This is the universal money stress matrix.
2
Now, this is going to be a really helpful framework for determining where you might be in your career
3
or where you want to be.
4
Let's get into it.
5
So, on your x-axis, you're going to have the amount of money,
6
the pay that you're getting from your job.
7
And then on the y-axis,
8
you're going to have the level of stress that your job gives you.
9
Now, on money, we're going to have 0 to 10,
10
10 being your dream amount of income,
11
whatever that is, whether that's $500,000 or a million dollars a year.
12
And then on the y-axis for stress,
13
this is actually going to start at a 4
14
because there's no job that's less than a 4 in terms of stress levels,
15
and it's going to go up to a 10.
16
So, I want you to pay attention really carefully here because what I'm about to tell you is really, really important.
17
Let's say this is a 5.
18
So this is halfway between a 10 in terms of money.
19
There's going to be a line right here where any job that is less than a five in money,
20
you ideally do not want to be here,
21
regardless of the stress level.
22
So I'm going to call this the no-go zone.
23
Okay?
24
And so ideally, you don't want to play in this zone.
25
Now, there's going to be this line right here,
26
which I call the money-stress curve,
27
and you want to stay below this curve.
28
I'm going to explain why in just a second.
29
So any job up here where you're getting paid between a 5 to a 10 and your stress level though,
30
let's say, is above a 7,
31
which means you're fairly stressed out, is the burnout zone.
32
Now in the burnout zone,
33
what's going to happen is you're not going to last more than 6 to 12 months in this job
34
because even if it pays you decently well,
35
you are above a 7 in stress and that simply isn't sustainable.
36
You're probably working 80 to 100 hour weeks
37
and you're not going to have time to take care of yourself or spend time with your family,
38
friends, all that good stuff.
39
And so you want to avoid this zone if you can.
40
Now down here though, if you go and look at jobs
41
that are between a 5 to an 8 in terms of money but below the stress line,
42
this is actually a job that maybe pays okay but isn't necessarily at your target level of income.
43
And so I'm going to call this the stepping stone job.
44
Now, if you're someone who's been in the workforce for at least three to five years,
45
you're going to probably know what I'm talking about.
46
This is maybe your first job out of college or your second job,
47
and you know that you don't see yourself here long term maybe,
48
or you're using it as a way to gain the skills
49
that's required for you to eventually exit into a role
50
or get promoted into a position that you ultimately want to be in.
51
And so ideally you don't want to be in the stepping stone job for more than two to five years max,
52
because at that point you're just wasting your time.
53
So when we move into the zone of jobs
54
that are below the stress line but are perhaps an 8 or 10 in terms of pay,
55
this gets pretty interesting.
56
Let's say that at a stress level of 7,
57
anything that is a 7 to 10 in terms of stress,
58
so still pretty stressful, but where you're getting paid more than an 8,
59
so you're I'm getting paid the big bucks now.
60
This is what I will call the survive zone.
61
I know some of you are like,
62
dude, what are you talking about?
63
Why is this the survive zone?
64
I'm getting paid so much now.
65
Isn't this where I want to be?
66
It's the survive zone because you're probably still cranking out 80 plus hour weeks.
67
I have a lot of friends in this bucket.
68
If you know who you are,
69
you know who you are.
70
And you're working a job in investment banking,
71
management consulting, any high powered job,
72
Maybe if you're a corporate lawyer where you're getting paid the big bucks,
73
but it's a lot of work.
74
And most people,
75
you want to stay in here as long as you possibly can until you can actually find the dream job,
76
which I define as anything that is above a five but below a seven in terms of stress.
77
Now the dream job is quite difficult to find but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.
78
This is going to be jobs where you've got a very cushy gig that pays you really well and maybe
79
you're not working more than 60 hours a week and so you still manage to get home to your family
80
and you still have a fairly decent lifestyle and you're getting paid really, really well.
81
This is where most people want to end up.
82
Now, if you're below a 5 in stress and you're getting paid higher than an 8,
83
this is what I will call a unicorn because that doesn't exist.
84
If any of you watching work a job
85
that pays you above an 8 and also happens to be between a 4 and a 5 in stress,
86
Let me know.
87
I would like to go talk to your employer and ask them for a job.
88
Now, some of you may have been watching this and thinking to yourselves,
89
what do you mean there's no job below a 4 in stress that doesn't also pay me above an 8 mat?
90
What are you talking about?
91
Well, maybe there is a job.
92
Let's say that you do find a job where the stress level is a 2 or a 3, right?
93
And you also are making the big bucks.
94
Well, if that's the case,
95
you may actually be mistaken.
96
You're just a Nepo baby.
97
That's the universal money stress matrix.
98
Use it wisely.

Shadowing?
