1
Hey everyone, I recorded this episode before everything that happened.
2
Working on it after the assault has helped me clear my mind a little bit.
3
And it's reminded me of all the beautiful moments I spent with my sister traveling.
4
Those memories mean a lot to me right now.
5
I'm really proud of this episode.
6
Enjoy!
7
Hello, and welcome back to my Slow English Podcast.

10

12
Thank you for all of the unconditional support that you give me.
13
and for appreciating what I love to do.
14
Teach English.
15
So, get comfy and get ready to practice your English listening.
16
Listen to slow English while I tell you about my stressful trip to China.
17
Last week, I went from Tokyo to Shanghai.
18
Our flight left at 10 p.m.
19
And we arrived in Shanghai at 1 a.m.
20
So, to make sure we caught our flight,
21
we left our hostel at around 11 a.m.
22
Really early, we got breakfast and I bought a new suitcase.
23
I needed one to use as carry-on luggage.
24
Very big luggage to fit all of the things that I bought in Tokyo.
25
I did a lot of shopping.
26
I bought hats, sweaters, coats, some very big clunky shoes,
27
and lots of souvenirs for all of my friends and family.
28
After I bought the big suitcase,
29
we took the subway train to the airport.
30
I love this video.
31
My sister is so strong.
32
To get to the subway,
33
you have to go down so many flights of stairs.
34
and there were no escalators.
35
So my sister carried our giant suitcase all by herself.
36
We bought a ticket at the vending machine and we waited for our train.
37
I was a little impatient.
38
I didn't want to wait any longer.
39
So, I told my sister, This train is it.
40
Let's get on this train.
41
So, we boarded the first train that passed by.
42
and it was the wrong train.
43
My sister was so annoyed at me because I was so restless,
44
impatient, and I made us board the wrong train.
45
So, we had to get off at the next train station.
46
Finally, we boarded the right train and we were on our way to the Tokyo airport.
47
We arrived at the airport and we walked a long way until we found the counters.
48
We have to wait until it's two hours before our flight leaves.
49
We checked the time and we were eight hours early.
50
My sister and I don't like being rushed or late,
51
but this time I think we were too early.
52
Definitely.
53
How early do you go to the airport before your flight leaves?
54
What's the most comfortable time for you to have before your flight?
55
I need at least four hours.
56
Otherwise, I feel like I'm going to miss my flight.
57
Since we had so much time on our hands,
58
we went to the food court and we ate some delicious udon noodles.
59
Then, when it was time, we checked in, we went through security,
60
we found our gate number, and we waited some more.
61
After four hours, we were in Shanghai.
62
I tried to connect to the Wi-Fi so we could start setting up our payment apps.
63
Like WePay or Alipay.
64
If you didn't know, China is almost cashless.
65
They don't use cash.
66
And they don't accept our cards.
67
Only their own.
68
So we basically need these apps to pay for anything in China.
69
People look at you like you are crazy if you want to use cash.
70
It's not common at all.
71
We had set up these payment apps before.
72
But now the apps weren't working.
73
Our banks were rejecting the payments.
74
We were so frustrated and exhausted.
75
It was 3 a.m and we still couldn't get any of the apps to work.
76
Finally, I managed to use my WePay app to buy a little pancake from a vending machine. And it worked.
77
So I figured it works.
78
Let's go.
79
But now, we couldn't find the taxis.
80
We were walking back and forth, back and forth, and we couldn't seem to find them.
81
So, I asked a guy.
82
I said, 请问, 住住在哪?
83
Excuse me, where are the taxis?
84
And he said something.
85
He answered in full fast Chinese and he spoke for one full minute.
86
He gave me directions, hand gestures, everything.
87
I had no idea what he said,
88
but I was too embarrassed to tell him that I didn't understand.
89
Especially because I was so excited that he understood my Chinese.
90
So I just smiled and said, oh, okay, thank you. And I left.
91
Once my sister caught up with me,
92
I told her, okay, follow me.
93
It's this way.
94
So she followed me and once we were far away from the man,
95
I told her I didn't actually understand what he said.
96
She laughed at me, but finally we found another man and I asked him in English.
97
Then we found the taxis.
98
We hopped in and we were so relieved.
99
We made it.
100
And I was
101
so shocked at how fast the cars could go from zero to a hundred in a split second.
102
In a split second, the car would go from zero to a hundred.
103
Then, my My sister informed me that China actually has some of the fastest cars in the world.
104
It was something I didn't know about China.
105
We finally arrived at our first hotel near the airport just to sleep
106
and tomorrow we would book a new place to stay.
107
I scanned my WeChat code to pay.
108
I sent the payment and my card rejected it.
109
We couldn't believe it.
110
We had spent so much time setting it up.
111
And we were back to square one.
112
Back exactly where we began.
113
We didn't know what to do.
114
It was 120 RMB.
115
So we asked the receptionist inside the hotel to see
116
if maybe she had some cash and we could pay her back with our credit cards.
117
She said no. So we asked the driver
118
if maybe he could drive us to a nearby bank
119
and we could take out some cash and then pay him.
120
He didn't speak English, but he was shaking his head.
121
No, no, no, no. So, we didn't know what to do.
122
The receptionist grabbed my sister's phone and tried to use Alipay.
123
We told her.
124
We already tried.
125
It doesn't work.
126
But she tried anyway.
127
She sent herself 0.01 RMB.
128
And it worked.
129
So we figured, oh, maybe my sister's Alipay works.
130
Let's pay him.
131
She sent 120 RMB and it was rejected.
132
The payment did not go through again.
133
I had it up to here with my bank.
