your area and attend those events.
126
Again, they're probably all online right now,
127
But I'm not sure because it depends on the country where you are in California Almost everything is still online
128
But the thing is this site meetup .com has a separate page for people who want to practice languages
129
and they have different groups all over the globe in small and big cities all the links will be below so you
130
Will have all the resources that you can use later on
131
when you decide to start practicing English and I hope that you decide
132
Right after this video because practice makes perfect another thing that I've seen trending on different social media like Instagram,
133
Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. Especially because I'm an influencer and I get a lot of DMs from people like, oh, can you practice English with me?
134
Or if I organize a group, I have like a big
135
Telegram channel and some people complain that they became a part of this
136
Telegram channel and they just got random DMs from people who want to practice English.
137
I don't think that's the best idea, just reaching out to people and cold texting them like, hey, can you practice english with me
138
because it is a little weird i it might work
139
and uh i found a friend in germany this way
140
i was just randomly texting people on skype to practice german
141
and then we actually met in person uh well not a friend
142
but like a person i know
143
and he was willing to communicate with me he was the same age
144
and uh it was kind of okay but this is the only thing
145
that ever worked for me in terms of like cold texting
146
people what you can do is you can join ielts
147
and toefl groups on Facebook and WhatsApp
148
or whatever you're able to find in your country and your city
149
or whatever you're able to find online because
150
when people are preparing for TOEFL
151
and IELTS they tend to be more serious their English language skills tend to be better
152
and this would enhance your experience there are also some other apps
153
that were created necessarily for finding a speaking buddy the apps are speak native open talk speaky halo
154
and there are many others from all the platforms i really like speak native just
155
because you have to create an introductory video about yourself before you start communicating with others
156
and that really helps you determine whether you want to talk to
157
that person because you want to see their level of english their interest etc
158
and when you have this introductory video it really helps okay the next cool thing
159
that you can do is join clubhouse clubhouse is this new app
160
that is taking off like crazy in silicon valley millions of users the only problem with it right now is
161
that you can only get in by getting an invite from someone else you only have two invites on clubhouse
162
and i've already given away one of them
163
so you really need to be active on clubhouse to generate those invites basically
164
if you have friends that are on clubhouse ask them
165
or maybe just ask around on social media
166
if anyone can give you an invite
167
but basically clubhouse has this app i'm gonna demonstrate
168
so basically it's this app where you have many rooms
169
that you can join and listen to conversations
170
and sometimes you can participate like i don't know fintech europe
171
they lower a bit barrier entry to some of their products especially
172
if they're you know so expensive products they're basically just people talking about different topics
173
and you can it's kind of participating in a live panel
174
and you're in the audience but sometimes you can raise hand
175
and ask questions so that is taking off like crazy
176
and there are already some groups for people who want to practice languages
177
so definitely join Clubhouse let's talk a little more about offline
178
so whenever you're planning your next travel think about taking a language course instead of just being a tourist
179
and I've been promoting this for years
180
I'm a product of language travel my company lingua trip helps you guys travel around the world
181
and book courses all over the world so
182
if you are thinking of going to the uk or canada
183
or another english -speaking country just make your research
184
because whenever i compared like staying at a hotel versus taking a course
185
and staying at a local host family the second option is always cheaper
186
because it is a student option you get student rates
187
and you get to practice english a lot you get to communicate with students from all over the world
188
and of course you get to communicate with native speakers
189
because all the teachers in schools are native speakers the link will be below another thing
190
that you can do I don't know if you want to do it
191
but I did it just calling American companies again
192
you can get a Viber app maybe pay like a couple dollars to to make calls
193
and you will get like unlimited calls for a month
194
and just call American companies and ask them like
195
if you're dreaming of going to New York
196
and staying at this hotel where they shut home alone
197
if you want to stay in the hotel just call them
198
and ask like hey I wanted to ask
199
if you have any rooms available for next week
200
and what's the rate can I get a discount like just just
201
that kind of thing it is their job to answer
202
and who knows maybe you'll end up coming and the last
203
but not the least my Instagram is a resource where you can find a lot of people
204
and I feel
205
that people on Instagram in terms of like writing down in comments below they're more responsive than on YouTube
206
so if you just go to my Instagram subscribe to my profile
207
and then whenever I post my next post you can just write in comments below
208
that you're looking for someone to practice English
209
and you're from this country like talk about yourself I am a student of this university from this country
210
and I'm looking for somebody from another country who doesn't speak my language to practice English
211
because my audience is really international I have people from all over the world
212
and good chances are somebody would respond just make sure
213
that you write that comment very soon after my post comes out
214
because this is when it gets a lot of traction a lot of attention
215
and this is your way of finding a buddy thank you guys
216
so much for watching this video up to the very end
217
if you're not yet subscribed my channel hit the red subscribe button down below
218
