1
So, have you ever went shopping, let's say for a new apartment or a new house?
2
and you actually purchased or decided to rent a new apartment or buy a house, you probably started capacity planning at some aspect.
3
And in this sense, capacity planning is really just
4
How you optimize space is very similar when we talk about manufacturing and capacity planning in that sense.
5
You can't put a king size bed in a very small room.
6
Right?
7
Take a look at this floor plan, this floor model.
8
If this is enough space for you, great.
9
But if you put the wrong size furniture in this space, you're not utilizing your capacity well.
10
It's just like the technologies that we have, computers and cell phones.
11
They have limited bandwidth.
12
And so does the organizations that produce products.
13
So in this sense, capacity is simply the measure of an organization's ability to sustainably produce products based on customers' demand.
14
goods and services based on customers' demand.
15
How well can we produce?
16
And this is going to be based on what we call our maximum
17
throughput or our maximum rate of output which is called our throughput.
18
So if we can only produce 100 units a day, and we're producing 100 units a day,
19
we're operating at full capacity and at 100 % capacity utilization because that's our maximum rate of throughput.
20
Now, what's driving that?
21
It could be a number of things.
22
However, we could have a bottleneck, right?
23
And that bottleneck could be slowing down production in some aspect.
24
Therefore, we have to improve that bottleneck in order to increase capacity.
25
Now, there's another aspect we can look at, and that's called system capacity.
26
So, system capacity is driven by the number of but we also consider the strongest and the weakest points within that system.
27
This is where we begin to get into bottlenecks in specific departments
28
that could be the reason that we have such low throughput or where our maximum output is at a specific rate.
29
So in this case, your maximum output is going to be driven by the department
30
with the slowest amount of time or the department with the least amount of output.
31
Here's an example.
32
Let's say you ran a sandwich shop.
33
Right?
34
And right now in your three departments you have 20 slices of bread,
35
15 slices of cheese, 12 slices of turkey.
36
Every sandwich that you make requires two slices of bread, one slice of cheese, and one slice of turkey.
37
Yeah.
38
How many total sandwiches can you make based on your inventory levels?
39
you can only make 10, right?
40
Because you have 20 slices of bread, You have...
41
15 slices of cheese and then you have 12 slices of turkey.
42
So your bread department is the slowest
43
or have the least amount of output therefore they determine your throughput which is your maximum output rate.
44
You can only make 10 sandwiches because you only have enough bread to make 10 sandwiches.
45
You could make at least two more, because turkey would be next in line with 12 slices.
46
So you could do two more if you had four more slices of bread.
47
And that's how throughput works in relation to capacity planning.
48
And this is when other departments get involved in organizations
49
when it comes to producing products and how they can particularly slow the company down or become the bottleneck.
50
And that can be for a number of reasons, right?
51
Maybe the bread department has some employees that are on
52
are not as efficient in that department as they are in other departments.
53
But that's the general sense of what capacity is.
54
Key takeaways.
55
Capacity planning and capacity is really just about the measure of how can a company produce to meet demand,
56
sustainably produce to meet demand of customer demand for products and or services.
57
output is so
58
low or their production time is so slow because
59
that department is going to drive their throughput because the lowest throughput
60
or the slowest time is the one that drives the throughput for the entire system.

Gramática e expressões no contexto

Vamos analisar algumas estruturas-chave do vídeo:

  • "You probably start at capacity planning at some aspect": A estrutura "start at" aqui significa "começar a considerar", mostrando como phrasal verbs são usados de forma informal em explicações.
  • "If you put the wrong size furniture in this space, you're not utilized in your capacity": A condicional "if" com verbo no presente ("put") e resultado no presente contínuo ("you're not utilized") é uma forma comum de explicar consequências imediatas.
  • "That could be the reason that we have such low throughput": A expressão "that could be the reason that" é uma maneira natural de justificar uma situação.

  • "Throughput": O som "th" no início é crucial.