134
But I realized, maybe we can make small payments.
135
Maybe smaller payments would go through easier.
136
So I sent him 10 RMB and it went through.
137
So I started sending him 10 RMB at a time.
138
10, then another 10, and another 10,
139
until we finally completed the 120 plus a little tip.
140
But phew, we could finally breathe.
141
We went inside the hotel and it was a little scary,
142
I can't lie, a little dirty and smelly and scary.
143
Straight out of a horror movie.
144
And we didn't even care at that point.
145
We just wanted to sleep.
146
When we finally got into our room,
147
I slammed my body on the bed and I passed out.
148
It was 5 a.m by then.
149
I slept so well that night.
150
Once we woke up, I booked our next hotel,
151
and we ordered an Uber to our hotel.
152
Now that it was finally working,
153
we arrived at the destination that Google Maps marked,
154
Google Maps doesn't work well in China either,
155
so the location was wrong.
156
It had sent us about 17 minutes away from our hotel.
157
Keep in mind, we had two huge suitcases and two backpacks.
158
But we took a deep breath and we began walking to our hotel.
159
We arrived at the second location it marked and it was a McDonald's, not a hotel.
160
location was wrong again.
161
So at that point I decided let's take an Uber.
162
I was fuming.
163
I seem like a happy, positive person, but when I am stressed out,
164
I am a whole different person.
165
My sister and I were so annoyed at each other at that point.
166
I also understand we were both super stressed out.
167
After 30 minutes of lugging around our luggage, we finally made it.
168
to our hotel.
169
I went to eat some delicious xiaolongbao,
170
some crab roe noodles, and a crispy pancake. So good.
171
It has been one of the best meals I have ever had.
172
I went back to our room,
173
I took a shower, and I went to sleep.
174
At night, I got a little bit hungry again,
175
so I walked outside to Nanjing Road to get a snack,
176
and the streets were so alive.
177
full of colorful lights
178
and food everywhere literally everywhere the next days in
179
China were super fun I went for a run in people's park and I found the cutest little kiosk
180
to sit down and read.
181
I saw a lake with lily pads and gaudy flowers.
182
There were so many cats in China.
183
My sister loves cats.
184
I try so much food.
185
Sweet and salty.
186
My sister and I talked about how soft everything is in China.
187
The dumplings, the mochi.
188
Why is everything so soft here?
189
Everything's so soft, but I like that flavor more than the bean stuff we've been getting in Thailand and Japan.
190
This tastes more Mexican.
191
the noodles it's all so soft i love it these soup dumplings wow
192
i bought a new hat it's red and warm and i love it it's my new favorite hat
193
and we had been eating so much Asian food.
194
We needed some Mexican food.
195
So I ordered a quesadilla.
196
In the evening, we went to see Yu Yuan Garden.
197
And that was something else.
198
I had never seen anything like that.
199
You could also see a skyscraper.
200
touching the clouds.
201
It looked unreal from a movie.
202
In Mexico, we have orejitas, little ears.
203
They're like sweet bread.
204
And I kept on seeing this bread in China.
205
They looked a little different,
206
but I tried one and they tasted really similar.
207
Interesting.
208
I was obsessed with Xiao Long Bao on this trip.
209
I had at least one order of Xiao Long Bao every day.
210
I had more sweets like caramelized strawberries.
211
And we saw the bund.
212
A very unique view of buildings right in front of the river.
213
I would love to live near that area.
214
I could go for runs every morning right next to the river.
215
Nanjing Road was busy all the time, full of people.
216
And being around so many people can make me feel exhausted.
217
So to regain our energy, we got a hot pot.
218
It was so spicy.
219
Our lips were on fire,
220
but it was so tasty and flavorful.
221
forget to like and subscribe to practice English listening every day.
222
I also tried a persimmon. That was interesting.
223
It tasted almost like a tomato and a raisin mixed together.
224
Then we saw the cutest car.
225
I want a car like that.
226
One that doesn't take so much space.
227
Like those big trucks that everyone has in the USA.
228
It's so unnecessary.
229
Like, why do you need that much space?
230
You are one person.
231
We should all have tiny cars like this.
232
At this temple, there were so many little red notes with people's dreams and goals.
233
They wrote down, I want to meet a beautiful partner.
234
I want to speak fluent Chinese and hung them on the trees.
235
What would you write down on one of these notes?
236
What dream would you want to come true?
237
These are protecting dragons.
238
One of them is a man and one of them is a woman.
239
You keep them in your house to protect your house.
240
It's supposed to bring good luck and good fortune.
241
I actually bought two little ones to keep with me all the time.
242
On our last day, we checked out of our hotel and we moved to a different hotel,
243
closer to the airport.
244
It was so cool.
245
It was like a resort.
246
They had a theater to watch movies in,
247
a restaurant, hot springs and an arcade.
248
We played Mario Kart and I was number one a lot.
249
We snacked on popcorn and chips, and we ate a lot of food.
250
We were only in Shanghai for four days.
251
We did what we could with the time we had,
252
but I will definitely apply for a visa to have a longer trip next time.
253
And let me know in the comments if you would like to see more of my trips in Asia.
254
I have so many students from Somalia,
255
Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Brazil, Morocco, Turkey.
256
It's crazy to see how diverse my audience is,
257
but I'm so proud of all of you for sticking with me,
258
for staying consistent, and not only building your English skills,
259
but also working on yourself.

Please never lose that motivation.
261

262

263
